Diner in its finest form. Clean and lots of tables so you can come with a large group. Service is friendly and food came out at a normal rate. I've seen complaints on the speed of getting food but you need to keep in mind, you're at the end of the road up here, things might run a little slower or there may not be as many workers around. The food was very good. The patty melt was the star of the show, full of caramelized onions, burger cooked perfectly, crispy toast. Onion rings were also really good! Soup was tasty and herby. Went there yesterday for lunch. It was their last lunch for the season and they were out of some things. We Had a burger, BLT and fries. Food was good, fries were very good, but they didn't have ketchup at the table, had to use ketchup packets which was annoying. Prices were on the high side. Fountain pop was 3.75 which is ridiculous. Service was ok, but they only had one person doing everything in the dining room and she was overwhelmed and stressed. Some customers walked out after waiting a long time and not getting seated even though there were open tables. read more

We've been coming up to Copper Harbor for 7 years now and always enjoy Tamarack Inn's breakfast. The chef knocks it out consistently. I ordered eggs over easy 3days in a row and they were all perfect! We usually arrive at the time of year when new waitstaff are being trained for the fall season but that's fine because they are always nice and the regular waitress trains them on the job so she's always got her watchful eye out. read more

Had the special, beef brisket sandwich. It's easy to tell that they are doing the best that they can with the current restrictions. Food was delicious. Coffee was okay. Workers seemed very stressed and did not come across as all that welcoming to start with. As the place closed up and people were filtering out they seems to relax a bit and more friendly. We stopped in for breakfast around 7 a.m. Food was reasonably priced, decor what you'd expect for a mom and pop restaurant in a tourist area. We had an omelette and oatmeal, both of which are difficult to screw up. The side order of thick cut bacon was delicious. Like most places in Keweenaw County, they don't accept AMEX. The real clincher was the service. We were cheerfully greeted (and so were other patrons), coffee came quickly, food came quickly and we were on with our day of exploring the area quickly. We liked it. It was a bit kitsch inside, but the food was decent enough. I think the flies were what I disliked the most. I was swatting away flies our entire meal and my husband found a fly in his salad-- that he got from the salad bar. Not that it's their fault, but it did suck a bit having to deal with so many of those buggers. The pasties were good and the pizza was good, too! I was actually quite impressed with the pizza. We'd probably try another restaurant if in town again, but we'd definitely eat there again based on food quality. I just hope those flies have been taken care of. read more

My husband and I were just kicked out of this establishment. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. We were seated immediately after a group of foreign exchange students from China, who's group of seven was split into two groups. Group one was placed in a seat next to us while the second waited for a table. They never got it. After waiting a half hour they took a empty dirty table and was told to leave, because they had to "wait their turn" despite pleas from their seated compatriots. The waitress, who was also ours, told them very loudly and rudely that if they wanted to sit together then they should have waited. They were confused since they were seated there by them, quoting what they had said. The waitress bluntly told her that she was lying and that their friends would have to wait their turn. Saying to customers that they "Have to wait their turn" was a repeated phrase from both wait staff. We ordered and waited 45 mins for our food. I attempted to catch the waitress a few times to ask about the wait or some sweetener for our coffee, but they were so rude to our neighbors that I shied away. They were moving quickly, darting between tables to deliver food and working the register. When the waitress came with our food, she chastised us for asking about it, saying "Here it is, you just had to wait your turn. " My husband was livid. He asked for the sweetener, and the waitress replied that we should have asked. We explained that she was busy, and she retorted that she was here. At which point my husband informed her that she would not be getting a tip. So the waitress took our food away and said "well then you don't get to eat!" He blew up, and she told us to leave. The waitress at the register called after my husband (who was saying loudly that the service was awful and the worst he has ever had in his life) that he was "disgusting" and "don't ever come back here! We have a five star rating!" The other waitress cheered and clapped and heckled after us as we left. It was mortifying. On our way out of Copper Harbor we were stopped by a local who apologized to us, and let us know that the folks who owned and ran the restaurant was known for racist, beligerant behaviour towards their guests. I will say that in all transparency, there was only two waitresses, one cook and one bus boy. I can't review the food, because it was taken from us. If we could have, we would have left after the harsh words given to our neighbors, but we didn't want to leave without paying. We were on a very tight schedule on our last day of vacation and looking at a nine hour drive home, so hindsight is 20/20. read more

Owners wife is a liar, and mean! Had breakfast there yesterday, went back today, sat down, she threw the lunch menu at us and said "it's lunch!" Interesting place to say the least. Sign placed directly inside the door stating it is a state law that you must disclose any food allergies to your server and they may not be able to accommodate. It is also printed on the menu. I don't like onions so I was not able to order a handful of things because there are absolutely no substitutions or omissions. When we walked in the owners wife was trying to argue with a customer and stated "I don't have TIME for this." and left the customer standing at the counter. I really want to give it 5 stars. I do. The pasty I ordered was the absolute best pasty I've ever had. However, I would rather eat my trail mix than return because of the attitude of the chef. My husband ordered our food to go because we had dogs with us. He paid the server and was putting a portion of the cash back into his wallet before dropping some singles down for a tip. The chef was standing near the register watching him and before he had a chance to leave a tip the chef announced loudly "no more take out orders! No one ever tips on take out orders!". We went to the Tamarack Inn this morning and the wifey was ready for battle (literally hand to hand combat) after reading the previous reviews of how rude and disrespectful the owners were. We were happy to see that this restaurant has been under new management for the last year or so. The original owners got the restaurant back from the nut balls that were running it. We were relived to see a new menu without all the threatening language. Food was good, service was a little slow but the one waitress did the best she could keeping the customers happy. I thought some of the other negative reviews were exaggerating, but wow... I can not say enough about how disappointed I was in my short visit to this diner. The couple of servers on staff are extremely slow and rude. There is no acknowledgment when you walk in. We waited at our table for about 15 minutes before deciding it would be faster to just ask for a couple pasties to go. When we walked up to the counter to ask if we could just get those to go, the lady first acted annoyed that we were bothering her and then laughed to herself and said no. I asked if we could have some if we sat at the table and she said yes. (??). We were so taken aback by the rudeness in there that we said to just forget it, which the counter lady seemed to prefer. Side note- I can understand why I never see or hear of mountain bikers in the Tamarack. No bike racks, and a very old rude crowd. Steer clear. Head to the Pines, the Mariner, or the Mountain Lodge instead. read more

A fairly standard diner, this place would normally get 3 stars from me, but two things stood out: homemade jam and bread made right on the premises, and fantastic seafood. The trout was some of the most tender and flavorful I've ever had. Both dinner and breakfast were very good here. Breakfast was not as cheap as I might expect at a diner, but the portions were large and filling. Had a lovely breakfast on a cold rainy morning here. Scrambled eggs were obviously powdered (standard military fare) and the pancakes were home made goodness. We tried stopping here for breakfast - it was 11:02 and when we walked in, we were yelled at by a female server and told that they were closed from 11-11:30am to switch over for lunch and told to leave and come back later. The sign said "open" and there was nothing on the door describing their limited hours. We went back 2 days later and my boyfriend and I were meeting my friend, her husband and their 2 children. When we asked about seating for 6, the same woman said that we'd have to wait for a large enough table because they didn't push tables together to accommodate larger parties. There were only 2 areas that would seat 6... even though there were probably 6+ empty 4-top tables. I can't comment on the food, but the service was terrible. We waited for our friends and went down to the Pines for a fantastic breakfast and more than very pleasant and accommodating wait staff. read more

We were thrown out of the Tamarack Inn restaurant in Copper Harbor, Michigan. We had driven to the Upper Peninsula to see the leaves, and went here for breakfast. A quiet group of Asian tourists were seated nearby. When the rest of their party attempted to join them, the waitress was abusive and dismissed their polite attempts to explain. We waited over 45 minutes after ordering; the same waitress did not return to our table or bring the sweetener we requested. We had limited time in the area and wanted to leave quickly. When we flagged down another waitress and asked her to please check on our food, the first waitress returned with our plates and brusquely told us to wait our turn, as she had with the tourists. I asked about the sweetener and she said I should have flagged her down. I made an "O" with my fingers and said, "You get zero tip." She said something about "You get zero food" and picked up our plates. At that point I stormed out, shouting angrily, and they shouted just as angrily back at me. Leaving town, we heard from a local that the restaurant had a reputation for similar incidents. They were also alleged to have treated employees of foreign origin shamefully. We're Caucasian, but my wife has purple hair and I have piercings. If you fit their ideal of good Americans maybe your turn will come faster. read more

Food was fine....let me tell you about the service. In my experience, locals are treated with priority. When we arrived, no one said anything to us for 5 minutes, yet walked by us a bunch of times. There was no "be with you in just a minute" or even a smile. Finally we sat down and our order wasn't taken for at least 30 minutes. Again, no acknowledgement! Finally, we flagged someone down....who wasn't our waitress and begged her to take our order. She said "we'll, we are busy", but took our order. You know, I don't care that you are busy, I was a server for 10 years, what I don't like is being ignored and the lack of courtesy of saying that its going to be a few minutes.
