Highly recommend Harbor Mexican Cafe! We were an out-of-town team hosting a conference nearby and staying at the La Quinta Inn in La Habra. After a very long conference day, we wanted to bring in a casual Mexican dinner for about 20 people to enjoy together in the hotel lobby -- and Harbor Mexican Cafe was perfect! We ordered four platters: two sampler platters, a taco platter, and a burrito platter, plus extra rice and beans. Depending on the platter, they also came with chips and salsa, rice and beans, and salad. There was plenty of variety for our group, and the food was wonderful -- authentic, flavorful Mexican food, not the typical chain-restaurant version. The staff was fantastic from beginning to end. It was easy to place our large order over the phone, everything was ready right on time, and it was packaged extremely well for us to transport back to the hotel. Our team loved the meal, and I would absolutely recommend Harbor Mexican Cafe whether you're stopping in to eat at their small restaurant or ordering food for a group or event. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I stopped by again on my way home today to grab a to-go order for myself to enjoy when I get home! Great food, great staff, and a wonderful experience all around. We'll definitely remember this place the next time we're in La Habra! UPDATE 1 day later - UPDATE: I'm sitting at home enjoying my leftovers from Harbor Mexican Cafe the next day, and they are STILL absolutely delicious! Seriously -- these folks know how to cook authentic Mexican food. Harbor Mexican Cafe is one of those little places that feels like it's been there forever, but not in a rundown or dated way. It's actually quite contemporary inside, just in a way that feels like it understands exactly what it needs to be. There are also plenty of things on the menu that look really good, but I have a hard time straying too far from my favorites. What can I say? I love cheese. We ordered the albondigas, exactly how I wanted it. The vegetables were cooked perfectly- tender but still flavorful,and the broth was beautifully balanced with all the aromatic flavors. The carne asada was absolutely divine. The seasoning was perfection! The kids ordered the milanesa, which they happily shared. My picky daughter approved, and my son couldn't stop complimenting the food, and our incredibly kind, attentive, and warm server, Monique. She made our experience even better! The Super Combo with shredded chicken was also really good. The chicken itself was a little salty for my taste, but overall, everything we tried was delicious. Of all the Mexican food places in La Habra Fullerton area, which you could pretty much throw a rock and just hit one,, that I've been to in my 53 years growing up and living in this area, I love this place. It's small it's family owned. You get chips and salsa when you sit down their mole is outstanding. In fact I can't think of very many places around here that actually have mole let alone really good mole. And my wife and I are about to go for a second time for lunch to try something else. Their food here is good. Trust me if you don't pay attention, you'll miss it, it's small. It's next to some stupid Korean chicken place that's probably already closed down, just don't sleep on this place. I'm telling you it looks like it's in a strip mall full of weirdo Korean food or something I don't know but this place is awesome. Oh and I almost forgot they're margaritas are insane if you come here for nothing else come here for the margaritas and the chips and salsa. I almost don't want to even review this because I don't want it to become crowded but then again I don't want it to close. Had lunch there today. I ordered two beef hard shell tacos which came with rice and beans. I thought the tacos were very filling and tasted good. The rice and beans were very average. When I got my bill I noticed the cost of the meal was higher than the price listed on the menu. It was not significant but it was higher. The waitress told me that the menus do not reflect the actual cost of the item you order. The actual cost when an item is rung up on the register, not the menu, is the actual cost. Had an appointment in the area and searched Yelp for a good spot to have lunch, and this came up as a choice. They definitely didn't disappoint. It's a cute and cozy spot, and service was great. The food was outstanding. Chips and salsa came out first, and was absolutely delcicious. We also shared the appetizer taquitos, which were crispy and not greasy at all. They were well-filled and topped with cream, lettuce, cheese and pico de gallo. Although it was a serving of 4, it was generous. I got the machaca burrito, and my man got a shredded beef wet burrito. I wanted something other than Asian food. I was really excited because I haven't had Mexican food in a while. Parking: There's a small plaza, so finding a spot can be a hit or miss. Ambiance/Environment: I looove the decor here. The colors, pictures, and warm ambiance felt like i was transported to Mexico. They have a medium sized space with a decent amount of indoor seating. Throughput was also quick after ordering. Food & drinks: 1. Huevos con machaca - Dry aged shredded beef cooked in peppers, onions, tomatoes, and scrambled with two eggs. They serve breakfast all day! What?! This is similar to an omelette but scrambled and served with beans and rice. I really enjoyed this dish! 2. Pozole - Traditional Mexican red soup with chunks of pork & hominy. Wow .. this is the most authentic pozole I've had in a while. It is served with the usual lettuce, radish, and limes. There was a generous amount of pork and hominy. Sooo flavorful! 3. Quesabirria tacos - I looove quesabirria! Make sure to drench the taco in the consome to give it more flavor. These are their most popular tacos, and I could definitely tell why. 4. Mixed fajitas - Their fajitas are back! This contained a mixture of chicken, steak, & shrimp. This came out on a smoking hot plate. I decided to go with corn tortillas. This was also served with the usual sides of fresh avocado, beans, rice, and salsa. The proteins were cooked and seasoned well. 5. Chile relleno & hard shell taco combination - A chile filled w/ cheese, dipped in a light egg batter, fried, & covered with salsa ranchera & cheese. I ordered this combo with a beef hard shell taco. The chile relleno was sooo delicious! The chile is a green pepper stuffed with cheese and fried. I love how generous they are with the salsa ranchera. This was also served with rice and beans. 6. Delicious Mexican food. I was in the area and I stopped in for lunch. I love Mexican food, but I wanted something light. I tried the LA tostada with chicken. Delicious! Very juicy seasoned shredded chicken breast ( lots of chicken they did not skimp) with lettuce (not just iceberg, like a garden mix) flavorful beans, other vegetables, topped with a big dollop of guacamole and sour cream. We ordered the Arroz Con Pollo and Mole chicken. Lots of yummy sauce on the Arroz Con Pollo. The flour tortillas were also served hot and tasted home made. The waitress wa great as was the atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food needs a lot of work. The steak was only cooked on one side and almost no flavor, eggs were not cooked to my order, hash browns tasted like they were cooked with bad oil, the fish tacos had no flavor amd overpowering flavor of onions, and lastly the beans had no flavor. My boyfriend and I found this gem after we had a hike on a trail near by. We've been to this plaza before to go to Egg Bred, but we've also been wanting to try the other restaurants here so we chose this place for lunch. We had chips and salsa and also got some Mexican Cokes to drink. I really wanted to try their chile rellanos, but unfortunately they were all out today so I settled for a couple crispy shredded beef tacos. My boyfriend got a special cali wet burrito with carne asada. It had both red and green sauce with it and a chipotle cream sauce on top. Our food came out hot and it looked amazing, especially my boyfriend's burrito. It was so huge he could only eat half of it. I tried some of it as well and it was really bomb. The sauce was super flavorful and the carne asada was meaty and delicious. My tacos were really good as well. They were crunchy and not too greasy. I liked the generous amount of cheese on top too. The server brought out chips and salsa and was polite and pleasant. The chips were crunchy and fresh. The salsa had good flavor but it was a bit mild for my taste, I prefer more kick to my salsa. My food was delivered quickly and efficiently It looked delicious. I dug into the beans, yum - creamy and great flavor. The rice was also yummy with more flavor than I usually experience with red Mexican rice. I was a bit surprised when I dove into the huevos rancheros, the base tortilla was fried crunchy. It was a bit harder to cut but it DID taste delicious. The ranchero sauce had tremendous flavor and when I cut through the yolk and let it run out into the dish - omg it was delightful.
