I recently got into a conversation of not having any great pastrami sandwich in Portland, and a friend said that I must try Baker's Mark. Arrived on a Sunday afternoon at 1pm, the patio seats were full but there were some open seats inside. There were just two people ordering at the kiosk, so it was a short wait to order, with about 10 minutes to get the sandwich. The Dutch crunch roll, wow, wow, just amazing texture and full of flavor, the pastrami was solid but not mind blowing, but the combination (cheese, pickles and deli mustard) made this an easy 9.5/10. They flipped the sign by about 1:30pm and said they were sold out. I'll be back to try some other sandwiches, and I'll be sure to arrive early enough. read more

I enjoyed the Avo-Chickpea. Unfortunately, they were out of garlic Dutch Crunch bread. If it's that popular why not make more? Good size, but far from value. The sandwich style is reminiscent of what you'd find at a good deli: piled high, dressings, shredded lettuce, etc. Typical inner Portland: stand in line and touch pad to order, PREtip, bus your own stuff. Based on a friend's recommendation we stopped here on the way back to Seattle. Dutch Crunch? Yes please!!! Not many places make these in Seattle. Anything on these rolls would be delicious. One of the first customers in the door, we stepped right up to the ordering kiosk to place our orders and they were ready in about 10 minutes. Secured the goods in our cooler for the road trip and 3 hours later, I was able to wolf down half of this beauty. Wrapped the other half in saran and it was still good the next day. First time and not my last! The pastrami was sliced thin with great flavor! My first time trying Dutch crunch bread and it was both soft, chewy, and a great crust. I do think it could have used a bit of brightness to balance the sandwich. The roast beef was flavorful and the horseradish mustard was perfect. It added a nice brightness to cut through the rich au jus. The seating is limited indoors, but there are a few tables outside. Excellent! My bride and I stopped by after church to get sandwiches before heading on the road. Very easy ordering process with the kiosk allowing you to full customize your selections. Staff was super helpful in assisting. This place was mentioned by locals when I was visiting, stating they even run out of the Dutch Crunch bread, so go early. That right there made me want to go. Tiny parking lot and limited street parking, but we found a spot. I went with the hot T.B.L.T and it did not disappoint! I went without the red wine vinegar and oil, because I knew I would take 1/2 home, but I can only imagine that makes it better. Next time, I will get it on the side and drizzle as I eat. My loss. My companion went with the French Dip and loved it! Small seating area and no real interaction with the staff. You order/pay at a kiosk, they just call out your name. Trying again after many years. I am just not a fan of dutch crust bread and I think last time I tried it out. Just a personal preference. Nice to see they had a french bread option. My husband enjoyed his salad but thought the choice of protein on the salads was too limited. Tuna, salami, basic turkey or garbanzo beans. Asked after we ate and they said next time we can ask but they will charge more as the other meats cost more. I think they could still add the option and just show it costs more. I enjoyed the warm ham and provolone sandwich on french. Usually provolone is so bland but it was pretty good melted. Very popular and a big line after noon. Reasonable prices but Boars Head meats so not high end either. I did have the special Snickerdoodle and was very happy. Two typical types of Snickerdoodle cookies (one of my favorite cookies). Sold out at 12:30pm on a Sunday! A friend recommended The Baker's Mark and we went in blindly. After eating here, you can tell that this place is known for their bread, specifically their Dutch Crunch bread. We ordered a Hot Pastrami Sandwich (Provolone, no mayo, spicy brown mustard) and the Godfather (added Genoa Salami, no mayo, all the veggies, hot peppers, red wine vinegar); both were served on their signature Dutch Crunch bread, as they were sold out of all other breads. Both sandwiches were solid, I will say that I actually preferred the Hot Pastrami over the Godfather- and I am not a pastrami girly. I think the fact that it was warm really brought the bread to life and made it that much more tasty- nice crunch, melty cheese, and sour pickles! We ordered a fermented sour pickle on the side, which really hit the spot, but was $3 for a very small pickle- a bit overpriced in my opinion. Otherwise, the sandwiches' price point were both excellent for what you got- these days a value is as much on my mind as how good something tastes when I'm seeking out a spot to eat. We sat out on the patio, which was very windy and cold- adding some of those outdoor overhead heaters would have made the seating much more enjoyable. You have to bus your tables after you eat, which is pretty typical nowadays- I was happy to find a clean table and not have to bus beforehand. My final thoughts are that I would definitely recommend The Baker's Mark to eat at to someone seeking a sandwich, but I personally wouldn't frequent this spot. There are so many Deli's to choose from, and the bread isn't enough for me to choose this spot over another. I am curious to try their Spicy Dutch Crunch bread (which they were sold out of by the time we got there), so I'll definitely be back for Round 2. I first tried Dutch crunch bread in SF Bay Area and immediately became obsessed. Dutch crunch is really common out there, but almost impossible to find here in PDX. So you can imagine how excited I was to find it here at Baker's Mark. I've heard about their Dutch crunch for years now but finally had a chance to try it out. When you step in, the smell of yeasty fresh baked bread is amazing!!! Came in on a Friday right at 11, and I was probably the second physical customer. But I saw them working hard cranking out online orders already. By the time I finished my sandwich the place was packed!!! From what I could see, their cold cuts are all boar's head. I got the godfather with all the works and on Dutch crunch bread of course. I personally give it a 3.5-4/5. It's a solid choice, don't get me wrong. The sandwich was packed, but I felt like it was a bit small for the price point at $14. The Dutch crunch was good, had a nice chew but the topping is not as sweet as I am used to. However, without any other options for Dutch crunch around, it scratches the itch until I can find myself back in the bay. Definitely worth a try if you have never had Dutch crunch before!!! As a child growing up in the Peninsula portion of the Bay Area, I'd go to Woodside Deli on Woodside Road for The Godfather, the Italian sandwich of your dreams. Even if you didn't go here, you likely ate a bomb Bay sandwich that you never forgot, sometimes with Dutch Crunch bread, which was actually invented in the Bay Area. Lots of places, to this day, outside of the Bay don't carry this type of bread for sandwiches, and it makes for a miserable sandwich experience, with your palate dying of boredom. No longer. The Baker's Mark is churning out Bay style chronic Sammie's that have all the flavor but none of those lines that you'd see at Little Lucca's. Order is through the touch screen and you modify it to your liking. Took my Godfather to another level with pepper jack, spicy mustard and spicy lettuce mix. ON DUTCH CRUNCH! Every bite made me feel like I was in South City or El Camino San Mateo, each bite compelling and thrilling. I am a changed man. Unfortunately, the last few times we had sandwiches here, you can really tell the meat cuts are of poor quality...I was told they may be using Boar's Head meats, which you to be the best one you can get maybe 30 years ago! We tried the Ham, Roast Beef, Turkey and Pastrami sandwich on their Dutch Crunch bread. Even though the bread is to die for! The meat cuts have ruined it for us! The veggie sandwich just doesn't cut it for me either. With that said, I contacted the company and asked them toe consider using a better brand, such as Olympia Provisions (local company). Which is one of my favorites and they would be supporting locals! However, there are many other brands that are way better than Boar's Head meats! I got the TBLT and it was decent. Nothing mind blowing. I felt like in general, the food tasted underseasoned? Also it's super expensive. Two sandwiches, one bag of chips and two drinks was $40. Ridiculous for a sandwich spot. Also, we came in at 1pm and they were on their last Dutch crunch roll. Felt like they were underprepared for a Sunday. Service isn't really that nice or attentive. My favorite spot in town for sandwiches. Highly recommend grabbing the dutch bread. As of right now, they offer spicy dutch bread as a limited seasonal item. My go to is the Godfather sandwich. Expect to pay $14 for the sandwich here which is getting to be on the more pricy side but I think it's worth it. Some of the sandwiches/bread does sell out if you order for pick up later in the day. Highly recommend ordering for pick up as early as possible. I ordered a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie here and it ended up being a hard cookie as if it was left out for several days.
