I've been working with Coastal Farm and Ranch, and several other wood-stove parts suppliers, to purchase the replacement bricks for my Quadra-Fire wood stove. I started the process 4 months ago. Coastal was happy to take my money but I'm still waiting for the bricks with no ETA. In frustration I called Quadra-Fire and asked them what to do. They said to try Hearth and Home in Oak Harbor. I called and talked to Jeanette, the store manager. I told her about my frustration finding the bricks. She said she could have all the bricks cut that day and I could pick them up tomorrow. I couldn't believe how quick she was with the solution. They were about half the price of the kit brick package and they fit perfectly! I've supported this business for YEARS. I just recently had a chimney clean done last week. NEVER had a issue with the service or my chimney. My chimney cover possibly wasn't placed back on correctly. i went to go check my stove since my animals were surrounding it and a BIRD flew out of it! ( FIRST TIME THIS EVER OCCURED RIGHT AFTER THEIR WORK) I am 70 years old!! i called Hearth & Home to ask for someone to come do a courtesy check on the chimney cover and was told no one will do a courtesy check after what they just did last week and was told id have to pay for it! Could not be anymore dissatisfied with this service. The staff is rude and unhelpful. We were told that the installers would be able to take care of everything involved in installation of the fireplace and surround, and they were not. Then, the installers (though professional upon first installation) did not install the four sided surround that i asked for, and was told I was going to receive, and paid for. Upon questioning why we didn't receive the service that we were paying for, a staff member complained about the attitude they were receiving from us. Next, (because it only gets better from here, folks), I emailed their office personnel not once, but twice before I received a response. I gave them two options: either give me the product/service that I was paying for, or give me back my deposit and pick up your equipment. They responded almost a month later offering to fix it. Then two weeks after that (now a month and a half after it was supposed to have been installed correctly the first time), the installers came back. They came back unprepared and cutting metal freehand in my yard, as you can see in the pictures below. The work was sloppy, and the effort was minimal. Overall, this company is generally disappointing. No one seems to really know what they're doing, and the services that they offer are suffering because of that. The two guys from Hearth and Home showed up right on time. They were very efficient, friendly, and clean putting blankets on our new flooring and cleaning out the wood stove and chimney dirt that came down from above. Home sellers beware... Scheduled a gas fireplace inspection in support of a pending house sale. Never had an issue in the 10 years of fireplace use until Hearth & Home came to the house. Unfortunately I was at work during the actual inspection but came home to the following list of issues in the work order left behind: - Pilot light failure - zero clearance seal failure - CO2 leak - residue build up Upon investigation of the unit when I returned home I discovered that the technicians broke the tube leading up to the pilot light and the zero clearance seal towards the top of the fireplace was in pieces. In the 10 years of residence not once had the CO2 detectors signaled any hint of detection of CO2. Upon investigation regarding the "residue build up", I learned it is a completely normal occurence that is a result of an additive that cascade natural gas uses that produces the "sulfur like smell" if you have a leak. The kicker in all this is that the Hearth and Home sent me an estimate stating that it will cost me $8300.00 to conduct the needed repairs (completely new system) to fix the issues they "discovered". (that $8300 estimate did not include the necessary finish work that would be required for drywall and wood work). After taking pictures and proving to the owner of Hearth and Home that their technician is the one that was responsible for the pilot light issue (couldn't prove seal failure issue but given the pilot light proof and obviousness of the seal being in pieces it was clear to me), the owner took responsibility for the technician's "work" and offered to conduct the pilot light repair. I explained that no one associated with Hearth and Home would be allowed in my house again and I conducted the repairs myself and scheduled another inspection with a different heating company. The result of that inspection: "fireplace is a perfect working order". Utilizing Hearth and Home could have cost me $10,000+ if I followed their completely unnecessary recomendation for repair/replacement for the damages that their technician was responsible for, the unfounded claim of a CO2 leak and "residue build up". read more

FIRE! Do not purchase a Hampton biomass pellet stove from this store, does not burn any other fuel than the most expensive wood pellets and only burns those effeciently when ran on high. Stove produces more creosote than any wood stove of any kind I've ever seen or owned. CAUSED A CHIMNEY FIRE after only 3 months of use, if I wasn't home at the time I would have lost my home. When operating the stove it rattles loudly and sometimes had to be shut down in order to sleep. The unit came boken, bad ignitor and after 5 service calls the unit could not be made to operate as advertised and has been sitting since the FIRE. With temperatures in the 20's it took them 3 days to check out the stove after the FIRE and then they only cleaned the chimney. Should have went to Handy's where I bought my previous stoves. read more

I was required to have the wood stove inspected and cleaned when I moved out of a rental house this past weekend. I booked Hearth & Home. They could get the key from rental mgmt and go out to the house while I was at work, which was convenient. They gave one price for an inspection+cleaning, and then said if it didn't need cleaning, they'd knock off $25. I hadn't used the wood stove too much, maybe once every week or two in the winters only, but hey, over 3.5 years, maybe that'd build up. And hey, you never know when people will charge you just because they can. I cleaned out the wood stove best I could, and lo and behold, they didn't charge me for cleaning! A few weeks ago, I had a tech from hearth and Home Oak Harbor come out to check my Lopi wood-burning stove and repair my Town & Country Fireplace which had stopped working, leaving my house quite a bit colder. It cost me nearly $200 to be told that it would (supposedly) be cheaper ($4000 with labor) to replace the Lopi with a gas fireplace than repair and bring it up to code, and that parts would have to be ordered for the repairs to the gas fireplace, necessitating another (expensive) visit from the tech. I was assured that parts would be ordered right away through Hearth and Home. I have phoned three times since then, each time speaking to Ruth. In the first call, she told me that they had 2 of the parts on hand and the third part had been ordered from a distributor. I asked her to find out when we could expect that part to arrive. She said she would call me right back. I phoned back the next day and she said she hadn't heard back but would check again and phone me in a few minutes. That was yesterday. This morning she left a message saying that the part needed was going to cost $315 (not including labor) and had to be pre-paid. I called back and confronted her with the fact she lied about having ordered the part or we would have had this information more than two --very cold--weeks ago. I have also found out since--from a reputable contractor-- that my Lopi stove is fine, just requires a chimney cleaning and spark catcher in front of it. The misinformation and lack of timely follow-through were bad enough. Ruth's outright lying, denial, and trying to blame the distributor negated any possibility of a working relationship with this company. One star is generous. I'm glad to only be out $200, instead of what could have been well over $5000. read more
