This is a cute, unassuming restaurant. Although it's on a busy street, it was pretty quiet on a Saturday evening. They have three outdoor tables and a bar in the front of the restaurant. The owners are Peruvian. To drink, I had the house red sangria. I loved that you could specify sweet, semi-sweet, or tart. I went for semi-sweet. It was nice and fruity and you could taste the wine. My husband enjoyed the strawberry pineapple wine punch, which had a bold pineapple flavor. They have several vegan entrees. I got the vegan chaufa with tofu. It was full of veggies and the fried rice was rich and well prepared. The tofu was nice and firm. I asked for hot sauce and they provided a red and a green option. The latter had cream in it. Our waitress warned that the red was quite spicy. It did have a kick, but it wasn't crazy and gave the dish the added flavor I was looking for. Just the other day I was craving Peruvian food, today I was walking around in Harlem and looked to my right and that's how I stumbled upon this place. Don't be turned away by the name! Now if you are anything like me, you understand how important it is to enjoy food that is fresh. I rather a plate of food that is extremely fresh over the taste & how well seasoned the food is, thankfully, here I got to enjoy both! I was worried about the fish. To many times have I had fish that was under seasoned. This fish was amazing. It was soft, seasoned well, had a lot of meat and I'm extra happy I didn't swallow (or shall I say choke) on a bone like I am prone to doing lol The fish dish was served with fried plantains and a side of some type of coconut sauce. I didn't think it would pair well together, I didn't really even think that I needed it at all. But, I took the plantain, put some fish on there and poured the coconut sauce over it and boy, I am so happy I had this meal today. It was fresh, well balanced, and light. Fortunately, there were enough plantains to fish ratio, even if it doesn't seem so in the pics. To this point, my partner had the lomo saltado, and he is not a man to ever choose red meat (it's a beef dish) after he was done he was like "wow, isn't it weird that this doesn't feel heavy at all". I took some of his food and can attest to this also! I walked in really really wanting the ceviche, cuz how do you go into a Peruvian establishment and not opt for that lol? There were three things on the menu I was in between and I am satisfied with the dish I had. On the table, there is a little menu that says you get a free dessert for writing a review on Yelp or Google. I didn't tell the owner I would write a review. He saw me taking pictures and I assume he knew exactly what I would be doing when I left. I thought it was a matter of doing the review and getting the dessert perhaps on your next visit, or doing the review before you leave. Which, I did neither. It was nice of him to bring the dessert. It's a passion fruit cream brûlée, which I have never heard of before or had. The passionfruit is prominent, but not sour at all. I had no clue what exactly I was eating beforehand, but knew just on the flavor alone. It was sweet, soft and light. Ohh, honorable mention- the chica morada (between me and you, I might've have two cups) something I NEVER do lol. I'm a sucker for corn, purple corn at that, and anything that is specifically cultural to a place, that you can't just get anywhere. It's refreshing, tasty, and not too sweet. Would recommend this spot! I look forward to going back and trying other dishes on the menu. read more

Discovered this cute Peruvian restaurant located in Harlem, so came here with a friend for dinner. The space was colorful and comfortable, with a cozy atmosphere. I ordered the Salmon and Shrimp in saffron butter sauce, served with orange rice. This was delicious! The Salmon had a slight crisp to it, and was delightfully tender, as well as flaky. Shrimp was succulent and nicely juicy. The savory sauce was well seasoned with plenty of yummy saffron flavor. Rice was perfectly cooked and tasty as well. For dessert, I wanted to try the Sponge Cake with Lucuma ice cream. This was different than I expected and the ice cream I was served was vanilla. When I inquired about it, I was informed that they did not have Lucuma ice cream. I would have preferred it if they let me know upon ordering, because I would not have gotten it. Service was good. Our waitress was friendly and everything came out in a timely manner. Prices were reasonable overall. I would consider returning to try the Pasta with Steak and Tostones. read more

This Peruvian restaurant is known for its seafood, but their meat and rice dishes are equally stellar. This was my first visit to Harlemite, and everything was exquisite -- from making the reservation to the food and the service. Our waiter was very friendly and gave helpful recommendations on what to order. My pollo a la brasa (rotisserie chicken) came with rice or fries and salad, but I requested to substitute the rice/fries with tostones, and they happily accommodated at no extra charge. The meal was affordable and super flavorful -- no one does rotisserie chicken like Peruvians! And that's coming from a non-Peruvian. My friends ordered lomo saltado and shrimp chaufa (fried rice). The lomo saltado was a bit heavy on cumin, but the portion was generous and otherwise well seasoned. I'd definitely come back here. I do wish they were on OpenTable or Resy since I had to message them on Instagram to make the reservation, but fortunately they're responsive. Now to get that free dessert! read more

I enjoyed the arroz chaufa de pollo (for the second time here). There was a generous portion of seasoned fried rice, with tender chicken, chopped scrambled eggs, and tasty veggies. I also liked the papa rellena, ground beef inside of a potato ball that was lightly crispy outside and soft inside. I tried a bit of my friend's pescado a la chorrillana, which also tasted very good. The place is clean and the workers are attentive. I got my food to go. I ordered the combo with chicken, salad, rice, and fries. Unfortunately, the flavor was not there. The rice was bland and tasted mostly of sesame oil, and the chicken lacked that Peruvian flavor--sigh. The green sauce had no taste. It just wasn't what I'm used to when I eat Peruvian food. On my list of neighborhood go-tos! Can't go wrong with Harlemite. Love having a Peruvian option on the row, and delicious at that. We went during their soft opening a couple of years ago. They were just sort of playing around with the menu, but even then it was good. I don't think any of those menu options survived, unfortunately. Among them were lollipop chicken and I believe a version of mofongo. I don't know what took us this long to return, but I could kick myself for missing out! We suggested it to our friends who were visiting from Columbus OH and we all agreed it was a great choice. Clean plate stickers all around! Service was poor from the moment we walked in. The restaurant was full, and despite having reservations, our server couldn't find them. It didn't end up affecting where we sat, but it wasn't a great start. From there, the experience only got worse. The waiter mumbled constantly, making communication difficult, and spent the entire meal rushing us. We were repeatedly made to feel like we needed to hurry, and before we had even finished our drinks, we were handed to-go cups because they wanted to close. There's a difference between closing for the night and making paying customers feel like an inconvenience. The food was good, but the service completely overshadowed it. We went with a traditional Pervuian dish as an appetizer and got the salmon dish as our mains. All of it was amazing that I would definitely order this again. For food, I ordered the lomo saltado which was decent overall. The French fries were cold and unsalted while the meat/veggies seemed to need a bit more salt. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted. I ending having the fried fish with onion salad and a side order of green beans. I thought the breading on the fish was too heavy for my taste but it was ok in taste. My friend ate salmon and shrimp in butter sauce with rice, she liked hers. She also had crème brûlée which was excellent. I had a glass of Merlot. The waitress was friendly and started out efficiently but as the place filled up she almost disappeared. I would like to go back to try more things but unfortunately I can't eat carbs and that eliminates pasta and rice but I will try the seafood soup and the salmon in the future.
