Bronx this past January and am slowly getting familiarized with the area. Being a b-girl and all, it was inevitable that I would end up in here at some point, right? =] For anyone who knows me, I've been a dedicated Brooklyn-head and Harlemite during my time in NYC. Yes, I've also been known to sneer at the hardcore gentrification of both of my old 'hoods, but I definitely got used to the wine shops/health food stores/restaurants that come with all that. Due to the 2008 market crash, the "SoBro" tag has yet to fully realize itself, but there are a few signs that it's encroaching. One could say that South Bronx Yoga is a sign of the times, but it's not a snotty, overpriced yoga studio that caters solely to the local gentrifiers. The teacher/yogi Amy Moran has been running SBY for about 8 months out the beautiful 810 Studio, a mere 3 blocks away from and in the shadow of the most overpriced thing in NYC: Yankee Stadium. Classes are $10 (or $3/sliding scale) for an hour long class that begins with some centering, chanting, poses, inversion, rest and end chanting, making it both affordable and accessible to all. It was not too packed, and people varied in levels from beginner, to people who had taken 5-10 classes previously, to me (dancer and former yogi-wannabe). Though home-grown, SBY provides a limited number of yoga mats, as well as support blocks, straps, blankets, and tissues. Classes are only a couple of times a week and clearly listed at www.southbronxyoga.com. Definitely go to the website and reserve a spot in class if you plan to go. I have to say that I've taken a LOT of yoga classes all over the country, ranging from the real stuff to the craptastic-$20-run-through-poses-scary-fast-just-so-you-sweat-but-the-teacher-don't-know-shit classes. I went in with an open mind, and Amy's guidance got me centered in a way that I have missed over the past few years of not practicing. I can do all this stuff by myself, but it's definitely better to practice with this humble sangha. Anyone in the neighborhood can benefit from Amy's dedication to her yoga practice that inspired her to start SBY. Overall, it's a great place for a beginner or an advanced practitioner who would just like some guidance from a well-centered yogi and to practice with others. And it rocks that if you live in the BX that you can walk here!

Yogiando NYC represents many important things to me. "Yoga is said to be the #1 healer on earth". However, not every yoga session can or will ever be compared to Yogiando NYC's yoga sessions, lead by this wonderful healer Ms. Rosana Rodriguez. Yogiando NYC represents to me is having a great opportunity to experience the power of healing through Yin Yoga. When I first attended Rosana's class I was a bit hesitant Because I though it would be one of those classes where we would have to bend over backwards & do strenuous flips. But on the contrary, it was a beautiful and peaceful experience. I do not attend as often as I would love to because of health conditions. But when I do attend it makes me feel 99.9% much better, by just walking into the class. Rosana is such a great caring individual that she makes the environment so welcoming and easy to adapt. She not only is helping me & many more learn how to self heal through the power of yoga. She also motivates us to feeling beautiful, comfortable with ourselves, and how to gain the power we need to push our own limits, in a very peaceful and meaningful way. so let me first acknowledge how my name makes this whole review kinda shady, but as much as an…read moreinternet stranger can assure you - i am a real person, not related to or friends with the folks who run this studio. i just came from my first session with rosana and i loved every bit of it. she greeted me and my friend as we walked in and asked how we heard about her studio - in a truly internety moment, i said through a retweet from a person who is all about holistic wellness online and she responded by bouncing in place with absolute joy. she then gave us each a warm hug, as though she was welcoming back a good friend. hook, line, and sinker. the room was dimly lit with soothing music playing in the background. mats with two blocks and a blanket were well spaced throughout. she admitted that it was cold, but this was out of her control. at the beginning, she asked if there were any non-english speakers as she would provide spanish instruction too, but since there weren't any, she proceeded in english. her instructions were clear and gentle, my body felt safe with her guidance through yin yoga. at the end, we chatted with her a little bit and learned that she had her baby shower in that very space 21 years prior. and when it came time to look for a space for her studio, this happened to be one of the ones she thought about. i was so excited following the session, i asked if it would be possible to volunteer for her. this is the kind of yoga space i've been seeking for the past year and i want to do whatever i can to support rosana. i hope you do the same.

I have had a number who just watches what is going on most of the time. She is the opposite. She participates most of the time, which is great when you're feeling like you don't want to do it. The first time I had one of her classes, she did everything we did, which was 24 hours after her running a marathon in Seattle. She literally just came to class straight from the airport. Kudos to her. If she can do that and participate, I can just do the class!
