This is a solid, small, local theater, no bells and whistles. If you're a student with ID, tickets are only $8 and on Tuesdays they have a $5 movie special! And they have a $5 snack pack - popcorn, packet of candy and a small soda! Can't beat those deals. They do sometimes have problems with screens - we had to move theaters when the movie mysteriously didn't start 20 minutes into showtime. But the problem was solved! I actually like going to the movies here way more than going to the ICON, for more of a homey experience. read more

I really want to like this place, but the last few times I have been here have been somewhat disappointing. It seems like there is no structure and the theater is poorly managed. The employees are always nice and helpful, though. I took my siblings to see Sing. It was the day after Christmas and there was a line out the door and a huge line inside for the concessions. It looked like they were incredibly under-staffed. It took about 20 min. in line to get tickets. After we got in, I told my siblings to find seats and wait for me, since I was sure the movie was about to start or had already started. After another 15 min. in line, I finally got the popcorn and drinks and made my way to the showing. To my surprise, the movie hadn't even started yet. The movie was now 30 min. late and people were getting upset. A customer had to notify the manager that the movie hadn't started. After a few minutes, the movie finally started. Also, on a separate visit on a Friday night, none of the 8(?) stalls in the women's bathroom had toilet paper. I give it 2 stars, because it's never been a GREAT experience. This is a good place to go if you don't really have anything else to do for the day and just really want to see a movie. If you want a great theatre experience, take a trip downtown and go see a movie there. Will I return? Yeah, probably. Only because it's so close to where I live. With adequate planning this is a really cool movie theatre. It's more of a niche theatre, they only show a few movies at a time with a handful of showtimes. The location is right in the mix of downtown Hyde park so, you can very make a day out of frolicking around the area and then catching a movie. I had to come back and snatch a star because... I paid for a ticket to a 3D film, and the film was not properly calibrated before it started (which I understood was supposed to happen before the start time, so what were they [not] doing in the screen room?) so everyone missed the first few minutes of the film. There were a lot of grumbles and complaints in the theater until they fixed it, and nothing was offered for the error, not even an apology. Not good business. read more

So apparently, when you buy tickets online for movies at The Harper Theater your seats are not guaranteed. -______- 6/14 I purchased 3 tickets online for the Father's day (6/16) 12:45pm viewing of Man of Steel at The Harper Theater. On 6/16 we got to the theater at 12:30 and are told that we can not be seated because the theater is full. I explain to them that I bought my tickets 2 days ago. They say, (actual quote) "It's first come, first serve." Say what?!?! Am I at the airport?!? WTH are you talking about? Nowhere on the website, before, during, or after purchase does it say that there is a risk of not being able to see the movie you purchase tickets for because entry is on a "First come, first serve" basis. I could understand if this was a free showing, but I paid for my tickets. They made no effort to keep my business. If they would've guaranteed our seating for a later viewing and thrown in some snacks, we would've been okay with that. I would still tell them their policy sucks, but i would've appreciated an effort to correct the outcome of their flawed policy. So I had never heard of this theater until it popped up on Groupon and with the deal of 20 dollars for two admissions, a thing of candy (2 preselected choices) of candy you wouldn't normally buy or pick at the theater but how can you complain when it is apart of the deal. You also get two popcorns, two nachos(you can even mix it up) one popcorn and one nachos and two medium sodas. Side note nachos are smaller than their regular size. The popcorn and nachos tasted very fresh. The theater is smaller than AMC OR Cineplex theater, but that is the charm of the place. It is very clean and the staff is very friendly. I don't like the whole pick your seat craze because for me I dont know where I want to sit until I see the inside of the theater and you can't tell that from a computer screen. I also like the surround sound and the comfy seats but for some reason the sits go on a decline to an incline to a decline again. FYI they do check your ticket stubs to make sure you are in the correct seat even if the movie theater isn't full. Now about their restroom. I'm tall and I have never seen a toilet as low to the ground as theirs was for sure. I don't know what they were thinking because my knees shouldn't be in my chest(sorry if that was TMI) but it is true they need some tall people toilet seats. I'm done ranting about that for now. Small and cute little place. I really like how the outside looks. I think it is an awesome addition to the community!! The rooms however are a bit small. I think you can fit like 70 people or so inside. I sat on the second row from the front and felt like something was out of place with the first row. And then BAM!! This first row was an addition to the theater room way after the fact. It now made sense why the first row was about a foot higher than the second row (the one I was in). To make matters worse........... a woman with really big puffy hair sat in front of me.... Fml..... I added a picture of this so that you ALL know that if you come here, DO NOT SIT ON THE SECOND ROW! We attended the matinee showing of Ant-Man. After 30 minutes and multiple restarts, we were told that the movie had to issue a refund for the entire theater. The issue is while they refunded the movie price...they told us that we were on the hook for the $1 per ticket convenience fee for online purchase. Myself and numerous other patrons protested that while we understood having to pay for the overpriced snacks and even parking...it is fraudulent to charge for a convenience fee on a service they were unable to provide. I was told there was nothing they could do...and while the cashier called the General Manager on the phone, the GM refused to talk with me and I was told to come back in an hour to discuss why I was on the hook. This is my neighborhood theater. I WANT THEM TO SUCCEED...but this is a process that should have been planned for and "TOO BAD SO SAD" is not going to encourage me to return **UPDATE** I had to go through the hassle of calling my bank and they refunded the $1 concession fee per ticket. However, The Harper Theater management needs to provide a contingency plan for errors that occur due to their mistakes (faulty equipment, etc) so that their customer base doesn't have to jump through hoops to receive back money for a service they were unable to provide. read more

I came here today with a friend for the 12 noon showing of "Best Man Holiday". When we arrived at the theatre about 15-20 minutes prior, there was a line almost reaching the corner of 53rd street. People were confused as to whether the line was just for people needing to purchase tickets or everyone- including those who purchased their tickets online, like us. When they finally opened the ticket window and doors at about 12pm, we were told that the the line was for both. Finally, someone opened the door and I guess a worker inside said that we did not have to wait in the line outside if the tickets were bought previously. Instead we were able to wait in a merged line inside, where the one person working behind the counter would alternate between selling tickets to those purchasing and scanning those who already bought their tickets online. Needless to say, people were upset. There were only three people working, two behind the concession counter, and only one at the two registers. Finally one of the workers came from behind the concession counter and started taking debit/credit and pre-purchased tickets. Now in most cases when you buy movie tickets online, you are able to print the tickets and show them at the counter. Here, the printed receipt or barcoded sheet, needs to be scanned AND the card used to purchase the tickets must be presented. They charge a $1 convenience fee for each ticket purchased online, but how convenient is that? Finally, we get inside the theater. We sit and wait until 12:53pm before they start the movie!!! At the end credits, they cut the film abruptly, I guess to encourage us to vacate the theater quickly. When we left there was a line down the long hallway of people trying to enter the theater we just left. They did not look happy. Plus, I could see that there were still issues at the counter with people complaining of standing in a line outside. I went to the nearest register and asked to be compensated for the delay of the film. She, without hesitation, issued two passes for my friend and I. They could have a gold mine on their hands with the location of the theater. But poor management, like only having three people in the theater during popular opening weekend showings, lack of responsible and knowledgeably managers on hand (I'm all for hiring young people, but everyone looks like they have not one clue of how to handle any issues that could arise), and the fact that you open the theater at the same time as the start of the first showing (come on people, this is just stupid!! God forbid you want snacks/food), is what will drive this theater down. Mismanagement was the reason the last theater ended up closing previously. read more

This is a nice and cozy place to go and catch a movie. I really like that you can get your movie tickets on line with never a problem. The young adults that work there are very nice and always make my popcorn just like I like it. The seats are very comfy and you can let the arms up if you like. The washrooms are clean Parking is not a problem if you get in the lot just a few doors down it's like 10 bucks for 4 hours so you can get a bite to eat before or after the movie. You can always find a Groupon on the place. But can't use on the first week of a new release. And that's cool read more

It's a pity that the only theatre in Hyde Park is always so full of problems. The staff there generally tries hard -- I've been given comp tickets twice because they either ran waaaay too late (more than 20 minutes, one time) or because the back screen was stuck which meant a good chunk of the screen was cut off (and the screens are already a smidge too small for the big movies anyway). To top it all off: Today, I discovered that the price of the movies there has gone up by a dollar, to $7, AND they checked my bag. Over twenty years and hundreds of movies in Chicago, and I've never had my bag checked. But I was suspicious of who was getting checked so I asked the two white women who came after me, each with a very conspicuous and large bag, if they had had their bags checked. Surprise! No, was the answer. The couple before me, one of whom was definitely a person of colour? Bag checked. I brought this to the attention of the staff and to their credit, they were genuinely sorry BUT I think this only proves that the bag-check policy needs to end. Why is it that one of the few and somewhat affordable theatres on the south side is also the only one to have a bag-check policy? NOT a coincidence that this policy exists in a mostly Black neighbourhood and that, by design or sheer carelessness, white people are exempt from it. Harper Theater: Do better. Either end the bag-check policy, which is ridiculous, or make damn sure you check *everyone's* bags. Best policy? Just end it. What are you so terrified of? read more

I am so glad that the movie theater is finally opened and back in Hyde Park! I went today to see 42 (a must see movie) and I was quite pleased. This reopening was long over due! The lobby is very nicely done and not dark like I remember. There is a box office outside, but we paid inside and literally it is when you walk in the door and I think they need to reconfigure the inside box office. Nothing like having another person on your back while you are trying to pay for the movie. There are four movie theaters, they are small, but I think it is perfect for a neighborhood movie theater. They have nice comfy leather seats and since movies are now two hours or longer these seats are perfect. Concession is typical with a few additional items. A little history: The movie theater originally opened in 1915 as Harper Theater and the name changed several times under the various owners and it finally closed in 2002. The theater is currently owned by University of Chicago and operated by 400 Theaters, who also manages the New 400 Theaters in Rogers Park (another Chicago neighborhood). The cost of the movie is $6.00 before 6p.m. and $8 afterwards and seniors are $6. You can also purchase your tickets on their website. I heard the young lady say there was parking near by and once construction is finished they will have parking next door. But street parking is available (just pay attention to the signs). Their official grand opening will be this summer. I will definately go back! read more

I went last night with my sister and we had an experience. The fire alarm went of twice in the middle of les mis and we had to stand out in below zero weather , not to mention they didnt rewind the movie the first time so we missed a few minuets. Now that being said I was impressed by how efficiently the staff got everyone evacuated from the theater. Not one person working there looked like they didn't know how to handle the situation. From the concessions people to the ticket takers everyone was getting the situation resolved. That was a huge plus for me , I like going somewhere and knowing that I can be in a safe situation. The staff was super friendly and this one guy was just corny in a cute old man way . BUT the best part was that they handed out free pasties and food from the cafe at the end of the show. We were all walking out with cartons of cupcakes, it made my night ! I like free shit! Now the only complaint was the damn doors! I recently went to see "Prisoners" at Harper Theater and throughout the entire film the heads of the actors were cut-off. It seems that the theater did not obtain the correct film size that fit the screen of this small theater. I proceeded to continue to watch the movie while looking at the actors' mouths throughout the entire film. At the end of the movie, the lobby was very busy and so I decided I would call the theater when I returned home. Of course the voice mail box was full. I then wrote an email to which I still have not received a reply. I also tried to leave a comment on the website, which they say is no longer accepting comments. I live in Hyde Park and would like to continue to support local business, but it seems like I am being forced to go back downtown to ICON. read more

This movie theater is weird. We just saw the movie Gone Girl at Harper earlier today and the theater was packed full of people. The only available seats were in the first three rows which didn't seem too bad at first because the screen isn't that big. However, the theater is designed in such a way that the third row of seats is lower than the front two... We didn't realize this until we sat in our third row seats and could only see about 50% of the screen. The rest of the screen was below the seats in front of us. Who designs a theater so that seats farther back are lower than seats in the front? What?? Also, the theater was filthy when we arrived. The empty seats all had a lot of trash in and around them. The floor was dirty and sticky. It seemed like no one cleaned up the theater after the last screening. The sound wasn't up very high so mostly we could hear people eating their snacks above the dialogue. Bad experience. We'll be going out of the neighborhood now for movies which is a shame because this theater is so convenient. I just don't get why it's so dirty. That seems pretty basic. Since this theater opened, we have patronized them near weekly. We have made a genuine effort to give this theater a chance despite previous experiences of consistently unmannerly customer service and occasional stale nachos or rancid Gold Peak black tea. There has been noticeable improvement in their concessions. On Saturday, February 15, 2014 in the afternoon, I purchased two matinee tickets for me and a friend as well as popcorn and nachos. We waited about 30 minutes for seating to open for the show. We snacked on concessions as we waited. When it came time to be seated, a Harper Theater crew member insisted upon searching our bags in order for us to see our movie. There was no sign posted inside or outside the theater indicating that there was a bag search policy. Therefore, we declined the bag search and requested refunds for the movie ticket purchases. Both the cashier and manager refused to issue a refund of the tickets. Movie passes were offered which we declined, because we will no longer patronize this movie theater. Due to the unmannerly customer service and questionable bag search policy, we will patronize Landmark Century Theater, ICON Theatre or AMC River East instead. read more

Horrible experience! My fiancé & I went tonight to see Prisoners. To our dismay, the projector was reportedly broken so we opted for Baggage Claim. Bad mistake! The theater was oversold & patrons came in saying they had "reserved" seating. The staff & management had the audacity to ask people to move! This created havoc & police were called. What type of policy allows reserved seating when the seats & aisles aren't even numbered! At no time did the ticket agents advise that seating was assigned. The general manager (so she said) is young & unprofessional! We left as the environment became belligerent & unsafe. It's a shame & a disgrace that the black dollar is disrespected by our own people. I'm not worried about returning to Harper, at this rate they won't be open long!! read more

As long as you know what you're in for ahead of time, you will definitely have a 5 Star experience. Harper Theater is not the most updated in their ticket sale system or in decor, but that's the charm of it all! The theatres are on the smaller size and a bit more intimate, but the seats are comfortable as heck and the people who work there truly bring me joy every time I come in! They only show a select amount of movies due to their size, but you can find all of that information online ahead of time. Their ticket prices are a bargain compared to AMC's, and they have a $5 Tuesday! Their snack prices are also quite affordable and they have great daily cocktail deals! This is the perfect place for a quaint movie going experience and is one of my favorite parts of the Hyde Park Neighborhood! read more

I saw two movies here. The first film Deadpool, the experience was..interesting. Some of the chairs were actually missing seats. This couple attempted to sit beside me and the guy freaked out when he couldn't find the actual seat to sit down. Who would steal a seat but not the chair? I don't understand... I would have told him but they showed up late and I wanted to get him back for standing in front of me for 2 min while his girl sat down. The second film, Independence Day 2 the experience was...much better. No one stood in front of me and I was able to watch the film without issues. Why the 3 stars? Well for one thing the popcorn is never fresh. Last time I had it here, I sat on the toilet longer than inside the movie theater for the actual movie. And second because you know your movie theater has problems when you are more concerned about finding an actual seat than a vacant seat. read more

If you go into this place as nothing more than a small neighborhood movie theater, Harper Theater is a good place to go. But you definitely have to go into it with tempered expectations. Even with the renovation and reopening its smaller than most of your other major theaters. Its another business that is on Groupon alot so if you can manage to get the deal (2 tix, 2 drinks, 1 popcorn, 1 snack), its a GREAT value. And one of the best things about the place is it allows you to pick your seats. Downside, again, is its small. So some things like service can be slow as at night, as they have the same people working multiple locations (ticket counter, food, etc). And because its small, noise travels. Also keep in mind this place is down the street from 2 major high schools. So its a chance you may get some rowdy teenagers. read more

Been sitting in this theater for an hour, waiting for Xmen to start. We had one update about thirty minutes ago, the same damn previews three times, and no assurance of compensation or start of the movie. This place is unreliable, overpriced, and a waste of time and money. Shame on the technicians and workers for their incompetency and lack of attention. Never come here for a movie!! You'd be better off making the trip downtown. Edit: They gave us refunds as well as vouchers for a free show, which I've used. When the theater's operational it's fine... it just needs to work on being operational. Wonderful addition to the community. I stopped in for a weekday matinee and was delighted to discover that the price of admission was only $6. I didn't purchase any snacks but the prices listed seemed to be really reasonable as well. The theater is modern and probably a little nicer than I even expected. The theaters are small but for a neighborhood like Hyde Park, that's to be expected. The sound quality is as one would expect for a newly built location but I did notice that it was easy to hear the sound coming from the adjacent theaters during my film's more quiet moments. The seats are comfortable but the are also leather which means that they can be a noisy when people move around in their seats. I probably wouldn't have gone that route when selecting the seats but that's just me. The theater also isn't stadium seating, it's more the old school each-row-is-elevated type of thing. The woman in front of me as very tall so my view was slightly obstructed by her head. It was a bit of an annoyance but nothing that would keep me from visiting the theater again. This theater reminds me of being in someones really really nice home theater. Leather seats, small screens, very cozy. Unfortunately some people forget they are not at home. One couple talked the whole movie, kept getting up and were just plain inconsiderate. They were shhhh'd but paid no mind. You have to take Harper Theater for what it is - a neighborhood movie theater. Yes, there are only four "screening" rooms. Yes, they are some of the smallest rooms I've ever seen. Which can be irritating when it's the opening night for a movie. I've never had a problem with the staff. Yes, some of them are nicer than others...but you'll find that anywhere. The popcorn is just okay...that can be hit or miss. The bathrooms are always clean, when I go, and that's a major plus for me. Bottom-line, I appreciate this theater. For ages, I thought Hyde Park needed it's own movie theater and the Harper Theater meets that need. I've been here four times and I've always enjoyed my experience. I love customer appreciation Sundays! :-) Is this theater on the same level as an AMC brand? No. But, if you want to have dinner and a movie in the Hyde Park/Kenwood area ... boom! This is a pretty decent little theater, as long as you don't get caught in that second row. I've been here a few times now and enjoyed myself each time. This most recent time I was granted the pleasure of sitting in the second row. Now I am not a fan of sitting that close to the screen but I was excited to see this movie so, a lady had to do what she had to do. And just as I was thinking this isn't so bad I guess, then some people came and sat right in front of us. Well needless to say there went that thought. The second row of seats is sunken down, and lower than the others, why I am not sure. But for that particular reason that makes that the worse seat in the house, especially if some people come and sit in front of you. But I still enjoyed the movie we saw and had a great time. Although I did not get any refreshments this time, but they leave much to be desired. The times I have tried their popcorn it always seems to taste old, and the candy I've gotten has tasted stale. So I have made the decision not to get anymore refreshments from here. All in all though it's a pretty good neighborhood theater. read more

If you keep your expectations low, then Harper Theater won't disappoint. I went to a matinee of Birdman on Saturday, 1/24/15. When I walked in the front door of the theater, the line to buy tickets wrapped around to the back of the lobby and was starting to queue up along the wall. There was only one cashier for tickets, and she was very slow. I finally got to the front of the line and paid the $6 for my matinee with a $5 bill and $1 in quarters. She put the money in the register, then promptly forgot I gave her $1 in quarters as she accused me of only giving her $5. I reminded her very kindly that I gave her $1 in quarters, then she gave me my ticket and mumbled the theater. The movie projection was messed up; the projector seemed to have been bumped or propped up as the top 1/5 of the movie was above the screen. Since the theater's curtains are black, you could still see the movie, it just looked kind of weird. But that seems like something they could have easily fixed before the movie started. Additionally, my fellow movie patrons felt like this was the kind of movie theater where one should comment on the movie...during the movie. I feel like Harper Theater's management isn't malicious, just lazy. It's not worth the disappointment I experience every time I go there, so I'll just stop going. read more

I recently bought a groupon for the theatre (tickets for two + refreshment) for a Monday through Thursday. I found the venue was clean and everyone seemed pretty helpful! The sound was a bit too loud and the seats were super comfortable. The tickets are indeed cheap, but overall you get what you pay for. Honestly for the price, the theater and the seats are decent. However, they really need to work on the customer service. Not only does it take forever to ring up tickets, which means if you arrive at showing time, you should be prepared to miss the first few minutes of the movie. It also seems like none of the staff communicates, and no one on shift seemed to know about a promotion they had displayed right on their front door, causing further completely avoidable delays. read more

There's not much to do in Hyde Park, so having a theatre is awesome. Unfortunately the other patrons at this theatre tend to be loud, and often plain rude. Don't go here if you want a quiet evening at the movies. I only see blockbusters here where the plot and dialogue won't be ruined by people yelling on their cell phones. Came here for a 5:05 showing of Sicario. Arrived early as it is opening weekend & to my demise, there was a child's party going on in the theater the movie was supposed to play at. Not only was the theater itself trashed, it took forever for the people to leave, & the staff to clean up the mess. It's 5:26 & the movie still hasn't started yet. How does this even happen??? I remember this theater as a kid and it suddenly being shut down. Well, it's back! It's nice to have a movie theater close to Woodlawn/Hyde Park area and not have venture downtown. It's really small which leads to some movies being sold out. Took my nephew to see Monsters University only to be told it was sold out. Granted we went on a busy Fourth of July weekend and with the usage of a groupon, it wasn't so bad to kill time in Hyde park and come back later. The tall guy with the locs was super helpful and the young lady with the bright smile was really helpful at th concession stand. Only gripe was seeing one of the concession attendants be on her cell phone in front of customers. At my job, that's a no no. All in all, I'd come back with my nephew to see his Pixar and Disney movies, but I'll stick to 600 N Michigan for my blockbusters.
