Recently visited Hatch & Sons at The Little Museum of Dublin on St. Stephen's Green. Walk down the external steps into the basement of 15 St. Stephen's Green into a v cute little courtyard. Really old fashioned fireplace takes centre stage as you walk in the door (you can just about make it out in the above photo!) and an entrance that's looks like it should be the front of someone's house leads you to another seating area. It looks like a house drawn by a child as they imagine a house with windows on either side of the door.. Afraid my fiancé refused to take a photo to share as I couldn't get a good angle from my seat but if you decide to visit you'll see what I mean. We got a pot of filter coffee. I ordered the bakers basket (brown soda bread, scone & half a blaa - all toasted & served with butter and jam or marmalade).Fiancé ordered porridge and we (rather boldly) decided to have dessert at breakfast and ordered an apple streusel cake!!! Absolutely wonderful. Came for breakfast and had the Baked Eggs and they were both beautiful and delicious! The bread is soft and chewy, the bacon is flavorful, and the sausage is crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. All the servers were polite and sweet. Well, it is probably worth like 3.5 stars to me, but I am in a good mood. Some friends recommended the place, so we had brunch there. Not really expensive, but when you first look at your plate, you think 'wow, the quantity is really small'. Unlike a lot of NY brunch places where coffee and orange juice, etc., are included, here, do not hesitate to order various things on the menu. So not expensive, but then you do not get much to eat. In the end, it is ok because the food is rich and you are full. Food was good, chees in particular, but bread a bit too dry. Service was cool but seats and tables really not clean. The building is beautiful, and if the weather is nice, there is a terrace. A lot of seating inside with several rooms. I'm gonna start by saying that if you're looking for a traditional Irish breakfast or brunch, you may have to look elsewhere...but if you're looking for a hipster dining spot with kimchi pork sandwiches, smoked fish boards, large slabs of bacon above a mattress of perfectly fried eggs, then this can be the spot for you. I came here with my wife on our honeymoon to sample a little bit of Dublin cuisine and I really liked all of our meal (see above). The sandwich was perfect and unique, and something that I did not expect to find in Dublin. The soda bread that came with most of our dishes was decent, but a bit dry. I was hoping for the amount of coffee that I was served that the cost would be a little cheaper, but I'm more familiar with the US brunches. Came into Dublin for our first trip to Ireland. Dropped off the bags at the hotel and looked for a breakfast spot. This place did not disappoint. We got fresh lemonade and orange juice. We all got the same meal. Two eggs, bacon sausage and soda bread. The sausage and bacon was amazing! Soda bread was awesome, not too dry. I'm vegan so looking at the menu at first I wasn't sure what I would order but when I asked the server, she was very helpful and let me know they could make a vegan avocado toast with mushrooms, tomatoes and greens. Delicious sandwiches on delicious bread. We dropped by to grab two sandwiches to go on a Saturday around 1 PM, and the bread was light and fluffy, while the fillings were fresh and complimented each other quite well. Dropped in here on a sunny Saturday afternoon just after the lunchtime rush. We decided it was a little chilly to sit outside, although it's lovely that you have the opportunity to, and it's a nice little suntrap. The interior is lovely, old granny's kitchen style, and I liked how the cakes were displayed out on one of those old fashioned kitchen counters. My lunch buddy decided on the breakfast skillet, being a connoisseur of Irish breakfasts, and I myself had a goats cheese, roasted root vegetables, seed and beetroot relish blaa (or bap as I remember calling them as a kid :)). Although it was very tasty and satisfying, I expected more for the price it was. Pushing on 6 euro for a small sandwich is a bit much. My buddy enjoyed the breakfast (two baked eggs, rashers and a sausage in a little skillet, but also felt that there could have been more for the price it was (7.50) and having a hearty appetite commented to me that he would have liked black pudding, tomato/mushrooms or even beans as an addition! We both thought his flat white was delish, but my mug of black coffee was a bit on the colder side than I like when it arrived and didn't have the best flavor. Overall a good experience, wonderful to see so much Irish produce on the menu, and a lovely location for a brunch with friends (I'll be back!), but there is perhaps better value for money to be found elsewhere. read more

This place is really cute but I was disappointed by the options on the menu, there weren't many. The portions are also quite small, so one order won't be enough for those who are truly hungry. I tried the porridge, which was fluffy and good. Solid with the honey provided, but would consider before coming again. Really enjoyed our brunch here. Just off Stephen's, Green we weren't expecting what we found. It reminded me of walking into an authentic country kitchen. There's no sign of any of the expected industrial cooking equipment, in fact, everything seems to be cooked in 2-3 small, hidden ovens, under the counter. The menu is a perfect mix of hearty dishes like Irish strew, fresh, generously portioned, salads and all day brunch. I got double baked eggs in a skillet with bacon and sausages and it was really tasty; a fish salad and stew were also tried by our party with thumbs up all around. Was going to give it four stars but added an extra 1 for originality and giving people in a busy city a break from it all for a while. read more

I don't know how I've walked past this place so many times and NEVER gone inside! I'd heard their brunch was supposed to be quite good, so a friend and I popped in on a Sunday afternoon. We arrived at 11:30, and they were busy enough for how small the space was. Luckily for us there was one last 2-top table left, so snatch it up we did. Despite the restaurant being busy, the service was quite quick, but not too pushy either. I looked at the menu and realised, oh my goodness... filter coffee?! YES! American style bacon?! Yes! So, I ordered myself a coffee and their double baked eggs. The coffee was so nice, and served in a cup that reminded me of the old cafes/diners from back home. I just wanted to sit there and hold my warm mug in my hands! The food came out, and it was SO much food! The sausage was super tasty, and I was pretty excited about my american bacon. Yes, it's crispier than your normal rashers, but that's just how the different bacon is. The soda bread? Fantastic! Everything about this meal was amazing. My only wish, was that for brunch they had more brunch options. The "breakfasty" options on the menu felt like either a small breakfast you'd have before rushing into work, or they were more lunch style options. The double baked eggs were really the only full meal made out of "breakfasty food". I didn't have a scone, although my friend got some to go. 7 euros for 2 scones to take away... a bit pricy in my opinion. Either way, good spot for brunch. Love the American touches. Can't wait to get back there for lunch or dinner. The lunch items look great and weren't too expensive. About 6 euros for blaas, and about 12 euros for a full main... even for dinner! Bottom line: Wish the brunch menu was separate. Scones were expensive, but the sandwiches and mains are pretty well priced and look very tasty. read more

But I do believe it's because the location on yelps map is wrong, it shows it not as far up the street, but it is another stop light ahead. Now with that out of the way, my wife found this place for us to eat while visiting Dublin, and I am glad she did. Super cool decor with a farm to table type vibe. It looks like the kitchen is open to the dining area, but it's more of their service area, still cool To see them working right in front of you. My wife had this roasted chicken breakfast sandwich which was just awesome she said, and I ordered a beautiful savory double baked eggs breakfast in this cool tiny skillet. Seems like a fun little place in an excellent location, but it left little to be desired. I ordered the Irish breakfast which was pretty tastey. Came in a little skillet and was a good amount of food. Not too much, not too little. My wife ordered a sandwich and a salad. The salad never came. And at that point we decided not to mess with it. I wish they had more options of sides. The sandwiches look good, but not enough just to get a sandwich. The service was very slow. Took us about 10 minutes to have our order taken, and then no one ever came by to check on us, otherwise we would have asked for the salad. They charged us for the salad, so then I reminded them about the mistake. They weren't too upset, so I won't be rushing back to try it again. We keep coming back here, mainly because by the time we've walked to the LUAS and taken it into town, we realize that we're fearsomely hungry. So far, it's all good - their blaas are gorgeous, their all-day mini-Irish breakfast (served in a mini-skillet, even) is hearty without being overwhelming, and even something as simple as their Baker's Basket (consisting of a scone, a tea track slice, and a piece of their brown bread) goes down a treat. The also pre-pack brown paper bags full of blaas at lunchtime for pre-ordering offices in the area - sound. Typically, as the seating is slightly squished and nothing to write home about, I'd usually dock a star. The Hatch Cafe is located in a basement but if your eyes are always drawn to menus pinned on railings, then you'll spot this place! We were seated in the back room which was a little dark for a lunchtime but this was quickly forgiven once I took a bite of my blaa... Now you may ask, WTF is a blaa...it's a soft roll from Wexford and it's just the most perfect sandwich bread because the filling oozes into the bread, which picks up all of the flavours. It's served on a wooden board - this is a novelty no more but I do like this rustic way of eating. I chose a salt beef blaa with 'slaw plus onion relish and rocket; it totally hit the spot. I found myself thinking, 'this offers so much more than a pre-packed and fridge-chilled shop-bought sarnie, and the price is virtually the same....score!' read more

I love the feel of this place, you can see that you are in what was the kitchens and servants quarters of a big house in a past life; the new decor added to make this a restaurant, have been chosen to fit in - right down to the huge table / island from which the staff work to make the coffees and sandwiches. We were in for a quick bite, I opted for the bacon blah which was exactly what it said it was - but I was presuming it would have a bit of salad or something in it too... my bad, it was tasty but could have done with a little something extra. I've been here a couple of times now, and I still get excited about the menu. You walk down the steps into the basement of the Little Museum of Dublin into the old kitchen of this Georgian house to be confronted by a big cook's table piled high with delicious scones, cakes and bread. Talk about inviting! The first time I ate there myself and my companion both ordered the baked eggs. Out it came in little skillets on wooden boards; baked eggs, tomato, sausage and bacon accompanied by delicious brown bread and butter from Glenilen. It was fantastic. My companion ordered an Americano, which he said was one of the best he'd ever had and I ordered a whole pot of loose leaf Barry's Tea, which arrived in a lovely teapot and didn't spill! We've eaten there since and had the porridge, scones, and blaas and it has all been very tasty. The only complaint I would have is that the tables in the front room are very close together but that is a small thing. The food more than makes up for it. read more

Disappointing.. Have wanted to try this place out for awhile now and finally today, was my day. As we walked in could see the place was buzzin, plenty full and staff whizzing around... Seated after a short 1 or 2 minute wait and was super excited to see the menu and get munching however once seated, it pretty nuch went downhill from there. After 15 minutes seated, nobody came near us, no offer of a menu, no offer of table water, no nothing... We finally had to grab a waiter and ask for menus. Ok, me thinks, all will come good... Unfortunately not! We ordered within 2 minutes of getting the menu, hunger was taking over so wanted to order in asap... 1 breakfast and 1 spicy beef blaa, potato salad with a cup of tea and a flat white and then the waiting started again... Over 15 minutes went by before the tea/cofee arrived to our table albeit with an apology from the server about the wait, excusing that they were very busy and rushed off their feet all day. Sipping away, I should felt the time ticking over yet again, oh no, where is my food! My coffee was now finished at this point, it was in total from the time we arrived into the place, 50 mins before our food made an appearance... Quite frankly, we were just about to stand up and leave when it arrived to the table. Hallelujah!!! That hallelujah was sorted lived, they forgot the potatoe salad which I had to ask after and then, as I got into the spicy beef blaa I ordered, @ €6.50 was shocked to see just a very thin, barely there slice of beef on the blaa, the volume was coming from the cheese and rocket though really feel at that price, come on, give me some meat, amongst the relish and mayo I couldn't actually taste the beef cause there really was just not enough of it! When wrapping up the bill, we did mention at the counter we were disappointed with the timings which they apologised, though I think it was more of an awkward, sorry as opposed to really knowing how to deal with negative feedback. I had read about this place and went to try it on Sunday at around lunch time. I enjoyed the very friendly welcome and efficient staff. My friend and I had the same thing which was the baked eggs with bacon, sausage, tomato and soda bread. It's a fun to have a fry in a pan! I wish there were more egg options on the menu, though. The food was excellent quality, well cooked and well presented, The atmosphere is relaxed. The place looks lovely. I had a really good time and I will definitely be back again. Price wise: fry + coffee + orange juice + chocolate ice cream for dessert = 17 euros. Win! They have tables outside, and two rooms inside. I suppose groups can arrange a larger table. read more

Well this was lovely. Walking in I took the place for a cross between a school and a kitchen. The bright airiness was cheerful and the 'open' kitchen area was very interesting. It was great to watch the staff buzz around while I sat relaxing with a coffee (not great for them as , though they were cheerful they were super busy!) The menu was nice. Fairly hearty looking stuff. The brunch menu was sufficient and there seemed to an emphasis on Blaas, which made me wonder...do they ship them in fresh each day? Have they somehow managed to circumvent the protected 'Blaa' status? My nosy questions aside, I went for the porridge and was overwhelmed with the quantity. it was delicious but was bordering on a chore after a while. I didn't finish it. The coffee was delicious and this is clearly a busy spot, wel placed and buzzing! On our way to the Little Museum upstairs (go there, by the way, it's great!), we popped into the coffee shop first. We ordered Blaas with sausage (for my wife) and bacon for me together with a pot of coffee with hot milk. For the uninitiated, a blaa is a soft, white breadroll unique to Co.Waterford. A very nice dining room and friendly, attentive service added to a most pleasant experience. The food was just what we needed and the coffee excellent. Very reasonable at €14, my other half left an outrageously generous tip. We will be back. read more

Although the menu isn't the most varied, there's no two ways around it - you're here to eat the blaas. These are so good you might want to order two servings. The wait staff are extremely friendly and the rustic setting itself suits the food perfectly. They are obviously made with fresh ingredients, really tasty and absolutely good for snack. They also have main dishes which looks delicious but didn't try. Only a minor detail, the restaurant Is in the basement so pretty dark when we were there early afternoon. Sometimes we happen upon things and it turns out great. Other times, not so much. The Hedge Row salad with honey mustard dressing was lackluster at best and though it sought greatness, it failed. Bland and tasteless, the sweet potatoes could not muster the troops and contributed nothing but confusion to an already desperate situation. I wouldn't usually be as negative but service was poor. So happy we found this place and were lucky enough to be in town on an evening when they were open! The best word to describe our experience is loving: the menu is small yet very carefully curated, and the service was attentive and sweet. The cheese plate is an excellent choice - it came with a large fluffy dollop of mild and creamy fresh goat cheese, two kinds of Gouda, crispy oat cakes and chutney. While the beef and Guinness stew was warm and comforting, the accompanying brown Irish bread stole the show. We dropped by this place today after always having it on our list of places to try but never quite making it there. We were very impressed. We sat inside the main room which has a very kitchen feel with a giant kitchen island in the middle of the room. There is also a front small outdoor area and an outdoor area in the back as well. Today was an amazing day and the outdoor seats were filled. We were suspecting that they may not be able to accommodate us with a 2 year old given the flight of steps down into the restaurant but this was not the case. We saw at least 3 other families with children. They have these adaptable baby chairs that fit over the existing chairs. I would say that the food probably took longer than most places however it was quite busy and they do manage to fit quite a capacity of people given the various rooms and so I will not fault too much there. They do bring out water right away and coffee/tea very quick as well. Service was also very friendly. My wife and I ordered the Irish breakfast which consists of baked eggs, sausage, bacon all served in a skillet and a few slices of brown bread and creamy butter. It was delicious and I will definitely be back for more. Serving size was good as well and I think it was under 8€. We got the porridge for my son which came with a generous serving with nuts and plenty of honey as well. I am excited to have a new favorite brunch place in town. read more

Lovely place for afternoon tea. I shared two sandwiches with my girlfriend, the beetroot & goats cheese and the corned beef. Both delicious and at €6 well priced for where you are. Really nice place, with a great atmosphere,although the staff looked at me like I had two heads when I asked them if there were nuts in the sandwiches because of allergies. Still though, the place is warm and comfortable. With a giant counter where food is prepared right in front of the seating area, they have laid it out as if you are sitting in someone's kitchen. I think I'm just miffed that, at lunchtime, I've shelled out €24 and I'm hungrier than when I came in. Everything edible is good here and when the server told me what was in the special, chicken casserole, I was hooked! My guest had the cheese board. When the cheese board arrived, with a mountain of brown and white bread and slices of lovely cheese, I was impressed. Not so with the chicken. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious, but I felt that they only wanted to give me a taste, rather than a meal. For €12, I wanted at least a little bread to sop up the sauce, but I had to go up to the counter to ask for it, even though the staff were not being rushed off their feet!
