Green Chile Cornbread Fritters are great now! The owners really care about getting things right. Huge kudos to them both for this. Initially on our first visit, the fritters were dense. Told them they weren't great, they admitted they were having a hard time with the recipe --- and then they worked at it until they found out how to make them light - and now on our fourth visit, they are delicious with their honey butter! And the churro bites with cinnamon. WOW. Hot from the oven, light, fluffy, so good I couldn't stop eating them:) The onion rings with BBQ sauce are also the BEST ever anywhere in the area. Plus, did i say Emily makes an amazing prickly pear mocktail? Oh yes. And they were super kind to us during our birthday celebration, and treated us to the churros. We came here for brunch because we didn't want to wait for From Scratch - it was practically empty and served brunch, so it seemed perfect! We have now learned that there is a reason this place is empty! Very cute interior but we waited over an hour for one waffle and huevos rancheros, and were so disappointed when the food came out. I couldn't believe we were paying $18 for what amounted to two tortillas and two eggs. Waffle was also child sized. Plating is bad. The wait staff (who I don't blame for the slow wait, that's not their fault), added insult to injury by joking multiple times about how much we must have loved the food because of how quickly we ate it. I wanted to tell them that we ate so quickly because I was on the point of passing out by the time the food arrived, and because the portion size was fit for a middle schooler. If you're reading this, just hold out for From Scratch. You'll probably wait just as long but actually get a full meal out of it. Two stars because the waiters seemed to realize this was a mess. We were excited to try a new restaurant. All the food was not good and we were so disappointed. The chips and salsa were great. The taco plate came with rice that was dry and crunchy. Maybe under cooked or the bottom of the pot? The beans had no flavor and even though there was salsa on the tacos, the meat was very dry. We noticed the buns of the burger and chicken sandwich were a bit over toasted and the Salad came with canned corn and guacamole on top instead of nice chard corn from the cob and fresh avocado. The drinks are not pictured but tasted of mainly juice or maybe they were a premix. Everything had the Carmel price point but nothing was worth going back for or paying for. We did order the appetizer of cornbread fritters that came out black. They were definitely left in the over for too long and dryer than scones. It is surprising when a restaurant has a hard time with every meal. read more

We were anxious to try this new restaurant. My husband and I love Mexican food. We both ordered a drink;a beer and a margarita. We ordered the nachos with Al pastor. They were okay. I had the chili relleno with rice and beans. It was mediocre. My husband had a wet burrito with carnitas. It arrived at our table cold. He was told that the sour cream and guac cooled the other ingredients down. They graciously remade his burrito and put the cold ingredients on the side. I'm not sure if my expectations are high since we live in the central valley and always have awesome Mexican restaurant choices. We were not impressed. There were very few people in the restaurant for a Sunday night. We know of other Mexican restaurants in the area we prefer over this restaurant. Had a super time at Hatch in the Barnyard, Carmel, with fantastic company measured equally by the food and service. I had the signature Hatch burger was absolutely phenomenal--a perfectly cooked, savory smash patty, as described by Edible Monterey Bay. It's great to see new places opening up with a point of view. Food was good, service was great, location and atmosphere's warming. We had the benefit of great company and even bumped into our old friends Sandy and John which underscored to us how attractive the right feel, value and causal dining can be for continued the locals interest. Only suggestion is a blender Carlos but seriously, major thanks and props to you for looking after us last night ! We did mis the eggs On this trip but will try the next time we are in, oh and we had a Nutella Churros to share which i didn't get a chance to photograph for yum yum reasons ! Saw a photo of this burger in Edible magazine and just had to try it out. They're still new so working out some kinks but the service was super friendly and the drinks were priced right so give them some time to iron them out! Hatch is located in the Barnyard and is well decorated and has a great southwestern vibe. There is a large bar and a few seats outside. There was even an indoor fire that I'm gonna have to come back to have a couple drinks by. Speaking of drinks a $10 paloma in this economy?? In a world of $20 cocktails this was a relief. My wife went with the classic marg which at $12 was still cheaper than an ASB Mai Tai IPA! Both drinks had good flavor but also felt like they could have used a touch more tequila. We both ended up getting the burger and it was super tasty. The meat really came through and wasn't overpowered by the hatch green salsa. Just don't put it down! It's almost impossible to pick back up in one piece. Overall well priced and a good vibe! read more

Food: The food was tasty! We had chicken wings for appetizer. Both the Buffalo and BBQ come with a lot of sauce, making it so delicious. Ask for extra napkins! Our main dishes were the Hatch Chicken Burrito, Chicken Protein Bowl and Street Chicken Tacos with a basket of fries. The serving portions were just the right amount. My mom and sister had to even take their leftover food to go. It's obviously not authentic Mexican food, but it's still good. Service: It was slow in the beginning. We came on a Monday evening. Our waiter did not come to our table till about 15 - 20 minutes after we were seated, but he did apologize, and he was hilarious! He had a great sense of humor. I wish I had gotten his name. He had glasses and a beard. Very nice guy! Cracking jokes here and there. That's why I am not giving four stars and still giving five! Ambiance: There is both indoor and outdoor seating. We were originally in line at From Scratch restaurant and were told the wait would be more than an hour. While walking around nearby, we came across this restaurant and were pleasantly surprised when they said they could seat all 11 of us right away. The restaurant wasn't crowded, and the staff was incredibly friendly, so we were happy to give it a try. The food did take quite a while to come out, but the staff was very apologetic after explaining that our order had accidentally been dropped and they had to remake everything. When the food finally arrived, it was absolutely worth the wait. My wife and I shared the quesadilla, and we both thought it was delicious. Everyone in our group really enjoyed their meals and agreed the food was excellent. The restaurant ended up giving us a discount for the delay, but because of their outstanding hospitality and kindness, we were more than happy to leave an extra-generous tip. Yelp recommended I try this new restaurant and we thoroughly enjoyed it. A friend and I had some catching up to do so we met for brunch. When I say we had a leisurely brunch, I mean it and the staff at Hatch were so kind and accommodating. Brad was our first server and helped answer questions and guide us through our menu selections. I had the nachos because why not?! They were delicious. My friend loved her huevos rancheros. We started with classic margaritas which were tasty, though my friend thought it was a little sweet. We moved on to the Gruet blanc de blancs--nice touch having this option to tie into the New Mexico theme. That was a perfect pairing for the sopapillas. My husband happened to be nearby so he joined us and had the tacos. He is from San Diego so he is very selective about tacos. He said the meat was very good, especially the carne asada. He did say it would have been better with two tortillas per taco instead of one so they don't break apart as easily. Overall, excellent experience and we will be back. Tip: you can't tell from the outside but the inside space is SO cute and there are many tables. There's also a nice bar with a fireplace just inside. We recently tried Hatch in Carmel, a relatively new restaurant, and unfortunately our experience wasn't great. I asked for sparkling water and was brought a bottle. My husband asked for regular water but was also brought a bottle, so we ended up spending $16 on water alone. I understand bottled water can be standard in some places, but my husband was surprised since he specifically asked for regular water. For food, I ordered a burrito bowl and paid extra to add meat. The dish cost $22 and was served in a small soup bowl with maybe (a max) 2-3 tablespoons of meat. For that price, the portion size and overall value just weren't there. The ambiance also didn't quite match the pricing. It felt more like a Chili's or Chevys--dark and a bit hodgepodge--while the menu prices suggested a more elevated experience. We ordered chips and salsa, fries as an appetizer along with my burrito bowl, and our total came out to about $65. To be fair, the flavors were good, which was probably the nicest thing about the meal. But overall, the value just didn't justify the cost, and based on this experience we wouldn't return read more

Finally made it to the new Hatch restaurant in Barnyard last eve with several friends. What a treat. Very friendly and welcoming. Service was superb. Sat on the patio, which was perfect. Very relaxed and casual. Tried several of their cocktails. Spot on. Ordered the corn fritters with the honey butter. They allowed us to forego the fritter platter and order individual fritters for four. The fritters were divine -- crisp outside and fluffy on the inside with a bit of nice spice at the end. The honey butter adds a decadent pleasure. Ordered four different entrees, all of which were a hit. Chili Relleno was nicely battered and flavorful. Black bean burger was scrumptious. The shredded chicken enchilada and the fisherman's enchilada satisfied our hunger for NM food. All of the entrees were accompanied with hatch chili sauce in some form -- either green or red. The hatch chili is what distinguishes NM food from standard Mexican fare. It's flavorful and has just enough bite to let you know its there without overwhelming the flavors of the food. Hatch's hatch chili sauce is so good you'll work to get every bit off the plate into your mouth. The non-burger entrees are accompanied with beans (veggie vs non-veggie or refried option) and rice. The sides are so light; you won't feel stuffed but delightfully satisfied. The only clunker all night was desert. We had come in hopes of finishing off with that most New Mexican of all treats -- sopapillas. Alas, it was not to be. As was explained to us, the chef is still perfecting the recipe and doesn't feel ready to send out an inferior product. Most people accept the flat fried dough "sopapilla," but we came for the pillowy dough that balloons up to form a pocket perfect for drizzling honey into the inside. New Mexicans will insist that it's the altitude that yields the perfect sopapilla, but the crew at Hatch has called in an expert who has a fix for the sea level restaurant. We can't wait to come back and try when they're ready In the meantime, the churros were a nice substitute and allowed us to end on a sweet note. Try it. You'll like it, especially if you're a fan of New Mexico cuisine. read more

Definitely great food. I got the burger and it was made out of prime rib and it was juicy and their special sauce was really good. Chips and salsa was great. Red salsa had a little bit of a kick to it, but it wasn't too much and I had a good flavor and my wife got the protein bowl and she added shrimp in there with mushrooms and she was over the top with the flavor and the size of it and then for dessert we got the Nutella stuffed churros which hit the spot perfectly definitely will be back and the restaurant is super nice all redone and they have a great bar thank you read more

Visited Hatch for the first time on a Friday night. We sat on the patio which was pleasant. Service was friendly and mostly prompt. Margaritas were tasty. The food was just OK - chicken enchiladas were dry and bland. Same for the Call burrito (could have been warmer too). While not totally impressed we'll give it another try. read more

I wish Hatch the best of luck! The al pastor taco, while being nothing recognizable as what I have come to understand as al pastor (Mexican, Californian, or even New Mexican), was truly incredible. Thank you!! Short rib taco tasted more like cabeza to me. Good but a bit too dry. Easy to fix though. The corn tortillas were quite nice! I don't think they need to offer chicken wings. Not bad, just unnecessary and the buffalo sauce felt a bit incongruous with the rest of the signature flavors it seems the restaurant is aiming for. Cornbread fritters could have used more salt and a more aromatic cornmeal blend would be an improvement. Anything served with honey butter is always going to be delicious, however. Southwestern egg rolls were ok. The dipping sauce overpowers the other flavors however so go light. Pinto beans were pretty good. Their rice needs a LOT of work though. Take some notes from someone's abuela to level-up. (I implore the owners and staff of Hatch to order a side of rice and a side of refried beans to-go from Dos Victoria's on Cannery Row. Get your sides to that standard and you'll be killing it.) Chicken in the enchilada was bland and uninspired so I wouldn't order it again. Put that "al pastor" in your enchiladas instead and you'll have a real winner. Red sauce on the enchilada was ok but not my favorite. The green was too sharp. I was missing the bold rounded flavors that normally come from real New Mexican chiles. Salsas were serviceable but again, I kept wanting the pure red and green hatch chile flavors I experienced in New Mexico. Lean into the real hatch chile, Hatch! In all my meal was fine, but I want this place to be great. They're just not there yet. Level up on your beans and rice, put some flavor in that shredded chicken, and make me walk away feeling like I ate sauces and salsas made from real New Mexican hatch chiles. If you can do that you'll have something special. I'm hoping Hatch will grow into their new shoes to become that unique southwestern (and hatch chile) experience missing in our community. Our waiter was great so no reflection on him. The food was HORRIBLE and made us sick. Elote deviled eggs were slimy and tasted spoiled. I came here really wanting to like this place....but I did not. A friend who is from New Mexico had tried it and advised me not to go, but I had to see for myself, and then I completely agreed with her. We came early on a Saturday night and despite there being very few tables, the service was dismal; they forgot our appetizer and it was hard to get any server's attention when we needed something. As others have reviewed, the two entrees that we ordered were boring to look at; just a burrito on a black plate, and not hot at that. Where are the garnishes? Wow...love this new restaurant. Fresh Mex at its finest. Chips were warm, fresh and yummy. Green Salsa excellent, not to salty. Tortilla soup was delicious and the serving was generous. They welcomed us and seated us right away, which was a great start. Someone asked if we wanted drinks shortly after, but it took about 5-8 minutes before they arrived. The drinks were okay and reasonably priced, though I couldn't really taste the tequila. The food was just okay. I ordered shrimp as an appetizer and they came out burned. Since our entrees arrived soon after, we didn't bother sending them back. When our main dishes came out, there were a few issues. The burger was supposed to come with onion rings, but instead we got the small leftover pieces you usually find at the bottom of a frozen bag. This was after they told us they were out of fries. I ordered the fisherman's enchilada, which according to the menu should come with shrimp and pico, but mine arrived without either. The waitress didn't realize it was supposed to include them, and by the time she checked and confirmed I still wanted them, she brought them out on the side. As a result, I ended up eating most of my enchilada cold with warm shrimp and cold pico on the side. She also asked if we still wanted the onion rings that were supposed to come with the burger instead of just bringing them out. When they did arrive, they were also over-fried. Overall, it was hard to really enjoy the food. My husband did say the burger itself tasted good. The décor of the restaurant was very nice, but we probably won't be visiting again for a while.
