Brian told us he currently did not have the money, would be traveling in Europe for several weeks, but would "guarantee to pay at latest by June 5th." We will update this review accordingly. ORIGINAL REVIEW (April 2026): Using Brian's Painting was a very disappointing and costly experience that left us with an unfinished home and significant financial loss. We hired Brian for a $10,000 exterior painting project. After collecting $6,000, he completed only about 10% of the work, then abandoned the project and stopped communicating. Brian requested a 40% deposit ($4,000) and later an additional 20% ($2,000) after a short prep stage that took about eight hours. After receiving the $6,000, he returned only twice for brief visits over several weeks, then dropped the job, leaving the house unfinished. (See attached photos.) We attempted to resolve the matter in good faith. We agreed he could keep the $2,000 even though several licensed painters we consulted estimated that only about 10% ($1,000) of the work had been completed by Brian. He eventually agreed to refund the $4,000 deposit, but after multiple deadline extensions has only returned $1,300 and has now stopped communicating altogether. We are now pursuing recovery through court and filing a complaint with the Regulated Industries Complaints Office (RICO), which takes enforcement action against unlicensed contractors operating illegally in Hawaii. We also had prior issues with a smaller job he completed in 2023, including use of lower-grade paint than what we paid for and paint splatter left on appliances. Despite this, we gave him another opportunity when he repeatedly requested the exterior project. We greatly regret that decision now. Bottom line: We strongly recommend homeowners to look elsewhere.

There were a few hurdles, but he worked out all of the kinks & came up with a time that was agreeable for all. Lupe did all of the actual repair & he did a wonderful job. Our problem stemmed from a toilet flooding in the apartment above our unit. Fortunately we were home at the time of the accident so we were able to use buckets to catch all of the water that dripped through the ceiling, medicine cabinet & exhaust fan. Due to insurance delays resulting from the owner of the apartment causing the damage, it literally took two months to finally get approval for testing, mitigation & repair work. Luckily we didn't encounter any mold issues but the ceiling above the shower stall had been so badly damaged that we had to have that replaced. The company that provided the mitigation services completed that aspect of the cleanup & was to also perform the repair but abandoned us after they had removed part of the ceiling, leaving a gaping hole. They ghosted us after I questioned why we paid for work that was never performed during the mitigation. After several attempts at contacting this company, we decided to find another company to complete the ceiling repair. A friend suggested we call Oahu Ace Handyman Services since they had used the outfit & was happy about the results. Their advertising indicated drywall work so we decided to give them a call. From the moment we contacted Jon, he was very responsive & professional. Since his company has started to build an excellent reputation locally, they've gotten very busy, so it took a few days to have Lupe come in, assess the situation & provide an estimate. We felt that their estimate was competitive and in our case, even better than the estimate provided by the mitigation company. Once we committed, it was really impressive how updates and information were routinely provided by either text or email. We've worked with other local companies that would schedule work with us but never hear from them until we initiated a followup call or email to confirm the appointment. On the days of the scheduled appointments, we would even receive texts informing us that Lupe was en route and the possible time of arrival. He was always punctual. Lupe's drywall work was superb! We couldn't even tell the transition. Both the texture and paint matched perfectly. He was so pleasant to work with as he has a bubbly personality. He was informative, friendly, accommodating & had a good sense of humor. He worked fast, efficiently and cleaned up after himself each day. He setup barriers to minimize the dust generated from settling onto our furniture and laid down thick brown paper along the path he walked to protect our new LVF. After the work was completed he vacuumed all the floors affected and thoroughly inspected the area to ensure that there was no paint splatter or inadvertent residual "mud". The actual work was completed in less than the time of the initial quote, so the labor portion of the bill was adjusted and reduced as such. How's that for honesty? Nice folks, but not exactly a user friendly fix-it model. I called for an estimate, was told to…read moresend pics, which I did. was given an estimate that sounded high. Was then told I could get one of their crew out to take a look, but it would cost $99 plus tax. which would be applied to the final bill if I got the work done. I thought it might be a good idea, but then they came back with the exact same, very high, estimate. I had some of the same work done a while back and the handy man did each segment in about 20 minutes; but Ace was saying it would take an hour for the same thing (each segment). I'm not sure the estimator was really confident in the time it would take him. Nice fellow though. And, I'm not sure that they are allowed to 'think outside the box' when presented with something unusual. In this case it was sealing some open areas around the trim on the house. It needs a little filler, like a wood slat and some sika (or other outdoor caulk) and, as I said, that same work was done on other trim areas in about 10 to 15 min each piece of trim area. So I did not hire Ace, and I had to eat the estimate charge. I'd say, they likely can do a standard kind of job with square footage or straightforward and 'by the book' kinds of installs/fixes, but I'd not call them back for anything that isn't standard. I'm not calling them back for anything at this point. There was another element to the estimate that I got fixed by another handyman today, that took approx. 20 min and I did not need new parts for. So -- though some folks seem to like Ace, I'd not recommend them for anything that requires adaptability or creative thinking. They may be limited by their partner (Ace Hardware), since it's a franchise, but I could not see paying their price of $150/hour (plus tax and materials) for 7 or 8 hours for a job that would take about 2 or 3 hours tops (if that).
