I often frequent Fairmont hotels as they feel like home to me. We came here for dessert the other day as Edmonton is home to us. There was peach crisp and cheesecake served. Everyone loved them. Service amazing as usual. read more

Ok, where do I start. High expectations on food and service, but disappoints on both. First they don't have my reservation, even though someone from the restaurant called the previous day to confirm. Then the food was disappointing. First was the sorbet (couldn't taste the citrus - just ice with candied ginger), then the scones which was quite good. Then came the tray. Out of the whole thing the only few that I actually enjoyed was prosciutto with melon and smoked duck, asparagus and lemon aioli. The rest were just blah. Oh and tea was tea bags - not even real loose tea (and it was very weak). For such a nice hotel and $39 price, very disappointing. Not worth the money or time, unless you just want to impress someone. read more

Went to the Harvest Room at the Fairmont McDonald for the first time having purchased a Groupon. The service was absolutely excellent as one would expect from the Fairmont group. We enjoyed a number of appetizers including Lobster Chowder (which is more like a Lobster Bisque) with seafood, boar bacon and potatoes in it, Seared Scallops, Waygu Beef Carpaccio, Rabbit and Truffles and we finished with a cheese, fruit and nut plate. All of the food was very good as were the wine pairings. With the Groupon this was a very nice meal for a reasonable price. However, without a Groupon, they have a Price Fixe Menu that I think is extremely reasonable. It's $59 for your choice of appetizer, entrée and desert. With most appetizers ranging from $16 - $21, most entrees from $41 - $48 and $12 deserts this is an excellent option. We will return to try this. read more

Brunch! We headed here for a birthday brunch as we found an incredible Groupon deal that was too good to pass up. We had the full buffet which included eggs benedict, pancakes with berries and whipcream, scrambled eggs, potatoes, roasted tomatoes and more. There was also a selection of cheese, fruit, smoothies, yogurt and oatmeal. All the food was delicious; however, the staff could not keep up with the buffet. We would go up for seconds and all the serving dishes would be empty. Then, you had to play this dance of watching and waiting for them to be filled again. I would definitely recommend going for brunch, if you are able to score a deal with Groupon. Otherwise, it is a bit expensive, especially if you need to continually wait for the food. read more

As a repeat Fairmont client for many years,we expected perhaps a little too much. Summary: Our Dinner for Four ( March 2016 ) The portions are small but this is par for the course in most high-end restaurants. It's all about the quality and the experience....right? -The beef dish I had however was extremely tough and I had difficulty chewing through the cut. My side dishes lacked the past flavour I was accustomed to on previous visits. Not really sure what happened on this visit. The presentations; for all our dishes, including appetisers and deserts,they were off the charts! Didn't know whether to take a picture or dig in! Unfortunately my wife was not feeling well that night so we can excuse the restaurant for its part in her sending her food back...uneaten. ( Who knows...It was probably the best of all our choices!) Our server was exceptional. Perhaps one of the kindest and best we have ever experienced.... and WE EAT OUT A LOT! In fairness to the hotel MacDonald, we did not give them a chance, nor did we notify our server of our overall disappointment with the dishes we chose. Namely because we did not want to "dampen the mood" while entertaining our out of town guests. We will indeed return to the Hotel MacDonald and revisit The Harvest Room Restaurant. I'm thinking this was just a one time occurrence, as all previous meals have been enjoyed immensely! And of course with ease of parking ( Covered parkade) , the views from the hotel and surrounded by the elegant historical charm, it's hard to beat! Lovely dining room. Interesting menu with plenty of great choices. Recommend the wine pairings to accompany your meal. The only negative is the desserts we tried all of them and none were really worth the indulgence. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with this place. The food was exceptional (although the servings are a bit small but that is to be expected in this kind of restaurant). The service was wonderful as well, we got excellent treatment even though we brought in a Groupon for our dinner (some places become rude and abrupt with us after showing them a Groupon). Went for a date night with my boyfriend and it was really romantic, you get a nice view of the river valley and it looks like they have a patio for the summer time. The table we were seated at had barely enough room to pull my chair out and was wobbly, I then realized by the corner legs and braces it was a portable card table made up I assume to add more capacity... however... the service was excellent and the meal from a set menu was ok. Came with high expectations due to the reviews here but the experience was underwhelming. We had the short ribs and lamb dishes and they tasted blend. The ribs was a good portion but the lamb portion was tiny, especially for the price. Deserts were fine. But they charged $5 for a coffee no better than Tim's, definitely felt ripped off on this one. The bill came to $120 before tips on two mains, two deserts and a coffee, definitely wasn't worth this much. Take your money and go somewhere else. read more

Came for high tea on a Sunday. Food was excellent. It would be nice if they made clotted cream in house instead of serving Devonshire cream, but not the end of the world. Biggest disappointment was the seat. We were stuffed in a corner near the server supply area and heard clanging dishes the whole time. One of us had a bit of a view of the room but the other had to stare at a wall the whole time. Not the type of atmosphere one would expect for nearly $60 per person. read more

Classy place, cozy inside with nice view. The service is great and they have nice cocktails. We ordered the set 65$ menu, which offered an amuse-bouche, an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert. The appetizers were very beautifully plated and were classic and delicious. I had the stuffed chicken and it was good but not amazing. Booked a breakfast reservation in April, it was still quite chilly in Edmonton, but this is an ideal place to visit when it's warm because you can walk out onto the balcony with a breathtaking view of the river valley. The dining room is quite beautiful, very high ceilings and a fancy decor. The symphony music was a little unusual at 8am. I ordered Eggs Benedict with salmon added. Very rich and delicious, but nearly $30 for the standard 2 eggs on english muffins with salmon. A little bit on the pricey side. read more

My husband and I have a tradition that we go to their dining for our anniversary for some years. For the first few years, we enjoyed their food and the upscale atmosphere very much. They used to bring us a special surprise plate to celebrate our special day (some chocolates and fruits without charge). However, we did not have the same experience when we went back this summer. My husband orders a stake, and I ordered a fish for our entree, but we found them to be salty, and the chef failed to cook the stake properly. They used to serve dishes that were a little more creative and had richer flavor. We were sad to end our anniversary tradition but will go to somewhere else for our future. read more

We went for a lovely wintery walk in the river valley to enjoy the sunrise and decided to stop in the Fairmont for breakfast. We were a bit taken back by the high prices but figured we could splurge for good food. We tried the buffet, and while everything looked amazing, unfortunately the taste was similar to a buffet of half the price. Oh well, now we know. It is a beautiful venue in a great location with amazing views. Next time we will just try one of the menu items to share. read more

My husband and I went here to celebrate our anniversary. Our server was very friendly (but not too friendly) and treated us very curteously. I always like a server who moves my chair for and places my napkin in my lap and all that. He gave us plenty of time and space to make our decisions on wine and food. My husband picked out the wine, otherwise I would have picked it out based on name or location (I'm fancy like that, you know), he's more knowledgeable about wine than I am, but it turned out to be a very good choice. The bread was very good, with a honey butter. It was difficult not to eat the butter straight once we ran out of bread . . . ahem. I ordered the three-course meal, which included an appetizer, main course, and dessert. I chose the lobster chowder, beef tenderloin, and baked alaska. The lobster chowder was decent. I'm not normally a lobster kind of person, but I enjoyed eating it all. The beef tenderloin was well-named. I'm not sure I've ever had a beef as tender as that. It was as soft as a newborn baby. Well, that sounded a little creepier than I meant. I mean to say, it was remarkably soft, in a good way. The vegetables along with it were quite good. It also came with oxtail-something and I've got to be honest: I don't really know what oxtail is, except that perhaps it is . . . tail of an ox? In any case, I didn't identify anything on the plate that I didn't like, which is pretty good for someone who tends to be a pretty picky eater. Around the same time that our dessert came out, our server (named Dew) also brought out a piece of cake on a long plate that had "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate on it and two glasses of champagne out for us, which was very kind of them. The cake was very good and kinda made me wish I had just ordered more cake, but that's OK. I'd never had baked Alaska before and wanted to try it. It turns out that baked Alaska is pretty good, especially the chocolate ice cream part. Note: don't let it burn too long, or else it tastes too burny. But that was my fault. Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience there. Something about the place felt kind of old, if you know what I mean. Maybe because everybody else there was old, but that's not bad. Made me feel young. And also the place was pretty quiet, and I don't like being around loud people anyway (afterward we went to the Craft Beer Market which, suffice it to say, was far too loud AND had too many guys wearing hats -- since when did guys start thinking it's OK to wear hats indoors? Just no.). So if asked, I'd definitely go there again. read more

The Harvest Room is really quite special. It's located in one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Alberta. Beautifully, richly appointed. The place exudes decadence. Serviced by an extremely helpful and courteous staff, prompt and cheerful. I've tried the food a few different times and I've not once been disappointed. I went once for the buffet breakfast - totally reasonable price (I think it was $26), and the spread was small - but very nice. Mostly pretty standard breakfast buffet, but everything was prepared with pride and care and was very delicious. The eggs bennie in particular, I was very impressed with. My girlfriend had the peaches and cream french toast (off the menu), she liked it enough to order it a second time the next time we went for brunch. I tried it as well, and I can attest to the brilliance. The next time we went we tried out the lunch menu. We both had a starter, her the scallop, and myself the chowder. Bother were very tasty and presented beautifully. For lunch I had the steak frites, which was decent & we had some amazing foi gras on the side, as well. She had the famous crab cakes which did not disappoint. On our most recent visit, we went for brunch - as I'd mentioned the girlfriend re-upped on the peaches and cream french toast, but I decided to go for the crab cakes with poached eggs. So rich and tasty, creamy and savoury. Could go for another portion right now! The cocktail selection is quite nice, and they have an alright beer menu as well. If you're looking for an upscale dining experience, and all that comes with it - with one of the best views in the city - Harvest Room might be a good bet. read more

A group of us went to The Harvest Room at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald for dinner and enjoyed the ambiance and the view of the river valley. The waitstaff were prompt and attentive and the service time was well within reason. The quality of the food that we order was excellent and each of us enjoyed what we ordered immensely. We did not have any issues and everything met our expectations. It was a great meal and a memorable experience. Hope to come back again soon. read more

We purchased a 2-for-1 Groupon and here from a lunch buffet last week... service was exceptional however the food quality was below what I was expecting. Pasta dish was bland, salmon wrap average, veggie sandwich not so good. Even at the groupon price the end bill was $40 for two. I was expecting better. The food was good.They started us off with an amuse bouche, and then we ordered the three course meal which got us each an appetizer, an entree and a dessert for $65. I got the seafood medley for the main course and there was some sort of fish or something in there that seemed dry and not tasty, but the rest was delicious. We popped in for dinner on the balcony. I had an unbelievable brisket sandwich on rye with Caesar salad- truly the best Caesar I've ever had. The view was fabulous, there was fire pits for some sort of celebration, and they brought us blankets. Bill was about 60$ for a totally elegant quick dinner with my son- and 5 star experience. We came here for our anniversary supper and was not disappointed. In fact we were amazed at the service, food and ambience. Our server, Stephanie was exceptional. My wife and I both had a the beef tenderloin- outstanding and done to perfection. From the appetizer through to dessert, everything was perfect. The last time we were at the MacDonald Hotel was 14 years ago. So glad we were able to come back and revisit this majestic hotel overlooking the river. A real treasure. read more

Very exceptional service from beginning to end. Very attentive service, we were delighted to have Dew Johnny as our waiter who made our dining experience amazing. He was very friendly and welcoming. You can tell he is every experience and well trained in the hospitality industry. The decor is warm and inviting and very classy. And then there was the food! Everything tasted fresh and well prepare with the presentation making one eager to bite into every morsel. Also, being a vegetarian, I was extremely impressed with the variety of vegetarian options. My boyfriend took me out to The Harvest Room for my birthday this year. What a fantastic spot this is! We had a great table overlooking the River Valley. Our waiter, Tim, was wonderful. I had the scallops and M had the Nova Scotia lobster chowder, being from NS we can say both of these items were cooked to perfection! Delicious! For our entree, I had the date and fig stuffed chicken and M had the salmon. Again, delicious food! Dessert was a pumpkin pie creme brule served with coconut sorbet. Have I mentioned the delicious food here? I'm looking forward to the summer to enjoy a nice brunch on their patio. read more

Having enjoyed High Tea at other Fairmont properties (notably The Empress in Victoria) we were disappointed by our recent experience in Edmonton. While the serivce was fine and, well, tea is tea, everything else was pedestrian at best and not worth the cost. We were served on plain old restaurant plates and coffee cups (not china) and not a silver tea service to be seen. The food was average compared to a handful of other fine dining establishments and to make it worse, the promised Royal Tour wasn't Royal at all since the actual suite was closed for renovations.
