We first popped in here during the Irontown Classics Car Show. The rain was just starting and we ducked in. The place was rather busy afterward, so I was glad that we scored some seats at the bar. The patrons there are friendly right off the bat (and have been so for every visit afterward). Everyone loves to talk about the sports that are on the TV (there are quite a few TVs at Smarty's!), as well as discuss the area happenings. We have been made to feel welcome, with genuine smiles and greetings every time we walk in. As an NMU Wildcat, I really love that they show the 'Cats in action whenever they're televised. I've really missed being here in the Yoop, so glad to call Smarty's my local watering hole.

The typical old wood vibe of many UP establishments that have survived the test of time. A spot for pool in the back, guys pee in a trough instead of urinals LOL, there's chalkboard doors with drink specials, random musical performances, a patio out back for hangin and smoking, it's just a great place to enjoy the Yooper life and meet a local or five. It's an easy place to become a regular just based off of the bartenders alone (Tori is a gem, she won't fail to make you laugh). They have great merch like shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, pins, shot glasses, etc. (I designed a few of their stickers while I was in college a decade ago, so glad to see they still sell them grab a buffalo drinking a PBR that I drew while drinking a $1 PBR at the Nickel one night in 2015). Popcorn is available, bubble hockey is a must, try a Nickelade or a green tea shot. I know they had a build your own Bloody bar at one point but I'm not sure if it's a regular thing anymore, if you see it happening don't miss it. We wanted an evening out and decided on the Thunder Bay Inn for their Saturday evening prime rib…read morespecial.  We hadn't been there for nearly a year and were pleased when we got in to see that they were now well staffed.  Got a table right away and after a bit of a wait someone finally came to wait on us.  We ordered the prime rib dinners and I had a draft beer.  We waited and waited and the waitress didn't bring our salads, she had to walk by our table every time she went to the work station.  Finally she brought our salads and then brought our meals before we even had a chance to put dressings on our salads, no time to enjoy or salads.  While my wife's prime rib looked nice, if a little fatty, mine looked like it had been cut some time ago and left sitting somewhere, it was at least  fat and just verily warm to the touch.  There was only one small pat of butter for my roll and potato and the waitress never came back so we could ask for more.  When the waitress brought our dinners my beer glass only had a small amount left in it and I didn't get a chance to ask for a refill before the waitress walked off.  No one ever did come back to ask us if everything was okay with our dinners or if we needed anything more. We'll give them another try once tonight's experience fads in our memory, but if service and food haven't improved we'll have to find someplace else for dinner out.
