Happy Sushi is just plain a delight. Whenever we're in the mood for sushi and willing to pay a little more for the quality, we make sure we have time to hit up Hiro's little business. The service might take longer than your standard restaurant but the food is worth it, and if you eat in or are with a large group Hiro might just give you a little appetizer on the house to tide you over. Hiro takes a lot of pride in his work and it's clear from the artistry in everything he makes. Order enough sushi and he'll have it delivered to your table on a bridge or a boat garnished with carved cucumbers and even, occasionally, carrots carved into butterfly shapes. If I lived in Springfield, I'd get takeout from Happy Sushi so often that I'd be concerned for my paycheck. As it is, it's a nice treat to go for every once in a while, and though it might not look like much on the outside, on the inside it's booming with character. My personal favorites: The Anger Management roll, the Diabla roll, the French Kiss, and the Yammay roll, which I would eat every day if I could. I have a friend who swears by the spicy tuna -- Happy Sushi has made other sushi places in Springfield pale in comparison; none of them spice up their fish enough! The rolls are big and you will not leave hungry, so don't order too much food your first time (unless you're planning to take some home). Okay so this place used to be my favorite. They have amazing food. But lately, this restaurant just thinks that they can decide when they want to work and when they don't. They forget to let you know when they need a day off online. So if you're anything like me, you drive miles to get there because you think you're going to enjoy some mouthwatering sushi, but no. The dreams over. You're not. Why not you ask? Because they think it's okay to just put a piece of white paper on their door that says "temporary closed. Maybe open July 10th." Yes, I said maybe open. Lets be honest, when you see the location the thought of Sushi at 9th and South Grand makes anyone apprehensive. As a matter of fact I'd driven by there several times thinking there was no way I'd buy Sushi there. Well thanks to the suggestion from a few people I stopped by for take out and it was really good. I LOVE this place! I am an avid sushi fan, often making it myself at home, and this place makes some of the best I've had! I would rate Happy Sushi's sushi above even Osaka and Kiku. The owner/chef is VERY friendly and often gives us little extras to try for free. The restaurant has very limited seating, so plan to carry-out; however, if you have the time and there is open seating, I encourage you to stay and dine-in! First let me start by saying I signed up for Yelp just to that I could write a review for this place. When I found that only 6 reviews exist for it, I was shocked. Given the place has not been open a year yet if even but I feel like there should be 100 reviews if not more. My experience here was so good that I knew I had to tell others about it. I was visiting Springfield two days ago and myself and associates decided we needed sushi. We decided to get it Sunday because Saturday night was going to involve adult beverages of the carbonated kind and you can imagine that fish as the meal before beer is unpleasant. This is besides the point. We arrived at 1pm as a group of 5. The door was open but Happy Sushi was not. They actually did not officially open until 4 pm. We walked in and the kind man behind the counter advised they opened at 4. Completely normal reponse. Hey we are still closed come back later. Ofcourse he said this the nicest way possible, however, you could tell he was hesitant. Like he didn't want to disappoint us. As we turned to leave he said no please come in and welcomes us in. Again, this was 3 hours before his normal opening. First note this man comes to work 3 hours early. Second, note this man could have turned us away but it seemed like he just could not. Like it was against every fiber in his body to say no. It was instinctual to advise when someone walks in Oh sorry we are closed but he could have just left it at that. He didn't. He sat us down and asked us to be patient with him as NOTHING was set up at all. It was 3 hours before opening time afterall. He quickly prepared us Miso soup and a cucumber roll that was very tastey. I want to stop in this story and let you know that from this point forward, when I say he brought us food, it is an understatement. What this man creates is art. The fact that it happens to be food is secondary. The fact that it tastes as good as it looks is tertiary. The combined experience is unordinary and by that I mean superior to any sushi establishment I have ever been to. And I have been to many. This man's work belongs in a major city, Vegas, New York, Chicago. Why he is in the ghetto of Springfield escapes me. Once he was completely prepared to create his masterpieces, he came over to take our order. Each of us ordered one staple and one new roll to try from his specialty menu. The special of the day was the "Man on Fire" Roll which was a very flavorful roll brought out on a plate that was literally on fire. The showmanship and presentation was great. As each new plate came, so did the works of art. Instead of plastic dividers between rolls, there was edible cucumber painstakingly carved. No detail was spared on these plates. Placement, color, usage of additional edible items (i.e. seaweed, sauces, roe) all combined to make sushi platters that belong in real 5 star restaurants. As he was preparing all the rolls, he asked us ways to taylor-make our rolls. How spicy would we like our spicy salmon and tuna? Hot Hot? We answered yes! Happy Sushi is a diamond in the rough and I do mean rough. However, the location should NOT discourage you from experiencing this kind and gentle man's mastery of craft, attention to detail, warm manner, and superior sushi. I have never ate at a place that inspired me to run to Yelp and post something to share with everyone. I have ate at hundreds of restaurants in my years. One has compelled me to write about it. I was pleasantly surprised to find this little sushi joint. High quality sushi - especially for the Springfield area. I chose to dine in, but take-out seemed to be the popular choice here. As mentioned by other reviewers, the owner/staff are extremely pleasant. In my case, they forgot to bring out a portion of my meal. They quickly realized it, and didn't end up charging me for those items. It's always a good feeling to sit down at a restaurant to get good food AND good service. In Illinois, you'd be hard pressed to find better sushi outside of certain Chicago establishments. The reviews don't lie. I've yet to have one bad dish here. If I have any complaints it would be that the rolls are sometimes a bit loose. However, I have found that to be a function of how busy the restaurant is- Hiro, the chef, is the only person preparing the rolls. Speaking of Hiro, you'd also be hard pressed to find a more welcoming and accomodating host who also happens to the the chef. If you are in the Springfield area, and are looking for sushi in particular this is the place to go. EDIT: After frequenting Happy Sushi for over a year, I have noticed a considerable uptick in the number of patrons during lunch and dinner hours. That said, the service barely misses a beat. Even more importantly, the quality of food has either remained top notch, or improved since I last left this review. A small restaurant with 7 tables and does mostly take out business. EXCELLENT food and I am now a repeat customer! Do not waste your time looking for another Sushi Bar in Springfield as you will be very disappointed. Happy Sushi is fair priced and excellent food. If you are in a hurry you will want to order ahead and pick it up. This restaurant is not fast food, it is fresh food made to order. Make sure you try the Udon soup and the egg rolls. I have had sushi and sashimi on 4 continents. Japan, Hawaii, Thailand ,Europe and Us to name a few.This tinny hole in the wall is at the top of the heap. I searched the web and decided with all the raves to try Happy. They had an 8 PC and 12 PC sashimi on the menu. I told the cashier I wanted 18 pieces. Well the sushi king made a masterpiece with about 22 pieces. They were all Hugh, fresh and unbelievably flavorful .The three rolls I ordered were equally a real treat. Don't miss the 10-10 roll named for the price. It had cream cheese, spicy crab,shrimp tempura deep fried. One of the best rolls I've erect had. It could hardly fit the 10" box. Who would think in the Midwest? A real gem. Loving it but upset that coming here on business for 40 years I never discovered Happy SUSHI before. read more

As good as springfield sushi will get, I think. I had the spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and red dragon rolls. Ingredients were fresh although the tempura was a bit different that I'm used to. Happy Sushi is located in an almost empty parking lot. When we first pulled up, I wasn't sure we were at the right place. It definitely was not what I expected. The place is small with four tables in the front and three in the back. The server was friendly and so was Hiro. We loved seeing how excited he was to greet every customer. Within 10 - 15 minutes our food was ready. The presentation was great and the sushi was pretty good as well. I prefer a little sauce on my dragon rolls but I really liked the spider roll. My one complaint is that it was hard to eat the rolls since they kept on falling apart. I do think that this a nice place but it's a little overpriced. read more

Seriously, the best sushi in Springfield. Osaka is so overrated compared to this place. HS doesn't have much variety for vegetarians but I'm not a vegetarian. Everything always tastes fresh, delicious and I never thought I would like fruit in my sushi but the Hawaiian and Sunny roll have changed me.
