I obviously don't typically write reviews for grocery stores but we stopped by here recently while running errands and were amazed with the friendly employees. We live in DC and came out here on a Sunday and were asked by pretty much every employee if we needed any help while they asked us how our day was going. Pretty surreal experience and great to see! Hope the store does well and that the employees know how awesome they are. Meanwhile you can't get home depot employees to get off of their cellphones while you ask them for help. Lets be honest, the quality of 90% of the grocery stores here in the DMV are subpar at best but when that's all you have it's like picking the best of the worst. I say this for two reasons, there is probably no one here who has shopped at Mariano (Illinois based and best supermarket EVER) and once you had the best all others fail in comparison. I went from shopping to 90% Marianos and 10%Trader Joes while living in Chicago to moving to Alexandria and shopping 80% Trader Joes and 20 % between Walmart, Whole Foods, Dollar Store, Harris Teeter and very rarely Shoppers. Since Safeway and Giant are a huge ripoff for it's poor quality I don't either step foot in either (plus they are the Jewel and Dominick equivalent in Chicago - so I already know the crap they put out in their stores) Its sad to travel to so may places for best prices or quality or just the fact you go into a store thinking they will have the item you want and don't. I cringe at the thought because it happens more times than not. In terms of this Harris Teeter, I am glad that they put one in this location because its closer to all the other stores I have to shop at for weekly groceries. In terms of quality and price, Trader Joe's beats out Harris Teeter about 95% time especially in the produce section. Now Harris Teeter (HT) does have great deals so I check out the circulars before I walk in but I have seen items in HT that are more than Whole Foods so watch your receipt. Also understanding that Trader Joes is a nitch store, you can't expect the selection of TJ's and HT to be the same in the aspect either. Overall, I do like this HT store. I haven't had any issues with Customer Service, the store is clean and has a nice setup. I like the energy saver freezer sections and of its location in relation to TJ's.When I am done shopping at HT I walk right up the street to TJ's and shortens my grocery shopping time. I do wish HT had a better fish/seafood selection (less farm raised please) but overall I will shop here on a regular basis and would recommend it (especially if you shop at the Duke st location- uggh) read more

brand spanking new. prices are not as good as trader joe's down the street, but i feel their produce, meats, poultry are much better, and on par with whole foods. also, they have red box, lottery kiosk, and open 24 hrs. also, parking garage is much easier to use than traders. read more

Shopped...or attempted to shop on 10/1/19 at 6:30pm. No carts, produce nearly empty and 100's of people waiting in line to checkout. Self-checkout line extended to back of store. Only 2 clerks at registers. Talked with an employee stocking shelves and she stated the management of the store has been replaced multiple times and it keeps getting worse. Suspect they have severe hiring and retention problems in a very tight labor market. It is a beautiful store in a great, central neighborhood. Just very poorly managed. read more

I am so happy to have this place next to my place. HT has everything, you can get a big variety of wine and beer. the Deli and Pizza are fantastic, not to mention the great salad and hot bar with very affordable prices and good food. I ove trader joes, but I am happy that I have the extra option, the Giant a block away must be afraid now. read more

Harris Teeter is a much needed addition to North Old Town in Alexandria. It's a big, new, clean store with all the features you might want in a neighborhood market. There is decent street parking as well as a free garage below ground. My favorite things? Hummus crackers from Firehook Bakery and yummy rotisserie chicken. Great selection of meats, fish, cheeses, wine, fruits, veggies, flowers, prepared foods including a hot food bar, fried chicken, pizza bar, and, tasty cakes and bakery items. Thursday night is "prime rib" night and they serve it at the front of the store, there is always a line of people waiting. The pharmacy is one of the best features, and, I highly recommend the Harris Teeter pharmacies because the pharmacists are so attentive, they go the extra mile to communicate with you. What I wish was different: The pharmacy is not 24/7, and, it has short hours on the weekend (that is my reason for 4 stars instead of 5). I also wish they had a Starbuck's and a better selection of health & beauty products - they don't carry my favorite conditioner...seems like they should have a bigger selection of beauty products since the store that is very high end and well-stocked. read more

What's not to like about HT? What a great addition to north old town! So what if TJ is down the street? I can go to both for all my grocery and alcohol needs. As most their other locations in this area, this store also does samples and wine tastings and a seating area (not the one on Duke) and wi fi. Plenty of aisle space and lots of choices including organic and gourmet foods. The personnel are friendly and helpful. Parking is ample both garage and street. And usually the customers are polite and nice. With the quality grocery stores that now exist east Alexandria, I dont have to go more than a few miles to quickly run out for eggs, cheese, or beer. Stores like these will kill the crappy no customer service grocery stores like shoppers. read more

Any place that serves food 24/7 is good in my opinion. I have weird hours and appreciate the mat fact. Any ways they do a great job there. I really like sushi so I always go over to that section. Thanks again guys!! read more

Have been going here since moving to the area. Surprisingly, it's not really a pleasant store to shop in. The staff is a little rough around the edges and a couple of times when I needed help finding something the answer was always "I dunno!" I was trying to figure out how to buy firewood over the winter and it took three people plus a manager to help me figure out how to purchase it. (they keep it in the parking garage and there's a whole complicated process to buy it.) They also have two different kinds for two different prices and when I asked what the difference was between the two they said, (you guessed it) "I dunno". The fresh produce is expensive and not well stocked. I bought daffodils here a few weeks ago and they died a day after they bloomed. Makes me think they were just sitting around without water for a long time after they came in to be stocked. Their fresh sushi is pretty good as is the quality of the food in the salad bar. Meat is expensive and again, a lot of the time it is hard to find what I need. The produce section is really not good. The potatoes for baking were all soft and you can never find all the fresh herbs you need. But my biggest pet peeve is the attitude of some of the check out people. Some of them will shoot daggers at you when you try to go on their line. And they move so slow you can hardly believe it. Management should really do something about that because it's so blatantly obvious that the check out people hate the customers. I really only go there when I have to. For the higher prices I'd expect more. I am just not a big fan of this particular store. There's something about it that's just "off". read more

Yesterday as all of Alexandria was trying to get ready for this blizzard about to hit us.. Harris Teeter of course was insane. The lines were all the way to the back of the store and I was thinking to myself, "shit what am I doing here". BUT they handled it amazingly. This is a Store that won't be any competition for Trader Joe and Whole Foods Way too much stuff, too many ails too much to choose from and it's all mostly junk. This store has the worst customer service of any market in the area. Deli staff prefers to chat amongst themselves rather than attend to customers. Often there are more staff than customers at the deli but one still must wait. The only reason to shop here is for the Boar's Head deli meats. Checkout is often a difficult experience at this store since most registers are generally closed. read more

Went into this Harris Teeter to get a Italian Loaf sliced. No one was there so the pizza guy called someone. I told her what I wanted and she said there is some over there already cut. I said I wanted to see mine cut. Had to tell her that three times. She finally said she would do it but I was messing up her bread count. She said that 3 times. Then the lady that should have been there showed up and told her there was some already cut over there. The first lady explained that I wanted to the one on display. Then they had a conversations between them about bread count and one said maybe should not cut bread and just let them wait to get it cut. The other one said we should cut the fresh ones and leave the stale one on display and see how they ass likes that shit. I'm sure that Harris Teeter has trained their employees to give better service than this and maybe these to should have a refresher or find a job at Giant because if don't expect this at HT. read more

I came into the store yesterday to get a flu shot. I'm sure veteran users of Harris Teeter pharmacies read that and go, "Well, that's your problem right there," because it was a miserable experience. I came in and was handed a form to fill out. I informed the pharmacy worker that I have a broken hand and I cannot write. She responds, "Oh, that's too bad," and walked away. I spent a few minutes trying to fill out the form, but it was super painful. 5 minutes later the pharmacist asked if I was done filling out the form. I replied, "As I told your coworker, I cannot write." She replied that she'd enter my information for me. 10 minutes later, she informs me that their system is down and that they can't give me my flu shot. This is the second time, with different insurance providers, years apart that Harris Teeter's system couldn't communicate with my insurance provider and therefore couldn't provide my flu shot. We were considering to move all of our prescriptions from CVS to here, but nuts to that. Obviously, Harris Teeter doesn't take their pharmacy business or customers seriously. read more

We had high hopes for this store but I am sorely disappointed. Although it's neat and clean, the deli service is terrible and we've gotten veggies that were spoiled (boxed arugula and baby tomatoes). The hot food is mediocre at best and the sushi is just ok. My husband knows his fish. He says the fish department is underwhelming. I think I'll make the trip toWhole Foods and make the gross Safeway my go to for staples. read more

This place is absolutely terrible. The staff does not know how to package groceries properly, and many of them are utterly incompetent. I had many issues with a recent experience at this store. The cashier did not ask for my Harris Teeter card info, and overcharged me for several things. He also started ringing up someone else's groceries in place of mine of which I had told him politely they were not mine, but he kept going...and with an attitude too! To make matters worse, I was bringing my groceries to the HT parking garage, and the individual who bagged my items overstuffed the plastic bag which apparently already had a hole in it. I had a Starbucks glass drink in the bag and when the bag tore as I was lifting it from the cart, glass flew everywhere and cut my foot pretty badly. Luckily enough for me, there was a young lady there who saw what happened and called for a manager. However, the management at this store are completely useless! It took them forever to come out to the parking garage to check on me. They were very unapologetic and lacked basic customer service skills. I told them that I was bleeding pretty bad, and they basically said "Well, what do you want us to do!?" That is not how you treat a customer!!! I filed a complaint with the company, which went absolutely no where... The beauty of Old Town and the Alexandria/Arlington area is that there are so many grocery options to choose from! I would highly recommend going elsewhere for your groceries! Don't be tricked by the "pretty" store. Whole Foods is pretty too and they are much, much better and classier! Just sayin'... read more

Everything you would want in terms of packaged foods, but I can never get all of my fresh vegetables there (always half empty vegetable shelves or half-rotten vegetables - especially the cucumbers) and the meat and seafood sections are sub-par. The only "fresh" salmon they sell is farm-raised with color added to make it look like good salmon so never going to buy that at HT. Yes, everything is well-priced for what you are getting. If you love frozen, canned, or boxed food this the place for you. Great place to buy staples for the pantry and almost as cheap as Cosco for toilet paper, but if you want fresh food do not plan on getting it here. Go a mile away and get it at another store. read more

Because this HT is the closest to us, we're probably here every other Saturday. It's an average store, decent garage, and they have some good sales if you have a VIC card. We had a bizarre experience today with a manager, Allison, and it could be a good teachable moment if anyone from HT scans these reviews. My husband and I were in a check-out line behind one other customer. From a few aisles away, an employee yells to us "we can take you on 7, come on, aisle 7." I couldn't see her, but I could hear her. We weren't moving fast enough for her so she hurried over to direct us to aisle 7. Her name tag read Allison. It was very strange because it wasn't a crowded or frantic store, and she was inserting unnecessary urgency -- we weren't in any hurry. So we were in aisle 7, and I asked the cashier to scan some cheese and look at a picture on my phone because the pricing wasn't clear to me ... And all of a sudden Allison was back at the end of the aisle. She snapped (loudly) at our cashier "you haven't even started yet?!" And our cashier said, with more calm than I would have, "I was just answering a question about a price." It was an unpleasant interaction and it left both my husband and I feeling uncomfortable for our cashier, who was a very professional, personable young lady. On our way out of the store a few minutes later, we heard Allison shouting at someone else to hurry. Maybe someone should provide this woman with some feedback -- her behavior is not helpful and in fact felt jarring to us. read more

I just used the on-line ordering feature offered by Harris Teeter. LOVED IT! I was able to order everything I needed and was also able to include my prescription medication pick-up. I drove up to the store, hit the button, and a couple minutes later a very nice girl loaded groceries into my car. Their food is always very fresh, the store is clean, and the employees are friendly and helpful. Oh...every thursday they have a prime rib with potatoes and veggies dinner take-out for $10. Nice clean grocery store and plenty of staff working at all times. Good beer and wine section as well. The only reason they're not getting five stars is because the folks at checkout don't know how to package groceries properly. They put heavy jagged items on top of fruit and veggies pretty much every time I go here, damaging my produce. Don't judge a book by its cover! This is one of the nicest Harris Teeter stores around with a huge selection of everything. That's the good news. The bad news is customer service. Today I went to buy some coffee that was on sale this week. There were no packages left on the shelf of the particular variety I was interested in, so I inquired at the so-called service desk. The young lady politely told me they have no stock and whatever is on the shelf is what they have. So I politely asked for a "rain check." She said sure, and then rummaged through two unkempt drawers hoping to find the rain check forms. Eventually she said she had to consult with her manager and I should come back in a few minutes. So 5 or 10 minutes later I returned and she told me her manager said there were no more rain check forms. So sorry! So I asked to speak directly to the manager who apologized and offered me a hand written note in lieu of the elusive form, something the customer service rep should have done at the outset rather than turning my shopping trip into such an ordeal. I understand perfectly well that grocery stock runs out, but this is the first store where stock ran out AND so did rain check forms. While the manager was most accommodating, someone was asleep at the switch in not maintaining these simple rain check forms in good supply. They're not perishable, after all. read more
