The first thing that I want you do know, is that this is NOT the business called "California Sushi & Teriyaki ". The negative reviews that you see here from a few years ago are for THAT restaurant, and not Nipomo Sushi, which opened in the same location 2 years ago. I had been hearing that Nipomo Sushi was really good and we finally went there for dinner last night. I'm only sorry we hadn't tried it sooner. The staff is friendly, the chef is super talented (& Cool!), the ambiance is warm and relaxed and the food is nothing less than amazing. We were thrilled with everything we ordered from basic nigiri sushi to a couple of rolls. The fish was fresh, the sauces delicious and I can't believe we are so lucky to have this quality of dining just minutes from home! I can't recommend them enough. Ok, where to start. This quaint sushi restaurant is in an Ace Hardware and Starbucks parking lot. So I wasn't sure what to expect. My husband and I are always looking for good or hopefully great places to eat. Still fairly new to the area, so many restaurants to try, so many to go! We love sushi. The food here is so good! It's such an underrated small place and somehow has such wonderful food and employees. All of the employees are super nice and inviting. The sushi chef was a delight to talk with very funny man. They seem to genuinely care about their customers and it makes the place feel all the more inviting! All the girls there are such a delight, my server was so sweet and helpful with me, she had lots of personality and I love a good server. We moved to the area last year and have been searching for a good sushi spot. I think we found it! Nipomo Sushi had delicious sushi, a nice atmosphere and super nice staff. The fish on the nigiri sushi was very fresh and the fish to rice ratio was perfect. We only tried one of their special rolls but it was excellent. We have always gone to Kanpai but didn't like the drive and the kinda frenetic vibe. Nipomo sushi is exactly what you want for a chill neighborly spot. Extra points for having FRESH wasabi, I don't care if it's $3 (it should be cuz it expensive to carry), it's a treat if that's your thing. Another plus is the teriyaki side of the menu for the none sushi eaters. My husband and I went to try out Nipomo Sushi for lunch since we had never been there. It is very nice and clean inside. The wait staff is very nice and personable as well as attentive. We ordered the Calamari Tempura to start. It came out quickly with a nice sauce on the side. They were large sticks and were so good! Nice and crispy but tasted fresh. For lunch I ordered the Baked Salmon Roll which came out fairly quickly as well. It was delicious! In the roll it had the baked salmon on top of the rice, cucumber, avocado and seaweed. As usual, Scott prepared delicious sushi. I had a spicy albacore roll that was one of the specials. It was delicious and just spicy enough to be pleasant and not painful. He prepared an order of halibut sushi and suggested I not use any soy sauce. Just a little ginger. He was right! So good. Service was attentive, keeping my water glass full. I finished with a rice-free roll based on cucumber. Super good! Scott then made me a little "dessert", seared tuna and great sauce. It's a nice, quiet spot to enjoy fantastic sushi. So happy I decided to try this restaurant. Sushi was amazing with very generous cuts of fish and bento boxes were good as well. Sushi chef was excellent. Please remember to tip him for the time and expertise he puts in to delight the customers. I ordered many items and they were all super tasty, with just the right amount of rice to veggies to sushi, except for the miso soup which had no seaweed and very little bits of tofu. I ordered some rolls to go for my family as well. The asian waittress was also very nice and accommodating. I highly recommend this restaurant and I'm really looking forward to coming back. I recently moved to the area and decided to give this place a try for my first time. Ordered over the phone and picked up my order. When I entered, I was greeted and helped right away so that was great. Food is decent but it's ridiculous that they charge you for sauces on to go orders.. sauces are free they say if you eat there but $2 for tiny chili oil, 50 cents for Sriracha or spicy mayo. You spend $75 on it to go order you would think they would give you one of each if requested as they do when you dine in there. All the previous negative reviews can be put aside now. New ownership has definitely translated to a great spot for sushi in Nipomo! We stopped in for Friday lunch and were quickly greeted by a very sweet wait staff. Service was fast! We ordered a lunch bento combo with beef teriyaki, spicy tuna roll, and veggie tempura and the sashimi combo. The bento was great, and a good value for the different foods you get. We especially enjoyed the tempura, which was crisp and not oily at all. The sashimi combo (4 types of fish, 4 pieces each) was amazing. The fish was fresh, the cuts were generous, and I especially enjoyed making little wraps with the shiso leaves. The menu is limited but I hope that means they are focusing on the good things. We've been here over an hour. Place is less than one half full on a Sunday evening. My husband's vegetable tempura came after 20 minutes, as did the miso soup included in my son's dinner. Owner (maybe) very attentive and checked on us several times.
