The place is old and a little run down looking. It has limited options because of the size. That's where the bad news stops. The meat department is so much better than any chain grocery store. You're going to get better quality meat where the meat texture is right. They have spices, vegetables and other commodities. The staff is very friendly. There are a few tight spots. So you will have to navigate around the local morons that can't seem to see you're waiting to get through. read more

This is a great little old-time grocery store with a real butcher and friendly staff. Not that other supermarkets don't have a butcher, but the quality and offerings of the meat here is usually better, we've found. We've especially enjoyed the ground pork and the sausage we've gotten here. The place is not huge, so don't expect a humongous variety -- but they do have the staples and good produce in the side room. They do have local products but not everything is local, so just read the labels. We're not in this part of Durham often but will pop in now and then. read more

Can't believe it took me so many years to check this place out, even though I've always heard so many good things about them! Nonetheless, finally did and it's such a great "old school" grocery store. First off the friendliness is amazing. There's sure a lot of regulars they know by name and will call out to them, but even a first timer like me got a warm greeting. There's a personal feeling that you just don't get at a chain store. I really enjoyed going up and down every aisle not knowing what might be around the next corner. Yes, of course they have the typical items found in most grocery stores, but there's also brands I'd not seen before and lots of local items like honey, jams and jellies, sauces and more. Holy crap-spackling, singing angels, do you hear the deliciousness??? No, really, you need to shop here, they've been around forever, and are still open for a reason. The butcher shop, alone, is worth checking out this place. Last year, my wife and I shared our first Christmas together as a family, and were presented with a cooler filled with meet from King's Red and White, and it was the hit of the holiday. We immediately wrapped each packet in 3 - 4 layers of static cling and placed them in the freezer, except for the steaks we kept out for immediate consumption, and those rib-eyes were beyond heavenly. Additionally, the well wrapped and frozen items kept exceptionally well, and with no freezer burn. While I don't necessarily suggest buying in bulk and then freezing your meat from King's, you will be more than thrilled with the fresh stuff. GO, GO AND BUY NOW!!!! p.s. - it's a locally owned spot, so, spending money here just feels better! read more

Everytime I go to Kings, I remember how much I love it and I vow never to frequent a big chain grocery store again. First. The staff is so *so* friendly. We often chat with the owner and have a nice conversation at the register. It's got a family vibe. Like other people have said, this store feels much more like a market. You can get great (cheap) produce, and they always have a ton of local products - cheese, honey, candy, etcetera. And the meat is always great and very well priced. They definitely don't have all the frills and household items of a major grocery chain... But that's not why you're going there. You're going there for some good groceries at good prices, and great old fashioned customer service. read more

My Grandpa shopped here back in the 60's. It's a hole in the wall that I've driven past my entire life until now. As you approach this old establishment, do not be fooled. They have an "A" with the BBB and take their groceries very seriously! They have the best butcher I've ever met. Them Durham boys take their meat cutting VERY SERIOUS! I got the most beautiful 2" porterhouses, Dillard's BBQ sauce, hoop cheese that melts in your mouth, homemade peanut brittle, Brunswick stew, and the best of all... pickled eggs. Yes, I bought a jar of pickled eggs. All I can say is a person should try them before passing judgement.. There are so many others great finds here. They make their own candy. They carry local dairy and veggies. If you live or driving through Durham, this is a must stop. It's right off of 85, so there's no excuse. Now I can't wait to go home and eat an egg.... read more

I was in the need for a few veggies & fruits and instead of running to the chain grocery store, I stopped into King's and I'm so glad I did. Honestly, I was in a rush, so I went in and to the produce department and checked out - all in less than 10 minutes (that does include travel time from my house too!) I like this place. The produce was all phenomenal and if not right at the same price as a major grocery store, it was all cheaper than I usually see. Plus, I had a much easier time of finding fresh food instead of weeding through all the older stuff trying to find something fresh. And the people are friendly. And if you're concerned (as this was one of my major ones before visiting this place) you can use your Mastercard or Visa to pay for stuff - there's no minimum purchase required. Love it. I've heard great stuff about the meat and store itself, so I'll have to go back and see what it's all about. But for a first time experience, I very much liked the place. read more

This is a great little store and butcher shop. They do have a variety of meats that you cannot find in other grocery stores and the prices were a lot cheaper! I want to make beef Wellington this coming weekend but didn't want to spend a lot of money on a beef tenderloin/filet mignon, so I asked the butchers what they recommended and they are both very helpful and gave me tips to make sure it will turn out well. Fingers crossed it does... Trying tomorrow! They have a great variety of local fruits and vegetables as well and other local products which I love. I will deathly be coming back here for meat and veggies, especially when I can't get to the farmers market that weekend for the vegetables. Cashiers very friendly and efficient. King's is a darling little neighborhood grocer. The staff is SO friendly and immediately struck up conversation when I walked in. They recognized me the second time I came in, which is refreshing. Small, so naturally it does not have the selection of a big supermarket, but it's the perfect place to stop in for a few things or for some fresh produce. I got some watermelon and it was divine. Next time I need to check out the ice cream display- it looked pretty impressive. read more

King's is an actual market. It's got real southern flavor and it's stocked with local goods, they have a huge selection of BBQ sauces and the largest selection of canned meats I've ever seen. Been shopping here for many years...first during late 1960's and 1970's, and again since returning to the area in 2008. I grew up in a small family grocery store and meat market, making a trip to King's Red & White almost a trip home! Great produce and meats...whatever you want cut, they'll do it. Freshest goods in town! Surprising items on each aisle....cookies, sauces, honey, frozen items....old-time hoop cheese, made-in-house items (pimento cheese) and friendliest service in town. This is like a trip back in time, to simpler shopping and better products. Give them a try. They don't have the range of products that the big stores have; but what they have, they do a terrific job on. read more

A cute little local grocer. R&W stands out in the products it carries, which normal grocery stores don't. Want green tomatoes? Got it? Local vegetables? Got it. Molasses? Got it. The meats are a bit pricier than the chain stores, but the vegetable prices are comparable. There's also a greater (certainly more eclectic) selection of vegetables. One downside is that there's no place to lock a bike, but bike racks are a rarity in Durham. read more

What a neat grocery store. It's tiny, almost like stepping back in time. The selection isn't as big as current grocery stores, but honestly, it seems easier and quicker to shop here. King's has a great concentration of local goods, like jars of every imaginable pickled item. As a Yankee, I was surprised to see pickled watermelon rind, but my husband assures me that this is a delicacy in Durham. I find their produce selection just right. It's not overwhelmingly large, and I was assured that most things are local. The prices are great too, Green bell peppers for .79 cents a pound. The meat selection is fantastic, fresh and moderately priced. Their breakfast sausage is the best I've ever had! read more

From the moment you walk into King's, you feel welcome. You're always greeted with a big hello from the cashiers at the front, and by the time you check out you've had a full conversation with at least one of them. It's just a great feeling to buy groceries from a locally owned business, one who's been around for over fifty years. While they don't have ALL your normal items, they have the majority. And there are so many great local items: including bread, coffee, beer, honey, hoop cheese, milk, produce, etc. The meat is always fresh, butchered right there at the store. And the prices are very reasonable, especially to be local stuff. Love this store! The staff is very friendly and will help you find anything you need. They have the mix to make your own ice cream at home. They have spaghetti squash, canning jars, sure-gel, great bbq sauces, local beers, hard cider, great produce such as fresh brussel sprouts, local grass fed beef, oysters in the shell, and even cluster raisons on the vine. We go at least once a week. They have Mapleview Farms milk, butter and ice cream with easy bottle exchange. They have Ninth St Bakery bread and pastries and Counter Culture coffee. They often get in very fresh fruits and vegetables from NC farmers. Local/fancy beer is the newest addition. Also delicious jam, honey and salsa.The owners are almost always there and are very amenable to suggestions. Going to King's has basically reduced my trips to Kroger to about once a month or less. read more

I heard about this store when I was complaining to someone about how I was never able to make it the farmers market and needed to buy fresh produce and meat. The person suggested that I try Kings and I did. What a pleasant surprise this little store is. I'm one of those people that doesn't do well with lots of options and likes to get in and out of the store. This place suites my needs! The meats and produce are fantastic also make sure you try their palmetto cheese with their fresh tomatoes on a piece of toast, it to die for. They also sell Mapleview ice cream which is my new favorite. All the glaciers are out of this world and knowing that the cows that produce the milk are from right down the road in Hillsborough... Bonus. The customer service is great and they make you feel right at home. My boys got tootsie pops just for helping me with the groceries. read more

Their produce department is the great for local seasonal veggies, such as mustard and creasy greens. Their watermelons are great and cheap (in season, of course). You can load up on local eggs, milk, and beer. The meat selection is not bad, either, though I usually go for the veggies. Love stopping by here! I usually combine a trip here with a visit to Compare Foods, just around the corner, which is better for things like limes, chilis, and tropical fruit. read more

i would love to support a mom & pop owned grocery store which is why i ended up here. what a disappointment. the shelves are largely filled with standard processed food items, the produce selection was unremarkable, and the meats looked as if they were packaged a decade ago and have been sitting in the same spot ever since. i don't get the positive customer service reviews either. neither the cashier nor the bag packer bothered with as much as a "hello". rude. read more

Usually I have had very positive experiences at King's Red & White super market but today, I experienced a most upsetting dialogue with the woman cashier today 09/26/18 at 12:27 pm. I was encouraging the young man who had just come in from a smoke, to quit smoking to avoid COPD. The woman waiting on me abruptly & loudly entered into our conversation and was rude and aggressive arguing what about non-smokers who die of cancer! As I was getting my receipt, I told the young man, that I was only looking out for him. I told the woman that she didn't need to be so mean toward me, I wasn't even talking to her. That interaction could have turned very negative, but I left as she was still hollering at me. She was abusive toward me and I will not be shopping at King's Red & White Supermarket again. Our local grocery store is fantastic. It's not much on speciality items because it's small, but it carries all sorts of local fresh food. They have a satisfying selection of Hillsborough dairy farm products, old time candy, seasonal Southeastern produce, cider, frozen prepared vegetables, peanuts, pickled vegetables, hoop cheese, jams and local honey, along with more generic items like purple drink, paper plates, root beer, canned collards, and several kinds of biscuit or cornbread flours. Everyone calls you sweetie or honey, and shopping takes about 5 minutes. It's cheap, convenient, and local. read more
