Flor de Mayo Wonderful Boliche Mechado (Cuban Pot Roast) in a flavorful chorizo sauce

Had an enjoyable Sunday dinner at Flor de Mayo with two old friends visiting. We needed a UWS spot to eat and I'd been eyeing Boliche Mechado (Cuban Pot Roast) on this location's Lunch Special menu for a while, but never made it over during the week. We were promptly seated in a booth in the back, a good spot for reconnecting. Literally, we could quickly break bread together - a fresh crusty sliced baguette brought promptly to the table. One of my friends ordered a bowl of Wonton Soup. We each selected different entrees: Pollo a la Brasa, their signature Peruvian rotisserie chicken, with Fried Rice; Lomo Chicken; and myself finally trying out their Boliche Mechado with Green (Cilantro) Rice. After the nice soup, our large platters came promptly. The rotisserie chicken also included some small salad and dipping sauce. The Lomo Chicken, stir-fried with tomato and onions, came with both Fries and Fried Rice. My wonderful Boliche Mechado was in a flavorful chorizo sauce that complemented well with my sizable portion of tasty Green Rice, served on the side. It was an awesome "Old School" setting to reconnect, never having to shout over music like many contemporary restaurants with filling, delicious food. Definitely, I anticipate making it back to this Flor de Mayo, perhaps eventually for one of those Lunch Specials!

TLDR: If you've never had Chino Latino - you're depriving yourself of some crazy good stuff. Large portions, even larger flavors. Broiled pork chop, lomo saltado, squid ink fried rice, seco de res. You're welcome. I've been eating at the Amsterdam location for years but recently I've been coming to this one. It's a family run spot with a full Chino Latino menu. Think a collision of Chinese and Peruvian/Spanish. They've got some straight up Spanish things, totally Chinese and in between. For starters, definitely try the papa arequipena. It's a Peruvian potato either cold or fried with this red pepper sauce and hard boiled eggs and olives. It's a very unique flavor. If you're there on the weekends, grab the shrimp stew. It's an ultra tasty shrimp soup with rice, corn, a bit of spice. The broiled pork chops are probably my favorite pork chops anywhere. They're brined incredibly well are dotted with chopped garlic that caramelizes under the flame. It's so insanely juicy. Squid ink fried rice is a must. It's a squid ink coated fried rice with ham, shrimp, pease and a unique ginger flavor. The lomo saltado you definitely need to get. Sliced steak in a stir-fried sauce with onions, tomato and french fries on top of rice. The other items I'd recommend are the seco de res, a cilantro-centric tender beef stew. The tallarin verde is a Peruvianish pesto pasta, it's great with the garlic shrimp. No matter how much good stuff I've eaten, Flor de Mayo is in my list of restaurants I love going to and bringing visitors to. It's something that's tough to find but it's a testament to the melting pot that NYC is.

Never had Chinese Peruvian food before so was very intrigued. Came on a weekday night and was surprised that the store was packed. Was able to get seated quickly and they allowed us (2 people) to sit at a 4 person table which was very nice of them. - Complimentary Bread - I don't know what they put in this bread, but I was a huge fan. The bread was so soft and hot... and with the butter, it was just perfection. I also loved the crust as it was very flaky and crisp. I could just eat this as a whole meal and be happy. - Lomo Saltado (Beef) - I was not a big fan of the fried rice on the side but this was one of the best Lomo Saltado I've had in the city. The tomatoes and onions were cooked to perfection as they were very soft and packed with flavor. The fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The beef was also very tender but crispy at the same time. - Chinese Style Squid Fried Rice - Not a big fan. Feel like there was a strong oily after-taste like the fried rice in the Lomo Saltado. I did appreciate how many ingredients there were, but it didn't feel very appetizing. Overall, would just recommend the bread and the Lomo Saltado if you do come here. Also, I have to say that it's refreshing to watch all the servers play around, it made me very happy to know that they all are great friends with one another.

The service was great. They never let us have an empty cup of water which I appreciated a lot and were friendly. In terms of food, the portion was amazing for the price (lunch specials). The chicken was my favorite. They kept the chicken so tender and juicy. Of course, the flavors were there too. The shredded beef was good, but I am not a huge fan to tomato base. Nothing wrong with the dish, just personal preference

Flor de Mayo is the one restaurant I always have to visit when I come back home. It's incredibly nostalgic for me, as I grew up eating here, and the food never disappoints. While prices have gone up over the years, the quality has remained consistent. My go-to dish is the Lomo Saltado with the house special fried rice. The shrimp in red sauce or the broiled fish with garlic and lemon are also fantastic choices. I'm not a fan of the Nutcracker, though it's very popular with others. I always pair my meal with a Tsingtao beer. The service is always great, and both locations offer the same quality food and hospitality. I just love this place!

If you want some authentic Peruvian/Chinese food please go to "Flor de mayo". The staff are very friendly and attentive. The ambiance is a relaxed quiet environment. The food is to die for !!! I had the garlic shrimp, shrimp lomein and Lomo salteado!! Portions are big and the food is delicious! The sangria is fresh and strong!

If you haven't been to Flor de Mayo yet, you're sorely overdue. Lomo Saltado, pork chops, and the roast chicken accompanied by the house fried rice cannot be beat. It's not a fancy place and certainly not where you impress colleagues. However, it is a darn good place to fill your belly and still have leftovers for the next day. The staff is diverse and so are their English skills. But they are helpful and eager to bring your hearts desire in food and liquid form. Their drinks are pretty phenomenal and strong. The sangria is a nice midpoint but their natural, non-alcoholic juices are a good option as well. Good eats. Downsides: not much fare for vegetarian/vegan folks, only 2 tiny bathrooms that can use some work and attention, if you have to wait to get a table stick close to the host or risk getting skipped. They take most forms of payment but cash is appreciated here.

The first thing placed on the table was their famous aji verde, the vibrant green sauce. I couldn't resist dipping my fork in for a taste--spicy, fresh, and absolutely addictive. We ordered a spread that truly showcased the menu: Mama Juanita's rotisserie chicken, perfectly seasoned and juicy; corvina; and a ceviche mixto loaded with shrimp, octopus, calamari, red onions, cilantro, rocoto pepper, and lime juice. It was so refreshing and flavorful that I found myself spooning up every last drop of the citrusy marinade. The lomo saltado was another standout--a savory Peruvian stir-fry with marinated strips of beef, served alongside crispy fries. We also added a side of maduros, their sweetness balancing the meal beautifully. The ambiance was casual, comfortable, and simple, with unique walls decorated in intertwined tree branches that added a rustic touch. The service matched the food--our waiter, the busboy, and the manager were all attentive, engaging, and genuinely friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. Dessert was Tres Leches Cake. One bite in, and it basically melts in your mouth- no chewing required. It's sweet, soggy and by the end, you're not sure if you ate cake... or drank it--but either way, no regrets. Overall, it was a memorable meal full of bold flavors, great company, and warm hospitality.

Mama bear got a Spanish chaufa which is basically the Peruvian version of fried rice. She seemed to enjoy it. I also got a side of squash soup which was pretty good. We washed it all down with Jarritos, the Mexican soda. Solid choice. Now the restroom situation. Chirp does not have a public restroom. My mom was bothered by that and I could see her starting to make it a thing. I had to nip that in the bud. I get it, I understand, but that is not the hill I die on. No restroom, no worries.
