Alturas was a half-way point for us on our road trip - and we wanted to stretch our legs and get something for lunch. We popped into Harold's Frosty because of all the cars we saw outside - figuring it must be good. And we were not disappointed. We had to wait a little bit for our food, but only because there was a line ahead of us and they cook up burgers, fresh with each order. They were so busy (hey it was Labor Day) that they actually ran out of regular fries and ice cream. So we ordered up their cheeseburger and onion rings - which were delicious. WOW! Great find in Alturas, CA. This is a retro looking shake and hamburger place on the north end of town on the Main Street. The food is not cheap but worth every penny. We got a large fry to share which is made from fresh local potatoes. A veggie burger for the wife :) and a proper double cheeseburger for me. I've lived in Alturas for most of my life and Harold's Frosty is a fixture here. The place hasn't changed or evolved much from the mid 90s but that's not exactly a bad thing considering this is a retro style burger joint. Let me start with the good. The burgers, chicken strips, fries and onion rings are the best in town. They're always bursting with flavor and perfectly composed. The fries are crispy and amazing as are the onion rings. The staff and owner are super friendly and always make you feel welcome. The first problem is that they use bread and butter pickles instead of the standard dill ones. It's very off-putting and unexpected. Bread and butter pickles have no business being anywhere near a hamburger. Secondly the prices are pretty steep. A standard meal for two will often cost $30+. This is a super place. We came in needing a burger but with low expectations. Boy were we surprised! The chocolate shakes were great and the fries are outstanding. I ordered a double burger with bacon, avocado and peter jack cheese and my mind was blown. It has to have been one of the best burgers I have ever had. The secret is the grilled beef patties. I don't know what they do, but they should keep doing it and anyone passing through Alturas should run to this spot. read more

The bathroom is beautiful and clean, but there is only one. It was perfect to lift the blues of the long drive. The entire thing cost about $64, for four people. We had to wait a little bit because it seemed there was only one person working behind the counter, and they were doing everything, but to do it all, keep it tasting great, (didn't expect the burger to be THAT good, or the shake..) Talk about a good burger. It took a while but that helped me know it was really homemade. Cooked on a flat top- like your typical 50's diner would have had it. Fries were crispy which was nice as well. While my whole meal was rather expensive for a burger, fries and a shake I did feel like it was worth it. I had the oreo shake- which was creamy and lots of oreo cookies inside. The guy behind me got the super burrito and holy crap- that thing was huge!
