Where everyone looked out for one another, and treated eachother well. This is certainly no longer the vibe, the staff is very unfriendly and lack common golf knowledge. Every morning my email is getting blasted with a new set of niche rules, everywhere you look, there is a sign explaining new rules and things to consider. This is a community of people who have been golfing here for 15+ years, it would be nice to get treated as such, rather than having every move watched and reviewed by these new corporate policies.

Where to begin? I used to play a lot of golf but in the past 35 years, I don't think I have played…read more35 times. So, this year, I started playing again and made quite a bit of progress. However, winter golf in Connecticut is hard to find and it's too cold out for me. An online search took me to Stinger's in New Britain. It's the most affordable option and has good reviews. Today was my first experience and I really enjoyed it. Frank, the owner, was very helpful and I enjoyed chatting with him about his business and golf in general. If you have never played indoor golf, here are my observations: 1. The distance is pretty accurate. Most of my "good" shots were comparable to what I experienced on the course, as far as distance. 2. Direction may or may not be another story. I will have to wait to judge that and then update this accordingly. I was hooking into the water (and took mulligans) A LOT. 3. Putting is as I expected. I think most people will just try to lag it close enough for a "gimme" or you can select automatic 2-putt. TIP: My putting accuracy improved when I placed the ball in front of the indentation in the floor. 4. I recommend the driving range option for your first hour. It may take you a full hour to get used to swinging indoors and using the tees provided. 5. This is a family-friendly environment. Behave.

I'm a plane spotter - Minnechaug is a great place for it, while golfing. It's like a 2-for-1 deal! About the golf carts, I love driving them. It's a great way to practice driving :) For someone who has ankle issues, it's easier for me to get around. The wildlife brings more joy as you see are able to see different types of birds and animals. I love mallard ducks and cardinals! Regarding the employees, they are super kind and professional. If you are a very serious golfer, it's probably not for you. If you're an average golfer just looking to get out and have some fun on a quick 9-hole course, give it a shot. If you're a bit below average and want less hassle and stress over pace of play.. a good option here. The course yardage itself is fairly short and, as noted above, only 9 holes, but it has some memorable moments and fun approaches. Holes eight and nine are both short Par 3's with significant water hazard potential. Probably the most fun ones. TiP- Bring a couple crappy balls you won't mind losing and maybe keep those ProV1s in the bag for hole 8. The clubhouse has had some improvements since I had last seen it, and now houses the second location for Giovanni's Pizza. The setup gives you a good spot on a deck to have a pint and a slice or two after your round (or before) while watching others tee off on the first hole. You can sit inside instead as well. Parking isn't always great, so car pool if possible.

It's perfect for beginners. There are often a lot of kids learning on the course as well. Generally, play is pretty quick unless the course is busy (like I said - lot of slow beginners). The fastest I've ever played was 90 minutes when there was no one else playing and the slowest was about 2 hours, 15 minutes when we were behind two slow teams. You can rent a club cart (three wheeled pull cart for your club bag) for only $3. I don't think they have golf carts, but you don't really need one since the course is so small. It's not the best or most beautiful course, but it is perfect for beginners.

It was not a very large course, as every hole was stationed immediately right next to another and the average par was about 2. It seemed as though while they have a good chunk of land for the driving range, they took about 20 yds by 5 yards of land and said, "alright let's turn this aisle into a mini-golf course". I will say though, that the green was in great condition. There were no 'natural' obstacles (dead squirrels, bugs, twigs large leaves, etc.), no tears on the green, therefore pretty much leaving us to our own putting vices! You can grab your ball on the 18th hole, so if you get there early enough with a big group of people (5+) you can play out of order and not worry about losing your ball on the 18th. Anyway, I would recommend this place to anyone in the area looking for some mini-golf action, although there are better options about 35 minutes west of here. But since the entire course is right in front of you, I think it's a great course for families that need to have a close eye on their children.

So, for me, a 9 hole, par-3, public golf course where I can play night golf and throw back a few cold bruskis is the perfect place for me. I am not concerned with the quality of the greens, difficulty of the course, depth of the rough, or any of the other things real golf enthusiasts might care about. "Easy" golf courses are challenging enough for me as it is. That being said, Highland Greens is the only lit golf course in the C-T. There's something really cool about playing night golf that makes it more fun (probably because if I suck I can just blame it on the fact that it's too dark). If you're a casual golfer who is looking for a place to go, or if you've always wanted to give it a shot but were afraid of looking stupid, this is the perfect place. And since it'll only run you $13-15 for 9 holes, it won't break the bank either.
