The inn has a great location and the building is a historic building. The rooms are clean and there's a beautiful but dated common area. The common area is meant to reflect a certain period, so it's not to be critiqued in my opinion. The issue is communication and overall responsiveness. The webiste did not reflect some of the glitches they had. For example, our room was listed as first floor. When we arrived, it was up a narrow spiral staircase, which is unacceptable. It also smelled musty and made me nervous to be up there in case of fire. I did not know how we would even get our luggage up there. No where in their website, email or anywhere was that mentioned. The inn runs on a remote basis. We called the desk and we were changed to a real first floor room, but the problem came the next day. We got up early and waited for breakfast. When we left the room to go down the hall to find breakfast, nothing was set up. My husband called the desk and the receptionist said, " Oh no breakfast because it's off season". It was April 25th- April 26th when we stayed. She said that they would serve breakfast starting in May. Again, the welcome email said that they were serving pastries from a nearby bakery called Bread and Roses. It said nothing about off-season rates means that there is no breakfast. Their website said nothing about it. The worst part is that after he called, our room code did not work. We were locked out. Now normally I take a phone and a pocketbook and luckily I took my phone. Imagine if I didn't? My husband still struggled with the door lock and the receptionist had to struggle with it. We decided to just leave rather than walk the beach, as our experience was ruined by being locked out. Lo and behold, as we were loading the car, it happened again. My husband left an item in the room. We could not get back in to get it. We just gave up and drove away. I woul have looked the other way, but we have written to the author and posted about this and no apologies were made, no compensation. It's a darn shame because compared to other places we have stayed, this was not a good experience, nor was it a good value. read more

I liked most things about the inn. Location is ideal, wake to a short walk to the beach for a sunrise. Very clean. Major problem, infant children screaming all pm really ruin a vacation. I won't stay here again. Up from 12:30 am thru 1 am and then was woken at dawn again. People come here to relax, not hear people's children!!!! Keep the old rules of no kids allowed and maybe I will come back. read more

My husband and I decided spur of the moment to take a two day trip to Wells and found Haven by the Sea online. We thought it looked interesting because it's an old Catholic Church that has been converted into a B and B- so we booked it even though we knew nothing about the area. So glad we took this chance. The building is beautiful and welcoming and the hosts, Nancy and Dan, could not have been more hospitable. Not only was the decor lovely- we loved our room (room 7)- but the common rooms had comfortable furniture, large screen TV's and puzzles, hundreds of books, and complimentary Port and Brandy to sip on. Breakfast was a granola, yogurt parfait with bananas and followed by eggs with sausage and English muffin. Delicious. Nancy made suggestions of where to go and where to park and was a joy to talk with. The beach is very close by (about 4 houses) and it's central to everything. I cannot say enough about how wonderful our experience was and how sad we were when our alarm went off early this morning to leave. We enjoyed all of their amenities and, of course, Stella. Thank you Dan and Nancy for a wonderful experience. read more

The worst customer service I have ever experienced. The owners are extremely arrogant patronizing and argumentative do not stay at this hotel. they do not have daily staff out front when you get to the hotel. the front doors will be locked and no one is there to greet you. you have to search and scrounge to find an employee. The accommodations are terrible. I highly recommend any of the other fabulous hotels in the area do not stay here!!!! read more

Two different stays. Two different experiences. - Not recommended for as a Wedding Venue. My husband and I first learned of HBTS from a friend in 2018. We first stayed November 2018. Fabulous. We decided to have our June 2019 Wedding. Working with Nancy for our wedding was great at first, then turned into a constant headache as she wanted more control in the planning that just being the Inn Keeper. I have to say she recommended the most fabulous vendors. She at first wouldn't allow us to directly reach out to our food vendor. Insisted on sending us the food options herself, and remove the prices. We later discovered she was trying to add in additional costs into the food bill to justify the items needed to host a wedding. Constant emails back and forth discussing the same topics. The space claimed to fit 50 people, we had 37 - very tight! We had 5 tables, 3 tables of 7, 2 tables of 8. We weren't allowed to see the room ahead of time. The tables were not in numerical order and our wedding party was stuck in the back of the room where there table number was '2', and our parents table, Table '1' was short an entire chair and place setting. Our seating arrangement was submitted 60 days in advance and asked if it would be okay - 'we were told its perfect'. Our wedding itself was amazing, but it was because of the other vendors who made the day why it was. Our guests checked into the Inn the day before as it was a 2 night minimum. As business owners Nancy and Danny should have asked the necessary info from each guest. Guest were allowed to be in the common areas past 1am the first night... and we were in complete lock down at 11pm the night of the wedding. A guest was even locked outside and it took 3 guests to hold doors open to allow her up to her room after needing something from her car. Their book keeping lacks and I have several instances where our Cocktail Hour was open bar, their pen and paper counts of drinks just became a dollar value rather than using a POS to keep track. Nancy asked me during Cocktail Hour "it's been 60 minutes, do you want to keep it open or close out?" I then asked what the total was, her quick response in front of 2 guests was "How much do you have?" I had to demand during the day of the wedding for the total to make my decision, I was just upset I decided to close it and move on with the rest of the reception. Per their website, check out is at 11am. Our guests were told coffee would be available from 8-10am and check out was at 10:30. A normal guest would be offered breakfast both mornings of a 2 night stay, which we were offered in November. However, our guests were served minted covered melon and a cheap blueberry bake first morning and nothing the next except a 30 minute earlier departure. Later to discover Nancy and Danny didn't properly check in one of the guests, as they had 2 children and didn't charge the additional occupancy fees. They claim to not have any way to get ahold of that guest; poor record keeping or lack of trying? So they were charging double the rate and taking it out of our security deposit. Without discussing that with us first, a friend of ours, a mutual acquaintance to Nancy told us that rooms' card declined and she was passing the fee on to us. As a business owner, you should never talk about business to a friend whom, especially attended the wedding. To sum up, our guests were uncomfortable staying in the Inn. We so glad that our wedding is over so we can finally cut ties. Wish them the best - but do not recommend Haven by the Sea. read more

I should have paid attention to the bad reviews about these people. I am guessing they have money issues but if you have a policy you have to honor it. We made reservations back in February for a one week stay starting July 2. They took a Deposit of half. Being experienced travelers we know to read the small print and mark our calendars to show when we need to cancel by. According to THEIR confirmation email you have to cancel within 21 days of arrival. We decided to go somewhere else and on June 10 I emailed telling them we were cancelling our reservation. Then I called and told the lady the same thing. Her initial reaction was you are going to lose your deposit. I said no I'm not, it's within 21 days and I gave the dates again. She said oh yes you're right. As of today, July 13, I have no return of my almost 1200 deposit. Today I called and explained I had not gotten my deposit back and she said Why? I was stunned. I said you have to tell me cause you're the one who didn't send it to me. Then she told me she was busy and had to call me back. That's when I lost it and told her I would be sure to let everyone I know what dirtbags ran this place. I wish I had paid more attention to the reviews about these people. Buyer Beware!! read more

This place was simply wonderful. The entire place was super clean and so well maintained. Beautifully furnished and the owners make you feel utterly welcome and appreciated. It was quiet and comfortable. Sheets so soft, pillows great. The history of the place is fantastic too. We got a grand tour when we checked in. We went there for our wedding night and because it was raining that day we asked if it was ok if our justice office the peace conducted our wedding in our beautiful room. They were super sweet to oblige. The owners even joined us in our cake cutting and offered us and our witnesses champagne to celebrate. So much more than we ever expected. We cannot wait to come stay here again. This will forever be our place. The view out on the beautiful marshes from the dining area is so relaxing and beautiful. We really wished we didn't have to go back to work the next day, but we will definitely be back again and again. Breakfast was good. Yogurt and granola parfait, then baked egg frittata, lightly dressed salad and toast. Very close to the beach too. Just a few min walk away. Can't wait to return. read more

Wedding Night Ruined We booked the Haven by the Sea for our wedding night. We were looking for a room with a spa tub, and the Haven by the Sea was the closest place we found offering a room with a spa tub. We booked a year in advance, and exchanged several e-mails with Nancy confirming our reservation, and arranging to arrive quite late (after 11PM). Our wedding day arrived and during our reception, Nancy called my cell phone around 8:30 PM and left a voicemail informing me that due to the fact that we had not arrived they were locking the door, and asking if we were still coming; apparently it had slipped her mind that it was our wedding night and we had pre-arranged a late arrival. I quickly called them to remind them of our late arrival, and they agreed to leave a key outside for us. We drove a hour and half to get to the Haven by the Sea (again, this was the CLOSEST spa tub we could find). We found the key outside with a note attached directing us to room 8. Upon entering the room, we discovered that it was NOT the room we had booked; room 8 is a standard room, no 4-poster bed, no spa bath. I reviewed my records, and according to all confirmation e-mails, we had booked room 5. I attempted I text Nancy, but she did not answer. Having no other choice, we went to sleep. All we wanted after the stress of wedding planning, and a long and exhausting wedding day was to sink into a spa tub, eat some wedding cake and process the day. Nancy and Danny took that from us. You only get one wedding night, and they ruined that for us. In the morning, I attempted to inquire as to why the room was changed. Danny became VERY aggressive and denied switching our room, despite my having the confirmation e-mails stating that we had booked room 5. When I asked for a refund of our deposit, he began yelling at me, calling me a b****, and demanding that we leave his hotel immediately. Frightened, I ran back upstairs, collected my husband and our belongings, and ran downstairs to leave. Danny came at us and threw a check in my face, and chased us down the hall berating us. Regrettably, in our haste, we left something in our room, and were obliged to return to the property an hour later to collect our thing. We called Nancy (who apparently was out of town) and she said that our property would still be in the room because housekeeping did not come until 11. My husband went back in looked for Danny to see about collecting our things, and Danny was nowhere to be found. My husband returned to the room, which was unlocked, and discovered that it had been thoroughly searched and our belongings were gone. Before leaving, he noticed a hidden door on the landing and opened it assuming it was a linen closet. It was another room with a dog and a soiled puppy pad, but my pillow was just inside. My husband grabbed our property and we promptly left. The next day, Nancy and Danny attempted to have us charged with breaking-and-entering (the door my husband entered was unlocked and unmarked) AND put a stop payment on the refund check in addition of continuing to call and berate is for the remainder of our honeymoon weekend. We were ultimately not charged with any wrongdoing and are STILL working with our credit company and the Maine Consumer Protection Office to secure the refund we were initially given. Read the other reviews of this property carefully, you will find that this sort of treatment is NOT unique. Nancy and Danny RECENTLY came to own this establishment and many of the POSITIVE reviews reflect interactions with the FORMER ownership. They have had OTHER interactions with the Wells Police over their abhorrent treatment of guests. Additionally, they keep interesting records on their former guests. I ended up subscribed to their newsletter, and when I tried to change my preferences, my guest status listed as "banned." They should be careful about making their opinions of guests known in this manner. read more

After visiting Bar Harbor, we stayed at Haven. It was absolutely fantastic. Booked the Loft Room warily as no photos. Best no look reservation ever. A sitting room, bedroom, and outdoor deck! My boyfriend and I stayed here for a few nights this past weekend on a quick beach vacation. It is a great little bed and breakfast in an otherwise hotel and motel-dominated area. The location is wonderful. The B & B (which is a converted church) is located in a residential area, only about a 2 minute walk to Wells Beach. It is quiet and relaxing. There is a nice front porch with rockers and a beautiful back porch with a small garden. The owners, Susan and John, are extremely friendly. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and help you make dinner reservations and other arrangements. Breakfast is good (though not the fanciest I've had at a B & B), and it is always served quickly. When it is nice weather, breakfast is out on the back porch, which is lovely. Overall, we were very happy with our stay at Haven by the Sea and look forward to returning sometime in the future. read more

My husband & I had been wanting check out this part of Maine for sometime now, to disconnect from the hustle & bustle of NY life and from some of the tragedy we've recently experienced (we lost a child). After much research, we decided for our anniversary, to stay in Wells at Haven by the Sea due to its proximity to the beach & other near by towns we planned to spend time in. First impression of the room was that it was spacious, clean & had a private entrance so we could come & go as we pleased. On our 2nd evening in the B&B, after returning to our room w tea from the common kitchen area, the owner, Nancy, came knocking at our suite door. I found it somewhat odd, since we had just been speaking to her in the kitchen & normally you don't have people knocking on your door (invading your privacy) during your stay. But none-the-less, I opened the door to see what she needed. She asked me if we were smoking pot in the room, which was surprising to me because we were not & were enjoying our evening watching tv with the tea she had just given us. I explained to her that we were not & invited her to come into the room if she liked. She declined and remarked that it must be someone else at the Inn. I thought that was the end of it & shut the door. 2 days later, on our 11th anniversary, hubby & I had just enjoyed a nice hot bath in the whirlpool when we decided to take an afternoon "nap" before our dinner plans that evening. We're lying in bed naked when "knock, knock, knock" at the door. My hub yelling "just a minute" threw his shorts on as I ran towards the bathroom to cover up with a robe. I'm thinking, who could be knocking on this door and interrupting this intimate moment? Did someone deliver a gift for us on our anniversary? No, instead it's Nancy and her husband, this time insisting that we are in fact smoking pot in the room (I assume at that moment?). I asked Nancy why she kept coming to our room despite us already telling her that we did not smoke pot (or even have any in our possession). She began raising her voice & told me I was hostile, that she has the right as the Inns owner to come and interrupt us and that if I'm lying to her, she will know because they even "clean the walls" when people check out. As if things weren't strange enough already, she then tells me how cute I look in the robe; like lady I'm wearing this robe because you interrupted our naked afternoon, and it doesn't feel too cute to me! She then begins insisting that we're the weed culprits and exclaiming that she can even "smell it right now!" Here we are trying to unwind & connect after a year of hell (and a hefty bill paid to the inn) & this lady is reading the riot act to me about pot we aren't even smoking. I once again invited her to come into the room & check for herself, she again declined, at which point I closed the door. At this point I'm sitting on the end of the bed trying to figure out what the heck just happened & felt so violated by the whole interaction. I've never been treated like this before as a paying guest & I began to think that maybe we were being profiled. My husband is a musician with many tattoos, and we are often mistaken for a couple at least 10 years our junior (we'll take the compliment!); we MUST be the pot smoking couple of Nancy's nightmares. It was so unfair & really ruined the whole vibe of our day/anniversary & the end of our trip. I decided to get dressed & go out to the front desk area to again try to understand what the disconnect was. As I was approaching the desk, I could hear her talking smack about us. A truly rude & tasteless thing to do as the owner of the establishment. If this is how she treats young/tattooed people, can't imagine how she would treat minorities or others that don't fit her perfect guest profile. As nice as the room was, do yourself a favor & stay at another establishment where the owner isn't as ostentatious or willing to infringe upon their guests experience. read more

I stayed here for two nights for my friends' wedding in June. We arrived somewhat later at night but not too late and Nancy was pleasant enough when we checked in, but hovered over the guests a bit much. Our first night was fine, but two of my friends who were bringing their two kids along were given a hard time when they arrived to check in as the owner tried to say they didn't book a room for 4, but my friend was told to book that specific room and the owner failed to deal with any extra charges that were necessary for extra people at that time (which is when it should've been handled), but instead tried to say they didn't have information for my friend to contact her after the weekend and instead charged the wedding couple. This is very unprofessional as you clearly need to have the information of the person who booked the room in order for her to reserve it and any issues could have been handled at the time of check in or even check out. We were allowed to sit in the common areas Friday night playing cards until 1:30am with no issue from the owners. Friday night was enjoyable as we were allowed to congregate with friends and enjoy each other's company as late as we wanted. So when the wedding came Saturday it was very perplexing that the wedding had to be shut down by 10pm for "quiet hours" and by 11pm the owner began locking all the doors (inside as well so the door that allowed you to travel from the main hallway of the inn into the dining room, which had the only staircase to one upstairs room that my friends were staying in with the two kids). After the wedding we had quietly gone up to their room, which had a balcony to sit on, while the wedding was broken down. Then we figured we could go down to the common area again to play cards like the night before, but got reprimanded and told the common areas were off limits and it was "quiet time". This made no sense when we had no issue the previous night and literally everyone staying at the inn was part of the wedding...so I honestly have no idea who we needed to be quiet for? I would understand if there were other outside guests staying there but that was not the case. I felt terrible for my two friends that got married that they were not able to keep the celebration going! Another strange thing was that I would expect when staying at a Bed & Breakfast that we would be provided breakfast both days. However the first morning there was just a small simple breakfast and then just coffee on the morning of checkout. For the cocktail hour for the wedding there was a signature drink available and beer and wine that the wedding couple were paying for. The signature drink was warm so not very pleasant and if you tried to order wine or beer they seemed to always get the order wrong (my friend order two IPAs and they gave him two light beers, another friend ordered a Pinot Grigio and got served red wine, and another ordered a vodka soda and essentially got served a martini). It was anything but smooth. Overall I'd say the first night was fine and the owners seemed nice enough, but by the second night it was not a great experience and we all felt like we were school children being scolded and given a curfew. Then it definitely felt like we were all being rushed out the door Sunday like they couldn't get rid of us soon enough. I would not recommend Haven by the Sea as a wedding venue or if you're trying to enjoy some quality time with a lot of people. read more

A little slice of heaven! My first B&B experience, and Nancy and Danny knocked it out of the park! Highly recommended!

A true Haven By The Sea! As a child, my parents co-owned The Haven and since that time, I longed to return for a visit. I brought my husband and well behaved eight year old daughter with me. Upon arrival, Nancy and Danny made us feel right at home. They were gracious hosts, always accessible and ready for great conversation. The inn is absolutely beautiful; Nancy has done an amazing job decorating every nook and cranny with exceptional taste. Coincidentally, our suite was located in the area I used to live in, so it really brought back a lot of memories. The suite was a lovely mix of coastal charm and artistic elegance with great attention to detail. We were able to open the balcony door and drink in the ocean air. The bed was incredibly comfortable with the softest sheets! We spoke with Nancy at length about how the inn had been transformed over the years and how the original wooden floors were kept in tact. Part of the charm is the old familiar creaking of the floors, an original pew from the church, and the bar they have put in where the confessional used to be! I wouldn't recommend bringing children to a bed and breakfast due to the sophisticated guests who are there to relax and the fancy art and antiques, but Nancy was so kind to give my daughter special attention throughout our stay. I truly appreciated the little touches and gestures like offering her a juice box while we had a glass of wine, sharing her collection of Fancy Nancy books as well as many other books throughout the inn, and sitting to work on a puzzle with her that was left out for guests. The next morning, we enjoyed a walk on the beach before breakfast and you simply can't beat the fact that you're a stone's throw away. The breakfast, prepared and served by Nancy and Danny, is absolutely delicious and you can eat inside or out on the patio overlooking the marsh. We stayed there a few weeks ago and did not have as wonderful a time as people did when Susan and John were owners years ago. No AC in the bedrooms, nights were hot. They did have central AC in the main lobby but not helpful when trying to sleep. We arrived home after dinner at 8:30 pm our first night to all the lights out (main door and halls). There were 4 of us, so we found a few lights and headed to the back deck. We were unpleasantly greeted by owner Nasty Nancy in her bathrobe who was furious and screaming that we were getting ice and escorted us back to our rooms. Floors were so squeaky, you didn't dare get up during the night. The next night we stayed out til 10 knowing what we were coming back to. Again all lights out and dark. Walking down the halls holding arms out to find the walls, we sadly saw each light on in the rooms by a small light coming from under the door. If you like dead silence, this is the place for you. Unfriendly and unwilling to accommodate circumstances that can't be helped. BEWARE This company is NOT willing to give a refund under any circumstance. My husband and I booked this b&b through Expedia for Oct 5-6. They immediately deducted 130 from my American Express. After we got word that my mother had suffered a massive stroke on Sept 27 we immediately called and relayed to Expedia to cancel and get a refund. Nancy told Expedia on sept 27 they had a no cancellation policy. Every single resort, b&b, excursion companies, car rental, and Delta were forgiving and refunded our deposits and full amounts. This b&b refused and not only that.. claimed that we never touched base and let them know. Expedia called on Sept 27 and we called on Oct 1 just to follow up. Last night a man called around 8pm on my cell and asked if we were checking in. Are you kidding????? Of course not- we are in Georgia dealing with my mom's stroke!! Please don't use this b&b. They are NOT nice people. I am a teacher and was thrilled to be visiting Maine. Circumstances changed our plans and this b&b just made $260 when we gave plenty of notice. read more

We absolutely loved our stay at Haven By the Sea! From the moment my fiance and I walked in the door, the Innkeepers, John and Susan, made us feel so welcomed and relaxed. The Inn is charming and beautifully decorated. Our room was wonderful and the location of the Inn is great. It's so close to the beach and to local shops. Cocktail hour on the back deck overlooking the marsh was great and the Martini's were even better! Breakfast the next morning was delicious! We loved our visit so much that we already made our reservations and will be returning to Haven by the Sea next summer! My husband and I stayed at Haven By The Sea this past summer. It was a great long weekend. John and Susan were so wonderful, they made us feel comfortable and relaxed from the moment we walked through the door! We stayed in the suite, which has a fireplace and a big jacuzzi tub. The room was so beautiful and romantic, especially for us newlyweds! We enjoyed happy hour each night on the back deck overlooking the marsh and had the best martinis and margaritas! They also have a wonderful selection of wine to choose from as well. John and Susan joined us for happy hour, which was so much fun. We really got to know them and want to visit again this summer. Every morning we enjoyed drinking our coffee while we sat outside on the back deck soaking up the sun. John and Susan served us a wonderful breakfast every morning too. They are located right by the beach and some great little shops. We loved taking walks to the shops and on the beach. We definitely enjoyed our stay at Haven by the Sea and we cannot wait to stay there again this summer! read more
