What I recommend: Avoid ordering cakes from this location We ordered a sheet cake from the Harris Teeter bakery for a veterans dinner this past weekend to celebrate and honor those who served. Unfortunately, what we received was extremely disappointing. The cake was poorly decorated and looked like very little effort or care went into it. When we brought it up to the baker, she brushed us off and said we could request a refund if we wanted, but that she wouldn't do anything to fix it. The event was only two hours away, and thankfully, the amazing staff at the Whole Foods bakery stepped in and helped us get cakes for 67 people with just an hour's notice. In Durham, our go-to Harris Teeter is on the one on 54, but we happened to be on Ninth Street eating at Juju so we stopped by this location to pick up a couple groceries before heading home. Based on my single visit to this location, it seems bigger and a little bit nicer than the Harris Teeter we normally go to. It also seems better stocked. We picked up a 10-oz box of Fresh Express 50/50 Mix of spring mix and spinach ($4.99) and a 48-oz container of Harris-Teeter-cut watermelon chunks ($5.00). It rang up to $10.19 after tax and using my wife's Kroger Plus membership (VIC customer), she got double fuel points for the month. The store was clean and on a Wednesday evening around 7:30pm, most of the clientele appeared to be Duke students. Not surprising considering Duke East Campus is just two blocks away. This Harris Teeter has both a Starbucks and a pharmacy inside. This is Harris Teeter store #394 and you can find it at the Shops at Erwin Mill at the corner of Hillsborough Rd and 9th St in Old West Durham. This is a relatively busy area. read more

This is a grocery store along with two or three others that I alternate. I love this Harris Teeter. I can always find what I need, and it's never really too crowded whenever I go. It is near a lot of other places too, which makes it an easy place to stop in and grab a few things if needed. There are quite a few restaurants around like Panera, Burger Bach, Happy & Hale, Jimmy John's, etc. It's also next to a Pure Barre, which is nice. They also have very good pizza! One of the Sbux employees (it's part of HT) said it would be fine to hang out after closing (because HT itself is 24 hrs) which it always was in the past and other grocery store locations of HT are fine with it, but no... the security guard for this HT had this big racial meltdown, threateningly raising her voice towards me, asking me where I was from, threatening the police 0 while also not kicking out some very caucasian teens that were being loud in the other corner. This used to be an amazing pharmacy when Olga worked here. She was a true gem. Since she left, the service here has become absolutely abominable. Prescriptions are slow to fill (often averaging more than a day) and will often have shifting time lines. Like, you place prescription on Saturday morning, you get a text that says that it will be filled Monday afternoon, then a text the filling day that it will now be filled on Tuesday afternoon, then they tell you that they are out of your meds and will have them "sometime soon". And even when they do have meds in stock, They will often roll their eyes, grown, or flatly refused to refill a prescription in the same day even with hours to go before the pharmacy closes. Or worst of all, I placed a prescription order on a Tuesday, and then tried to pick it up over the weekend and they said that they hadn't heard back from my Doctor's office to authorize my refill. I asked them how long it had been since they reached out to my doctor's office, and they said that they had reached out both on Tuesday and then again on Friday. Turns out that when I called my doctor's office on Monday, they had no record whatsoever of having been contacted by Harris teeter. II understand that there are tons of factors that are completely out of these people's control. But I've seen with my own eyes how this specific pharmacy can be run when it's staffed by people who are competent and give a crap. And that simply not what's happening right now. Bottom line, if you have the ability to get your prescriptions filled anywhere else, do it. Don't go here. read more

Truth to be told, after years...I've decided to switch grocery stories. I grew up shopping at Food Lion and I felt like it was the perfect time to make the switch. If I'm spending my hard earn money, I want to give it to a place that is able to give me good vibes and smooth shopping experience. This was life-changing and noticed the change right away. When I walked in, a worker greeted me and sanitized my cart. That was a great gesture. The store is clean and had everything that I needed. The vegetable section was neat and clean. The meat section had a fantastic selection. It's a huge store! Every time that I make a stop here for groceries, it's always been a A+ experience. The check-out process is fast. What's not to love about this Harris Teeter, other than perhaps its parking lot. It's a little jammed into the space and the entrance isn't the same as the exit, but you get over that and move on. Brightly lit, clean, organized, well stocked, friendly associates, it's awesome. The inside is larger than other HTs I've patronized and it looked great. This was my first time visiting this Harris Teeter. Parking was easy and they have a pleasant store front. It is modern and clean inside. They have a huge produce section. I looked at the bakery and nothing caught my eye. The prices here are higher than Walmart or Target. They have a large selection of frozen and fresh food. Welcome to a benevolent spaceship of food that has crash landed right into the campus area. When this location opened a few years ago, it was a welcome addition to Durham. It's bigger or cleaner -- or both -- than many nearby competitors. Earlier this year, when I was trying to make a crockpot roast, I couldn't find the right cut of meat anywhere until I came to this Harris Teeter. I keep coming back for the right type of chuck for Mississippi Roast. I didn't have the same luck, though, when I scoured the area for old school, full-flavor Michelob. I tried multiple grocery stores and hoped the beer cave here would yield that smooth macro brew -- but alas it didn't. A beer distributor rep I saw one day at the store says many stores are giving that shelf space to increasingly large stocks of Michelob Ultra. Still, there are many great features of this story. Compared to nearby Harris Teeter, Kroger and Whole Foods locations, I prefer the efficiency of the deli here when I need Boar's Head ham fresh off the slicer. They also have one of the biggest produce sections and bakeries around, and a huge imported cheese display. Overall, a close encounter with this grocery store should leave your fridge stocked with all kinds of staples -- earthly and otherwise. read more

Employee witness incident and mentioned to HT manager, Shane, that he would have cleaned up the area but he was not allowed to bring cleaning materials/tools. I love the fact that Harry Teets opened up on 9th Street. I've been a fan since the beginning and have to say, it's one of my favorite places to shop. The only downside is the smaller parking lot (although bigger than it's neighboring competitor Whole Foods) and lack of cart wracks in the parking lot. Otherwise, they've got it all. A great selection of produce: organic and local, a great deli and I love their fresh breads (p.s. the man that work in the bread department is absolutely fabulous!) They have samples on the floor and great customer service. A large wine/beer selection in addition to their whole bean coffees. Harris Teeter is nicer and pricer than other local options (such as Food Lion or Kroger) but less expensive than Whole Foods or Fresh Market. They have a great ethnic food selection and this particular store (as well as the location off of Shannon Road) offers a 5% discount to students--sign up at the customer service desk. They offer sandwiches and a salad/soup bar, both make for a quick dinner/lunch option. They also have a Starbucks in store as well as a Redbox kiosk and the store is open 24 Hours-a-day! read more

this place is HUMONGOUS!! finally a nice grocery store near me where i dont have to point out to the cashier that my vegetables are IN-ORGANIC and a billion dollars cheaper. the parking lot is big, but getting there off 9th street can prove to be a challenge during busy hours. The store itself is bright, clean, organized, and offers everything you expect from a grocery store. maybe it's been a while since i'v'e been to a new grocery store, but if you walk down the freezer isles, there are sensors that turn on lights inside the fridges! what a great way to save energy. Avoid this Harris Teeter on Friday and Saturday evenings. I waited at checkout behind students buying alcohol, some of whom seemed to be having trouble producing proof of age. Only two registers were open and both had lengthy wait times. I also don't understand why Harris Teeter seems to be unique among merchants who cannot scan my frequent customer card from a smartphone app like Stocard. It's a drag to punch in the dozen digits manually to recognize my VIC card and implies that Harris Teeter is technologically impaired. Wegman's is (eventually) coming and HT may not survive. read more

It's big, beautiful, clean, well-stocked and organized, and open 24 hours. The grocery pick-up and delivery services are great if you're in a time crunch, and if they ever mess up anything, they'll make it right. Why the star deduction? Things are stocked in the wrong place or are labeled incorrectly sometimes (I'm looking at you, pancake mix.), and employee efficiency is lacking. When the college factor kicks in, this store can feel so understaffed and chaotic that I'll leave and head elsewhere to avoid the hassle. My other complaint is that for having such a big beer selection (the beer cooler is its own aisle, plus there is a walk-in cooler), the beer selection isn't good. The corporate brands are well-represented, but the craft beer selection is lacking, especially considering what is available in the area from local and in-state breweries. This location could stand to take note of how the Charlotte-area locations handle this! read more

This is going to be a rather lengthy tale to explain why I've rated this store so low. But here's the TL;DR version: Their supplies are great but their customer service absolutely sucks. "Customer Satisfaction, register 4." "Customer Satisfaction, register 4." "Customer Satisfaction, register 4." You would think after three calls and an ever-increasing pile-up in the checkout line, someone would have given my poor checkout guy a little assistance, but instead he had to wander off and find someone himself, leaving the five or six of us lined up after the woman in front of me, tapping feet and rolling eyes. Perhaps if one of the five or six employees I saw standing around in front of the restrooms had been actually working, this situation wouldn't have occurred. But this was just at the tail end of a really bad experience that I had today. Now this store is very new, and perhaps they just don't have their act together yet, but I'm sorry to say this is not the only bad experience I've had at this particular Harris Teeter since they opened. Every trip has had some employee being slow, incompetent, or rude to me. But let's list out the things that happened today only: * I got there and immediately went to the Starbucks to get a coffee. The two employees there refused to make eye contact and when eventually they decided to recognize that I was standing there, they mumbled something unintelligible at me and kept doing what they were doing. I stood there a bit longer, and the person half-yelled the same thing at me like I was supposed to understand it the first time, and I still don't really understand what she said because it was some bizarre phrase, but apparently she was asking for my order. With no eye contact still. * I then went to the Customer Service desk to sign up for a new VIC card since my old one has gone missing. There was already someone waiting there, but there was no one working the desk. Eventually someone came up and asked what I wanted, and I explained that I wanted a VIC card, but that the other person had been there first. As it happens that person also wanted a VIC card. The employee pointed him to a notepad device where you could sign up for one. He started trying to use it, but was clearly having problems like inability to get his driver's license scanned, so the employee had to assist him several times. He acted like this was a huge burden and he didn't want to be helping. Then he got on the phone and turned his back to the man, who was again stuck in the process. I gave up and decided to do my shopping and come back. * I next encountered an employee at the bread station, where I asked to have a loaf sliced. This seemed to take an eternity. I don't know what's so hard about getting a sliced loaf into a plastic bag, but apparently this was some tremendous feat to this particular person. * I then went to the butcher station, where the guy working there didn't seem to know what any of the meats were. I told him three times that I wanted the bone-in pork chops, not the boneless one, complete with pointing several times at what I wanted. He also had to come around to the front-side of the case to figure out what ground chuck was. * Through the aisles, re-stocking was taking place, and there were at least two occasions when employees made an aisle impassible, and I had to turn around and go back in the direction I came from. * There was the aforementioned strange gaggle of employees milling around the restrooms, presumably on break. * When I did go back to the customer service desk to attempt to get my VIC card again, there was a huge line, and no employee present. Eventually I got to use the machine, figured out after a few tries how to get my drivers license scanned, and completed the entire sign-up process, at which point it required that an employee be present to put in their ID, and a countdown started until the action would time-out. I was getting very frustrated and no employee was to be seen who wasn't working a check-out register. As luck would have it, someone showed up about 30 seconds before it was going to time out and so I waved my hands frantically to get them to deal with me first even though I wasn't first in line, because of the time-out. Never thought it would be such an ordeal to get a damned VIC card. * When I did get to the check-out register, the lady in front of me needed something voided, which resulted in the calls to Customer Satisfaction over the loudspeaker. Clearly, Customer Satisfaction was absent. Also, the check-out guy rang something of mine up twice by accident, spent a few seconds trying to figure out what happened, shrugged and continued with my check-out. I had to point out which thing needed to be removed, thus saving myself 5 bucks. The store has a great selection, but this is the worst customer service experience I've ever had at a grocery store. read more

Harris Teeter provides a nice balance to the Ninth St area grocery options. Whole Foods takes care of the high-end, and Food Lion is a half a mile away for the low-end. HT isn't quite in the middle as they are pricey, but with the weekly specials, you can generally find a reasonable bill at check out. I agree with some of the other reviews on the staff. They seem to still be figuring things out even six months after opening. This can add time to your visit, so bring your patience or first look to see which clerks know the produce codes before getting in line. Trashy magazines at the registers provide relief from the potential wait. Produce is pricey but fresh with a decent variety. Meat Department is typical big chain American grocer, and they've got about every packaged food you'd expect. HT gets three stars as there's nothing which makes me jump for joy other than it's closer to my home than similar stores and easy to get in and out off, so they are getting my money now instead of the Kroger down the road. Given that Kroger has now purchased HT, I don't think they particularly notice my shifting habits on the bottom line. For an alternative, if you are up for five-minute drive try hitting Compare Foods on Avondale Dr. Produce section is amazing and the prices are excellent. Just head E on Club from Ninth. read more

This HT is my go to market. I love it. They have Starbucks, a pharmacy, a wonderful deli with Asian and salad bars, super friendly butchers, a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care items. The cashiers are always friendly and helpful, until today. So, based on selection and previous service I would have rated this store as a 5 (-.5 for minimal good Mexican food & -.5 for the unfriendly nasty lady at the self serve check out scanners today.) I walked up to the self serve area to check out. The checker lady was acting like we as customers were putting her out. She was just dragging her body and could not make eye contact. First I thought it was an issue with the customer in front of me. I walked up to the first available self scanner. The HT lady ordered me to use the other scanner and pointed to the scanner that the lady had issues with. So I did. It had issues with looking up the salad bar items and scanning make up. She begrudgingly came to my scanner, acting frustrated, unfriendly and as if she were put out, came over and put in the codes, and manipulated the scanner to scan my remaining items. Then she walked away. I pulled out my card to scan it. Hmm... I look at the card scanner and they have a sign that it only takes cash. Really? Why could I not use the other two scanners? Why she didn't ask me if I were to pay with cash or card before she told me to use that scanner? My small basket was full. Who carries $100 cash for groceries? She told me to go to her station, like she did with the lady infront if me. So, she is repeating the issue. It's a failure point and she repeats it. Now there are 6-7 people waiting in line. And 2 scanners not being used. She told me to go to her station. She took my credit card, and ran it at her station. I was prompted to sign on the card scanner. I tried it a few times and it did not work. She gets frustrated with me and told me to sign it. Really? I told her I tried several times and it wasn't working. She did something on her computer. She then used HER FINGER AND SIGNED FOR THE PURCHASE on the credit card scanner. Really? She just forged my signature with scribble signs. I was shocked! She did wish me a good day as she handed me my receipt. I've not encountered such a cold, begrudging person since I moved here to NC almost a year ago. This lady was downright unfriendly and rude. It was the worst experience I've had at this HT. And I do not believe she was just having a bad day. I think she's just put out by customers. Now, it is the only bad experience I have had at this location. Again, I do not believe she represents the other employees at this location. I've always had a positive experience from this site. As a side note, I would have to disagree with another reviewer about having great ethnic options. I had a hard time with getting 75% of the items I needed to make good enchiladas. I must say, now that I live off-campus, HT has been there for me when I needed it. It's open 24 hours which is really convenient because sometimes I get inspiration at 11:30pm and want to buy some ingredients. However convenient it is, I feel conflicted with this chain giant smack dab in the middle of Ninth Street... There's also a Starbucks inside, the produce seems fresh enough, and everything is nice and clean. They have a pretty good selection of organically grown produce but why not just go one block to Whole Foods for that? It looks like there is also a Panera opening in the plaza as well as the relocated Duck Shop. read more

Bought some sweet potatoes last weekend. Went to scrub them for baking the day after I bought 'em, thought they looked slightly off. Actually, the huge display of them at Teeter looked a little off (dirty & a little pale for my liking). However, these dirt spots turned out to be black mold. I only realized this after cutting them open to find them all totally rotten inside... I guess they need to cycle out their produce & not put old sh*t on display. That being said, the store is big, clean & new looking. So I am a little confused by this experience. read more

I came in on a week night at 8:40 JUST for the salad bar. When I get to the salad bar there were no tongs for me to make a salad. I walked around trying to find someone to ask for tongs so I could make a salad before 9 pm (when they closed). I finally find an employee, she tells me to ask someone in produce for tongs. I walk over to produce & one guy was sweet and gave me tongs to make my salad. Another guy had the nastiest attitude saying "people are so rude" and mumbling other words under his breath as he slammed the salad & toppings on the cart he used to put the items away for the night. I needed to send a money to New York I asked this customer service Rep , do you have a Western Union I was rudely told "we don't call it that"! before I could ask whether I could wire money to New York here, she walked away. I just moved to NC this past week. My experience at Harris Teeter was great... until I got to the deli. The manager Casey was the one serving me and constantly got distracted with helping other people there. I sat and slowly lost patience as 7 other people walked up and were served. I got a total of 1.5 lbs of deli meat/cheese and waited nearly 20 minutes for it. At first I chose two stars but as I continued to write I realized that was too generous.
