Happened to be in Newton at lunchtime. Ordered my old standby: chicken and broccoli, a little spicy, with white rice. FINALLY: after living in New Jersey for 8 months I found excellent Chinese food takeout. Happy Wok does have a few tables. Street parking. Friendly service. Good prices. Ate here before a show at the Newton Theater which is right across the street. I had a general tso's chicken combo and a wonton soup. It was made just the way I like it. Thin batter and thin sauce. Nice and crunchy too. Pork fried rice had a good flavor and big pieces of Chinese pork. The egg roll was fresh. The wonton soup broth was dark and flavorful and came with five wontons and a big bag of crunchy noodles. Washed it all down with an ice cold can of Diet Coke. Was surprised to find three Chinese take-out places in the area (I'm not that familiar with this part of New Jersey). This one was rated highest on yelp and the prices seemed reasonable so we gave it a shot. Ordered Chicken Chow Ho Fun, Pepper Steak, Wonton soup, Honey Chicken, eggroll, rice, etc. Everything was really good; better than your average corner takeout spot, and the prices were OK to boot. Every other restaurant on this block seemed to have entree prices twice as high. The restaurant itself is a touch run-down but they do have a small dine-in area and the owners (?) kids were playing up front which was adorable. I would definitely put Happy Wok in heavy rotation if I lived in the area. Pro-tips: -They don't automatically provide utensils, napkins, or soy/duck sauce, but they have large bins up front where you can help yourself to however much you need. This is actually really smart and ecologically conscious - I wonder how many plastic forks (automatically stuck in the Chinese takeout bag at other restaurants) get thrown away every day by people who don't need them. -I only found out after I went (by reading another review) that they have parking behind the restaurant. I didn't know this and since it was Saturday night, there was no street parking, but I did go only 1.5 blocks up and find a municipal lot to park in. read more

Today is May 28, 2024. I just ordered two orders of chicken wings. TERRIBLE!! They were already small and tiny. They fried them so hard that I ate one and threw the rest in the garbage. Happy Family was filled with broccoli, but precious little of anything else. If you like Broccoli then you will love the food here. Egg Rolls were dry as a bone, and so crispy that they must have sat in the deep fryer for decades. The WonTon soup was too salty, and the ... well, forget it. Never again. $44 out the window. After a long day at work I went to pick up my dinner which was a boneless spare rib combination. The meat was completely overdone almost charred beyond recognition. I found this out of course after I brought it home and I still tried to eat as much as I could because I was hungry. I then called the restaurant and spoke with the manager or owner who gave me my food. Manager informed me that sometimes the meat is overdone this way and he consented to give me a full refund. The refund never showed up. They have now lost regular business for me forever. Poor way to run a business. Stay away unless you are willing to eat mediocre food. read more

Friendly family catered business, that has amazingly fresh & tasty sushi! We have never been disappointed with their service or food. We enjoy having their sushi delivered two towns away, always with polite personnel. The restaurant is located across the street from the Newton Theater, which we find enjoyable after a local concert. There best deal for me is the sushi specials it's something like 11$ for 3 decent sized sushi roles and a salad!! Recently moved to Newton. Am slowly branching out and trying to local restaurants. We tried happy wok the other evening. Ordering online is very easy and convenient. The time from order to ready was very short. I ordered Sushi which is always a risky option when your unfamiliar with a particular restaurant, I ordered a salmon and avocado role, which most importantly tasted good and was fresh and didn't make me sick. Less importantly I ordered a salmon and AVOCADO roll and it ended up having cucumber. Which didn't bother me other than not being what I ordered. Again not a huge deal. The other stuff I ordered was as expected. The shrimp egg roll was mediocre. The shrimp was soft with no texture. Overall I will definitely be eating here again. They offer delivery so that's next to try in the future. read more

Great Chinese food! That says a lot since we ourselves used to own a Chinese restaurant! I've tried ho ho's and they were the worst and you can not let decor fool you about the quality of food like chunbo. Happy wok is a small establishment but by far the best Chinese in Newton! Not too greasy, very flavorful and the hot and sour soup is very good! (You can always tell the caliber of a place by their hot and sour soup and what goes in it!) delivery is always punctual and they are always willing to accept a coupon. While it's not really dine-in (you can but its small) it doesn't matter because it's Great food and great service right to your door! read more

Very good experience as far as Thai/sushi takeout from a Chinese joint is concerned. Very nice employees, Thai curries were on point, spicy fried rice was a little off, but I had no complaints of the assortment of spicy tuna/tuna/salmon avocado/dragon rolls ordered. The wasabi was weak if I had to complain, but if you do sushi take out you already have your own preferred wasabi in the fridge. Can't beat these prices though. read more

I ordered from here the other night. Ordered simple stuff like chicken and broccoli. I did not like the chicken and broccoli at all! It was absolutely disgusting!!!! I also had won ton soup. I think the pork in the soup was spoiled. Nothing at all tasted good. This place is very inconsistent one order can taste amazing and a month later totally different! If a customer writes down please make fresh on their online order maybe try a little harder to serve them edible food!! Even my cats didn't eat the chicken or pork!! ***OUR CREDIT CARD SECURITY WAS BREACHED*** I ordered dinner for my family online last night, and then called in the credit card info, as instructed at the end of the order. I was told this is for security purposes. After not receiving my delivery after over an hour had passed, I called back to ask where it was. I received multiple apologies, and an assurance that it would arrive in a few minutes, nice and hot. In other words, they'd not even put it together yet. I confirmed our address, and that the card was charged. When the delivery girl arrived, another 20 minutes later, she told my husband he had to pay for the order. He told her he already had, with his credit card. The delivery girl proceeded to call the restaurant and read from the paper in her hand, my husband's ENTIRE card number, expiration date, and security code. She was loud enough for me to hear two rooms away, and since she was in the apartment hallway, anyone in the three apartments around us could've very easily heard her, as well. So much for security! As a result of this whole ordeal (not so much the wait because busy nights happen, but the privacy/security breach is inexcusable), we will not be giving any more of our business to them. read more
