This golf course keeps getting better and better. The greens are amazing as are the fairways. The organization is committed to making it a top notch public course. The fees are VERY reasonable and the staff is extremely helpful and courteous in both the clubhouse and restaurant. I highly recommend this course over most other public courses. One of the worst public courses I have ever played I used to live by this course when I first moved to Charlotte and it was affordable for a nice round of public golf. The fairways are not grass tee boxes are really bad greens are somewhat ok. The pace of play here is god awful took us around 5 and a half hours to play the around. This was my first time playing this course. It's obvious they don't care about women. One woman's tee box was full of weeds and they were higher than my teed up ball. Another tee box was situated on the middle of the fairway and on a slope. I was standing below the ball and on an angle to hit my drive. The cart paths were terrible. The pace of play was slow and the Ranger did nothing to speed it up. Seemed like no one really cared there and just making money off of kids in their 20s. read more

The last time I played this course was in 1999. It was somewhat new at the time and built on re-claimed property from a land fill. The only hole I remembered was #9, over the Grand Canyon and up a massive hill. The tee box is lower down the hill so you are staring up this hill with no possible way to see over the hill or the flag stick on the green. I was most impressed by the driving range and practice area for chipping and putting. Nearly every course I have gone to in the CLT area is challenged to keep real grass growing on the driving range but not this place. Over all this course is about what you would expect for a Charlotte area public course. The tee boxes are in decent shape, the fairways are spotty with some grass and bare spots. If you have not played a course before, I find there is sometimes a challenge getting on the correct cart path from green to tee. Same for this course, the paths are not well marked. What I found exceptional was the condition of the greens. Not a single bare spot on any of the 18 greens. All well cared for and rolling true. The cart paths are a disaster. There are quite a few blind shots, up hills and severe dog legs. There is a fair amount of water and you'll be punished for missing the fairways, I highly recommend the Perks + passport for affordable golf. There are 5 CLT area golf courses that will offer you discount golf and added discount if you are a Senior. I played 18 holes with a cart for $34.00 bucks. Even though they have a dining room and kitchen, it remains closed due to COVID. If you're distracted by the sound of gunfire, you might want to avoid this course as there is a nearby shooting range. read more

As a golf professional on the Thai Tour, I can say this is one of the greatest golf courses I've ever played. The greens were exceptionally fast with divot marks giving the greens more complexity. The fairways were well maintains with a beautiful bright green color, and the tee boxes were very challenging and very nice. Sometimes there were powerlines on the golf course which added to the overall intricacy and strategy of this course. I was surprised when I came and played first time today. The reviews are pretty bad, but I thought the course was a great deal for the money. I joined the Perks+ for seniors and can play 18 with cart for 22.00 on M-Th. The greens were slow but in good condition. My biggest complaint is the cart paths- they all need to be re-paved. I have played on some bad courses before but none worse than this. Although the greens had recently been punched you can tell they were bare and suffered from year-round maintenance. I just wish I would have taken 5 minutes to read the reviews on this course before I spent $30 for 9-holes. I get it. Courses aren't in their best shape during the winter. But this place is absolutely horrendous. Patches all over the green. Pretty much every green. The carts barely have enough power to make it up the hill. The cart path is missing patches of asphalt, making for a surprise when you hit the dip. This place has a GREAT layout and a lot of potential being close to the heart of Charlotte. This course had been one of my favorites in Charlotte over the past 15 years. It has a very fun layout and is responsibly priced. It's never been in the best condition, but given the price, it was a good value. I played this past Friday, Oct 2, and it was in the worst condition of any course I've ever played. I could barely tell where the fairway/rough ended and the greens began. Whoever is responsible for allowing this gem to fall into such horrible condition should be sent packing. Just the course was great. But the customer service was awful... we played 36 holes and booked back to back tee times. When we payed for the first we were told that the replay rate is a 9 hole waking. When we went to play our second round we were charged full price. When we asked why he rudely said "ok what's the replay rate" and when we told what we were told earlier he responded I misspoke sometimes that happens. It pains me to write this review. I remember when this was a great course. A very well laid out challenging course that offers a great mixture of holes and elevation. With that said the management and grounds keeping is some of the worse I have ever seen in my 30 years playing golf. Sparse fairways and overgrown greens were very prevalent here. Ratcliffe golf services owns the track and others in the area, the others are of similar quality. Looks like Ratcliffe has zero interest in quality of the service they provide, I can only hope that another company buys the track and renovates it. This Renaissance course more formally named Harry L. Jones golf course is run by a group called Ratcliffe Golf. Calling the course direct can't match the price on the Ratcliffe website. But when the website messes up your reservation and you call the number on the confirmation you don't get Ratcliffe or Harry Jones. You get another golf course completely who can not help you at all. And will not give you the number of anyone that can. They just try to say they will look into it and have someone contact you. Very poor customer service and user experience all around just to try and get a correct tee time after I already paid. Now I am just trying to get it cancelled so I can go somewhere else. read more

Bottom line, this course is not worth the money. There are to many courses in the Charlotte area to chose from that are in much better condition. These were the worst greens I have ever played on and I have played some pretty bad ones in my 20 years of golf. It's unacceptable to be on the "green" and be putting from a sand trap at the same time (see pic). Do yourself a favor and play another course. This course owns me. That said, it's a great muni course--best I've played. Course is challenging and will more likely reward the accurate player as opposed to someone who likes to slice their drives all over the place. There are many holes that offer great views. I liked the one on the back 9 where you hit basically through an opening in a forest and down three stories onto the green that's about 200 yds away. Extraordinarily overpriced for the quality of the course. I will be honest, the course has great potential. Some very good and challenging holes. A *lot* of blind tee shots and approach shots. Very difficult to play with no local knowledge. The course was in poor shape. The fairways were absolutely rock hard. The greens were shaggy and had very inconsistent speed (slow to extremely slow). The cart paths had massive potholes and breaks in the pavement. None of this would be really a concern if it was priced fairly. But the off the street price for 18 with a cart was $42 during the week. That isn't shaggy muni pricing. read more

The only good thing I can say about this course is that the staff was very friendly. Now that I got that out of the way lets get to the rest of the review. Renaissance is by far the worst course I have played in the Charlotte area. The fairways are mostly crabgrass, with quite a few bare spots. They were hard packed clay in some areas and a muddy mess in others. If you like hitting off hard pan this is your place. You need a hammer to get your tee into the tee box. Every one of them were rock hard. They also resembled a poorly taken care of driving range. Very little grass to tee off from. The greens look diseased. Some are spongy and wet while others are bone dry. All look like they have a fungus and each one putted at a different speed.. The layout of the course is blah. Overall I would have to say this is one of the ugliest courses I have ever played. At $45 a round it makes it even uglier. This place was more attractive when it was a dump. read more

I've played golf her before. But this was the first time since the name of the course was changed to the Harry Jones Golf Course. A few minor changes have been made. It's a decent course for the money, if you can get a deal on one of the infamous discount golf sites. The fairways are fully grown in for the most part. The greens are ok but not perfect. The layout of the course is great, especially on the back side. I believe if this course is given a little more care and attention, it could be great again. At the beginning of the Summer this course was in the best shape I've seen it in about ten years. In two months it has now gone to the worst shape it has been since I've been playing there. The staff says it is because the city won't budget any money for it but I don't know. They are trying to fill in some low areas with dirt but the greens are barely puttable and they were pretty decent two months ago. Very good course. Has really good bones... At one point, this was probably a top 10 courses in NC, but it has not been kept up like it should, and as a result it has declined some. Front half is wide open, more links style. Back half is tight and long (my favorite). Good twilight rate to boot, with very good people in the club house. read more

Love this course. Sure its a muni but well maintained and somewhat affordable. Charlotte is giving birth to so many upscale daily fee courses that forget about the blue collar golfer that it's nice to have Renaissance to play. The area around the old coliseum is growing so fast that I expect the city to begin cashing in so if you get a chance to play here, do it now and do it often. Lots of sawgrass and bunkering make wayward shots pay but good drives offer birdie on most holes. Number 18 is the signature with a slight uphill dog left that leaves a downhill approach to an ampitheatre green over a lake. Beautiful hole. Nice course, not snobby, and affordable. read more

Three is generous. Holes are well designed but the drainage is not. There are many additional water hazards throughout the course because of this. At $35 an 18 it's not the worse value. You could roll a ball on the greens that were drained for what that was worth. read more

Oh ratcliffe golf courses how are you all so similar. The front nine is more old school and pretty boring. The back 9 seems ten times better. THe greens are usually dreadfully slow and there is no range here. Why do I go to this course? Its very close to home and when the price is right I will play it. Unfortunately right now I would advise to stay away. They punched the greens with a baseball bat and they are horrendous. I would pray for the slow greens to return. read more

The ground is very hard and finding a good patch of grass, even on the fairway is a miracle. Had a blast playing at Renaissance yesterday. Several coworkers from ESPN recommended I try it out and I'm glad I did. Ben in the pro shop was extremely helpful. The rough was a little high so it was a bit tough to find balls that went out of the fairway... guess I should learn to keep them in the fairway! HA! Great course. Staff is excellent. read more
