My swing has improved substantially after just one lesson with Jim Hassey. I can't wait for my next one! My story: I recently picked up golf again after 25 years of nothing (I wasn't very good back then either). I looked at YouTube and read books and thought I knew what I was doing, but I didn't see improvement. Part of it was the varied and sometimes completely contradicting information in the books and videos, which confused me and messed with my head. Finally I had the time to really focus on my swing, and I wanted to start with professional help before I continued to cement bad habits. I'm glad I saw Jim Hassey's sign at the JR Southbay Golf Driving Range and made an appointment. Before my appointment he sent me an email asking if I had a video of my swing to send him. I was not comfortable with the idea of filming myself, but I was serious about improving. It was time to be honest with my skills if I really wanted to improve. I set my phone to record my swing, did a few of them, and emailed what I thought were the "best". I didn't expect to hear from Jim until our scheduled lesson later in the week. Surprisingly, I received a link to a private YouTube that Jim made using my video side by side with video of some of the greatest names in golf. It was an amazing breakdown of fundamental issues that I was doing wrong. He effortlessly talked to me through the video calmly and clearly and never made me feel ashamed or hopeless...and we had not even had my lesson yet! He used video examples and whiteboard illustrations so well it was like one of the sportscasters on the Golf Channel or ESPN. It's hard to see yourself on video, but if you want to improve, you have to do it. When my actual lesson started, Jim was ready for me and we got right to it. He had already seen my swing on video so he had a good plan of attack. He was patient, supportive, clear, and consistent. He had video set up on site for instant feedback along with perfect examples of what he was working towards. He went over about 5 key components of my swing. Almost all of it was slow and methodical....think "wax on wax off" from The Karate Kid. I only hit a few balls the whole hour. Afterwards I sat in my car and wrote down as much as I could remember. This is the amazing part: After the lesson Jim continued to put together a video review of the lesson, and asked me to continue to film myself as I work on my swing. He included additional videos to compliment what we discussed in person. I practiced every day and submitted video of my progress. I was better but still not "feeling it". Jim was able to pick out a couple of things from the videos I sent that I still needed to tweak, and eventually...things started to click. I went to the driving range yesterday, and my swing finally started to feel GOOD, and my hitting consistency, aim, and distances were probably the best they've ever been. Even the guy in the stall next to me couldn't believe that I had a swing like that after only 1 week. Here is my advice to you (if you've read this far). Just do what Jim suggests, and forget about what you've always done, or saw on YouTube, or heard from the guy in the stall next to you at the driving rage (Oh... Never ever tell someone at the driving range that you are new to playing because they will share all of their "tips" and just confuse you). Take his lessons to heart and practice practice practice....but check back with him to make sure you are 1.) still doing the fundamentals correctly but 2.) haven't developed a new issue. read more

What an amazing instructor! After watching me take a few practice swings, Jim was able to quickly spot where my swing needed most help and we focused on correcting it. I recently signed up to take a golf lesson with Jim Hassey. I am so glad I allowed myself to become teachable. I love the game of golf. It's and amazing game. I've experienced a lot joy and frustration as well. In just one lesson Jim pointed out several things about my golf swing that was the cause of some of my frustrations. This is my second post as I played my first round after one lesson with Jim. My old hand position both at address, and impact was at best a sad affair of chunks and thin shots. This was leaving me with dissatisfaction of whether I should stop playing golf ,and go back to bowling. Ha Ha. With Jim's explanation and drills, and a large bucket of balls, I was able to break into the 80's, and shave about 5-10 strokes from my game. This hasn't happened for some time..Instead of always putting 10-20 footers for pars, I was was finally putting birdies for a change..Does my game need help, yes. But with my new power, I have renewed enthusiasm to get better ,and maybe get some scores into the 70's with Jim's help. Do I recommend Jim's teaching, with a resounding yes. read more

To tell you the truth... I was very skeptical of the lesson... My grip and swing was completely changed. It was uncomfortable and I couldn't hit the ball. Before I dismissed it, I decided to work on it the next several days, watching the video of my lesson and trips to the range. Then I took it on the golf course. Using what Jim taught me, I was able to eliminate the slice and was more confident with the driver. The swing and grip is more comfortable now. Wow! I went from not hitting the ball to hitting it not only every time, but straight, and so much more consistently. My husband couldn't believe his eyes the next time we went to the range. After just ONE lesson!!! The first few minutes may feel awkward at first, but stick to it! Don't give up! Then, practice it at home. I love how patient and passionate he is about teaching. He truly takes the time to correct your swing plane and provides detailed information on how to correct it. Golf was never my thing but now I really enjoy it thanks to JIm! I took his golf class through Grossmont Adult School in January and then again in March of this year - because I really enjoyed it and when you see vast improvements it gets addicting. Even though the class size can make it difficult to have enough attention from the instructor, Jim tries to spend some time with everyone. What I like best about taking Jim's class is that you start with the basics and then when you're more comfortable with your swing, he'll make it a little more challenging by adding an extra detail to focus on...which at the time you're like why didn't you tell me to do that in the first place-- but like always there is a reason why he does this. Jim wants you to learn why the ball goes where it goes and how to make it go where you want it to go. He works with you on every little detail and it's great that he has the patience to do so. read more

Had my first lesson with Jim yesterday 9/10/2014. It was a great experience, I have been playing golf on and off for the past 4 1/2 yrs. I thought that I would not be able to change my old bad habits, but Jim provided me with some good tips on my swing setup and alinement. I recently took my first lesson with Jim. He watched me warm up and then started with an explanation of his theory on the golf swing. I will admit that I was unsure of the swing positions that I was shown at first, but make sure you stick with it even if it's awkward at first. It took almost the entire hour to start to break down the bad habits I had acquired over the years in my golf swing. But by following the 4 steps to the swing that Jim presented to me, it started to click. I was now making a swing that truly came from the inside and hitting an actual draw instead of an over the top pull or a weak slice. I played a round the day after my lesson and had the best ball striking round I have had in years, if not the best I have ever had. I brought my ball flight down and created a much more penetrating ball flight. An added bonus was the added yardage with the driver due to the consistent contact and correct swing path. As a former college and professional baseball player, I had all of the problems that come with the golf swing being dominated by the right hand. All of the things that felt powerful in my golf swing were actually making me lose power, and Jim showed me the correct process and motion to the swing and create true effortless power. I would and already have recommended Jim to any golfer I know regardless of ability. A true thank you to Jim for helping me discover the way to effortless power and the correct positions in the swing. An added note, the price of a lesson with Jim is very affordable. I have paid much more for a lesson with no video (which Jim sends you via email) and not even close to the amount of information. read more
