We are only here for a few days on business, but this food alone is worth another trip to STL. We started with the croquetas and empanadas, both cooked to perfection. Then enjoyed a side of congri rice, maduros, and their seasonal soup. All magnificent. My Cuban husband said their Cuban sandwich is the best he's had in his life; AND they import their bread from a Cuban bakery in Tampa. We finished our perfect meal with cafe con leche and flan, which were as good as the rest of the meal. The service was warm, friendly and attentive. The owner is amazingly kind, and she cooks with love. It shines through in her food. This creates a cozy environment that quickly becomes addicting. I had a taste for something different for lunch and I noticed this place was across the street from my workplace so I decided to try it! I had the veggie plate and black bean soup The food is very flavorful and the black beans are delicious! The veggie plate consist of yellow rice, yuka and plantains. The staff was very helpful in helping me navigate the menu and made suggestions to fit my dietary needs. The food was prepared and ready in less than 15 minutes. The ambiance is family style seating and very quaint with picture of old style Cuban and old cars. Very cute. There's street parking however parking may be a challenge because the restaurant is near a major hospital and clinics as well as other eateries in the area. I don't usually leave harsh reviews, but our experience at Havana's was terrible from start to finish. When we walked in, the sign said "Please wait to be seated." We waited, but the woman at the front--who seemed to be the manager or maybe an owner--just stared at us silently. No greeting, no acknowledgment. After an uncomfortable pause, she finally gestured vaguely and said we could sit wherever. It felt cold and unwelcoming. Unfortunately, things only went downhill from there. They served Minute Rice--yes, instant rice--which is completely unacceptable anywhere. The entire meal was excessively salty. The plantains and yucca were fried in cheap seed oils, leaving them greasy and heavy. The meat tasted old and slightly sour, like it had been sitting too long. And the sauces were just awful. The mojo sauce served with the yucca was especially disappointing--made with vegetable oil and jarred garlic, instead of fresh citrus, herbs, and real olive oil like it should be. Unassuming place that packs quite a big punch flavor-wise. Came in and was greeted by a very nice lady who answered all of my questions pleasantly. We got the Cuban frita burger with the side of yucca fries (with the mojo sauce). I was completely and utterly blown away by all of the flavors I experienced this day. The chorizo mix in the burger patty was so delectable, and provided such a good hit of umami. Additionally, the shoe-string fries within the burgers (not a gimmick!), added such an amazing texture to the burger. The sauce itself balanced out the rest of the burger and created a very harmonious product. The yucca fries were AMAZING. The outside was SUPER crispy with a very soft and sluffy interior. And finally, the star of the shoe was that mojo sauce. What do they put in there?? It's so addicting I wanted to drink it like a smoothie. Overall, no complaints. Finally! A real Cuban restaurant that serves traditional dishes with love and care. This is a cute hideaway in the West End of St Louis. They have all the traditional dishes but we could only try one. We had the Lechon Asado Moros, and sweet plantains (maduros). I really wanted blacks beans and white rice and they gladly substituted. Thrilled to enjoy some Cuban food, as my hometown doesn't have many Cuban options. I was able to find convenient street parking and snagged one of the last tables. Service was friendly and prompt. They were out of the arroz con pollo which I was most excited to try, and didn't have a back up in mind so I went with the Ropa Veija plate. It was very fresh tasting, it came with black bean soup, fried yucca and plantains. Havana's Cuisine recently moved to their new location at 12 S. Euclid in the Central West End and I'm so glad they did or I may have never discovered this excellent dining spot! They are between Laclede Avenue and Forest Park Parkway on the east side of the street. This is a small restaurant with only 9 tables but they also offer carry out as witnessed by several people coming in to pick up their meals. The restaurant walls are adorned with traditional Cuban straw fedora hats, had a large screen TV playing various Cuban pop bands and was clean and had a very welcoming vibe. The service was fast and very friendly with the chef coming to our table to discuss our meals! I will admit it was around 8:30 PM and they close at 9 PM so that may not happen during their busy time. I ordered the Ropa Vieja Plate, and my wife ordered the Cuban sandwich. I added empanadas, one beef and one with chorizo as an appetizer. We definitely over ordered. (Okay, I did, she didn't!) The food was delicious! My wife stated it was as good as the Cuban sandwich she had in Key West several years ago. The bread is flown in from Tampa and was just about perfect for the sandwich. I enjoyed the shredded beef, black beans and plantains and, as my side dish, I ordered fried cassava root (from the yucca plant). The proportions were very generous and the empanadas were exceptional! They offer a few alcoholic drinks such as the Cuba Libre and we ordered a mojito to share. Amazing! Feels like I'm back home when I am there. Love seeing a family ran business, especially one that reminds me of my own family. They are new to the CWE, so services is a little slower but it sounds like they are getting more staff to help keep up with demand. We ordered the Ropa vieja and arroz con pollo plates and they were both very flavorful. The portions were big; definitely enough food to eat until you're full and still have leftovers to take home. The papas rellenas were delicious, they didn't even need the sauce, but it was a nice to have two different sauces for it. I'ts cozy in there, you're in close quarters but not on top of each other. The folks here seem to be pretty nice and I would definitely return to give them another try although I wasn't super impressed with my order. I got the special with half a Cuban and 1 empanada. The main issue was the amount of grease. When I cut into the empanada the grease just ran out and soaked the paper liner. My Cuban was also kinda greasy- I blotted some off with my napkin. There was lots of meat on the sandwich and I would have loved more pickles (can't have too many of those). It was made on the traditional Cuban bread so that was great! My friend got a salad and it was sizable! She only ate 1/3 of it. read more

My coworker and I ate here for lunch on a workday afternoon. The restaurant was not very busy, so we were able to be seated right away. Our orders were taken right away, and the food was quickly brought out! I ordered my first Cuban sandwich actually. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it was absolutely delicious. Tried this place on a Saturday. Didn't realize it closed at 7, but got there a little after 6 and was excited to try the menu! Parking was a little difficult, but that's how parking downtown is, so I was expecting that! They have a good sized menu but I decided to try the Cuban sandwich. My husband got one of the dishes but I cannot remember what it was called. Overall good came out quickly and was flavorful. My sandwich was huge so I only ate about half of it! Empanadas were really good and came out warm and crispy. Since we got there so late, they were already out of the flan, which I will have to go back for. Service was good. I got the Ropa Vieja and my partner got the Cuban, along with the special rum drink and the Cortadito at the end. Everything was absolutely amazing, the food was so flavorful, seasoned to perfection and balanced well. The plantains were the best I've had in a while- they were slightly charred and cooked on the outside which gave it so much flavor when you bit into them. The fried yucca were salted well and crispy. The chef brought out our food and looked so proud and excited for us to eat it, which in turn made us so excited to try everything. Service was slower. If you're expecting servers to be checking on you often, this isn't the place to go, but they are around to flag down and get service when needed- they just don't smother you like some places do which is nice until you need dessert and the check. The owner of this restaurant just came and did a presentation for our students and was the most gracious, kind and attentive presenter. She brought food from the restaurant and it was amazing. The flavors and variety was delicious and the portions were so amazing for such a reasonable price. It was an honor to hear her story and her storytelling about how she started the business and how she sources her ingredients from around the country is so inspiring. I cannot wait to visit the location and have a meal in her restaurant, but for anyone who is looking for an amazing caterer I fully recommend Havana's cuisine! This place has some cool wizardry going on. When you step through the door, you are transported into a Cuban sandwich shop with authentic food, drinks and snacks. The counter service was excellent. She made some recommendations and answered my questions. I learned that the midnight sandwich is served on media noche bread which is similar to the traditional Cuban bread, but slightly sweet - like a Hawaiian roll. She told me that this is the authentic bread served in Cuba and it's brought in from a Cuban bakery in south Florida. She told me that Cubans traditionally eat these types of sandwich late in the evening, hence the "midnight" name. So, with that background, of course I had to get that. The slightly sweet and perfectly pressed bread made for a terrific Cuban sandwich. Pickle had just the right amount of tanginess. The pork, ham, mustard and cheese melded together perfectly. There was a sweet Mayo-like condiment served with it that made for excellent dipping. I went for a root beer flavored Cuban soda and some plantain chips. This was a perfect lunch combo. I've heard a lot about this place, I've heard their sandwiches are amazing. That they have the best Cubans in town, so I came with a rather optimistic enthusiasm . Havana's is open twice a week till 7pm (Friday & Saturdays). I came at 6pm on a Friday, there was me and one other customer in the place, it appeared that the staff was preparing for closing. I ordered a regular Cuban sandwich and the service was nice enough, the sandwich looked quite nice, however. The pulled pork was completely bone dry. So much so that the sandwich was hard to swallow. I've heard from others that they did not have a "dry pork" Sandwich, so I do believe that the pork may have been left over from the lunch rush which is why it was so dry. I don't know if that is true, but regardless, the sandwich I had was nothing to write home about, so maybe don't come after 5pm. read more
