Egg noodle soup and Spicy Hot Sour soup. Soups were great! But the main dishes not so much. The White meat of chicken looked like it was was sliced in a Mandolin, and was steamed, Not sautéed. The surface was great. They had plenty of times where they came and asked me what I would like and if anything could be changed numerous times. Unfortunately, every single time I had a problem they never addressed the issue. Always walking around the fact that the full portion that I ordered was only a half order. I paid more for the honey walnut shrimp then any other dish on the table yet there was less food on my plate then and the other plate at half the price. The picture is deceiving and beware of eating at this restaurant if you are OK being fooled by what you see on the menu. I would recommend changing the pictures on the menu to accommodate what they're actually serving you and give you appropriate proportions especially if I'm paying for the most expensive dish on the menu. The food was great and I have no complaints in the area. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. I'm very disappointed, we have been going to the Magic Dragon for six years and their service is way down. Everything tasted like it was sitting on the warmer. The orange chicken was not crispy. It was soggy. The eggrolls were soggy. The beef and peas was the only thing that was cooked, except the peas were overcooked. Second time here. Both times were for takeout. Decent prices for the amount of food you get. I prefer this place to three other Chinese restaurants that are nearby. Went with the walnut crispy shrimp, sizzling beef and scallops, and a cup of the hot and sour soup. All were delicious and I was not disappointed. Rice is not included for most orders unless you make it a combo. Other places include the rice though. Thought they had my order wrong for the beef and scallops, but found the scallops were underneath everything (pictured below). Probably will order from again. read more

Howdy folks. How's all of my fellow Yelpers doing? Your's truly Nasty Nathanial here with another one of my "Nasty" reviews. I'm going to start this review off by saying that a name like "The Magic Dragon" may make you hesitant to eat here. I know it did with me. Often times when restaurants are given names like this it means that they are serving poorly made imitation food. Kind of like when a Mexican restaurant is named "La Cucaracha," you best look elsewhere. But this is not the case at The Magic Dragon. This Dragon here is the real deal and I'm gonna tell you about it right now. I used to think that there were no good Chinese restaurants on the Central Coast. There's always been some alright ones. But not any that I'd call really good. At least not since Bud Wong's New York Style Chinese Food in Guadalupe closed up shop. But then a couple years ago I discovered The Magic Dragon. It was actually on Christmas Day out of all days of the year. Basically what it came down to was everyone was burnt out from being in the kitchen all day preparing Christmas Eve dinner that nobody wanted to cook a separate big dinner for Christmas Day. But what in the Hell kind of a place would be open on Christmas Day? That's when I thought of the 1981 classic movie "A Christmas Story" and I thought, "that's it!" Lets have Chinese food. Thus begin the family tradition of having Chinese food on Christmas Day. Off to The Magic Dragon! The Magic Dragon is located inside of a historic building known called Landmark Square on Broadway Avenue. It actually sits right across the street from the Santa Maria Inn Hotel which is somewhat of a landmark all of it's own. But the Landmark Square actually used to be the home of The Santa Maria Club. Now it's the home of the best Chinese restaurant in town, The Magic Dragon. The restaurant is actually one of a handful of business that are located within' the Landmark Square. So when you walk in the main entrance of the building you go up a short flight of steps, turn to the left, and there you are. The first thing that you'll see if your looking straight ahead is a statue of a pudgy little Buddha. He's got a friendly smile and a belly that indicates that he's probably sucked back a few bottles of Tsingtao Beer. Probably more than a few. But beyond the beer drinking Buddha is a pretty decent sized dinning room that is beautifully decorated with oriental lanterns and artwork. This place can actually accommodate a pretty large amount of people. And the tables aren't crammed together like they do at some of these restaurants like North China Restaurant. It's like they cram you into one space as if you are sardines. I'm sorry but I'm not interested in smelling the person at the next table over's body odor. You can expect that if you ever decide to dine at North China. But not at The Magic Dragon. Obviously the management here is consciousness about things like this. Let's get into to the food at The Magic Dragon which is amazing. And I say the word "amazing" with no hesitation whatsoever. The food at this place is absolutely amazing. I would recommend the shrimp fried rice and the honey walnut shrimp. I've got a fetish for fried rice and Magic Dragon's is some of the best I've had south of San Francisco. For those of you who have read my review of Wing Lum you'll know what I'm talking about. But seriously this fried rice is like nothing I've ever had on this Earth. Or at least in Santa Maria. And the Honey Walnut Shrimp. Oh don't even get me started on how good this dish is. But I will say it's better s**. This is by far the best Chinese food in Santa Maria. Actually, I'm going to take it a step further by saying that this is the best Chinese food on the whole Central Coast. In addition to the outstanding food, one of the things I've always digged about The Magic Dragon is their exceptional service. It's fast and efficient. But not in a phony kind of way. Some places just want to get you out the door as quickly as possible so they can maximize profits by cramming more people into the dinning room. But not at The Magic Dragon. And their service comes with a smile. I mean it. All of the servers here walk around with smiles on their faces. And not the phony kind of smiles that servers sometimes put on their faces in order to get a big tip out of you. These are genuine smiles. That or they've all been smokin' some good green out back. Either way, I dig it. Well, I think I'll go ahead and wrap this review up by giving The Magic Dragon in Santa Maria a BIG 5 Stars, or 10 Fingers. This place truly is the go to spot if you want to enjoy spectacular Chinese cuisine. So get in your car, hop on your bike, climb onto your horse, or whatever your mode of transportation is, and head on over to The Magic Dragon. You won't be disappointed. In an effort to support local businesses during the pandemic, we thought we would give this place a try. Never heard of it, never been here before. We obviously didn't get much further than the lobby since the dining room is closed, but what we could see of the decor, it looked very native to the Asian culture. On to the food. Dinner for 2 looked liked dinner for 4....they really pack in the quantities. I tried the General Tao's chicken combo which was just a perfect blend of flavors, including a hint of "spicy". My wife picked the sweet & sour pork which also was loaded with rich tastes. Because we love chow mein, we also needed to "sample" some (could easily feed 2 people). The chow mein has a natural and soft taste to it. We would love to try some more of their menu, and with the "shelter at home" in place for at least another month, I can see us getting some opportunities to support this business while we support our taste buds. read more

It was like we were in the twilight zone We got some of our food in like 2 min and it was like they just warmed it up and it had been sitting there. No way it was fresh. they gave us some soup and I almost threw up it was so thick and slimy Then we're waiting and waiting for our next entree to come so we asked for fresh plates because I didn't want the white rice that we didn't ask for and it was messy from the other food. so we're sitting there and this man that works there is standing a couple feet away from our table and he is staring at us most the time. It made us feel uneasy a little bit. We couldn't have a conversation or look around because he would lock eyes with us. This other worker came and was like do you want a box and I was like we're still waiting for our next thing and the guy was like oh ok and so we sat there for another 10min with our fresh plates and nothing came out so we just asked for the check and it wasn't even on the check and they never brought our fried rice or nothing so we just got sweet and sour chicken that wasn't good. Well, it has been two years. While the service is better (we were the only people eating in the restaurant) the food is worse. The soup had a blob of corn starch or flour (thickening agent) which had not dissolved. Yuck! The sweet and sour pork: the pork was tough and overcooked. Still on the hunt for decent Chinese food on the central coast.... We ordered our usuals, Mongolian beef, snow pea chicken, chicken chow mein, shrimp appetizers and wontons. Everything was good, not exceptional. Tasted better the second day and there was plenty for leftovers times for lunch. I cannot complain, the portions were quite large!
