Seafood salad- really good and a big portion as well! Highly recommend. Amazing sushi- this was a bit of a letdown. The rice wasn't cooked great and sometimes was a bit hard. The fish was fine but I wouldn't say it was the highest quality. This was the main reason for a 3 star. I've had better nigiri fish in town for lower price. The cuts of fish were also too big for the amount of rice. If I have to use soy sauce usually the nigiri wasn't great on its own. Decided to try this spot since I had a craving for Ramen and prob one of the only places in town that has it. Wasn't too impressed though. The ramen was really salty. The other Japanese restaurant I frequent has a large variety of different options like yakisoba, different noodles, fried rice, bowls and so many more options which I love that Haru does not have. The plaza it's located in is a little dark at night and there's not a lot of outside lighting and the spot is sandwiched in between many other stores but their door is always open so you can see inside. I placed the order via Doordash but driver explained that contents leaked, when she opened the bag it looked like the 2 lids that the extra soup had exploded. Only thing I can figure was that the soup was extra hot and the lids being thin cracked and forced the liquid out into the bag. The Doordash associate reported it and they sent another order. With the 2nd order everything looked great, the chicken was a little tough, I mixed the vegetables and I just couldn't get that ramen soup taste. The sushi was pretty good size pieces but I found little bones in the fish not sure if that's normal I have never had that with sushi. I tried the ramen the broth needed more flavor and the meat in it tasted dry also the noodles still seemed undercooked. The bobas are really tasty and a good size and price. My partner wanted to have dinner here. I had been craving sushi and was excited to try a new spot. We ordered a few rolls as well as ramen. The service was very awkward but friendly and well-meaning overall. Once the food arrived, I realized that while the specialty rolls were rather large, they all had "California roll" imitation crab filling as opposed to sashimi like the majority of other sushi restaurants I've ever patronized. I should have read the menu more carefully. Overall, the rolls were pretty good but I would've enjoyed a bit more sashimi. The ramen unfortunately didn't do it for me. The bowl was only lukewarm and flavors just didn't seem very authentic. I would probably opt out to do take out next time and skip the soup. read more

It's been awhile since I have tried this place again and it has definitely gotten SO MUCH BETTER. AMBIENCE: cleaner tables and surroundings. The lighting is much better and does not feel so close and tight. Not too loud when I visited. FOOD: we got pretty basic things but it was good! Condiments such as wasabi/ginger or spicy mayo I believe are just served per request. When we asked, they provided immediately with no problems. We got the 911 roll, funky monkey and spicy scallop roll. All 3 were supposed to be spicy but they were not (this wasn't a problem though). I'm sure if you asked extra spicy they will accommodate that. The food presentation was great and neat but most importantly tasted really well. They serve ramen, lunch specials (bowls/bentos), classic sushi rolls, signature rolls, boba and plenty more! Price range: $5-$30 and for a sushi spot that's cheap but the quality is not an issue. Went here and was really looking forward to a good experience. Instead, I had a very unfortunate and weird one. We pre-ordered through their online service. Everything seemed to go fine. I picked it up and they were ready, even before what we had been promised. I get home and there is a discrepancy. The online menu for the item I ordered did NOT match their printed menu. The online menu item that I ordered had spice tuna inside the roll and what I received was the fake crab stuff that I loathe. Called them up and they said, no problem, we will write your name down and you can reorder when you're ready. So the time comes for me to order a week or so later, and they have amnesia. The chef doesn't believe the story, even after I show them my documentation from the email. He doesn't want to keep their promise. He doesn't acknowledge the glaring discrepancy. If it wasn't for the server who was speaking with the chef and showed that there was something wrong in their system about the descriptions NOT matching, I would have been denied. The chef finally relented and I picked up my roll and vowed to not ever go back. Too bad. Perhaps they have people attempting to take advantage of them OR they just lack in customer service. The ramen was good but the sushi was mediocre. The rolls were big but mostly rice and the rice just tasted like rice. Not like sushi rice. I'd say rice and fish is what makes the sushi really good. Here the fish quality was ok but that was about it. Not very flavorful. We didn't finish either roll we ordered and we definitely did not want to take the leftovers home. But it's the highest reviewed sushi spot, so I gave it a try. it's very humid and hot in the establishment. We ordered three rolls; An alaskan roll, california roll, and a jessica roll. I felt that the signature rolls on the menu didn't have enough versatility, but I worked with it. None of the rolls come out at the same time which is a bit inconvenient. The california roll came out first, not bad. Large roll. The jessica roll came in abt 7 min later, huge! I got this one because it seemed to be the only one topped with raw salmon (my fav) but it's kinda boring because it's basically a california roll topped with salmon. the alaskan came last, like forever last. Now that's just a california roll with salmon on it. Honestly I wanted a more thoughtful roll but I feel like everything is just a california roll. No versatility, semi fresh fish (was kinda warm on the roll) . it was kinda too hot to enjoy the freshness of sushi so my cravings weren't fulfilled. also to mention , I think the rolls without pictures on the left side of the menu are worth any attention, they're a fair price for what you get. So I travel for work A LOT.. and I LOVE good sushi. I'm pretty particular. So my requests include things like premium tuna, premium salmon etc... usually restaurants just nod and charge me for premium and give me basic tuna (like they think I don't know) HOWEVER, HaRu did not disappoint. They provide true premium sashimi, the oysters were a special so I tried 2 and they were the best I've ever had (see comment above about how I travel a lot so I feel my word has clout). Probably 1 of my favorite sushi stops ever. Also they get bonus pts because they had soju. Not just sake and plum wine. This will be a regular stop for me when I'm in Santa Maria. What happened to HaRu Sushi?! New owner or manager?We used to come here for the once awesome Chirashi Sushi plate because of the multiple varieties of sashimi they gave. But recently, it now only has very limited variety: salmon, tuna, yellow tail (plus one boiled shrimp and some tamago). They used to include octopus, squid, escolar, snapper and more. I mean, now they don't even bother to add the traditional daikon radish and shiso leaf garnishes. I even had to ask and wait for ginger/wasabi. Plus, the sashimi was just barely chilled below room temp. My wife and I hardly ate half of the plate. But, the worst part was the combo bento dinner. I ordered beef and mixed tempura. The beef was quite tough, tasted sour and was unevenly cooked (parts well done and rare). The tempura was dried out and dark. I'm certain it was all previously cooked and then refried. The shrimp within the tempura batter was almost unrecognizable, resembling the size and texture of a skinny crunchy Cheeto. Absolutely revolting. Here's a picture of it...see for yourself. Finally was able to visit this restaurant I believed it's under a new ownership. It was at least 5 peaces of edamame on the bottom of the bowl with a lot of garlic/ spices on top. I asked server to exchange this bowl on different one with NO garlic salt due to my husband is allergic to garlic. The answer was, if you want me to bring a new edamame's dish without garlic you have to pay for it .. I lost my sense to speak at this moment and we send it back. In the meantime of our dinner we started hearing very loud voices and screams coming from the kitchen. Someone was dropping off a metal objects or hit metal counters. It was loud. Someone I think it was an owner was not happy there. It was a couple of people at restaurants except us. Everyone stop eating and started looking at the kitchen direction. Finally the sushi chef behind the counter shouted in Chinese something and the voices go down a little. It was continued another 10 min. Strange to that too. No apologies followed up Server was rude, ignorant and newer refilled our drinks. When she brought our check I asked her what the reason she refused to give us edamame without garlic salt. She went ballistic. The explanation was that she can not waste the food. IT's complimentary. If I wanted something different I have to pay for this. She called me rude and I asked if I can speak to the owner. It was nothing to talk about here anymore. She turns around face the owner who was sitting behind the counter and loudly started explaining the situation in front of everyone and of course she try to protect herself I am not sure if owner understands the situation well but for some reason he wanted to give me edamame to go. Today while in Santa Maria I was craving calamari, so I stopped in HaRu Sushi in Stowell Center Plaza- It was a nice comfortable atmosphere with booths as well as the Sushi bar- We chose a booth and was immediately greeted by a friendly server - I ordered the Calamari legs but was informed that they no longer had them due to the supplier not providing them anymore and only had the cut calamari steak, to which I agreed to try- I also ordered the Moon river roll as well as the BBQ Cowboy roll- The calamari was actually very delicious and came with the spicy mayo- It was cooked just right- The moon river roll was rolled in cucumber as I was wanting very little rice so this was a good choice! They were filled with fresh fish- I think adding a sauce would definitely make this a better dish as they were served plain- I chose the BBQ Cowboy roll just to try something entirely different- This roll included thin slices of short rib that were seasoned really well and much to my surprise was very tasty- Though I think this roll should also have a sauce to tie it all together- Lastly I chose yellow tail sashimi that was fresh and a good portion- All in all it was a delicious meal and I would definitely stop by here again when in Santa Maria! read more

I'm being courteous with an extra star because the ramen is excellent for the area. I got the garlic ramen with an extra egg just because the egg is so good! The noodles didnt taste or feel like they were from cheap packaging and the broth was yummy! So kudos to HaRu on the ramen but everything else ive gotten from there was below average. Ive gotten sushi twice and either the fish to rice ratio was off or the fish quality didn't taste fresh. If you actually know your sushi this is a lower quality sushi spot in my opinion. Ive gotten the hamachi kama here as well which was also below average taste was odd. And the mango boba tasted too artificial and the boba chewiness was obviously not fresh and too soft and chewy. A bit higher than 4 actually. Had a craving for AYCE sushi while I was in Santa Maria. Lots of places in LA and the OC. Only 1 in Santa Maria and the next closest one is over 20 miles away in Grover Beach. Came by today (Monday) when they first opened. I was their first customer. Didn't know what to expect so I chose the AYCE "A" option ($29.95) and told the server that I might change to the "C" option ($49.95) because of the toro choices. Unfortunately, the server said you need to notify them a day in advance for the C option. Oh well, I guess A or B ($39.95) for me. I ordered the 5 nigiri options in A to start. When my order arrived I was surprised how big the pieces of fish were and how good they looked. I immediately told the server I wanted to upgrade to B. The fish looked and tasted good. I'm not a fan of tuna (except when I'm in Japan for some reason). My second order was salmon sashimi and fresh water eel from the B menu. Again, the orders were big. They do use a lot of rice in the nigiri but the fish/eel portion is big. Fresh water eel was tasty. I ordered more of the stuff I ordered earlier and tapped out after 4 total orders with fewer pieces eaten compared to other AYCE restaurants I've eaten at because the portions are bigger here. I think the next time I choose to come here, I will pass on AYCE here and just order off the menu as the nigiri portions are big but the AYCE price to get fresh water eel is on the high side. If you are real hungry and can eat alot, go with AYCE. If you don't eat much, it probably won't be worth the price. Service was excellent.
