We were referred to Haulin Ash by Innovations (where we purchased our wood stoves). We contacted them and left a message and received a reply within 24 hours and made an appointment at that time. We have two wood stoves that get a lot of use. Bob and helper Zachary (?) arrived 10 minutes early and got right to work. We learned that we should Not have gone as long as we did.. we will have them inspected yearly now. I am so glad this is taken care of as we are now good to go just as the temps are dipping down. I really appreciate the service provided to bring our fireplace into the most recent decade. It needed a good thorough cleaning which required the guy to get up on the roof multiple times. They also had to the seal the chimney crown before the rainy season. I forgot his name, but the owner was a pleasure to work with. He came on time on the day he said he would (which I have found is rare for contractors) and spent 4 hours doing the work that had been discussed and agreed upon. Horrible customer service. Bob was condescending, charged us more than quoted, and took the insert out and couldn't put it back in. He told us "it's the best I can do". When my wife and I said it's unacceptable he packed his things up and said "don't ever call me again". He also chipped the brick and didn't tell us... I called to ask if they did gas fireplace inspections and furnace inspections. The receptionist said yes they do both. So a man named Bob came and was immediately condescending to me when he stepped inside my house, telling me to quit talking and LISTEN when i showed him the furnace in the basement. When I started explaining what I needed, all he did was tell me he doesn't inspect furnaces and lectured me about how I need to call a gas or furnace company to have them do it. (I thought that was what I called him for?!) If I tried to get a word in edgewise over his lecturing or ask a question, he would cut me off and say "LISTEN" again. Basically talking to me like I was a child. I am a very polite person so I let this continue on for awhile. Then we proceeded upstairs to "inspect" the gas fireplace. Again he looked at it briefly and stated that I would also need to call a gas or furnace company to do that inspection. I was getting annoyed at this point so I asked him why he came all the way to my home to tell me he doesn't do gas fireplace and furnace inspections, and why would your receptionist even send you here and why does your website say you do, if you really don't? He got more testy with me at that point and made me feel like it was my fault for not calling the right person! So one last thing I mentioned when I made the appointment was if he could clean out my fireplace box vent that hangs on the outside of the house because it had pine needles & sticks in it. So I mentioned that and we went on the top deck to look and he said "it's too high up, I can't clean it. Have someone else do it." I said if a fireplace and chimney service tech can't do it who am I supposed to call? He said rudely- SOMEONE WITH A REALLY TALL LADDER. My patience was wearing thin at this point. Then he heads outside not telling me why so I wasn't sure if he left or was going to actually do something. Then I heard banging around and I go look on my front porch and see him up on HIS REALLY TALL LADDER cleaning my fireplace vent box. I couldn't resist so I said "oh so i guess you DO have a really tall ladder." When he was done he came back in the house to get paid, so I asked why he told me he couldn't clean my vent box and he said because he "didn't want to use his ladder to do it." Well pardon me but I thought this was his job, yet he almost didn't even do it because in his words he "didn't want to". My bill came to $135 and I asked politely that's just for cleaning the vent, you didn't even inspect my fireplace or furnace?! Then he got angry and said "fine I'll leave and you don't owe me anything." He made me feel really stupid and guilty. So I said I'll pay you for cleaning the vent box but you really shouldn't make appointments wasting people's time for inspections you know you don't do. I can't help but feel like he came to my home as a way to make money without caring if he could really help me and he almost didn't even clean the vent box. Now I had to schedule my "2nd" furnace and fireplace inspections from a another company for next week. And I'll have to pay again for that. He did say he would talk to his receptionist about booking appointments for things he can't do. Yup, great idea. I wish I would have just let him leave without me paying when he offered in a rude way (only because I was asking honest questions). But I didn't because again I am too polite. I was almost in tears after he left because he was so downright rude to me. Oh and he actually had the nerve to ask me not to leave a bad review online. I said oh like posting one on Yelp saying "Haulin' Ash is an Ash-hole?" Then I laughed. And I really wasn't planning on writing a review when he left until he asked me not to, because then I realized even he knew he was being rude or he wouldn't have asked me not to leave a bad review. The more I thought about it, the more I decided I didn't want to let this slide and I have never left a yelp review...I started an account just to get this off my chest and warn others. Business owners should be held accountable for their actions when treating customers poorly. read more

Charged me almost $150 and was here no more than 15 minutes total, including introduction, bringing in equipment, payment and paperwork. I couldn't believe it when they guy shined a flashlight up inside, then did a quick suck with a shop vac and said he was done. I was under the impression that the cleaning that they did was something substantial but it was the equivalent of sticking a vacuum hose up a few feet (at most) inside the chimney and wiggling it around. Didn't even bother cleaning up the ash on the bottom of the fireplace. I thought the cost was worth it because they would be on the roof, cleaning the chimney from the inside top, but that wasn't the case. I have the peace of mind that my fireplace is safe, but I think this is highway robbery for the services we received. Will not call them again. read more

Bob inspected and cleaned our wood stove chimney, and overall I had a pleasant experience with Haulin Ash. He was a few minutes early, worked very efficiently and neatly, and was glad to offer information and answer questions I had on wood handling and storage. I was initially hesitant when it took three days to receive a response to the email I sent requesting service, but the message I received from their office manager was very friendly and efficient: offering an appointment time on my requested day, listing the price of the inspection I requested, and specifying other information they needed from me, so that quality of response was appreciated. It's great peace of mind to have confirmation that our chimney was installed correctly, and to know it is cleaned and ready for fall burning! read more

I made an appointment with Haulin' Ash to have my chimney cleaned. I was told it would cost $150 for a cleaning and inspection. When Bob Hand, the owner, showed up, he did a cursory inspection. He looked in the stove, looked down the chimney and told me it would be $450 to clean the chimney. He then charged me $150 for what he had done. I paid him to get him off my property. I tried for several months to find someone else. Finally, a third generation chimney sweep, who doesn't want to be named, came and cleaned my chimney from the stove up. t took him less than an hour and his flat rate was $150. He was very careful and left the place immaculate. I gave him a handsome tip and promised I wouldn't give out his name. SORRY!! Haulin' Ash doesn't deserve any stars. read more

I called to make an appointment to have my chimney and wood stove cleaned. They put me on a waiting list for the area. I live on an island so that makes sense. A month or so later I called back to see if it was going to happen. No response. I called and left another message - they never answer their phone - and said I would find somebody else. They called back immediately and scheduled an appointment. The day of the appointment came and went. I called before office hours were over to see if they were coming. No call back. I called later and told them that I would write a bad review if I didn't hear back from them about why they didn't come when it had been scheduled. They want the business, they don't seem to want the work. I called them last year but it was late in the season. They told me I would have to pay for a full day since it would be a waste of their time to come for one cleaning. So - they don't want us to waste their time, but it is okay for them to waste ours???? DO NOT CALL THEM!!!! After reading some of the reviews, the customer service I didn't get is typical of them. read more

We recently moved into a home with an old wood stove. The previous owners said it was in great condition, but we needed peace of mind. So I called Haulin Ash, spoke to them....told them we needed a full top to bottom inspection, a good cleaning and maybe a quick run down on proper use since there was no manual, etc. I scheduled it and he shows up. He literally pulled out a shop vac, a large brush and a flashlight. He walked out on our deck, looked at the roof (which is 2 stories above deck and you can't see the full pipe from there) and said looks good. I asked a couple of questions about the stove...what some of the levers and whatnot were....he said you can google the manual and it will tell you. I said oh so you don't know? He said well there are over 800 models so I don't know them all. He charged $157 total....for something I could have done! He didn't clean the windows on it, check the seals or gaskets, didn't clean off the underneath part of the top loader that was caked with thick, black soot. I called back and spoke with the lady and told her that everything she said he was going to do wasn't done... My husband was home when the man came back. He basically told my husband the same thing and was argumentative with my my husband. He knew he wasn't getting anywhere with the guy so he had him leave. We called another company and told them what we were looking for and we are SO thankful we had someone else come out!!! Found out there were some warping issues and a broken piece on the stove. He also found so much Ash behind a plate that it was blocking air flow which could have caused severe, potential hazardous issues....such as a fire. This company was here for over 4.5 hours cleaning every inch of our stove, inspecting every single piece. We are SO upset that we paid Haulin Ash even a penny then him saying everything looked great when it WAS NOT! We've been making sure if our friends have asked about our experience, we make sure to not recommend them. read more

These guys are great! Bob was very polite and friendly (he even showed up a little early!). Did a full inspection, thoroughly cleaned out our chimneys and cleaned up any messes created from the cleaning. Took about an hour for two wood stoves. Haulin Ash was awesome to deal with and I will be calling them again next year. read more

I bought wood insert and installation parts and installation labor. The stove never drafted perfectly, but got worse and worse over time, until smoke began to come out from behind the insert. The problem is likely a disconnect. It is dangerous, and I'm sure it was related to improper installation. That would be fine if they were willing to come fix their mistake. I called to ask to have them send someone out to look at it. They wouldn't even come out to look at it. Their reason given was that the service guy was out for 4 months. No recourse. I asked if they could offer any suggestions. "Go somewhere else" was the response. They do not back their products or their service. Avoid them. read more

Felt their prices were reasonable and they did a good job explaining what they were seeing as they did the inspection. After I called to have the recommended repairs done, they sent someone out very quickly and took payment over the phone which was helpful as I didn't have to take time off of work to be there. Bob came out and gave me what I thought was a thorough inspection. He then sent his son who had no clue what his dad wanted him to do. Long story short, I paid well over $1000 for less than 2 hours of labor and the repairs were not done correctly. I still have a significant leak in a rain storm. I had to have a leak detection company come out today. The report and pictures they showed me were horrible. They didn't do the repairs they said they did and the ones they did were not done correctly. I now have more water damage thanks to these guys. I agree with the other comment about supposed "sweeping" too. A look up the chimney and the shop vac. I could have done that myself and it was not included in my repair bill. read more

Had Bob out to do a level 2 inspection of my chimney. Didn't have any problems with that and he seemed knowledgeable. When it came time to pay, I asked if they took credit cards and he said they did. I hand him my card and expected him to open up Square or some other mobile CC processor. Nope, before I could stop him, he takes a picture of it with his phone and says he'll process it later and delete the photo. Super sketchy, but I check my CC statement often and he's already taken the picture, so I let it go. A few days later, a charge shows up for the correct amount. A few weeks go by and I haven't given it a second thought. Then, 17 days after his inspection, I see another charge on my CC for almost $800, the exact amount of the preventative maintenance he had recommended, but I had declined because it was something I could do myself. I called him and told him he had charged me for work he hadn't done. He said he would reverse the charge, but never once apologized. read more
