I really wanted to like this studio more than I do, unfortunately. Similar to what some other reviewers have stated, it's not the most organized operation. A few of the classes/instructors are really great (Mimi and LG, for example), but I generally found it really distracting how MUCH all the instructors talk so much during the classes. It's really hard to focus/concentrate; that might be fine for some people but I had never encountered a yoga studio like that before. Finally, the studio space is not always that clean. read more

Spring Cooper is an excellent teacher and we had such a dynamic class. Not only did I learn a lot, but I was challenged, received helpful feedback, and had the type of environment you like to have out of a group class. Came here with a a girlfriend of mine and fell in love with the class. It was my first time ever engaging in a yoga class. The general area is nice and prices are great! I try to give COVID context in my reviews, since the current state of things is important. I went to a yoga "class" at this studio post-Omicron surge when things were starting to pick back up in-person but not fully yet. Masks and vax card checks were still mandated in NYC. I really, really wanted to like it, but...this wasn't a class. This was following along with a live Zoom video. To be clear, I knew it would be livestreamed and would have been fine with the instructor verbally giving adjustments or reminders on what to do from his mat, but I (perhaps naively) expected more than just someone talking us through poses. I could have done this from home without putting on the mask or pants. This was especially disappointing because I'd seen in-person classes were capped at 12 and had been really been looking forward to having a live teacher again. The instructor didn't ask any of the bare handful of us in person about injuries or who we were, much less check vax cards. I recognize they're doing their best during the pandemic, but I probably would wait to visit if you're looking for any in-person instruction. I'll give them another try down the line. read more

Love HYS! I've been attending classes (on and off) for a few years and they have always been amazing. All of the different classes and instructors are amazing, each with their own unique style so you can find one that's best for you. I've especially enjoyed the virtual classes throughout the pandemic, HYS did a great job of working to remain accessible and affordable through this time. Also, the virtual classes have given me the opportunity to attend classes I would've missed because of the commute or due to a class being full! I've loved nearly all the classes I've taken with many of the instructors but my favorites are (in no particular order :)): - Angela Boswell - HIIT! Not traditional yoga but a great workout, with yoga mindfulness/fundamentals. - Jenna Conner - Elle Randall - Shana Pistonami - Jazmine Tejada - Ewa Szostak All a little different and all amazing. I probably would've listed everyone in the studio if I had tried all the classes :). Lastly - I appreciate HYS' efforts last year in providing a safe space for BIPOC by offering the class with Unearth and Bloom during the height of the summer chaos. I've been going to yoga classes for 30 plus years and have never been locked out. My second time going to the studio I discovered that they lock the door at class time. I'd arrived five minutes late, five minutes mind you, you know how the subway sometimes is, and the door was locked. I knocked a few times before realizing the locked door was their policy. In the few classes I attended the teachers were typical average. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, but if you have a practice, it's fine. It's a small studio, a little grungy, but good natural light. Their late policy is absolutely ridiculous. read more

I came here for their Sound Off yoga event. What fun it was!! It was a Quiet Clubbing with vinaysas. We wore head phones and listened to sounds of waves crashing and relaxing r&b like music. The instructor led the class like any other, voicing the different positions. Listening to the music made the class special. I found myself relaxing more into the positions and thus stretching a bit more than usual. It's no surprise that I felt sore (but a good sore) and extra limber. The studio is small with just 1 room for yoga, a waiting room, and a bathroom. It's very clean. They have yoga mats and the typical yoga props. The instructor was helpful and friendly during the class. She sometimes confused the names of the positions. But she went around and gently corrected our positions when necessary. read more

Warm, welcoming energy. I arrived early to yesterday's community class and was greeted by Dublin. He was chatting with a student about yoga philosophy and asana practice. I chimed in with my comments and both Dublin, as well as the [female] student were receptive and gave off positive energy. Eventually other women showed up, as did Nicole, the soft spoken instructor who would guide our 75min session of connecting with our bodies and sharing our collective energies in the space at HYS. Nicole greeted each of us and comes across as an empathetic and very down to earth young woman. I say "empathetic" because she was aware that a few of the ladies (there were no men in attendance) commented on the heavy heat in the room. During the practice, Nicole's voice soothed and encouraged us as we each went through our versions of our flow. At the end of the practice, I stayed a bit to chat up Nicole (and Lisa). I left feeling so grateful that the universe brought me to HYS, and in particular to have met positive influences in our community. Thank you, Nicole, Lisa and HYS. We will certainly share our energies again soon. :) read more

I did an in person class in Marcus Garvey Park. It was so nice! I missed in person classes so much. It's a beautiful spot and Lucia gave a wonderful class. I actually hope that outdoor yoga keeps up after covid because it was beautiful and so much fun. read more

Harlem Yoga is pretty much the only yoga studio in the area (please correct me if Im wrong!) and even though is generally a nice spot, a few things could be better. I have attended their regular and community yoga classes for almost two years and some of their teachers are really amazing. On the downside, the studio floors are dirty (you find hairs, nails and dust everywhere) and some students are flat out rude and inconsiderate. Today I was forced to move my mat (being the only person in the room) because another student literally parked her mat touching mine because 'that is her spot' Class prices are reasonable. read more

Love this yoga studio! They are very friendly, reasonably priced and start on time! They also offer Pilates, classes for pregnant mothers, and classes with newborns. I have found all the teachers to be very knowledgeable and helpful. The open level classes are great and are usually ninety minutes. They also often offer different types of workshops. read more

I initially visited for the first time for a community yoga class. It is very organized , the scheduling structure is done online as well as any payments and availability. The class was very nice, the instructor new some of the students giving it a community environment. I give this place 4 stars, because when I entered the establishment I wasn't greeted or acknowledged and there were about 3 people out in the front desk. I had to ask about the class because I wasn't guided. read more

The address is correct--the studio is located on 125th between Lenox and 5th Avenue, 3rd floor (on the south side of the street). My partner and I went to this yoga studio for the first time today. We live in Harlem, so the location is convenient, near the 2/3 line and the crosstown buses. We also like to support local businesses, so we were happy to see this new, permanent location open. We were made to feel very welcome. We both have limited experience with yoga, so we found the class challenging but accessible. The instructor gave clear instructions, provided hands-on assistance, and offered modifications for positions we were unable to do. The introductory special, 3 classes for $25, is a great way to get started, but their regular prices are also reasonable and cheaper than many studios in Manhattan. They offer a variety of courses, including pilates and prenatal yoga, throughout the day. My only wish is that they should have a course on Friday evenings around 6:30pm or 7pm. I know the other yoga studio I have attended in Harlem packs them in on Friday evenings, so I think they could fill a Friday night class once more people know about this studio. I highly recommend visiting Harlem Yoga Studio. read more

There is a serious need for more yoga studios in this area so I really do appreciate having Harlem Yoga Studio in the area. The classes provide a great sense of community. I attend the yoga barre class regularly. I would describe my fitness level as average and I have attended other classes at more expensive studios in the past. The barre at HYS is not as challenging but an okay workout for relaxation and an intro to barre in general. The studio could be a lot cleaner. There were plenty of times I stepped in dust balls, toenails (yuck I know), and puddles of what I hope is water and not other ppls sweat (class held right after hot yoga). The instructor is also a bit strange but nice. She says "booty crack" a lot which is interesting. Her playlists are cool though... read more

I wanted to come to a few classes before doing a review so I could really get a feel for the place. I've been looking for a yoga studio that's in my neighborhood (tired of traveling to Midtown for yoga and wanted to support local businesses). I actually found this studio through a Yelp ad and figured I'd give it a try! I got the New Student Special, 3 classes for $25 and I'm glad I did. I've been to other studios where you pay $30 for a month, then I go and don't like it, but feel pressured to go for the rest of the month so I don't waste my money lol. The studio is very warm, welcoming, I've been greeted warmly each time, and the other students are really engaging too and interested in building community. I've only tried Hot Power Hour and the first session I went to was with Veundja. She was INCREDIBLE! She really cared about the students, would offer alternatives to positions, and used hands on instruction (which I really appreciate, I'd rather have someone help me to do it correctly and safely). Towards the end of the class, she also appropriately applied reflexology techniques to my feet, shoulders, etc and it was so relaxing and a great way to end the practice! My next class was with Ally and the pace was a little faster but I love how each class offered different and new poses that I haven't tried before and the instructors are really nurturing. There's no superior yogi feeling or anyone to make you feel bad because you're not at a certain point in your practice. The honor everyone's ability, everyone's effort, and encourage you to try something new. I look forward to calling Harlem Yoga Studio home! read more

First time Yoga person here and decided to try HYS cause my boyfriend has been hounding me to do it for years cause he says I'm a stressed out, hostile woman whose in dire need of help. (Born and raised in NYC whaddya expect.) I read the reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a try. So I went online to their site which was very informative and purchased one class. Yesterday was my first day and I did Yoga Basics, 90 minutes for 14 dollars with an extremely knowledgeable and patient instructor. I'm sure I will be doing Yoga Basics for a couple of months until I get the hang of it anyway. The studio was clean, atmosphere was soothing and the class was small which I liked. I'm sure the size of the class changes from time to time. They also offer blankets, blocks and straps for comfort and reaching if you're a shorter limbed person such as I am. They also sell Yoga mats there if you don't have one. Let me tell you....Yoga was no joke cause I was sweating like a work horse from sun salutations, stretches and poses all the way to the beginning of meditation when I finally started to cool down. After that... I felt elongated, relaxed, surprisingly calm and peaceful by the time class ended even with the annoying jackass who fell asleep and snored during meditation and whose ass crack was staring at me throughout the entire class. I recommend this facility wholeheartedly and look forward to becoming a permanent member:) read more

This was my first time doing Yoga ever in life so I have nothing really to compare this experience to, however I still thought I'd share. As a Harlemite I was excited to check out Harlem Yoga Studio. I went with a friend to "Yoga Basics" Monday at 7:30. The session was an hour and a half long and basically was an introductory session which taught basic poses to help beginners become familiar with the terminologies. Classic, poses, stretches, meditation and some "om's". Pros: Room was very clean, Staff was very helpful and professional, Convenient location, Mat rentals available if you forget yours Cons: No Cons really but for $14 a session, next time I'll probably take advantage of the 3 sessions for $25 package or check Groupon. read more

I would definitely recommend this yoga studio! I've mostly taken their Tuesday 8pm class (Vinysa) and had a solid session each time. I would love to try some of their other classes/ instructors as well. Bottom line, it's convenient for Harlem-dwellers, well-priced (especially if you have a groupon/livingsocial deal) and I love that it's not super crowded like mid/downtown places. read more

I have a very regular yoga practice. Not sure if that makes a difference in this review. Anyhow, my regular studio cancelled but I was in desperate need of a class so I ran over to Harlem Yogo Studio. My first class was a pleasant experience. The teacher knew her stuff, the class was well thought out, and my alignment was adjusted. The only thing that upset me was that the teachers were not regular. When I asked the teacher her schedule there, she couldn't really give me an answer. So I feel like HYS is a place where you get your practice in and leave with out any sort of attachment or sense of community. And that's ok if that's what you are looking for. My second experience was disappointing for me but I tried to keep an open mind and learn from my experience. It was advertised as a Yoga 2 class but felt more like Intro to Yoga as there was plenty of talking and instruction. The teacher was very charming and funny. She was very knowledable and helped my alignment, but for my personal taste, her class did not flow at all. There was no twisting or stretching and it took 35 mins to do 2 sun salutations. Savasana lasted forever. I didn't feel refreshed, relaxed or challenged at the end of class. read more

I purchased a Groupon a few months back ($60 for 20 classes) and I'm sad to say that my Groupon expires soon. The studio is only a 15 minute walk from my house, so needless to say the location is extremely convenient. I respect the array of classes Harlem Yoga Studio offers- from various levels of Vinyasa yoga, to Pilates, to belly dancing. I also respect their accessibility to anyone in the community by offering donation only, pre-natal, parental, and full-figured yoga classes. I've attended several Yoga I and II classes and a Pilates class. The classes are relatively intimate compared to other studios in New York, never attending a class with more than 8 participants, which I greatly enjoy. The instructors are able to give each student individual attention which is important for someone who is trying to improve and deepen their yoga practice. Also, Harlem Yoga Studio consistently integrates a meditation element into all their yoga classes, at least the ones I've attended. While I'm not a particular fan of meditation yoga and more used to a high cardio Vinyasa yoga session, I can't say that I don't appreciate the meditation at the end. In short, highly recommended if you like intimate classes and want a welcoming, non-intimidating environment to explore your yoga practice. read more

I purchased a living social deal for unlimited classes. Most of the reviews were pretty good. I've been to two classes so far and really enjoyed them. The first one was supposed to be a pilates class but the instructor was sick so it ended up being a core yoga class. It was tough but fun. The instructor's personal music collection added a very soothing touch to the atmosphere. The second class I took was yoga basics. It involved a lot of stretching, meditating, and some yoga poses. I loved it. Both classes were very relaxing. I'm looking forward to the pilates class. The studio is cozy and clean. The only thing is I heard someone say that groupon must be working so it's been a little crowded. Or maybe it's the new year and everyone wants to get in shape. So the classes were a little packed. However, it didn't stop me or anyone else from utilizing the room we did have. I really enjoy coming here. read more

It has a sense of community and they pay attention to every individual come through the door. So far I've enjoyed my experience at Harlem Yoga Studio, which is a great addition to the neighborhood. After doing the three classes for $25.00 deal on their website, I signed up for a month of classes and even though I was lax on my attendance last week, this afternoon's Barre class reminded me exactly why this membership is a great investment. Tara, the Barre instructor, is a great motivator for students of all levels, and the class is incredibly fun and rewarding. You WILL sweat (in a good way!) and feel amazing when you leave. I've also done one pilates and one belly dancing class with substitute instructors who were both very patient and helpful, which is important to a beginner like me. I'd like to go back and try those classes with the permanent instructors to see if I enjoy them as much. Overall, this is great, friendly little studio. My only complaint is that the $95.00 a month membership is a little on the steep side for the neighborhood, and I wish they offered more than two Barre classes a week as I'm not much of a yoga person so it would make it more worth the $ for me. read more

Being able to have live classes instead of pre-recorded videos has kept me motivated to take class, and helped me feel less isolated. Harlem Yoga Studio is a wonderful, clean yoga studio in the middle of Harlem. The exterior of the building might not be much to look at -- as next door there is currently construction occurring. But once inside the studio space, it is spacious and clean. I purchased a Groupon deal a few months back, I believe it was 10 classes for $25 or so. I've attended several of their classes including: Yoga Basics, Yoga I, Community and Vinyasa. Every class I have attended has been small, with no more than 10 participants. I've been to other yoga studios downtown that literally squeeze as many people as possible. So it is nice to have breathing space and room to move into different positions, without worrying about hitting the person next to you. I recently received an e-mail from the studio, indicating they have purchased additional space within their current location. Hopefully this will allow for additional classes and a lounge area. Basically, all the instructors are wonderful and very approachable. If this is your first yoga class, you have not participated in yoga for some time or you are a Yogi -- I would highly recommend Harlem Yoga Studio. Might I add the prices are definitely affordable, especially compared to most yoga studios downtown. read more

Dublin's instructions were clear; he offered a class that had a great balance - challenging, fun, welcoming. I enjoyed it a lot and plan to take it every Monday. I'd long done yoga (occassionally) at Integral in Chelsea; during the pandemic I've been doing an online Iyengar class. I wanted to find a vinyasa class to balance that out, and tried a few different classes (recommended by friends) but was not happy. Then I found Dublin's class! read more

This is a great studio with knowledgable, friendly, professional instructors. I love the wide range of classes (there are some as late as 8:45pm!) The prices are great too. My only complaints are that several of the classes have started 5 minutes late, and the building has clumps of hair all over the floor and stairs thanks to a barber shop on the 2nd floor... Also, there is no elevator so be ready to walk up two flights! Overall a friendly and affordable studio. read more

harlem yoga studio offers a variety of classes throughout the day including vinyasa, pilates and a vinyasa dance class. the rooms are small, simple and clean and the instructors ensure students are doing poses properly (this is incredibly important to new yogis in order to avoid injury). on a more general note, harlem yoga studio seems to attract really friendly instructors and students, this is a great perk for those of us who are trying to meet new people! read more

I love Harlem Yoga Studio. I've been taking yoga on and off for years now and have had many different instructors but am not advanced. At Harlem Yoga Studio Laura and Erica put a great emphasis on the fitness component of yoga and not just what the correct pose is, but how anyone at any level can achieve the pose and get the benefits, not just sweat pointlessly twisting and bending. The price is very reasonable and most classes are an hour and a half, which allows for plenty of stretching, warming up, and cooling down. read more

I've been going to Harlem Yoga Studio for a little over a year. The atmosphere is great and the teachers are friendly and excellent at what they do. I particularly love Laurel's Yoga Tone class and Nelly's class. I would highly recommend to anyone. They're very attentive to the students. I always walk away seeing instant results in my body and with my spirit feeling replenished. Thanks for bringing such a great, affordable, establishment to Harlem. Kudos Harlem Yoga!! read more
