I couldn't have another burger or bbq on my roadtrip, so after reading reviews I walked down to the Harbor Haus for dinner and it was exceptional. As a city slicker I have access to lots of amazing restaurants and Harbor Haus exceeded my expectations. I had the burrata cheese special which was so very tasty, my cocktail was made with local strawberries which are currently in peak season (I had two) and my entree was the local trout and I swear it was the best piece of fish I have ever had. Can't go wrong with this place! The service was wonderful and my table overlooking the lake was a dream. My only regret is that I am only in town for one night, otherwise I'd be eating there again. read more

What a discovery and sad it's taken decades to finally come here. You walk in and the whole side of the restaurant is windows so everyone has a view of Superior. The hostess was lovely and found us a space even though we didn't have a reservation (I would recommend this). Our server Lilly was knowledgeable, attentive and very good. She managed a huge section and timed all of us perfectly so no one was waiting too long for their dishes or drinks. The food is OUTSTANDING!! How has this been under the radar in Copper Harbor? High dinning in the middle of no-where, its wonderful. The trout was super moist and flavorful with crisp skin. The mushroom risotto was cooked perfectly and full of earthy flavors. The beef stroganoff was rich and decadent. The four cheese ravioli was a lot on its own, but paired with the beef and sauce was a perfect match. We ordered a side of spätzle and sauce and it was another fun and delicious dish to try. Our starter was the special of fried burrata cheese over a homemade marinara. The marinara was my favorite part! Acidic, smooth, herby and fill of fresh garden tomato flavor. German beer on tap and a great wine selection. Rolled in at 3:30 on a Wednesday afternoon in August and my husband and I were seated at a table with an exquisite view of the water. We called to make a reservation when they opened at 2:00 and were informed that they were filled for the evening though there would still be drop in seating if we arrived before 4-5:00. Sure enough, by the time we departed @ 4:45, the place was hopping. Call ahead for reservations if you would like a table in the evening or be prepared to wait. The draw here is the view of the water; simply gorgeous. The food is also wonderful, with a good choice of seafood and meat entrees, appetizers and desserts. We began our meal with the tempura white fish with Asian slaw appetizer. It was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with a nice balance of flavors with rubles and pickled ginger. A winner. We chose the scallop special ($48) and the pan cooked trout ($28). Both entrees came with fresh sautéed seasonal veggies, a choice of one side starch (mashed potatoes, au gratin potatoes, rice pilaf, risotto) and a choice of salads (Caesar, garden, beet-feta or watermelon) . We also enjoyed a warm roll with olive oil and herbs to dip. Our meals were beautifully presented, piping hot and well cooked. The seafood was tender with flavorful but not overpowering seasoning and sauces. The veggies were crisp and the potatoes were delicious. We shared a flourless chocolate torte and it was amazing: smooth, rich and not too sweet. With tip our tab came to $130 for two with no drinks. Expect to pay good money for a nice dinner, well prepared, a beautiful view and first class service. read more

We stopped in after our Isle Royale trip and this meal and service ranks among my top 5 ever. The view of the harbor cannot be beat. Everything we ordered- the brussel sprout appetizer, the watermelon and green salad, and the whitefish, exploded with flavor. I typically don't get dessert, but splurged on the maple crème brûlée. Every bite was a symphony of balance and freshness. In the UP it is hard to find this quality of food, due to its ability to get fresh food up that north. I don't know how they do it. Our server was very personable, and even though we came in our camping clothes from just coming for the Island, we were treated very respectfully. I would highly recommend that you visit Harbor Haus and on our next trip to Copper Harbor, we will be back! read more

At about 6:30pm on a Friday night I stopped in and was seated immediately on the patio, with a five star view of the beautiful harbor in Lake Superior. I received quick service from a very pleasant server. My bourbon Keweenaw Backwood Manhattan was excellent. I ordered the Planked Whitefish wrapped in bacon with a garden salad and blue cheese dressing, broccoli and mushroom risotto. The whitefish was very good and the broccoli was perfectly cooked. The salad was crisp and tasty. The risotto was good, but a little larger helping would have been nice and a little more mushroom. I ordered the carrot cake for dessert, which was tasty, but had only a thin layer of cake and was mostly frosting. Overall a very nice meal with a beautiful view. read more

Excellent service, ambiance, food, and inviting patio. From the moment we entered the restaurant and placed our name on the list, the service was fantastic. Friendly and professional. We had just gotten off the boat that brought us back from Isle Royale, and we were tired and hungry. We had an hour to wait so we went to our lodge, unpacked, and practiced yoga, and when we came back we were seated right away. The space is inviting and the views are beautiful--really nice outdoor swatting. Our server, Lily, is a sweet young woman, friendly, very likable, has great recommendations, professional, and funny - Outstanding! We shared: Goat cheeses with mint marmalade and kalamata olives Crab stuffed rissotto balls Cooper Harbot grilled trout with Yukon mashed and risotto Beet salad and Caesar Chocolate ganache with ice cream All was excellent. The Goat Cheese with mint marmalade was one of Lily's suggestions and a delicious pairing for my taste buds. It was a wonderful civilized dinner after being in the wilderness. I've been going to Harbor Haus every year for the duck breast, which is always very, very delicious and something I truly look forward to. The vibe is always good, with beautiful views of Lake Superior, and the waitresses wear traditional German dresses that add a unique charm. The owners are extremely kind, and I always bring my daughters and friends when we visit. They don't take reservations, so there's usually a wait, but we enjoy the food and it's always worth it. I still remember a dessert they used to serve that had to be ordered an hour in advance, and I miss it. Although the quality has dipped a bit over time, the essence of the place remains, and I still consider it the best restaurant in the Upper Peninsula, if not all of Michigan. read more

Pure Michigan Ah! This was my first visit to God's country ( so folks from this area say) Copper Harbor MI! It's a small picturesque town with a gorgeous view of Lake Superior.A lot of trails and outdoor water activities.Not too many food places but the one and only Harbor Haus has food that is to die for! It's German cuisine,fine dining style!The Lake fish and coconut shrimp was on point.Wrapped in bacon and marinated with that ginger glaze this was a marriage made in heaven for that Trout.My friend had the Beef Medallions and lobster tail.The lobster tail wasn't the best but that butter sauce made it okay. The service we received from Kelly was amazing! She answered all of our questions with patience and she is very knowledgeable about the menu.We felt welcomed and will definitely be back anytime we are in the Copper Harbor area! I forgot to take a photo of the appetizer but we started with the Pistachio Crusted Goat Cheese which was delicious and great for sharing with our small group. I had the shrimp in tomato sauce for the entree which was very filling but felt light enough for the hot summer day. Then I finished the meal off with the crème brûlée and that was extremely tasty - not too sweet but very luscious and delicious. The service was amazing - our server was very knowledgeable of the menu and checked on us constantly. We enjoyed our meal here. The hosts were very kind to accommodate our family including 4 children under 10 years old and seated us on our own in their party room. Perfect to keep the kiddos contained and out of the other patrons' hair, and we were able to enjoy our meals with a beautiful harbor view. Imagine staying in a rustic area known for camping and nature while enjoying a culinary experience equal to that of an urban city. What a find! This is an amazing place to have dinner. The food was nourishing and delicious. The view was spectacular and the service could not have been better. I had the smoked pork chops which came with a really great healthy delicious salad (excellent homemade French dressing), German potato salad and kraut. Highly recommend! What a special place! The entire staff was so friendly, warm, and welcoming; especially our server, Shelly and the owners (who made us feel comfortable when we thought we might be underdressed ). Every table, inside and out, has a gorgeous view of Copper Habor and ships coming in from Isle Royale. Everything about this restaurant was top notch! The atmosphere and views were incredible! The staff was welcoming, warm and very knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. We started with the smoked Lake Superior trout spread and it was as excellent! My wife had the watermelon salad which she loved. My house salad had a sweet vinaigrette that was perfect with the salty and garlicky croutons. My mouth is watering as I type this! Entrees included a perfectly cooked and seasoned filet. Wifey opted for the bacon wrapped scallops. She was a little disappointed in how salty they were but overall the meal was delicious! The crème brûlée was great and the accompanying dollops of custard added different realms of flavor to the dessert. This place is well worth a visit if you're in Copper Harbor. My friends and I came here because we were recommended it by a few locals. Before I give my review, I should mention that I was disappointed with the lack of good food establishments in Copper Harbor. This place was by far the fanciest and best food in that town. But when you go to a town where there's no cell reception and hiking opportunities everywhere, you're not expecting/craving a fancy German restaurant. In fact, I'd argue, you're in the mood for some good home cooking restaurants and maybe an interesting brewery. I would also say that when I think of German food, I think of a big pretzel and some type of sausage. I feel the same way about German food as I do Indian, it's better as unrefined comfort food. With all that being said, we were looking for tasty food but in a much more relaxed environment. This restaurant is very fancy. It's on the water and has a beautiful patio. When we got there, we decided to just get apps and dessert because like I said, we weren't in the mood for a fancy dining experience. We got the WI goat cheese and Jagerwurst appetizer - both were VERY tasty. I don't remember what desserts we got but they were super good too. So clearly this place is really good. If you're in the mood for fancy German food after hiking at Isle Royale, this is your place! Two notes: 1) According to my husband, their men's bathroom door doesn't lock, so people bust in on you. 2) All the servers do a dance on the patio as the ferry from Isle Royale comes into harbor. It's cute to watch and they probably get good business from doing that. read more

We have been going to copper harbor with friends for quite a few years and finally planned ahead far enough to get a dinner reservation. The crab cakes and white fish dip were great starters. The special for the night was pork shank with mashed potatoes and gravy and seasonal vegetables. I substituted mushroom risotto for potatoes. This was one of the most delicious meals I have ever had. I'm a big eater and I could barely finish it. Another dish our party had was the bacon wrapped fish. It was delicious but bacon did overpower the fish a bit. The display of the food was beautiful. Had just enough room for half a piece of carrot cake which was fantastic. Service was great and all parts of meal arrived promptly. Will definitely go back. read more

Fantastic food. I had the Gratineed Fresh oysters. Really good. Also I had the the Jager Schnitzel with Spatzle. My husband had the ribeye rare and it was done to perfection. I had a bite and it was excellent tasting. We had the Bourbon pecan pie which was ok but the Belgian soufflé looked like it would have been a winner. I saw 4 ordered at the next table. I will definitely go back. Although the Jager schnitzel was good, I would like to try trout or whitefish next time. Staff was great. Very attentive. read more
