I was dreading coming here - who likes dealing with their car registration? No one.. Online, it showed this was the only location close to me, other than driving rather far south west. For renewals, they have other kiosks and stores (from what it sounds like?) that can do it but it wasn't clear about if this could be done for new registrations. The website shows no available appointments at either location for the next 60 days. I tried calling the automated number to see if they took walk-ins, but it only stated the address and hours. Some reviews said they do walk-ins in the morning so I figured I'd try my luck. I got there around 7:30am, before opening. They didn't have a parking garage, which I found odd for a state building. Street parking isn't allowed until 9am so the paid parking lots or garages are the only option if you're driving. The one across the street says $14 but it's actually $17 after taxes and fees. There were two other people already waiting outside as myself and another person came up. We kind of tried to form a line but as other people came, not everyone did. At 8am everyone went in. I was the 4th to get a ticket and had a short wait. Just barely enough time to finish my registration application. I was out in under 20 minutes! I was registering an out of state vehicle so I was anxious about having all the right documents and the process. The woman who helped me was nice and made it easy. Overall, it was a surprisingly easy and quick experience! I just wish there had been a parking lot and some type of place outside that would say "start line here" or something to that effect. read more

The staff was friendly and helpful. But I can't understand why there's 20 customer service booths and only 3 people are working at a time. It shouldn't take an hour to renew an auto registration, when the actual process only takes 5 minutes. 55 minutes of waiting, for 5 mins of service, because they're 10% staffed. read more

Harris County Tax Office - Entrance - Tax Services Near Me - Houston, Texas

Quit complaining, people. Downtown's Tax Office is better than Bellaire's Tax Office. This one got chairs for people to sit, instead of waiting in line worrying about people breathing on your neck. I was turned away over there because I didn't have an appointment. So, I went home to make an appointment. I got one for just a week away. There was plenty of parking choices. I came here at 2:14 and appointment was set at 2:20. Customers were cordial, except a few upsets about the rules. They shouted at the employees. Because the waiting room was pretty big. They didn't bother me minding my own business. I sat there wondering when my number will be called. I have a title transfer. I assume the letter T fits the description. Also, every T was going to window 9. Okay, this employee must be knowledgeable with transfers. Nope. Not so. I have a spousal transfer. She demanded me to fill up affidavit or she was gonna charge me $130 for tax based on the vehicle value. Hold up! According to Texas Administrative Code RULE §3.80 section B subsection 2, I don't need any paperwork. I challenged her with the law page I printed out. She went to someone in the back, could be her superior. She came back and finished the transaction. I was documenting the time from the beginning to the end. It took less than 10 minutes. But it took me almost an hour since I walked in to the office. I was so glad I took a whole day off to taking care of my business. read more

I needed to transfer five vehicle titles, three from my father's estate, and two for employees. This took five separate trips to this office, $85 in parking, and at least seven hours of wasted time. My mother is long deceased. I am an only child. I have been an attorney for 28 years. My father's vehicles should be easy as there just ain't no one else. One employee was given a vehicle from his grandmother's estate. It is currently titled in his uncle's name. The same employee gave a vehicle to another employee as a way of helping him get on his feet after some adversity. You'd think this would be easy as well. No. Trip 1: told I need an appointment. When asked when this started, the officer at the front desk stated "It has always been this way." Bullshit. I've been walking into the Pech Road annex my entire life and transferring titles. So I set an appointment (about three weeks out) while I was there. Of course, deputy friendly refused to answer any questions but continued to insist that I set an appointment (which I had already done). Trip two, with appointment: I managed to transfer one title from my father. Struck out on the other two. One was my fault as I could not locate the certificate of title. The second one failed because I was missing a form and was not allowed to fill it out while there. It would have taken three minutes. "You have to set another appointment." The two employee transfers were not completed because I needed an authorization form from the transferee authorizing me to transfer title to them. (Yes, despite being their attorney.) Trip three with appointment: transferred another of my father's vehicles. Struck out on the two employee transfers because now I need a bill of sale as this office will not recognize the gift of a vehicle unless it is between certain familial relations. (No mention of this at all during the first two visits.) Trip four, with appointment: Got angry. Threatened to mandamus Annette Ramirez and have a judge order the office to transfer the titles. Transferred the last of my father's vehicles. Transferred one employee vehicle. The clerk would not complete the transfer of the other because the transfer date on the back of the title does not match the transfer date on the application (which matches the date if the bill if sale I had to prepare). Rather than correcting the date (which the clerk told me was "forgery," I assure you, it isn't), I was sent back to my office to get a "Statement of Facts" signed by the transferor. Repressing the strong urge to file suit, I am heading back this afternoon, again without an appointment, to try to complete the final transfer. Elapsed time: two and a half months. Total parking fees: $84.75. Total billable time lost is WAY in excess of $2,000. This office is a clown car. The clerks are not trained to solve problems (or to "serve" the public in any capacity) but rather to identify creative reasons to refuse to do anything. The answer is ALWAYS "You will have to set another appointment (and hopefully bother someone else)." In the intervening two and a half months, I have a 47 year old, African American, ex-convict, who is a great employee and a thoroughly decent man, and who has tried in every conceivable way to obey Texas law, driving around in a car that it titled to someone else and praying he doesn't get pulled over. I have another employee with a classic Cadillac that he can't register, insure, or sell. And I have three vehicles that I can't do anything with save for allow to sit in a driveway and deteriorate. place is cool, every time i come here i have no problem and all staffs are helpful. not sure if other time frames are different but i come here during the mornings. the first floor seemed a bit busy but the services i need are on the higher floors and there is no wait, walk in or appt is fine. everything is easily accessible and clean, many elevators. the parking is limited, of course i get it it's downtown, street parking.. but i think for a place like this where a lot of people come to for services, they should provide a parking lot. and.. when you call this place you hear the automated voice off the start and tbh it's loud and obnoxious. i think it might be better if they changed it up to a more calmer tone. it sounds like a speech from a highschooler. read more

For car registrations, I feel like this is what they do. They try to squeeze every penny out of you by never sending your sticker and forcing you to come and waste your time/money. In 2 different years, I've done my car registration renewal online only to never receive the sticker, so I've had to come here. The clerk openly admitted that it's a common occurrence. I doubt USPS loses it that often because they don't lose most of my letter mail. I have a theory that they never send it and force you to come here or your local tax office. By coming here, I have to pay for street parking. And I also have to pay $6 to get it printed. Here's the story: I renewed it on September 20, and decided to visit the office October 8 since I never got my sticker. I figured it wouldn't take that long to deliver mail in the same state/city and I had given it plenty of time. They needed appointments which I didn't have, but still let me wait, so that's something. When I met with the clerk, she suggested that I wait a couple more weeks because my registration receipt lets me use it as proof of registration for a month. I did not trust that it would come in the mail. My first time, the clerk kindly reprinted my sticker for free. This time, it was a trainee who asked her manager and her manager instructed her to charge me the reprint fee of $6.50. My options were: 1. Wait 2 weeks for rest of my 30 days they give you to use your receipt as proof of registration and risk having to pay for parking and coming back here and get my sticker reprinted for free. 2. Pay $6.50 for a reprint of my sticker and not waste the time and $2 I spent on parking to come here. I chose to pay the $6.50 and not wait for the sticker which wasn't guaranteed to come. I was already here to finish an errand - why have to find time to come back? Guess what? It's November and I never received the promised sticker in the mail anyway so I'm glad I paid the $6.50 and got it done. read more

But, yet again, I had a pleasure meeting and chatting with the agent that I dealt with. I think if you bring your smile they can't help but meet you with the same. I definitely don't expect top tier customer service or any at all from a county affiliated office. However, when I walked in, I followed the sign that said check in at the desk next to the kiosk. So I walk up to the desk where there is an officer and one woman standing, whom I assume is waiting to finish checking in. After she walks off, someone walks up to speak to the officer as if I was not standing there. I wait patiently. One he's done, the officer just stares at me. I asked "this is where I check in?" He says "Yes." And nothing else...so I ask, did you need something from me? He says "what are you here for" and now I'm a little annoyed because this man has an attitude and I just started speaking to him. It's not like I missed a sign or anything, he just had an attitude, unprovoked. Now I'm irritated while waiting for my number to be called. I don't think it's too much to ask people working here not to be unnecessarily rude to people who are just trying to get paperwork done. We don't wanna be here either! read more

Very favorably impressed. The staff was exceptionally courteous, friendly and helpful from start to finish. I had an appointment but arrived forty minutes early; was immediately placed in the queue and waited on within fifteen minutes. I was missing a document and expected to have to go home and return, but the clerk helpfully suggested a suitable alternative, and the matter was settled expeditiously with no problems. One warning about the parking: Beware of the "Premium Parking" company across the street. They have a large sign advertising "12 dollars for 12 hours" (with no fine print) and that seemed reasonable given the location, but the actual charge was 17 dollars! read more

Pleasant experience! I came here to change my car registration to TX tags. Came on a Friday morning around 10am. Went inside and pulled a tag, and within 2 minutes they called my number. The process took ~10 mins. I ended up with my registration sticker and TX car plate as I left the office. The person was polite and the office/bathrooms were clean. At a govt building you can usually expect long waits, cranky employees and basically "the run around". I must say that even though I spent about three hours there yesterday, it wasn't the worst experience (other than the long wait). I went to have my vehicle registered and to receive my TX plates and sticker. My appointment was set for 11am. I got downtown and close to the building at 10:50 but I couldn't locate better parking than the $15 parking that's next to the tax office. Did I WANT to pay $15? Nooo but, I also didn't want to be circling around looking for parking downtown with all the one way streets etc and risk being late (I'm still learning my way around Houston so I didn't want to chance it). Once I entered the building, there was a temperature check person who took my temperature and then directed me towards some seating in the lobby outside the main office. You're instructed to wait there until the officer inside comes to collect you. I was seated for about 5mins before he came out, asked what I was there for and confirmed that my appointment was on the clipboard in front of him. He then told me, and the others waiting, to follow him inside. He gave us a number from the ticketing system based on what service we needed and told us to have a seat. I waited for a FULL HOUR before my number showed up on the screen!! Apparently, new residents are pushed way to the back of the line and always wait the longest. Many, many people ,some without appointments, came in after me and were seen and taken care of before me. I guess that's to be expected but, why? It's not like issuing new plates takes that long once you have all your docs ready. And here in lies my other problem. Once my number was finally called and I got to the counter assigned, there was a sweet young lady in training who checked all my documents. She told me my insurance needed to be updated because the payouts were, although fine for my state, not correct for TX. I was heartbroken! after waiting so long only to be turned away . But, She told me I could handle it and then come back later before the office close at 4pm. She said I could either get the policy changed to reflect the correct amounts or I could get TX insurance. I was determined not to have to leave and come back, I refused to let my $15 parking go to waste LOL. So I stepped outside and called my insurance company who took care of everything in about 20mins and switched me over to TX insurance. I went back in, I didn't have to do the temperature check again but I did still have to Wait outside until the officer came and got me. He led me inside and gave me a new number and the wait started all over again... another HOUR before I was called to a window. This is ridiculous! They should have a specific person who only deals with new residents OR a specific person who deals with people who are missing a document, leaves to take care of it and then comes back. That way, the person doesn't have to restart the process all over again ...they can go right back to the window, show the agent whatever was missing and then carry on. So, I waited another hour PRAYING that everything was right this time. Once my number was called I went up to the same counter as before which was great because I thought the young lady was very pleasant. This time, everything was fine, the rest of the process took about 10mins and I was done, I left with plates on hand! Success after a long day! I must say that despite the wait, everyone I dealt with was pleasant and knowledgeable. I really appreciated that. COVID PROTOCOLS -- ok, sooo we're in the midst of a pandemic right!? One that's getting worse daily right? Tell me why masks are not required in govt buildings!? Please tell me. The office did a great job of requiring the temp check and spacing out the seating (i guess we'll call it 6ft). But, we still had about 40% of customers still coming in without masks. Why!?! I was frankly appalled. This needs to change. There were people coughing and I was basically afraid for my life. I'm vaccinated but i never leave home or enter a public setting without a mask on, it's just disrespectful to everyone around you. I don't get it. When will be wake up? read more

After reading the reviews, It seems the Gods of luck have graced me with their fortune when I came to register my vehicle here last Thursday. Two blocks away I found metered street parking for $2 an hour and closer to the building their were several $5 parking lot's, So that worked well for me! Walked into the building and there was ZERO people in line :-0! Having moved from California doing this at any DMV, half your day is gone waiting in line! Covid changed how things get done but Harris County is still lost in the mix trying to renew tags or yet register a vehicle should not be this difficult. Not to mention you show up to ask questions masked and vaccinated and the security treats you like vermin. They refuse you entrance to a public building just to ask questions tell you it's online. Harris County doesn't have its act together online so it's worse for new citizens trying to pay bills or register vehicles. Why not put a sign up that says not wanted in our state. read more

Vehicle Registration: Got there at about 10:20 am on a Friday. No line. Was serviced immediately by a very helpful young lady. About 5 people came in after me and the wait was minimal for them. The whole process took about 10 minutes to register an out of state vehicle - partially because I'd downloaded the form and filled it out before getting there and I had all my paperwork organized and ready to go. Cost was $199 (eek!). Parking - I chose the $15 self-park lot directly across the street. Easy in and out. read more

Have paid my taxes via bank check and it's been stolen. Went to the branch and was to just pay it again and if it gets sorted out that I may get a refund or I can call the downtown location. I talked with the bank with the tax office downtown branch on the line to verify that the payments for the last few years has been sent and cashed by the tax office, yet my money hasn't been posted and penalties accrued. if this has happened to someone else contact me at ldlackland@gmail.com to start a class action civil suit. This type of conduct jeopardizes both mental and physically with the anguish and stress that it causes. read more

BRING YOUR CHECKBOOK!! If you can go to the Tax Office on Griggs Road instead, please do. However, I had to go to this location to file other paperwork. Generally it was an alright experience. I arrived at 7:45am on a Wednesday and they open at 8am. There are 2 lines- one for vehicle/title registration and a second line for commercial reasons. There were 5 people in line for commercial and I was the first one in line for title registration. When I left at 8:20, there still was no line. Treatment was the usual for a government agency. No smiles, all business, which is fine as long as the job gets done. PS if you are renewing your vehicle registration for the first time, you CANNOT renew online, must be at a tax office! The only annoying thing is parking downtown. If you're lucky and can find metered parking, that's awesome. Just make sure you're careful with time and follow the signs or your car will get towed. To play it safe, I parked in the parking lot across from the tax office. I paid $15 (flat fee, there's a parking lot attendant that watches all the vehicles, no in and out privileges, all day parking only until 730pm, credit card or cash). read more

Can you think of anything worst than standing in the line at the post office? (Raises Hand) I can name a place and thy name is "The Harris County Tax Office"! I had to come here and transfer over a title to my project car from the previous owner. I decided to come here on my lunch break. I parked and walked into the building and BAMMM! There is a line of 12 people ahead of me and its only 11:30am! Parking was easy to find but I only paid for a 1 hour of parking (enough time?). I dread coming to this office more than going to the postal office as the line here move so so slow. Hell I think I've aged just waiting in this line. Well at least they have a TV to watch as you waste away your life waiting to be called next. I scanned the clock every 10 minutes which only seems to make time go even slower. I finally get to the beginning of the line (40 mins later)! I felt like I won the lottery when I was called. The person behind the glass window was very professional, fast and efficient. I had all proper paperwork and I was done in less than 10 minutes. Total time at the Harris County Tax Office was 50 minutes. This makes me wonder why this line is so long. Is it because of the people in line or the people behind the protective glass? Hmmmm...... I saw this advertised on the TV before I left. - "Do this online, so you don't have to stand in line!" I couldn't do the title transfer online!!!!!! Tips: Come early before 11:00am and bring cash/check as they do not accept credit/debit cards! One hour should be sufficient to get things done at the tax office. Bring snacks at you might get hungry waiting in line. =) read more

Weird to have such high stars for a government office, makes me feel awkward. It can't be helped, as far as standing in line in a government office goes, this is my favorite. Weird to say. I have actually come here more times than I should. I keep trusting the hubby to renew our vehicles' registrations on time to where a trip to this office become unnecessary. Sadly, the last four times this has come up we have made a trip here, because "oops" missed the deadline. Every time we have been through it has been quick and easy with really great and friendly employees. Which has to be really surprising. The longest it took was about about 45 minutes but that was with about 20 people in line because we went during lunch, on a Friday. The shortest was 10 minutes with only 4 people in front of us. We were able to get lunch as well and not put any more money in the parking meter. My advice go on a Monday if you can. This seems to be the type of errand people put off until later in the week. I really don't mind coming here. We have tried to take care of things with their online customer service, which really don't waste your time with that. They never got back to you. One thing I learned is that if you have a lost Registration tag, it's only $7 for a replacement. If you want to take the Rail to the Tax Office, there is the Preston stop that drops you at their front door. If your parking I've noticed the easiest and closet spots to find are on the next block, Prairie in between Fannin and Main Street. If you think the employees here are unfriendly, which I have NEVER experienced, you should check out the people at the County Clerk's Office. When you get your Marriage License, man those people are depressed! read more

I don't really enjoy standing in line but the line here happens to move pretty fast if you happen to get in before 12PM. One thing that sucks about this place is you have to pay 5 dollars to park everytime you want to go here. I paid 5 dollars to park down the street, I stood in line for 30 minutes only to find out that because my Texas insurance was not active for 5 days they would not register my car in the state of Texas. What a waste. I will be going back for the third time next week to try and get my car registered in the state of Texas. Anyways I don't like doing bad yelp reviews so I am finished with this one. What do you expect, everyone that works here is rude and has a short temper. It's not as if I'm happy to be here myself waiting in line forever but at least I'm polite to the people that work here and I would expect the same in return. I came in to pick up some novelty plates for my wife's car and the woman who I had the displeasure to interact with was rude and not helpful at all, this should have been a quick in and out experience which turned out to be a 1 hour long nightmare! Having relocated to Houston from Honolulu, I had to start the process - again - of registering my vehicle. Every state is different. One would assume you register your vehicle at the DMV...not in Texas. You register your vehicle with the Tax Assessor's office. The first time I went I thought I had all the right paperwork. However, when I got there, I realized that I didn't have my previous registration...so I went out to my car to retrieve it from the glove box only to realize that it wasn't there. After my panic subsided, I realized that it was because I was instructed to remove it from the glove box before shipping it from Honolulu to the mainland...and it was in with my household goods which didn't arrive until almost 4 weeks after my vehicle arrived. So...finding my registration, I went back to the County Tax Assessor's office the next day. Typical state employees...bored, unfriendly, not particularly helpful...until the employee saw that my vehicle had been registered in Hawaii. Then, suddenly, she was much more interested in me...well it was more of "why on Earth would anyone leave Hawaii" type of conversation. Got my business taken care of and on my way. First, you must enter and pass a bunch of freaks who are there to go before the judge. Sketchy looking folk. Then, you must pass by the people waiting to pay for traffic tickets. Naughty, naughty. Finally, you can enter the Property Tax room with its long, insufferable line. There was a girl ahead of me who brought her on portable chair. I kid you not. She had a Blue Tooth hands free and chatted the entire time whilst occasionally getting up to move her chair forward. Fast forward 30 minutes.....I finally get to the window. I'm prepared to pay $350 for transfer of registration and taxes. Lady at window was a doll who was just the nicest. Was told only $177! I'm very happy. If you're thinking coming to the physical location to get your registration renewal for your vehicle so that you can save a little bit of money on the online fee, don't think twice and renew it online! For me, I figured the location was close to where I worked downtown and that I could come on a Friday and be in and out. WRONG. I ended up paying $2 for parking in which that machine doesn't give out CHANGE so I paid .50 cent more for an hour's worth of parking just to wait in line for 30 minutes to get my renewal. In the end, I was better off paying online because that $2 for parking AND wasting my time, was totally not worth it. Next time, I know better and so should you! :) read more
