We got off to a bit of a rough start, we were seated for quite a while before we saw a server and the menus were so worn that you couldn't make out some of the offerings. Visited again yesterday. Ordered from the bar and sat outside. Service was friendly and helpful. The bar was pretty busy, so it took a little longer to place my order and get my food, but that was okay. Husband ordered the chicken sandwich with fries, and I had the southwest salad. Both were pretty good. The ambiance is laid back casual slightly dark bar with plenty of indoor seating. Outdoors, there's a picnic table and a couple of small glass tables with 4 chairs on the other side of the door. Looking for fine dining.... Wrong place. Looking for a great local family restaurant. This fits the bill perfectly, hence the 5 star rating. Great food. We had the beer battered haddock with a baked potato. It would have been easy for the two of us to share one plate, as it was we each had four nice sized pieces of fish and a nice baked potato. If you are interested in a good hearty meal this would probably make you happy. Our waitress was great, on occasion almost telepathic, as she showed up with a to go box as we were discussing how fortunate our dog was to be able to eat this great fish... absent the beer batter (sorry Lexie)... They had a decent beer selection as well as mixed drinks and wine. The place was neat and clean, but a bit dated. Again, it fit the bill nicely. Maybe some updates would help the place, but everyone else seemed to be having great time. We travel a bit in our RV and enjoy eating with the locals. We ate dinner here both nights we stayed. I found the French Onion soup to be very good, scratch made. My companion had a salad and the Rueben and was pleased. The second evening we got beers and I was happy with their offerings of craft beers. We both got the Walleye and it was scrumptious. What was weird was the 'seat yourself' part. The first night we wandered around a bit before finding a table in the back room. The back room is not as nice looking as the main dining area where we found a table the second night. Today my family and I were in the harbor for the day, and we decided to stop in at the Mariner to get some lunch. We had a table of 7, with relatives visiting from Arizona, Appleton and some locals. We ordered 3 appetizers, 2 pizzas, and a few sides. I would like to start by saying the waiter was great, and the appetizers were phenomenal. What was not phenomenal however was the pizza, as well as the cashier, 'Anthony'. Both the pepperoni and cheese pizzas were barely cut, a step down from being burnt (very dark, which the kids did not touch) and extremely minimal sauce. Not once slice of the cheese pizza was eaten, and while we ate about 5 square pieces of the pepperoni pizza, this was due to some leftover marinara sauce from the appetizers. We informed our waiter of this issue, and he simply said they would take care of us up front. When we got to the front, we were greeted by a larger fellow named Anthony who was nice at first, but once we showed him the state of the pizzas and asked for them to be taken off the bill he became very argumentative. (Mind you we are 5 square pieces of two large pizzas TOTAL-- and we did not take the pizza with us). Our bill was nearly $100, and with our dissatisfaction and us not eating or taking over 95% of the pizzas with us, we figured at least one pizza would be comped off of the bill. All Anthony did is say that's how their pizzas come, and not to order them next time if we don't like them. He offered to give us $10 off of the bill, and would not reason with us. He did not attempt to get his manager or the owner. We paid the bill and left, but this will be our last time going to The Mariner. I am very saddened by this, as I love the food and have never had a bad experience in all of the years I've been coming. So instead of comping the pizzas to remedy this situation they are now going to be losing out on my family and friends' money, as we will not be back. I would recommend you go to the Lake Effect! Great service, great vegan options, awesome place all around! Thank you for labelling your vegan options and thanks for having such a great, welcoming atmosphere! We had the vegan egg salad (tofu) sandwich, which actually counts as a meal: the filling is delicious and generous. Bread is pan toasted (!). +Lettuce and tomato. I would say it needs a tad more flavor but overall great. The sweet potato fries are decent but the regular fries are perf. For appetizer, house made tortilla chips and the black bean mango salsa (yum). We scarfed it so no picture. Other veg options: any salad subbing egg salad for meat (could work depending on the salad), a designated vegan salad (sounds yum, has dried Michigan tart cherries for starters!), falafel dish with vegan option for tzatziki. The reason I know the vegan options is because they label their menu -- what a dream, haha. Final note about the service. Everyone working there was friendly and professional. The man taking care of us (at the bar where we were watching Euros) was super on top of everything. We visited the Mariner on our trip up from the lower peninsula. By the time we came into Eagle Harbor all of the restaurants were closed. Dan not only let us in, but fired the fryer back up so our group of 8 could eat dinner. We are so grateful that they accompanied us! Thank you Dan and staff!! read more

We have been coming up to copper harbor many many years. We have always frequented the mariner a few times while up here. We have been slowly reduced the number of visits due to the food quality. We just went again and unfortunately this will be our last visit. Food was sub par. Edible but not enjoyable. They have the same tired menu and are using lower quality ingredients. The Rueben, which has been a staple for some of us, just hit a new low. Rather than using real corned beef they have replaced it with a processed lunch meat version of corned beef which is tasteless and a weird consistency. The result was a greasy sauerkraut sandwich. No corned beef flavor at all. The rest of our entrees were below average as well. Too bad they have let the quality of their food slide to this level. The atmosphere is great but we came here to eat and it was an unpleasant experience....again. Do better Mariner! read more

Okay so I just came back from going to this place and I have some things to say 1. Do NOT go to the back dining area, you WILL be forgotten, our party of 6 had to wait around an hour to get food 2. One of the people I went with got a burger and all the ingredients were undercooked and the cheese was barely melted, but the wait staff gladly took it back to the kitchen to get heated up 3. I got the chicken wings with BBQ sauce and blue cheese, everything tasted amazing except the blue cheese was a bit watery 4.everyone else at our table loved the food and I personally thought the French fires were perfectly crisp and the BBQ sauce was amazing 5. We waited for at least an hour and watched people around us who arrived later get served first. The food was terrible! One in our party got a totally raw burger! It was cold in the middle! The staffs answer was that the cook is new. The fish tacos is just a bunch of breading with very little fish. When we tried to pay our bill, nobody came! We stood at the register waving our arms until finally a "manager" came to take our money. When we told of our horrible experience, he too made excuses about the "new cook". No apologies given. The food here was really good. We came to Copper Harbor for a few days and this is one of the few restaurants in town, but it's definitely one of the better ones. They have a really good menu selection, full bar, plenty of seating and a good atmosphere. The service was okay. Don't get me wrong everyone was nice it was just slow and they were not as attentive (not refilling drinks, not coming back to check and not asking if we want more booze). We came here three times during our stay: two dinners and a lunch. It was great. I'd definitely go back. Everything tasted great and was really flavorful. There Moroccan Chicken Soup was damn tasty. My friends who are working at the Delaware mine took me here for dinner. My family always goes to the Harbor haus when in Copper harbor. This is a rating for the "Great Lakes Chowder". If you look at the pic of what I received you'd agree that it was really potato soup. I've had this chowder over the years and it was pretty good but they dropped the ball on this soup today. I had to excavate the potatoes to get at the few morsels of fish and carrots. Great food, nice nautical/ rustic decor. Definitely would stop and eat here again! Homemade lake fish chowder, local artisan bread, and coffee that is ground each day. Nice crisp fresh salad, which is harder to get "in the a** end of nowhere" rural America. But before you think that of here, go to the state park down the road before dinner. Has a great restored 1844 Army Fort and shipbuilding/shipwreck site, in idyllic forest and a cascading creek, with nice walking trails. All right where the copper boom in Michigan began. We went here today. They had the sign that said seat yourself so we did. We were at a table right next to the bar in the front of the dining room. Mind you everyone had to walk past this table coming into the restaurant and the wait staff going out to the tables. We sat there for about 10 mins and no one came up to us. Then a family of 6 came in and the jumped right up to help them. They were given menus and were asked for drinks. We were like ok maybe they will come to us next.... Not the case. An older set of ladies came in and they were acknowledged as well. As we just sat there looking to see if they would even see us at this point. The waitress just kept walking by and not even looking at us. So we got up and left. This was the worse experience I have had at a restaurant ever. And I will not be returning. read more

We were pleasantly surprised with a great meal. I had the white fish entrée. If I had a critique, it would be that the butter "sauce" with sun-dried tomato should include larger pieces of sun-dried tomato and maybe add some capers. (But I am a sucker for capers.) E had the quesadilla. Which as also delicious. I suspect the tartar sauce & salsa are made in house? If not, I would love to know where to purchase them. The tartar sauce had a thicker consistency than what you normally are served, and the salsa had a little "kick". They were super busy when we were there, but service was still attentive. One last mention - Ginger Garlic Vinaigrette.... I refused to give up my salad plate (which still contained a little bit of this dressing) to make room for the entree, as I was not ready to have that dressing leave me! read more

There's really not many restaurants in this area to choose from in Copper Harbor. The first time we tried to eat here, during a recent vacation, it was a Monday night. We quickly discovered that things shut down early in Copper Harbor (fiveish) or have not been open at all during the pandemic. By the time we got to this restaurant, on a Monday night, there was no seating available and they absolutely would not let us place a to go order, citing that their dining room was full and the kitchen was overwhelmed. I call BS on that. With the pandemic only so many tables were being used, so they certainly should not have been at the "max" when their dining room was not as full as it would have been during times before the pandemic. I still can't believe they wouldn't let us (or anyone else) place a to go order. I can't believe that before the pandemic they wouldn't take orders to go when their dining room was full. Oh well, it didn't keep us from trying again the next day. The next day we went between lunch and dinner and we were able to get a table immediately. The tables were placed at least six feet away from each other and were bare of salt, pepper, and ketchup. Condiments were brought out once patrons were sitting and I did observe them cleaning them, off to the side, before they were brought out. I also saw other customers looking for seats and not being assisted........more than one group left while we were there when they didn't get waited on. I was not really that impressed with the service. Masks were worn by the staff, but not all were worn correctly. It does absolutely no good to wear a mask that doesn't cover your mouth AND nose, but they didn't seem to know that or they just didn't care. I got the Clipper which is a chicken salad sandwich, I got it on ciabatta. It was good. My husband got the Monkey Fist, a grilled chicken sandwich with all kinds of good stuff on it. I hate to give this to a restaurant in a small town but my goodness this was horrible food. I ordered the sirloin steak medium rare and not only it's my steak still mooing but the end that is almost cooked you can't even put a fork through it . Utterly gross. The dinner salad came with raw zuchinni in it which was extremely weird. On another note the server was funny . Just beware and if you do decide to come here DO NOT order the steak. If this restaurant were just about anywhere but the northernmost tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula it might have gotten 3 stars (only because there is no half-star option. If there were I would increase that to 3.5 stars). It's good. Not "knock your socks off" or fantastic, but really decent. They have a pretty comprehensive menu with something on there for everyone, they offer a full bar and the prices are fair. I come here every time we come up to Copper Harbor and I would recommend it. Having said that, there aren't a whole lot of choices up here. Will certainly go back. The bottom line: decent food, full bar, friendly and good servers. read more
