Oh boy. There aren't many people in Alturas, so I'm glad they have a taco restaurant, more cows than people in Modoc county. Not many non-white people up here in Trump country either, so lucky to have Mexican food. But the gentleman at the counter stayed on his cell phone working out financial problems, ignoring us for a few minutes, and then taking orders while he was still talking on the phone the whole time. Mexican food doesn't get any more authentic than Rubio's Tacos. Driving from Sunriver, Oregon back home to Reno - we stopped after a few hours on the road to try the shrimp tacos that we had heard about. The woman at the counter spoke good English and also, spoke a little Spanish to me. We placed our order and man, were those tacos ever good. The shrimp were plump and juicy and I really loved the sauce that came on them. A steady stream of customers came in for their take-out. These tacos are absolutely BOMB. I could eat this food every day. It's an absolute tragedy that I'm just passing through town. We stopped at Rubio's Taqueria entirely for the off-street parking and the good vantage point to take pictures of the mission-style BPOE Lodge across the street. They have middle-of-the-road ratings on Yelp and Google, and being from the chili capital of the world, we tend not to stop in any other area for anything calling itself Mexican, Tex-Mex, or Southwestern cuisine. We were pleasantly surprised, however, by the breakfast burrito and street tacos at Rubio's. I don't think of California as adding enough spice to anything, but the carne asada in our breakfast burrito was rich enough in flavor that I didn't miss the capsaicin bite, and the pollo and pastor street tacos each packed a pleasant kick with well-blended flavors. The place is definitely small. Not a lot of seating. Limited drink selection but had the basics. Ordered 4 street tacos. They were good.

I read in the reviews authentic Mexican food an was so looking forward to it. I got the carne asada nachos for my mom and I to munch on for are drive. So disappointed, the chips were store bought, "guacamole" was Herdez avocado salsa(literally saw the stock of bottles and it poured on), cheese wasn't melted just shredded cheese cold on top. The carne asada had good flavor but was really fatty. If you are traveling north hold off and check out the Mexican food place in Tulelake....you won't regret it. read more

The place its self might need work...a lot lol jk but the food is amazing and the staff are what defines customer service! The food is a great price for what you get!
