OMG! The Fresh Market is amazing! For some reason I feel like we had one in the Sacramento area, but it didn't last it sure should have though. This grocery store has so much to offer and more on the higher quality end which I love I would rather have quality over quantity any day. The service from the staff is absolutely impressive and they are so helpful and informative. The store is so clean and organized. The produce is so fresh and the meat counter everything looks so fresh and doesn't have that funky smell that some grocery stores have. Packed groceries in a haphazard manner. Didn't hand me receipt until after i struggled to pull it out of register. The FM has been a consistent store with fresh food made on the premise and incredible desserts. I wanted a panini as I've gotten them before. I ordered a Rueben panini and it was a tad dry and the bread was not as fresh as I would have liked. Maybe it was due to the time of day I ordered the sandwich? The Fresh Market in a nutshell: Unique, quality products. Helpful, friendly staff. However, selection is a bit limited when compared to a competitor like Whole Foods. My wife, who does most of the grocery shopping and cooking for us, likes to stop by The Fresh Market usually on her way home from the hospital. As a UNC Health employee, she gets a 10% discount at the store, which is a nice little benefit and added incentive for us to shop here. I think anyone with a college ID, whether student or employee, is eligible for the discount here. Shopping at The Fresh Market is a classy experience. For me, I think a lot of it has to do with the jazz music they play while you shop. The stores also have a relatively "upscale" and elegant feel to them. Very unprofessional and disrespectful! After I paid and got my receipt, I got a phone call. Meanwhile, the cashier just went away to chitchat with her colleague without putting the items into a bag and handing them over to me. Distracted by the phone call, I went out of the store without my purchased items. Luckily I stood outside the door to finish the phone call and realized I forgot my stuff. So I went back and found nobody is next to the checkout station--the lady was still chatting. My items were just right there on the counter so I said "Excuse me. I forgot my items." The lady said "You did!" with a laugh and went back to chat, so I had to pack up all the things myself. Overall the store is very similar to Whole Foods. I would rather check out on a Whole Foods' speechless self-checkout machine rather than deal with a cashier like that lady. I'm really worried about the future of this store if their stuff is this unprofessional. read more

I dunno about this place. I'm perplexed. It has the look and feel of a sprouts with a touch of whole foods, but it really falls flat in a lot of ways. I kinda want to give it 2.5 stars, but I'd rather go up half than down half on this one. I'm from California, so I'm accustomed to overpaying for a lot of things, but this was disappointing. These are Whole Food prices, but at times, the quality you would expect from a Food Lion. I was working remotely, so I had to keep to California hours. A few days I hopped over here to try to grab something easy for dinner and no luck. All the hot food was already put away and they have a very meager frozen food selection. By the third day, I finally asked and they told me they usually start putting food away and hour or so before they closed. So, I had to go there around 3pm (lunch in CA time) to pick up dinner and then reheat it. On that note, they do have a pretty good deal on their roasted chicken dinner. $14.99 for a whole chicken, 2 sides of your choice and corn bread. Plenty of food and when you get it fresh, it's yummy. Some of the chickens look like they're dry from sitting out for hours under the heat lamp, so make sure you get one that's fresh. Apparently, sometimes their chef or cook just makes up sides and puts them out without a label--it's kinda like a grab bag side. I was feeling adventurous and tried it out. It was pretty good. I still have no idea what it was--was it risotto? Stuffing? Some sort of pudding? I dunno, but it was tasting, so there's that. Every time I went by there they were always out of a lot of items. One day there were no salad mixes and another they had very little in their bread selection. Looked all over and no chilled pickles. Weird since they have a deli section. I picked up some of their pre-packaged deli meat and when I went to make a sandwich the next day, it was slimy. Gross and couldn't possibly have been that fresh, which was disappointing. Lastly, one time when I was checking out, the tellers were talking to each other about the new Wegman's that was coming to town and they were very excited about it. Strange to be talking up a different grocery store to customers. This was across the street from the hotel we were staying at, so it was convenient. If I lived in the area, this would not be my market of choice, but sometimes convenience wins. read more

WE just purchased a "French "vanilla loaf cake. It may have been the worst cake of its type I have ever eaten. It tasted a bit artificial and chemically. Well no surprise. It was made with soybean oil, not butter: it was made artificial vanilla as well as artificial vanillin, and lots of stabilizers, preservatives etc. I thought FRESH MARKET stood for FRESH, not shelf stable. I will be very Caereful WHAT Manufactured items I will buy here going forward. IF you are going sell FRESH, deliver FRESH. I'm giving them four stars even though I don't shop here often and find their prices to be generally on the high end. However, I like the size and feel of the place and it's usually very clean. They have a bulk section, good seafood and meat, coffee, bakery, wines, deli, sushi, flowers, etc. They do carry some items that other stores don't, and are usually very efficient with check out. On Tuesdays they offer good prices on ground beef and chicken breasts. They'll occasionally have good deals on other products as well. They fill a good niche in the area and have their fans, as you can see by the reviews. read more

This place confuses me. It really, really, REALLY wants to be fancy. There's fancy music, fancy floor, fancy prices and even some fancy nuts and chocolates and salts and dried veggies. That's pretty much where it's then like a selectively stocked Harris Teeter with higher prices. What it does have going for it is just a few more things than a generic grocery like bulk nuts and such. But it's no Whole Foods or A Southern Season. I forgot all about The Fresh Market until my friend offered our dogs the T-Bones from their steaks. They were huge! Of course, I had to ask where she bought them ... and there is where my love affair with The Fresh Market began! I HATE grocery shopping, but I love shopping here. The lighting in the store is perfect in that it isn't those obnoxious fluorescent lights, it's low-key and comforting. The store is organized, clean, fun to browse through (I can't believe I'm saying that about a grocery store). The produce department is simply beautiful. The meat department is huge and have some of the best steak I've eaten. While some items are more expensive, some are the same price, and when they have specials, it's a better price. Particularly when you think about the quality of the food you're purchasing. They have a weekly Little Big Meal for $20.00. It's an entire meal for 4 people, and we have loved every single one so far. It's truly an amazing deal! They offer a 10% discount for those affiliated with UNC! Nice! On Saturdays, they create a theme for a tasting event, and it's a fun time to try out new ideas and recipes. I could go on and on about all the things I love about this place. read more

I can safely say that this store is really great! After a loud, chaotic, and migraine-inducing visit to the Whole Foods yesterday, my experience at The Fresh Market today managed to calm my shopping nerves. To start, my total bill was a very reasonable $52 considering the high quality ingredients that I purchased. I bought a large selection of fruits and vegetables, half-and-half, and a whole chicken. With the chicken, the butcher even agreed to cut out the back bone to, which will aid me in my attempt to butterfly the chicken on the grill tonight. The layout and decor of the store are terrific. Instead of a loud pop soundtrack and lighting that facilitates glaucoma, the store opts for a blend of classical music and a dimmer level of brightness for a quieter and more relaxing experience. All the items are organized in a logical fashion, making them easy to find. In addition to all of the benefits above, the store is never overly crowded, making this the most relaxing grocery store experience that you'll find in Chapel Hill. Although the available selection of products isn't massive, it is still reasonable, and contains many products that can't be found at the other local markets. The prices are typically a little high (I sort of lucked out today in that department), but the available quality almost, if not entirely makes up for them. The only minor hiccup that I had with the store today was with the cashier. She was friendly and all, but decided to put a bag of heirloom tomatoes underneath 2 trays of corn and half-and-half, so when I arrived home, one of the tomatoes was a little bit squashed. The rest of the staff was friendly and helpful, so I can easily forgive such a tiny mishap. Overall, I implore you to check this place out. You can't beat the quality on display, and even though it's a bit pricey, The Fresh Market earns 4 stars out of 5. read more

Fresh Market is a great shopping experience in the sense that's it a very well-laid out store with a nice environment- the look, smell, and feel of the place are very serene and enjoyable. What disappoints is the groceries themselves. There are very limited organic/local/fair trade/vegan options, and yet the prices are still pretty high. You'll find a lot of the same products as a normal grocery store for a lower price. As nice as the feeling is when you walk into a Fresh Market- it's not worth of it when you can't find the products you want at a reasonable price. I don't know how this store is going to survive the expansion of Whole Foods and Trader Joe's- it seems like they depend on wealthy customers who don't really care about price or the ethics behind the products. I don't fall under that category, so I give it a two-star rating. read more

Smaller upscale grocery store with nice ambience. As the prices are quite expensive, it's not a place to do your weekly grocery shopping, but for specialty items like prepared meals, wines, chocolates, and other treats, it fills a niche. They have a fabulous smoked mozzarella from their cheese counter, and their baked goods look delicious. Don't miss their annual holiday sampling event in November - they offer tastes of a delicious turkey dinner complete with all of the fixin's (crab dip and lox, turkey, gravy, cornbread stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, ham, eggnog, pies, and more). read more

I shop at this store almost daily. The produce and meat departments are excellent (thank you Alex and Chen), superior by far to Harris Teeter, who frequently charges higher prices across the board. Special sale days, like chop meat and boneless chicken breast for $2.99/lb. every Tuesday, can't be beat. I recently checked the price of Pomi chopped tomatoes at HT and FM and they were a dollar less at FM. FM is currently having a sale on crab cakes: 2/10 ultimate lump and 2/5 Maryland style. Both are far better than HT's offering, and the Maryland cakes are cheaper than HT's regular cakes with much less filler. I also recommend the Italian sausages and ready to cook meatloaf at FM. They've recently added more grocery items making it more appealing to shop in one place. I'll never quit Trader Joe's, and there are a few things, like bread from La Farm (local) at WF I can't live well without, but this store is my go to for every day convenience and value. Follow the weekly/monthly specials and you'll be surprised how reasonable shopping here can be. It's also calm and serene after a hectic day. So much more conducive to meal planning than harsh lights and surly customer service staff. Cashiers are very caring... Tamara happily went way out of her way to shelter us under a market umbrella recently during a downpour out to our car. Actions like that go a long way toward keeping me as a loyal customer. read more

Beer awesomeness! Fresh Market is really cool. They have lots of great foods, fresh meat, awesome chocolates, and a nice selection of fruits and other foods. What I'd like to talk about today though is the Choose-Your-Own 6 pack for $8.99. So for $9, I can choose among their loose beers and find a wide variety of interesting possibilities: I can make a six pack of a German Octoberfest beer (particularly the crisp Beck-like ones... and you can get Beck's too!), a dark Chocolate Stout, and 4 other beers, and pay $9 for it. I like this. If I want both Tecate and Sierra Nevada, I'm going to get both Tecate and Sierra Nevada, and then buy a pear cider because that sounds really good at the time. So yes, I'm a fan. read more

Hands down, this is my absolute favorite grocery store to shop at! While I live in Durham, I do not mind driving 30 minutes to this Fresh Market location. This is literally the only place where I will get fruit from, because it is so fresh. Another reason why my husband and I primarily shop at The Fresh Market is because of their meat department. I work until 6:00 each day, so by the time that I get home, the last thing that I want to do is cook! Their meat department is a godsend because they prepare delicious turkey burgers (my favorite!), kabobs, breaded pork chops, and coconut chicken tenders! The meat is always flavorful and of course FRESH, which makes me feel good about what I am eating. Walking into The Fresh Market, it is to be understood that it isn't a Food Lion or Kroger, so naturally the food will have a higher cost margin. Usually on our higher trips we spend up to $150, but on our lower trips we have spent $60-$70, which is certainly reasonable for two people. But because it is a smaller store, usually the staff is more friendly (maybe because they aren't as stressed out?) and there are usually no crowds whatsoever, which makes me happy! read more

I've been shopping here for about two years and always found the staff to be friendly, the produce and meats to be fresh, the butchers helpful, and the products to be good. In short, we like it; but, today exceeded all the already high expectations. If you haven't shopped at Fresh Market, give it a try....you'll like it. The Fresh Market just opened up in the old location of Harris Teeter in Glenwood Square. It is a welcome addition to sea of Harris Teeters in the Chapel Hill area. It's like a market you might find in Europe, with fresh meat, poultry, produce, and dairy sections. The staff is more knowledgeable than at your average grocery store, and they seem to be passionate about what they do. The prices are a little higher than you might see at a national chain, but are worth every dime. read more

To call this a scaled down Whole Foods is an understatement. It is very small, very limited and very pricey. E.g. $1.00 for a kiwi. Fine to pick up a necessity if you are traveling but I wouldn't put it on my home shopping rounds. Other stores do it better. The pre made foods look old and crusty. This was before noon. Presumably fresh? I think you would be better off at Kroger. They have a fresher, healthier selection. Most of these were over loaded with mayonnaise and or cheese. The sushi looked suspiciously old as well. The employees must have been told to make an effort to be helpful. They yell hello to you at an uncomfortable distance where it kind of feels awkward and contrived. I really like mom and pop neighborhood fresh market stores. This is not one to go to. read more

I haven't logged into Yelp for almost a year, but I had to give a quick review of this place based on my first visit, which concluded about 20 minutes ago. But first, a little backstory. I am a cheapskate graduate student who doesn't treat herself all that often. But after finishing my last semester-long project this afternoon (five days early!), I figured I deserved a little reward. I love food, so my rewards of this ilk generally tend to be food-based. Having already thoroughly explored Southern Season and being familiar with Whole Foods, I thought I'd hit up Fresh Market for some cheese and crackers to celebrate my awesome day. Well, the selection is fine - whoever said below that it's a baby step up from the Harris Teeter gourmet aisle is spot on - but the customer service was abysmal. I am not a high-maintenance customer. All I require is some kind of acknowledgment of my existence when I'm doing things like hovering by the cheese case trying to pick something, and a polite hello/how are you/have a nice day at the cash register. I experienced neither of these at Fresh Market, and as a matter of fact the woman who rang up my order was outwardly rude. She couldn't be bothered to pause her conversation with her colleague long enough to say anything to me other than my total before I swiped my card, and acted like my being there was a total inconvenience to her. I can get the same products elsewhere for the same price or better, AND get treated politely, AND support local business while doing so if I shop at Southern Season. Fresh Market gets one star for ambiance and one for selection, but I know I won't be going back. read more

This is definitely an upscale grocery shopping experience if ever there was one! Fine classical music playing in the background, nice open spaces and dim lighting....almost makes you feel like you're on a date with the grocer. Then the date ends to a screeching halt as you check out and receive your bill. Like a bad date gone wrong, I find the prices a bit high for what you get - chips, fresh veggies and fruits are typically more expensive than Harris Teeters (which isn't the cheapest to be had) and the quality is hit or miss for the price you have to pay. The selection is good for the location (much better gourmet items to be had here than the next closest thing - HT) and the bakery and deli make some delicious meals-to-go. The ready to go sushi is better than your garden variety sushi-to-go at other places....but it's still sushi-to-go. i also like their bulk bins - they carry a small assortment of candies and dried veggie snacks. Personally, I think the cheese selection at A Southern Season is much better and Fresh Market doesn't seem to have very many local sourced cheeses. AFAIK, they are the only store I've found locally that carries Intelligentsia coffee beans (they have their own Fresh Market blend, no less) which are sold in those nifty bright red one-way valve bags. Of course, it's prolly better to just order from Intelligentsia directly if you want the freshest possible beans....or just go to A Southern Season to get the CCC beans at their freshest (Tues and Fri). The one saving grace is their sale prices. Sometimes they're pretty good and you can pretty much get items at or slightly below HT prices. The best time to check out this place is on the weekend when the samples are in full swing. Yes, this is a "gourmet" grocer....so, just be prepared to pay "gourmet" prices. We actually like them and they're conveniently located for us, but the price is always a bit off-putting. Regardless, good location if you're in the Oaks/Glen Lennox area and want something besides your standard HT fare or hippy organic stuff from WF. For me, Fresh Market is a solid 3 - 3.5 stars. read more

I love The Fresh Market. The Fresh Market is a corporation started in Greensboro, NC in The 1980's. This place is more of a grocery store kind of like Whole Foods or Trader Joes with very high prices and some very select specially made products or hard to find items. The Fresh Market does sells fruits, vegetables, cheeses, wine, beer, dairy, candy and all different kinds of meat protein. The also sell nuts and cereal and snack mixes by bulk. And just like any other grocery store some items in the store will be lower priced to get you in the door. And The Fresh Market does indeed have a few items that are reasonably priced to be comparable with other stores. I have noticed the salads and many deli products are equal in price to Kroger or Harris Teeter but better than Whole Foods and fresher. Just like other grocery stores many prepared foods for sale. Because the prices are high here I would recommend to buy your fruits and vegetables at the local farmer's market and other basic items like bread and milk. If you've exceeded your daily limit for hipsters and hairy women, skip the Whole Foods and hit up the Fresh Market. Good layout, excellent selection of fresh produce and meats. Initially had some issues with stocking basic items (I'd rather not have to make a second stop just for paper plates and aluminum foil), but they are stocking more of these items now. They have to change the store name. I've driven by this place countless times over the last year and half dismissing it to be another depressing store with minimal options for produce. I finally wandered in after much encouragement from a trusted friend. I loved the place, right down to the wood-plank floors. I found the prices to be comparable to Whole Foods but with a cozier, enjoyable atmosphere where you aren't crashing into every mamma dashing through the sample stops. The place to go for beautiful fresh flowers! I love the calming atmosphere of Fresh Market - low lighting, peaceful music, and natural displays. The Fresh Market is a great respite from your normal big, box grocery store. In addition to the best selection of fresh flowers at terrific prices (think $10 for roses, $15 for lilies), they also have a great selection of fresh produce, meats, bakery and prepared meals. While this may not be your regular grocery store (items can be pricey), it's a nice change of pace for when you're looking for a break from your normal grocery store and in the mood to treat yourself. read more
