The Tavern on the Gorge boasted a friendly staff, good bar food and a welcoming atmosphere with a good assortment of beverage offerings. I happened to catch this place during a night whereby they had comedians from NYC. The comedians were very good and got plenty of laughs poking fun at the Afirondack lifestyles and values. The patrons appreciated this ribbing and a great night of unexpected fun was a much needed release for me and my wife. We will return on our next trip to the North Country to recapture this homespun experience.

Chalk it up to Upstate, NY doing what Upstate, NY does best: Cold Beer and Chicken Wings. And in…read morethis case, it should be Chicken Wings first and cold beer second. You can certainly pull up a bar stool and drop a Utica Club in a can or get a Saranac draft. No issue there. But what you really want to be doing is ordering wings. Seriously...get in car...drive to Prospect...order wings. Look, you can get caught up in wings from Buffalo, Rochester, New York City (not SF because there is not a good wing in this entire city...although at least Kezar makes an effort)...whatever. They all take a back seat to what you get in almost every establishment in Syracuse and Utica. Let's put it this way...it's HARD to be at the top or near the top (which Tavern on the Gorge is) in the wing category in Central NY. Just WAAAY too much competition and people in CNY like their wings. But Tavern on the Gorge...they get a high seat in the Top 5 category and my debate upon leaving the bar was whether or not they were number 1. Wing sauce is apparently a tough thing. I don't think it's a tough thing, but to most bars and restaurants it's essentially the toughest thing they must do. NOTHING varies more establishment to establishment than a chicken wing. Certainly there are some places trying to put their own spin on it (90% of these folks are just making a mistake btw). Not a good idea fyi. The wing sauce at TOTG is as close to perfect as your going to get. Depending on who you talk to, you'll get differing opinions on wing sauce. But in general, the diehards know the base recipe and an ingredient that can have a major impact is butter/margarine. So those wings sauces you see that have sort of a heavier texture (heavy being almost creamy)...they crank up the butter/margarine. Not a bad thing. The place in direct competition with TOTG does this and those wings are ridiculous as well. But TOTG does things a little differently and what you end up with is a sauce with slightly less creaminess and amazing tang. And they don't skimp on the heat...in fact, they dial it to perfection. Don;t worry about going in and having to order mild because you don't. If you don;t want to go hot...go medium...that's fine as well. But just know that Upstate does it's wings the right way...in a fryer, with ridiculously good sauce. TOTG has it nailed. Great place to grab a couple of UC's or a Saranac and eat wings. These are great wings. Period.

We were seated immediately which was awesome seeing as it was 4th of July weekend. We ordered the spinach and shrimp dip for an appetizer and we ate that up immediately. My boyfriend got a bacon cheeseburger which he thought was really good and cooked perfectly (medium rare fyi). I chose the drunken chicken which was huge and the chipotle mayo was a nice addition! Overall very good and filling. Slickers is always a good time with friendly customers and staff. I've never had a bad experience here!

We didn't realize they were attempting to close the section to the left. We waited about 25 mins. Some other families arrived with 4 and were seated immediately. We were finally seated. 10 minutes after we were seated I went back to the hostess and asked who are server is since we still didn't have drink orders. It was the server that was serving the table next to us. She never said, "oh I'll be right with you", even after she went to that table 5 times. They kept asking for drinks and crackers and more items. After I approached the hostess I saw them flag her down and ask her to serve us, not sure if she was supposed to go home, on break or what the breakdown with service happened to be. After the hostess flags her down she comes up to our table and asks for drinks, no apology for the wait or having to flag her down to get service. I said we have been here for 10 minutes, we are ready to place our full order. We order everything. It takes 11 minutes to bring 5 waters, 2 sodas, and 2 bottles of beer. This is after the place has now cleared and is quiet inside. 85% of the tables and bar are empty. 28 minutes later our food arrives. She never came back to ask for refills. She had two tables at this point, ours and a family of 4 behind us. After the food was delivered and we were eating I glanced over to the bar to see the manager, hostess, bar tender all eating chips and dip at the bar due to it all slowing down. The server came right over to ask if everything was ok and began leaving before we could answer. We would like more drinks. Buser never cleared our table. I had to put dirty dishes on the table being cleared next to us. Service was negative stars. I have two stars because the food was really good, the environment was ok. Some cobwebs in corners and the building is a little shabby, but it goes with the vibe. I would rather have stellar service and ok food than great food and not great service.

The seafood options were pretty extensive, and we wanted to try all of it! Went with the clam chowder, salad and some garlic and butter shrimp - not picture a slice to go! Salad was good, big enough to split, the chowder was excellent, the shrimp was very tasty and a good slice as well. With plenty of tasty beers on tap, this place really had everything going for it. Though it was later at night, our service was great at the bar. Solid spot overall and I definitely made sure to recommend to other folks from out of town in the area looking for a great lunch/dinner or even a late night slice.

After reading Yelp reviews we decided to try the Philly cheesesteak and it was 10/10!! Fresh, hot, plenty of toppings on a hot crusted bun! We also had the SRQ chips! They were SOOO good. If I were to get them again I'd ask for extra balsamic. Personal preference. The Sunday Funday Special was large cheese pizza and 10 wings. $18.99 The pizzas was good (my husband loved it) I thought It needed more sauce. It was thin crust and I reheated leftovers in air fryer and added red sauce and it made all the difference! I really liked it the second time around with a little more sauce! We got the two wing sauces that the review recommended. The House whiskey sauce & the orange teriyaki sauce. They were both phenomenal. I honestly can't pick a favorite. I would order both sauces again! We were kind of bummed that they no longer had sweet potato fries, but the SRQ chips were an excellent replacement! Made us forget about the sweet potato fries immediately! We got waters to drink... All of that food and our (cash) bill was $49!! Saving 1.50 by not using a card. The servers were very good. They basically both ran the entire dining room and bar flawlessly and with great attitudes!! I'd highly recommend!!
