Have not been back here since the mid-1990's and it hasn't changed a lick! Got in right as they opened on a Sunday afternoon, so we easily got a table in the main bar area. Man, I'd forgotten how small those tables are, especially as we had four people trying to eat a full lunch! Went right back to my go-to order...a beer, a double cheeseburger with fries and we also got a side of onion rings to share around the table. The double cheeseburger was just as I had remembered...grilled on a flattop with nice char. Fries seasoned with Harry's spice were decent (could have been a bit crisper) and dipped in ranch dressing. The onion rings were on the thinner side but with great crunch. Because of the nostalgia factor, they let us in behind the bar to get a group shot (for posterity's sake). Love this spot. It always brings me nostalgia from the college days. I also love the history here. If you have the chance to look around at the pictures and memorabilia, please do. My favorite signature drinks include the Grasshopper, Baltimore Zoo, and the Grateful Dead. Be prepared for a strong drink and a fun time. Drinks come out quick and the servers are always nice. The facility is relatively clean and in decent repair considering the age of the facility and the mass of college aged customers. The service team is excellent at handling chaos. They all hustle and help each other out. The onion rings were really good. A thin piece of onion with a thin batter. The batter was pretty heavy on the salty taste. They were fairly greasy as well. However the fried batter had a nice crisp. The stringy pieces were easy to eat and eat and eat - delicious! The tenderloin was also very good. The meat was a bit thin with a non descriptive/mildly greasy breading taste. It was moist and accompanied by the usual garnishments. The bun was mildly heated and soft. This place is an institution in an institution! Apparently over 100 years old, this spot used to be a speakeasy in the prohibition area. I won't spoil all the folklore here but there are some things you will learn when you visit such as the term "go ugly early", "Drink em pretty" and "fishbowl" I think if I gave all the juicy here it will spoil all the magic, despite this being a review. My point is just..go there! The place is small and crowded, but the drinks are insanely cheap, and the bartenders were attentive and polite. Special shout out to the bouncers. I was walking out and didn't even notice a small altercation just outside the door. They politely asked me to wait until the door opens again before I could leave. I was told fights and altercations are rare here so I came on an off night. Music blasting and laughs all around My first time here while in town for a graduation - DEFINITELY a favorite go-to for the student graduating we were in to visit so we had to go ! Upstairs is far brighter with more windows letting light in - so during daylight hours try upstairs to see if room. Food is decent bar food & you can even go healthy with naked chicken which is beautiful grilled white breast meat chunky strips (I didn't grab photo) If you like banana peppers - don't miss the breaded n fried banana pepper rings - sooooo good They take their maximum head count allowed seriously - so once they are "full" you don't get into until others inside leave. Id say it is the most known saloon in northwest Indiana. I got first drink as a 21 year old there. Overall it is grimey with full of dudes in there. Franks hot dog outside is damn good though. To me this is the quintessential college bar. It is literally adjacent to the Purdue campus. They even sell Harry's gear at the bookstore! You come here for cheap eats and drinks. It has a laid back bar vibe. Nothing fancy. Drinks served in plastic cups. We went Saturday afternoon and walked in easily and had a couple Old Styles. Visited Harry's Chocolate Shop during my one-week stay at Purdue University. I wish I had written this review earlier, but alas, I had not I have forgotten the name of this drink. What I do remember though was that it was a nice, sweet drink that masked the taste of pure alcohol - which I was looking for that night and thoroughly enjoyed. I guess one could say that was the cherry on top... *badumtss* I also ordered their Chicken Nachos, and it was everything one expected from chicken nachos. I was later hungry and also ordered garlic fries, which were also as expected. Not outstanding, but average. My friends ordered a variety of drinks, and there was a wide menu. The drinks were also extremely affordable, and the choice of music made the ambiance an enjoyable place to be... These factors may be why many people enjoy coming to Harry's Chocolate Shop. I really enjoy going back to Harry's, but the last few times I've been there, the bartender with the man bun has been super rude!!! I ordered a kamikaze cocktail, and he just turned it into a shot. When I told him I wanted it as a cocktail, he said, "it's too late for that." I mean, I would've taken the shots too, but I still wanted a drink! He kept insisting, "it's too late for that." I asked him what he meant since it was only midnight, and I hadn't even paid for the shots I didn't order. He got all up in my face to take my card and then made some comment about me. My friends tried to order drinks next, and he shot us the meanest look. At that point, we were totally over his attitude and behavior--seriously, I understand that some customers are annoying but to take it out on someone else isn't cool! We decided to move down the bar to a different bartender, and they were way better than the last guy! We ended up leaving after just one drink because the man bun bartender totally killed the vibe of the bar. Great lunch spot near campus. If is definite the college hang out, as noted by the bouncer at the door checking IDs for lunch. Their Bloody Mary was pretty standard, but the lunch was exceptional! New menu has lost most of the bakery and broad value I enjoyed the first visits here, summertime is definitely the only option as this goes full madhouse during the Purdue semester. Obnoxiously loud, cramped, a fully braindead mess to consider when there's Town and Gown, Lafayette Brewing Co, Revolution BBQ, and many other excellent options just across the river. I'd even do Buffalo Wild Wings before Harry's, at least I can get right in, served, enjoy the college town vibes, and try a big menu. My last visit wasn't all bad until the six o'clock zoo began. Like a migration, the students jammed in and only got worse into our final moments past seven bells, thankfully our food was well made. Chili always slaps. Excellent chicken sandwich and burger, I've had the fried banana peppers which are a best item. Jalapeno poppers were hilarious sized. Donut app wasn't donuts, weird churro things. Drinks were hit and miss. I can vouch for Grasshoppers, Colorado Root Beer, and Baltimore Zoo however the consistency is wack. Good to have them properly pour my Blue Moon! Beer is an ideal price and selection especially for a large group getting pitchers. Eleven dollars for domestic, wow! Parking is a joke. Having any conversation outside of summertime low is the same, the staff quickly became overrun and unable to keep up disappearing for the last fifteen minutes when we wanted to cash out. First time going here and it was weird. It was lunch time and when I first walked in they needed my ID. The space was a bit dull but luckily enough light from the windows made up for that. The menu was mainly sandwiches so I ordered something that was recommended. The food was a let down. The sandwich had no flavor whatsoever. The sauce it came with is what carried it but had I not had that it wouldn't have been even edible. Onion rings were good though. I don't know who Harry is, and this ain't no Chocolate Shop. But if you are looking for the quintessential college bar ... look no further! My wife and I have been wanting to try this place for quite awhile, but it seems every time we are in town, there is a block-long-line to get in (even at 11:00 in the morning)! On our most recent visit there was no line! We were on the cusp of Thanksgiving Break, so the campus was less populated than usual. It was a Sunday night, so that probably helped as well. The inside doesn't appear to have changed in 100 years. Lots of worn wood, and exposed brick. The night we were there, the men's basketball team was playing on the road against Florida State. As you can imagine the game was on all the tv's, and the bar was full of cheering fans. This made for a very fun atmosphere. Being my first visit, I didn't know what to order. Our waitress recommended the pork tenderloin and homemade chips. The pork tenderloin was the best I've had in Indiana. The chips were awesome! We also enjoyed some of the free popcorn. Service was prompt and friendly. It was a fun and lively crowd. Several tables were playing cards. By the time we left, the place was quite crowded and people were waiting for our table. If you are ever visiting Purdue, I highly recommend a stop at Harry's Chocolate Shop. read more

We were in town for a wedding and we were not allowed in because my boyfriend had a temporary IL ID that was completely valid and legal + other proof of ID (photo of passport, credit cards, insurance, et all). In Illinois, they issue you a temporary paper ID while you wait for your permanent ID in the mail. We also had a tab open from being in the bar a few hours prior that we wanted to close so we could get our credit card back. The bouncer, who told us it was his bar, did not let us in with the IL temporary ID and a photo of the passport + knowing we had to get our credit card back and was completely rude and dismissive. He said we had to wait until the end of the line but kept being completely dismissing us. Luckily, we had friends inside that could help us. They closed the tab for us and walked out to give us the credit card back. The bouncer did not move AT ALL to do anything to help, even when the line subsided. We asked if there was anyone else working that could help us retrieve the ID and the bouncer said "oh yes, lots of people are working tonight". I definitely don't feel like it was just about the ID and that it has to do with the color of our skin and our sexuality - we are clearly over 30 years of age. If you read the other reviews, you'll find similar themes in the negative reviews. Definitely do not expect any adequate treatment here or any sort of hospitality. I will say, we enjoyed the drink prices and atmosphere from earlier in the day. In the end, the most upsetting thing is that we missed out on a once in a lifetime celebration of one of our closest friend's marriage. read more

You can't really say you've visited Purdue without a stop into Harry's. It's definitely the most popular and crowded bar on campus, and for good reason. Plus the appetizers are in the $5 range, so they really can't be beat. We usually like dropping in during the summer because then we can easily get a table and relax. The atmosphere is great, service always fast, and all the workers are friendly. Harry's is the only place I've been that has fried banana peppers, so I almost always get those. The quesadillas and nachos are also great. It's your typical bar food, but at an awesome price. The drinks are always good as well - I like sweet drinks so I typically opt for a Starburst or a Baltimore Zoo. If you haven't been, you should definitely drop by when you're on campus! read more

I was denied entry for having a "fishy" ID. I am a Purdue graduate, age 22, and even had a second form of identification. I have an Indiana drivers license, so my ID is not even a more obscure ID like out of state students that the bouncer isn't as accustomed too. I am very dissapointed at this new bouncer. We had the opportunity to visit West Lafayette this summer due to my fiancé having an internship at Purdue, and Harry's was one of our favorite spots to frequent. Their drinks are cheap and good, and the staff are all very friendly and knowledgeable about what they have to offer. This bar has that cozy, hometown pub feel, and you know that you're welcome whenever you're there. We've seen people order drinks there while watching sports, playing cards, doing puzzles, or just chatting and having a good time. Just turned 21 in March and had my first Harry's experience when they opened back in May. I had high expectations for Harry's, but I was still blown away by the place. There is so many different drinks to try and a great food menu to go along with it. I love the grilled cheese and the banana peppers when it comes to food. Additionally, the service at Harry's is fantastic, especially for a college bar. Servers are super nice and very quick to get you drinks or food. I have not had a bad experience in the first few times I have been there. Atmosphere is really neat because Harry's has been around so long. Lastly, Harry's has done a great job navigating this pandemic by continuing to serve in a safe manner. I can't wait to get back in the Fall to get the full Harry's experience! read more

As an OSU alum, Harry's is not a familiar place to me. Living in Indiana now for several years, I've heard about the illustrious Harry's chocolate shop whenever someone talks about Purdue. (I'll admit, I thought it was an actual chocolate shop for awhile.) Visiting with some Purdue alum before the OSU/Purdue game, Harry's was everything you'd expect from a college bar: crowded, loud, and serving strong and cheap drinks. We were lucky to have someone who saved us a table bot still had to wait outside for about 20 minutes before we were allowed in. (Guessing this is due to having to follow fire code.) There were some heaters placed outside so it was t horrible on a very cold night. However it's times like this that I quickly remember I'm not in college anymore. :) At the suggestion of my friend, I ordered a Colorado Root Beer. It was amazing and I'm planning to order another one at the next bar I visit. I also had a cheese quesadilla which was good. But let's be real...you don't go here for the food, you go for the drinks. Lots of character and very obviously a tradition that is well loved by the Boiler Maker crowd. I'm glad I experienced Harry's and would definitely visit again. This is the quintessential hangout at Purdue. The prices and drinks are dirt cheap, which is fabulous. There's tons of graffiti inside the bar from years upon years of faithful clients. Additionally, I learned that the whole "chocolate shop" part of the name was part of their front during Prohibition. I'd only recommend this place if you are looking for something REALLY casual. As a heads up, I'm a cocktail-drinker but they had no menu--the servers will just rattle off drink names from memory, which isn't helpful if you're someone who wants to give the menu a solid once-over before making a decision. There's nothing particularly glamorous about this place. GO UGLY EARLY! BOILER UP!!! Alright I'm a little biased being a Purdue Alum. But Harry's is the only bar that I go to when I come back to Purdue. I love it's divey atmosphere, it's history, singing Piano Man, eating popcorn, and chugging Baltimore Zoos. Since there are so few bars in West Lafayette, Harry's gets packed on weekends so expect a line during the school year. Harry's was also rated as one of the best college bars in the nation by multiple publications. Food is mediocre, but what do you expect, it's a dive bar. I don't know any of the bartenders anymore, but service has always been adequate. When you come to Harry's, you should expect a warm atmosphere, get drunk, and have a good time!
