The food was DELICIOUS, the cook here has a blessing for sure. I loved the cowboy scrambler I had, and the coffee was really nice too. My mom and I shared some french toast as well, and it was so yummy! It was fluffy and soft, very edible so it was gone before it went cold. The service was excellent. There was one lady serving people but it's a small place and she managed it so well it didn't even feel busy, so that was not an issue. She was super sweet by the way! She got honey for my coffee and such. Overall, its a good place to go. Not too expensive and its got a lovely, quiet family atmosphere. If I can, I will return! read more

This was our first time at the Whistling Kettle Cafe. It was a little awkward to find from 50th Street but Google Maps had it in hand. The place definitely has an old school diner vibe going and that's not from clever decorating. This is an old school diner. We didn't want breakfast and I think that is their specialty so we each ordered the clubhouse sandwich. It came with soup and fries. The soup was from a can so that's not impressive. The sandwich was okay though. Service was prompt and friendly. The washrooms were clean. That's about all I can say. If you are nearby and hungry, by all means stop in. However I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to dine here. read more

In a time of overhyped breakfast joints and benny everything, humble family run diners like the Whistling Kettle Cafe hold special appeal. Gotta love a classic diner breakfast, and here your eggs and bacon are served quickly, with a smile and with lots of fresh coffee, for about $10-12. And it's a good breakfast too, flavourful with a nice balance of ingredients. I had the scrambler special which comes with ham, onion and green pepper, with a choice of rye, white or brown toast. I appreciate that the jam/PB are name brand given the cost, these little things make a difference. Service is quick and attentive, the meals arrived within minutes, coffee rounds were regular, and tables are quickly cleared and sanitized. The diner has 14 tables, with 10 booths around the outside which are still separated by partitions. Not that they need to be, the booths are not squishy and there is enough room to manoeuvre around the tables. The place is also spotless, even the washroom, and one can see in to the kitchen. Food overfilled me. The service was amazing. The moment I walked in this restaurant my eyes immediately came to rest on the booths that were everywhere on each side of the restaurant. I sat in the middle, intentionally, as many wanted seating along side of the restaurant. This could be a 4.3 star restaurant if it had more locations and wad bigger. The Whistling Kettle is one of those places that has been around forever but flies completely under the radar. No social media that I can find, but #iykyk. Old school diner with a simple, small menu full of #yegcheapeats. It's dated and sparsely decorated, but the coffee is kept topped up and the food is fast and delicious. Run by the sweetest Asian family, this local spot has both breakfast and lunch options. They were busier before covid, so they can use the extra love and support. This is by far our favourite breakfast spot! They do serve a lunch menu, but we're obsessed with their breakfasts which are available at any time during their opening hours. It's a family love affair going here, as my whole extended family loves this place too! You seat yourself when you walk in and are brought coffee/tea within 1-2 minutes of sitting down. You can order breakfast off their white board of specials or choose more from the menu provided to your table. The white board breakfast specials are the best! My husband always gets the French toast special with sausages bacon and eggs for under $10 and loves how it comes out every time (& he's super picky!) I change up what I get, but the serving sizes are always more than you'd expect for such a low price! And the food comes within 5 minutes every time!!! It can get super busy up until about 1pm. The longest we've waited was 5-10 minutes with three parties ahead of us. I think because the food comes so quickly, the tables rotate faster. You never have to ask for a refill of coffee or hot water for tea as they check on you every couple of minutes and are always walking around with hot coffee. It gets pretty packed here on the weekends with a lot of under 30s coming in in group, seemingly after a fun night out. Everyone is always in a good mood here, staff and customers, and the place leaves you full and happy. The owners didn't have to focus so much on decor because the food honestly speaks for itself. It's a great little hidden gem & one I believe every edmontonian should try! read more

Mike hit it right on the head when he wrote that there is nothing fancy about the Whistling Kettle. The small menu is primarily filled with quick and easy to prepare lunch and breakfast options and the small cafe area is sparsely decorated with a few pieces of Asian themed artwork. What it lacks in ambiance however it makes up for in taste and value. I got a BLT on brown bread and a fairly good sized salad today for $7.99. All the ingredients tasted fresh and the bacon seemed to be of a good quality as it really wasn't greasy or fatty. The staff (not sure if any of them were owners or managers) seemed fairly nice and gave me an enthusiastic warm welcome when I informed them it was my first time in today. I came to the conclusion that this place has a very solid base of regulars as I watched an older lady working the room refilling coffee's and asking how people's work and families were doing. The atmosphere here is so casual and laid back I think it really appeals to a wide variety of people as I noted there was an older truck driver in on his lunch break,a table of college students studying,and a young family sitting behind me. I did read the review from 2011 by Cherie K. prior to deciding whether or not to eat here. I also then proceeded to log on and check out the inspection reports and it looks like everything has been fine here for a little over a year minus one report of a cleaning cloth not being properly stored. As I mentioned before the staff seemed really nice so I do hope that Alberta Health is continuing to work with them so they can earn back the trust of former diners like Cherie. I really enjoyed my experience here today so I do encourage people to give it a chance as the food was great and it was very apparent they have worked hard to rectify their past issues. read more

Used to eat breakfast here a lot. A typical "greasy spoon". Inexpensive food, quick service. Then I read the health reports by Capital Health and found out this restaurant had a lot of health violations. From vermin to unsafe food practices, that was enough for our family to decide never to eat here again. Sometimes a greasy spoon is just that and not worth the risk. I would not recommend eating here unless they undergo new management/owners. read more

Quaint little gem on 50th street, the Whistle Kettle has everything you want in a breakfast joint. Clean environment, friendly staff and holy cow - speedy service! As far as small, quick, friendly & efficient service goes, this is THE place to go on the North side of Edmonton. If you can get a seat that is! Great for those whom are in a hurry, and just want to have a good quick, hot, breakfast served with a smile. If there was more seating, of course that would be better, and the coffee sometimes isn't all it could be. Not exactly a child friendly environment, unless you have quiet, sit still kids. My family enjoy this cafe for brunch weekend mornings often. We like the fast service and the good food. I checked the Alberta Health Inspection website and if they had problems in the past they have sorted it out. There wasn't anything more serious then a missing thermometer in one of their coolers and they needed to clean their dish clothes better. I will admit that the cafe has done a big change, the walls are repainted, the table tops are new, and the layout is much better. The servers are a nice enough, some talk and smile more than others but none are rude. The food is still very good and price is right. There are high chairs and are accommodating large groups. The typical breakfast time is very busy so I would recommend going before /after or be warned you will have to wait a bit. Turn around is rather quick however I never felt rushed to leave. read more
