I've never had a professional massage, but I have had massages by friends and family before and without a doubt friends and family gave far superior massages. I basically spent an hour getting cream rubbed into my skin, but my muscles very rarely felt like they were being touched let alone kneaded - at times I barely even felt like my skin was being touched (particularly with the head and face massage). I can give myself a better face massage than that! It was beyond gentle - it was merely touching, and that was the maximum contact for almost all of the massage. I wrote on my sheet that I was "not sure" if I preferred deep, medium, or gentle because it was my first professional massage - she said she would check in with my frequently since it was my first time. I assumed she would do this (given that she repeatedly said she would before we started). I assumed she would ask whether it was the right pressure or the right spots, given that every body is different presumably it's important to communicate at least a little bit with your customer to ensure they're receiving the desired massage. But the only time she spoke was when she asked me to turn from my back onto my stomach. I do NOT make a lot of money as a grad student, I frankly skip meals fairly regularly to save money, but I've been going through a really rough period recently so I decided to indulge in a professional massage. I left that place feeling more tense because I'm now out $90, which is far from insignificant for me. It's not in my character to demand money back but if I wasn't so emotionally drained right now I think I would have been more affirmative. I can't speak about all of the masseuses at Harmony on Hope; their may be some good ones. I had Ashley. Perhaps some people find her "massages" good (she has positive reviews on yelp, which is why I chose her), but I wanted a real massage, i.e., to actually have my muscles kneaded not just cream rubbed into my skin with my muscles practically ignored. Perhaps she is good at deeper massages too but she didn't provide an atmosphere that made me feel comfortable asking her to go deeper, given that she said she'd check in and then did not. I also explicitly stated that I wanted my lower back massaged unless we found I was too ticklish there (that is my ticklish spot); she never touched my lower back at all. Absolute waste of money, and if I ever go back, which I likely won't, I would ask for a different masseuse. read more

My mother, sister and I each enjoyed the Juan-Knead-A massage, which focuses on the neck and shoulders and finishes with a refreshing back scrub, on Mother's Day. The staff is warm and welcoming and the setting is peaceful and relaxing. This review is long overdue! I have been seeing Melodie for the Weight of the World massage for the past few months and HIGHLY recommend her services. Her massages are hands down the best I have ever experienced. Not only does she take the time to remember your problem areas, but also you as a person so you can feel your best. Came here again the day after an 8 hour flight and they make me feel brand new, I have a lot of sciatic issues and every time I come here they pay special attention to it and work out all my knots with the pressure I enjoy! This was only my first experience at a place that specializes in only massage, but not my first massage (I've had a lot of bodywork done in physical therapy type settings over the years). While I wasn't on a mission for relaxation, I found the space to be surprisingly soothing. The waiting area is small which made me a bit nervous on first impression, but once the door opened to the the massage room itself I was pleased to see open spaces with high ceilings and a skylight and tasteful decor. There was some music playing, which I didn't recognize (which is good) and it worked with the ambiance. Shannon, the owner, asked me lots of questions about previous injuries and treatments I'd had in the past before we got to work. She listened intently as I spoke, and asked lots of questions to clarify what I was saying, which is a nice change of pace from many medical professionals I'd been dealing with. The massage itself was relaxing. We chatted a bit at times, but only when it wasn't distracting to me or distracting to her. She checked in about pressure as she moved to different areas, but she didn't need my guidance in finding where the problems were (which was nice, and important to me - it meant she was paying attention when we talked and is able to feel the situation with her hands) What struck me the most, though, was her use of caution when things weren't feeling right. I've had trouble with neck massages in the past - I tend to end up more sore after than I was before. Other MTs (again, in PT settings) have just had me push through because "things need to be released", and I've had to spend the next couple days resting to recover. Shannon recognized that I was uncomfortable and tried other techniques and eventually decided the neck situation was better left for another visit. (You may have gathered that I have a series of complex injuries - her inability to fix this particular one on a particular visit is not a flaw in my opinion, but more of a plus since she knows when to stop so as not to cause further injury. I really appreciate that!) I saw her once in 2012, and twice in July of 2013. After the second visit in July, I have had almost a complete reduction in bicep tendinitis (I've had to ice it maybe 3 times since...which is amazing because I was icing it constantly previously). I expect to return a few more times before 2013 ends. read more

Tammy is amazing! I went to Harmony on Hope for the first time today. I typically get 5 or 6 massages per year and don't have a "favorite" place I go...at least until now. I made a reservation earlier this week using the easy online scheduling website. I've had a particularly stiff neck and sore shoulders for a few weeks. I haven't had a massage in years and considering my job is hard on my body I figured it was time! This was my first time here. My massage therapist was Jenn she was very kind and friendly and spoke with me about any areas I was having issues with and checked in with me during the massage to make sure the pressure was comfortable for me. The music was great (I'm not a fan of strange generic zen sounds) more of a soft acoustic instrumental mix. The massage itself was fantastic. I have some deep knots so that was a little work and it was one of those where it kind of hurts in a really good way.
