Called the store to confirm hours. Told them I was looking for mother of the groom dress. They said they were open and to come. I drove over an hour and when I got there they told me I needed an appointment. I wasn't even allowed to step up the stairs. Will never spend my money here. Rude people and I grew up and lived in Monroe. Bought my daughter's prom dress here too! I'll take the trip to NJ. Better customer service and not treated like a piece of crap! read more

The store has many beautiful dresses to select from and a dressing room to try them on. Make sure you have an appointment to try them on as you will wait for help or be told to come back at a scheduled time. From my experience-The owner salesperson will direct you to the least flattering dress for your age or shape. The shop happened to be having a great sale going on and I did find myself many dresses to choose from at a discounted price. A 400+ dress was a steal for 175 or less but they don't let you know that alterations might cost just as much as the dress until after you have a fitting. The seamstress that they had was efficient and accommodating. When I came to pick up my dress I noticed that I did not have a garment bag but only a cheap plastic bag although others by mine had garment bags. I requested a garment bag and was told mine was a discounted dress so I could not. Imagine after spending 400+ dollars on a dress but couldn't have a proper bag to store it in. I have bought other items in the store on previous occasions and have been satisfied but this last time really just rubbed me the wrong way. I think the owner is pretentious and somewhat of a snob. I think all customers should be treated with respect and courtesy regardless how they look. I think most customers come there to find something special and feel special but you won't always get it at the Harriman Clothing store. read more

I have been to Harriman Clothing in the past for a formal dress and was there recently for my daughter's wedding. This was the most amazing experience shopping for a dress! The sales associate, Lois Elise was so welcoming and knowledgeable when helping me find the perfect dress that suited my body type! They always have a beautiful selection of dresses and my daughter and I went in with about 7 pictures from their website of dresses we wanted to see. Lois pulled each of those dresses for me but also added one that she said would be perfect for me and had me try that one first. Perfect it was!!! I still tried all the ones we had picked but nothing compared to the dress she picked out. It was not only flattering but was very elegant. I am so thankful that we got to work with Lois and would highly recommend to all who are looking for an evening, wedding or special occasion dress to go to Harriman Clothing and ask for LoisElise. I have been shopping at Harriman for the last 4 years, in spite of the fact I don't pay sales tax in New Jersey on clothes and that this place is 45 minutes from my home. I'm not surprised to see negative views on the customer service of this shop. While I will say, the associate gave me an hour of her time; I think it was more so she could watch me handling the merchandise. I tried to converse and enjoy her company. She was blunt, cold, and condescending. I felt as though I was unworthy to be shopping at such an elite establishment. It's a shame. Would give zero stars if that was an option, but it's making me give at least 1. I remember being a 17 year old girl, prom dress shopping with my friends when an unsteady shelf fell over and knocked over a bag that they demanded I pay for bc there was a less then a centimeter scratch. The brunette owner was so unbelievably rude to me, and didn't give even consider that the bag might have been previously damaged because the store is already unorganized. The store has some trendy, beautiful items. That may be the only positive quality, as the owner of the store exhibits poor customer service and this can make a customer never come back. I suppose it depends what you go to this overpriced store for, but if you are going for bridesmaid dresses, you may want to think twice. The owner of the store pins the dress and sends it to a local seamstress; however, if a mistake is made in the work (whether it is the seamstress or the owner that has pinned the dress), there is no discount offered. At any rate, when there is a mistake, any customer would appreciate if a discount is offered when a customer has to make an additional trip to the seamstress and find the time to get to the seamstress. In my case, the owner told me she already gave a discount and rudely asked me to not make her feel bad--not even acknowledging the customer's point of view and the fact that she made ME feel bad. If a discount cannot be given, so be it-it's not about the money-it's the principle. The owner could use some empathy and learn how to respectfully speak with customers--as her young staff do! After shopping around for a Mother of the Groom dress with no luck, I was pleasantly surprised at the nice selection of dresses, albeit a bit pricey, but my pleasure was short lived. After being measured by the owner of the store, whom I thought was the person doing the alterations, she recommended the size to order, which was my normal size, and a size smaller than the dress I tried on in the store, which was too big. Upon receiving the dress and trying it on, it was wayyy too small in the hip area and when I my voiced concern, she said it would be no problem to do the alterations, there was plenty of material in the seam and better than paying more money to do extensive alterations on a dress that was too big. So I made the appointment and went back for my 1st fitting; and when she told me it was way too tight and no material in the outer layer to let out, I became slightly annoyed and told her she measured me and ordered the size she chose and that SHE said there was plenty room to release the seam. She became defensive and said I could swap with the dress off the rack, which was way too big and required a lot of expensive alterations. I said that was not acceptable since I paid so much for a new dress. She became indignant with me and said all her dresses are new and perfectly fine off the rack, until I showed her the big stain in the front and the huge hole at the bottom. She then proceeded to tell me it would be difficult to get another dress in, but would check, and told me I'd be charged a re-stocking fee of 20%! I held my tongue, but my blood was boiling as I told her that was not acceptable. So she proceeded with the fitting and by the next try on, the tight area was fine. Now she had to proceed with the measuring of the hem and taking in the bodice. She only measures and pins and sends the garment out to a seamstress, so when I mentioned 2 areas that needed to be taken in, she disagreed with me and was giving me an attitiude the whole time, looking down hr nose and finding excuses to blame me for the poor fit and kept referring to my under garments as the reason for the fit not being right. Now that all the alterations are done, and I picked up my dress, I'm not happy with the work. It's definitely a problem not having the seamstress doing the fitting. The bodice isn't fitted properly and fits like a tube instead of a dress with a waist, and the padding in the top is not properly aligned with my boobs. I can't believe the cost of it all to have such a horribly fitting dress! The hem and lower area is fine, but the 2 things I pointed out needing fixing in the bodice are not done! Now with 2 days before the wedding I'm scrambling to try and find someone to fix it!!! I don't recommend dealing with this store; the customer service from the owner is atrocious, which is baffling because the other employees have always been very nice and helpful. If you get your dress there, take it to a seamstress you trust who can do proper alterations. read more

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the previous review. The customer service at this store is sadly lacking. I purchased a $400 mother of the bride dress there. When it came in I called and asked if I needed an appointment to try it on and pick it up. I was told by the owner that I did not. When I stopped by to try it on I said I would need help in the dressing room and the owner said she would help. After waiting about 10 minutes in the dressing room I got dressed and took the dress and left. When I told the owner I was leaving she said she was short staffed and asked if I had an appointment. I told her she herself had told me I didn't need one. She didn't offer to help me at that point, she just let me leave telling me if I needed alterations to let her know and make an appointment. When I got home the dress does need some significant alterations because it was ordered a size bigger than what I tried on, which fit well. Now I have to find a local seamstress to fix the dress, I wouldn't think of going back to Harriman Clothing for those alterations or anything else ever! read more

I had read some less than kind reviews of this store, but was pleasantly surprised when I visited. I was treated well, the selection of dresses was large, and the sales person was helpful. I heard the sales person tell a costumer, who chose a very expensive gown, that the gown wasn't the right color for her. That was honesty. She could have easily sold this woman that dress. I had to buy a wrap for a formal dress last minute. I stopped in there and they had some colorful wraps in the dress section folded on a stand. The wraps were not priced. I found one that was very pretty. The wrap was made of rayon (not silk). I paid $50 for the wrap which I thought was a bit high for synthetic material but it was pretty and I did not have time to shop around. I tried to steam out the wrinkles from the fabric since it was folded at the store and not hung and they are not steaming out. Not sure about the quality of the fabric. read more

I completely agree with the previous reviews. I had a really bad experience with the owner as well. I purchased a dress and had the very expensive alterations done there. When the owner pinned the dress, I told her twice i thought the shoulder was too big. She told me once it was sewn it wouldn't be. Needless to say - it was too big and was slipping off me. They sent it back to be fixed three different times and assured me it would be ready in time. When I showed up the final time to pick it up (two days before the event), it wasn't back from the seamstress yet and the owner simply told me that it shouldn't have been promised to me at that time. She rushed the seamstress to hurry and bring it to the store and an hour later the dress arrived. It finally fit, but the beading was not fixed properly. I had no choice but to take it as i needed to wear it. The owner was very rude when we asked her to give a discount and offered a tiny amount off and then when my friend said to me that we will never recommend this store to anyone, she snapped at us, telling us we crossed a line. I basically was told then if I wanted the dress I had to pay the full amount of the alterations, and I could always bring it back after the event to have the beading fixed. That didn't do me any good, this was bought for a special occasion. For a store owner to behave that way was shocking. What happened to the customer is always right? read more
