Smoke-free gambling! The best part of gambling in Illinois is people can actually breathe here without getting cancer. The gaming floor is tiny compared to the typical Vegas casino resort, with slot-type machines the most popular video gaming. There are very few jacks or better or standard card video games, and those that were had terrible odds (I see other reviews mentioned poor odds, too). There are a lot of blackjack and mini baccarat tables and a private poker area which had two games going. The employees were extremely nice; a shout-out to Sandra in the Total Rewards cage--great attitude. The Fresh Buffet was a BIG letdown. We had two-for-one coupons, but the cashier made us jump through so many hoops to be able to use it--none of which were mentioned on the coupon. The food is barely cafeteria level, though the desserts were nice. I didn't stay in the hotel, but the rates during the week seem low, though they charge for WiFi. There isn't much to do in Metropolis. Visiting the Superman statue and attending the Superman Celebration held during the summer are highlights. read more

I had a great time at this casino. Blackjack tables had a surprisingly low minimum bet of $5 at one of them which is good for people that want to stretch their money and play longer. Tables were also 3 to 2 blackjack which is great. Most casinos are going to 6 to 5. Dealers were fun and friendly which always makes the experience that much better. No smoking inside which is good for people that don't smoke. It's a small casino, but that's expected giving the area doesn't have much around it. This is my 2nd visit to this location. It's a quirky funky little place, where there a Harrahs casino in the middle of nowhere. Friendly is the norm! Clean rooms every time and very inexpensive if you book online!! Please don't compare this to Vegas , did you not just read the part that was written that said it's in the middle of nowhere?!! Room was nice and clean with a large couch, free wifi, separate toilet from bath, free coffee, office desk. Desk ladies were nice and dealt with an irrational customer very well. Way to kindly stand your ground girls!! Sadly the buffet was closed as it wasn't quite the weekend so we ate elsewhere. No smoke- a refreshing change compared with most casinos. Though there was construction on the roads a block away it didn't affect us at all. Bed was very soft -- felt like in sunk into a hole and my ankles and wrists were outside of the hole. Parking is bad. Lots of stairs to take. If you need a luggage cart, good luck they have 3 luggage carts for 252 rooms and no bell hops. Front desk help, good luck their too. They camp out in an office out of site and you have to ring a bell and wait for the mystery person to arrive. Then they give you the look that you interrupted whatever game she was probably playing. Played cards for about 45 minutes and no drinks were offered. We did get offered later that day when playing slots. My favorite card game texas holdem was never opened. Our bed frame was metal ( room 443) and every movement made a loud squeaky noise. Beds were worse than a motel 6. The hallways have a visible dust line along both sides of the hallway like they only vacuum the middle and not where the edge meets the walls. Bright note is the big superman statue in town and the restaurant fat eds. Great food. So see the statue and eat at fat eds and leave town. Dont waste your time at this ceasars location. read more

This is the oldest, ugliest, and smallest casino I've ever been to. I've been spoiled by Las Vegas and even St. Louis. It's on a boat and there are four or five floors. Everything is so ancient and old fashioned. Nothing modern at all. I think you go to this place because it's the closest one around. You go here to play, not to enjoy the atmosphere. Casino was okay, kind of on the small side compared to other casinos. The outside of it doesn't look like a casino. Looked more like a hospital to me but it's only about an hour and half from home. I went mid week during the day so not real busy time to go. My daughter, mother, and I went and they both came home with little more than they started with after about four hours of play so that's always a plus. I on the other hand didn't have any luck at all:( did see quite a few hand pay outs while there but the regulars said that's unusual because the machines hadn't been paying anything lately. Rooms were clean, only have 2 complaints. We didn't get any soap for our bathroom, meaning the soap for the sink. Maybe they just missed it which wasn't the end of the world. Other thing is woke up in middle of night to a barking dog, you can hear everything that goes on in the hallway and when the doors close because there loud and heavy. For the casino no complaints. Got booked to this hotel via hotwire. The room might be considered dated, depending on your viewpoint (as the hotel is recent, but it replaced a steamboat that actually cruised on the river). Anyways, it was $47 a night for 2 double beds. The TV took a bit of work getting it to work with HDMI on my laptop, and the front desk wasn't helpful in that regards, although they were friendly at check-in. Linens and towels were clean, and the bathroom had a toilet with its own door, which was a nice addition. I was told there was a restaurant open until 3am, Ace Express, but it was closer to a fast food joint in the food court at a mall. Nonetheless, $10 got me a philly cheesesteak-type sandwich with fries. That satisfied my appetite, given I didn't get to the hotel until around midnight. Oh, and as an added bonus - the lamps on the night stands all have USB ports, so you can charge your phones and devices! All in all, especially given the price I paid, I'd stay here again. read more

This review is for the hotel. I wouldn't change a single thing except the bed pillows. They didn't have enough support, and we both had a hard time getting comfortable with them. Bathroom floor was so clean and shiny I could see the lights and bathroom fixtures in the reflection on the floor. I ran out of time, but the deep soaking tub looked so inviting. I'm used to about 72 degrees on my thermostat during the summer, but I had to lower the room thermostat to about 66 degrees to get the same feel, but it did eventually get there, and it was comfortable. It was nice to have a refrigerator, lots of TV channels, room service and restaurants/bars on site, and some were open pretty late. That was very convenient. read more

This casino is a hidden gem. I love going there for weekend gambling trips. Nice staff! I love how there is no smoking allowed in this casino. Wholesome crowd and safe. One of my more favorite casinos I've been too, albeit small and not as accomodating for non-gamblers as casinos in Vegas. The casino is on the small side, but I don't really like to gamble, so I can't comment on that. My review is for the hotel and, specifically, for the weekend of the total eclipse. For around $50, we got a very nice room with a comfortable bed and good pillows. You just can't beat that. But what really wowed me were the eclipse glasses provided in the room. They were prepared, and thoughtful, to have those on hand for the total eclipse (which was one of the coolest things I've ever seen, by the way. If you get the chance to see a total eclipse, do!). We had eclipse glasses of our own, but used theirs, since they had the location & date on them, and, well, Superman (a city called Metropolis has to milk it for all it's worth, right?). The only thing that bothered me was that we were put in a smoking room. We reserved the room nearly a year in advance (we planned ahead to be in the path of totality), but upon arrival, were told that our reservation just guaranteed a room would be available, but not necessarily a nonsmoking room. They assured us the room had been "ozoned" (whatever that means). We had no choice but to take the room available. It ended up not smelling of smoke, so perhaps the ozone-ing works. But I suspect they gave our room away and it was annoying. read more

The casino was small but we enjoyed ourselves. We went on a Saturday and it wasn't overcrowed and it was easy to get in on a table game. The only downside was that the alcohol is not free. The casino is smoke-free so that's a plus is you're a non-smoker. The staff was very friendly. The buffet was very affordable, but like the casino, it is smaller than others. Still a great place for such a small town and the closest casino to Clarksville, so I'll definitely be back many times. read more

Hotel is a little old-looking as far as the rooms go, but rooms were clean and that is number one with me. My reason for low rating is that when you book a room online, you must be very careful. The website for some reason will give you a smoking room even when you have your preferences set to non-smoking. I have made enough reservations on enough websites to know how to use an online system. When we called to change the reservation to non-smoking,the rude staff member kept insisting that we made a smoking reservation. They told us we would have to pay the current rate for a non-smoking room, instead of the discounted rate we got for making the reservation months in advance. We said forget it, and cancelled our reservations entirely. Stupid way to do business. We went to the place across the parking lot. It's not as nice, but the staff are eager. read more

The hotel was nice and bathroom was amazing with a really big tub. Bed was comfortable and room clean. Be aware of the hidden charges they don't tell you about until check out. Resort fee of 15.00 a day, room revenue fee of 38.85 a day. So it was 228.60 + 25.15 taxes + 38.85 room revenue fee and 15.00 for resort fee. So 576.35 for 2 days + 50 dollar deposit. Most people who worked there were nice, except for the older lady that cashes out tickets at 1100pm. She was very very rude. The winnings are so/so, you will lose your money. Some machine don't hit at all, so you stick in 10 dollars and lose it without hitting once. Others let you play for 10 maybe 15 my minutes with 20 dollars. The card tables and crap tables I thought were a little high from 5 dollars to 25 dollars per hand to start and up from there. We had fun playing the dime and quarters machines. They say penny machines, but there not, it's 10, 25, 60, 88 cents ante to play. The restaurants were really good though. Bridges Dining company has an awesome steak dinner and the steak was phenomenal. Well worth the price. The Grill was great with affordable prices for exceptional food. read more

I never get to win every time I play here which sucks. They have a small casino. Blackjack, three card poker, baccarat etc. but they don't have texas hold em' vs the dealer. The view outside the casino is great! You will enjoy the Ohio rivers panoramic view, the bridge and boats. The restaurants in this casino are agreeable. Harrah's Hotel and Casino in Metropolis got the job done, my friends. When I told people I was vacationing in Metropolis for my boyfriend's 30th birthday, they all kinda looked at me sideways. Metropolis? Illinois? The *home of superman*? What the HECK are you going to do there for three days? Well, let me tell you. Like I said, the man was turning 30. What did he want to do on his 30th birthday? Teach me how to shoot a shotgun. Yes, you read that right. So, we went down to Metropolis where he has some family, to shoot guns. And gamble. And shoot guns. And gamble. Everyone at the Harrah's Metropolis was BEYOND friendly. It's that Southern hospitality, y'all. Every single staff person we encountered seemed to legitimately love their job. The rooms were nice enough, the beds were comfortable, and the rooms were clean. They also have pet-friendly rooms available! The casino was great, the BF and I sat at a blackjack table and the dealer was nice to me, even though it was my first time playing. The breakfast buffet was good too - made to order eggs and omelettes, home fries, grits AND cheesey grits, bacon, sausage, fruit, some sort of bread pudding, waffles, coffee, yogurt, you name it. This Harrahs is an ok hotel and casino. Got a deal on a room for $56 a night. Room was decent nothing fancy. The casino was pretty small and no self serve soda machines or coffee. The outside of the hotel needs some remodeling building looks faded. When you walk in though it is very nice and kind of has a Vegas feel. We used this hotel as a stopping point on a vacation so it worked well for that. I was shocked to find this hotel/casino in a town the size of Metropolis. Stayed in room 540 last night while traveling from the Chicago area to middle Tennessee. Room 540 was double queen room. Absolutely the worst mattresses I have ever slept on in any hotel. EVER. So close to a 5 star rating but they drop the ball in several key areas. Bridges restaurant-- only ate there for breakfast but it was perfect. $7 for a huge perfect omelet with generous portion of home fires & toast. Hotel -- very nice & clean. Room appears to be recently remodeled. Mini frig did not get that cold. Weekdays the rate is only $50 but they tack on a mandatory $11 amenity fee (wi-fi). Casino -- a mini-me Harrahs with only 800 slots. Well lead out with plenty of room in aisles. Most casinos in Illinois have 1500-1800 slots. Service on the floor was quick. The only negative and it's a big one is the slot pay outs are only 89.0% the lowest in Illinois (most are 90.0-91.3%). The casino also closes for 4 hours between 5am-9am. Yes you must pay for adult beverages, that's an Illinois law. I can overlook a lot of things about a casino but an 89% payout means it's unlikely I would not go out of my way to play here again. Staff -- everyone was very friendly. Most wore blue jeans. Lots of staff on the floor. Town -- Metropolis is a declining small river blue collar town (pop. 6500). Almost no traffic on the streets. It's claim to fame is the Superman statue about 5 blocks north of the casino. Nearest major city is Nashville, TN about 150 miles south. Regulars say the casino is packed over the weekend as people from Nashville make the drive north. read more

The casino floor was very cramped for space, they wouldn't give me a VIP Host to talk to about Comp for a meal and room. From ads playing in the Nashville market, I assume the casino has been remodeled. I didn't stay in the hotel, so my rating is for the casino. The only reason it wasn't a 5 is because I did not have a chance to try the food. There are a lot of slot machines (my speed) and some table games. It looked like the tables might fill up fast if it was a busy weekend night, but when I was there, there were plenty of seats and open machines. It seemed like enough machines to easily handle a busy weekend as well. The best was how friendly everyone who worked there was. From the people picking up empty glasses to the cashiers to the floor hospitality hosts. People complaining about paying for alcohol obviously haven't gone to a lot of casinos outside of Vegas ... most I've been to charge for alcoholic drinks (coffee and soda are free here, as in the others I've visited). Next time I will bring my wife and stay at the hotel. The casino is totally non-smoking, which was a real plus for me and the people there didn't make me afraid to bring my wife (as is sometimes the case in off-market casinos). Well done, Harrah's. This review is for the hotel. I booked through Hotwire and got a good deal. Or so I thought. Within a few hours of checking in I found a syringe in one of the waste paper baskets in my room. My phone fell off the desk and into the garbage can. I reached to get it and I bumped the syringe. Thank God it had the needle lid on otherwise I could have been stabbed by it! The managers only offered to comp me a meal. That was it! They didn't seemed bothered by it at all. I guess this is a daily occurrence here. First let me say the hotel is nice. Room is clean and functional. Hotel staff is very friendly. HOWEVER, on Sunday day night September 4, 2022, a female pit boss in the casino that goes by MJ, blatantly discriminated against my legally blind husband. We were playing a table game, high card flush, with another gentleman. MJ stood by the table watching us play from the moment we sat down at the table. MJ also had to witness me talking to my husband and leaning over to see his cards to tell him what his cards were because he's legally blind. We have been to this casino multiple times in the past and this was never an issue before. After a few hands, MJ started trying to tell me how to play my hand and how to align my cards for the dealer. I started to do this. MJ still stood by the table watching me and my husband playing this game. Again, I'm still telling him what his cards are in front of her and she's not said a thing. She then came over and started trying to tell my husband how to play his hand and that he needed to put his cards in order. She didn't say "sir" or try to address him directly which is why he didn't k ow she was then speaking to him and neither did I. I finally looked up to realize she was speaking to my husband as she was looking directly at him not using a name or "sir" or anything and I politely said "he doesn't see well enough to do that". MJ responded "oh okay" and that was the end of that. A few minutes go by and the dealer changes. The new dealer dealt one hand and when I leaned over to tell my husband what was in his hand, the dealer said you can't look at his cards and before I could explain she was calling for pit boss MJ to come back to the table. Dealer asks MJ about me helping my husband so he can play. MJ then tells me I can't help my husband with his hands and that she had told me that previously. She did not in any way tell me that I couldn't help him. She did not offer any resolutions and only said "if can't see he can go play blackjack". This was less than polite. When I told her directly the prior interactions and that she never never told me I couldn't help him, she got literally 6-8 inches from my face and said "oh yes I did". Again she only wanted to argue about what wasn't even said. My husband chimes in and says "can the dealer help me?". To which, MJ replied, "yes". Fast forward to the next table we go to and sit at, immediately upon sitting down my husband says to the dealer "sir, I don't see very well you will need to help me with my cards so we don't cause any issues". The dealer was confused and asked his superior which was again, MJ the pit boss, who then now says the dealer can't help him. So don't go to Harrahs if you're legally blind because they will not in any shape form or fashion accommodate those with no to low vision. Apparently the ADA doesn't exist there and blind peoples money is t good enough for them. Likely will not be back if this is how people are treated. It was such an embarrassing ordeal for my 47 year old husband who is already worried and self conscious because he can't see. read more

HAPPY TO BE BACK We have been going to Metropolis since they first got a boat.. Players Casino, Merv Griffin owned it at the time. It was a GREAT PLACE. When Harrah's bought it, we still enjoyed going up there, of course it changed quite a bit after they bought it. The slots did get tighter, but still my wife and myself had better luck there, then in Evansville, Aztar now re-branded under the corporate name Tropicana. We like to stay at one place for the most part unless we're traveling, so once they banned smoking on the boat, we decided to just play in Evansville, looking back now, that was a BIG MISTAKE. Honestly we had better luck in Metropolis. I had told many of the host that worked in Aztar, now Tropicana that we would make this our only gambling destination, like I said that was a MISTAKE. I'll leave it at that. We've gone back to Harrah's and I can honestly tell you they're much friendly there, and management runs a better casino their period. The last 3 Sat nights we've gone to Harrahs, we pretty much go every Sat night. THE GREAT THING IS NOW.. We have a touch of a real casino off the water so to speak, and it looks like it's going to be a real WINNER for Harrah's and hopefully for loyal patrons. They really did a terrific job on the new digs and we had fun last night 11/22/14 I didn't win, but my wife almost broke us even, but believe me I don't expect to win every time I walk in to a casino, it's a game of chance period. That said I'd tell anyone that lives in our geographic area, to most definitely give Harrah's in Metropolis a good look now, especially to my fellow Tennesseans and our friends to the north Kentucky. The only reason why Harrah's metropolis is getting 3 stars instead of 4, is because the restaurant was horrible. We ate at the nicer restaurant right by the casino and the food was atrocious. It was, easily, one of the worst meals I've ever eaten and the prices are ridiculous. It made my husband sick. The room however, was beautiful. We ended up here because we were searching for rooms on a mobile app to split up a long drive we were taking. Not only did we get a great rate, but the amenities in the hotel where wonderful. Really really soft king size bed and super deep bathtub. Honestly, I wish I had that bed in my own house. Third time here. First time, excellent service, past two times, declining to the "disappointed" level. The later it gets, the more the service declines. I come for a "get away" experience from Nashville, and when I went to get food tonight, the girl at the counter was uninterested and bothered, and the thing that I ordered was unavailable. I opted for nachos, knowing that it's usually a given that even though the cheese is way processed, it's a safe late night bet. As she rolled her eyes, I asked if they had jalepenos.
