This location is super conveniently located and the facilities were always clean and well-kept. I really liked the 24 hr access so I could pick things up/ drop things off after hours and not deal with traffic. Parking is tight, but as long as you avoid the weekday mornings, it's no problem finding a spot. Highly recommend this location and Hawaii Self Storage as a whole! read more

From the start we had the best experience, our daughter attends UHM and we live in Colorado. Elizabeth provided us with excellent service helping us secure a storage unit at the Kaimuki location, she was exceptional at corresponding via email answering my questions. Move in day was just as we expected the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful with all my questions. On move in day the location had several staff at the counter, carts, a person directing cars and helping with the elevator. I am not usually one to leave reviews, but my recent experience at Hawai'i Self Storage - Kaimuki was beyond exceptional . I helped a friend move some belongings into his unit recently, and the staff made the process incredibly smooth. Bj greeted us with a warm aloha welcome, checked in to ensure everything was going well, and directed us to the appropriate parking spot. Liana was equally helpful, showing us where to find the carts and guiding us to the unit, which made everything more efficient. I also noticed another female employee (didn't wanna ask her name that would have been awkward) cleaning the parking area, which speaks volumes about the facility's commitment to cleanliness and maintenance. A big mahalo to the staff for making what could have been a stressful moving day much more manageable! Compared to my personal previous experience at Public Storage, this place truly embodies the 'Ohana spirit, offering a welcoming and supportive environment. read more

I knew I needed a storage unit when I decided to rent my apartment put, plus my boyfriend does not like clutter, so all the items I wanted to keep that was in my old apartment needed a new home. Of course, I turned to Yelp to find the best storage unit available...and Hawaii Self Storage was the winner for the following reasons: 1. Their facility looked safe and secure - the gates to the parking lot are locked after hours. You have to enter a pin number to get to the floor with your storage unit and if you didn't enter the pin, an alarm will sound when your unit is opened. 2. The facilities are clean 3. The facilities are air conditioned, so you know that the environment (like humidity) shouldn't have as big of an impact of your items I liked that all the information, even units available and pricing, was available online. However, I still wanted to check the place out in person and see how big of a unit I needed. The personnel were super friendly and helpful as I asked all my questions and setting up my account. While I think the price of the unit is a bit more than others, I find that the price is worth it for the safety and cleanliness of the unit. read more

COLLEGE Families. Please beware of this facilities bate and switch actions. I reserved a unit for $121. When I called to ask questions they stated the price would be $141. When my daughter went down to finalize the paperwork, she was told that they didn't have her unit that was reserved but that they had a bigger size that was only $20 more. I was so mad I told her to leave. How dare this company that advertises to our college students, do this. When you advertise a price, that is what the price should be. The front staff were very helpful and efficient. The price was reasonable given the space I needed (I got a 10 by 4" locker that could fit my 9" surfboard plus a few crates and small items). My belongings were in great condition throughout the storage period. I liked that we had 24/7 access to the storage units. The location is also central, close to campus and Kaimuki. After much research and panicking to find a place to store my car, I would have to say Hawai'i Self Storage came through. I made a reservation and they held it for me until I was ready. They made accommodations to fit my needs and showed that they truly cared about their costumers as well as the services they provided. I've been to a lot of storage units because I've worked for businesses who have so many things they need an extra space to hold their stuff. Oddly enough, both of them left the same storage unit to go to another - now that's saying something. Let me start by saying that the staff is incredibly nice. They remember your name and I love that! The access to the storage units are extremely easy, all you need is a code and it will let you up. They're also safe! Cameras are everywhere and if you don't put in your code before entering your unit an alarm will go off. To help with loading and unloading there are carts you can use if you trade the staff your ID. There's a bathroom. Ample Parking and boxes/packaging supplies for purchase. Entering the lot is pretty tricky but I love this storage spot. Especially for all the events we through in town. read more

I switched to Hawaii Self Storage in Kaimuki from Public Storage on Kapiolani a few months ago and so far, I'm totally a fan! Awesome location, 24-hour access, air conditioning, ample parking and cameras around every corner make the experience overall very pleasant. There's even an option to access electricity and cable in my unit, since so many folks run their businesses out of their units here. Sounds odd, but when you think of the astronomical cost of commercial space nowadays, it actually makes perfect financial sense when you think about it. At my old unit, I was often paranoid about the unfortunate homeless folks who would sometimes live in their units and also about the personal safety of myself and my staff who access our storage. But at Hawaii Self Storage there are cameras everywhere and an alarm that will go off if you haven't activated your unit with a key code in the elevator, so I don't worry at all. I feel like big brother is always watching and that's a good thing. My favorite part of Hawaii Self Storage is their staff who are always so friendly and helpful anytime I stop in to ask a question or pick-up a package. read more

Last place in the world I would recommend. I went in to get a quote. I was assisted by Joe Seifried and explained I wanted a quote for a 4x4 and a 5x5; he gave me the quotes. When I asked how much the next size was - he blurted out 'we could be here all day doing this - what do you want'. People that dont like people should not be in customer service - he is either going to be doing this job for the rest of his life, or for a very, very, very short period of time. read more

They were impressive, at first, but have slipped dramatically in the last few years. No staying power as far as quality is concerned. For some reason, they screwed up my auto payment, which has been in effect since 2007, and now I have to go out of my way to fix it for them! I recall they made photocopies of my credit card and everything and now they can't find it! They send out e-mail notifications but can't even cross-reference e-mail addresses with accounts. A storage facility that can't keep accurate records? The service at Kaimuki has been in decline over the last few years. People behind the counter are less and less helpful. They're all smiles when you're signing up for a new account, but all stink eye when you need something later. They're pushing programs to expand their customer base which reeks of desperation. Services in the "business center" have deteriorated. No more printers. The computers are cruddy. On the weekends, strange people hang out there fooling with their crotch rockets, and after hours security does nothing about it. One guy pulled onto the sidewalk feigning trouble with his cycle and when I keyed in the code to enter the facility, he slipped in behind me to join the other guys driving their motorcycles back and forth. I told security and he did nothing about it. Passed by there one night and there were two police cars pulled inside the gates. Now what? Just acquired a 3BR condo. If they don't fix their accounting problems without further inconvenience, guess I'll turn one of the bedrooms into storage unit and clear out of Hawai'i Self-Storage. Might be time to bolt before they tank anyway. An extra $300/month in my pocket. read more

I'm not too sure if I would come back if I needed a storage unit to rent. When we first moved in, the employees were helpful with getting us our unit. However, after I gave my one month notice, I received mail telling me that I missed my payment so they added a late fee of $15 to the bill. I called to tell them that the rate should be prorated. The person on the phone told me to just pay the bill on our move out day and the late fee will be taken out. The day of our move out came and so we went to the office to check out. They told me the total (I wasn't sure how much the prorate cost would be) so it sounded okay so I handed them my credit card. Sure enough, after I paid, they gave me a receipt, breaking down all the costs. The late fee was still included. The guy told me that I would get a call back from him or the accounting person later that day or the next day... I didn't get a phone call. I had to go out of my way and call them on two different days to get them to credit me back my late fee. I finally got in touch with the person today. Overall, they made the process longer than it should be and I had to get out of my way to contact them, when they should be taking initiative and contacting me. Thank God I didn't sign up for auto payment!! I'm just glad I'm out of there and don't have to deal with them anymore. One good thing about this place is the 24 hour access but there are some weirdos that hang out in the parking lot. I wouldn't feel comfortable coming here alone. Also, the overnight security people should be a little more courteous when talking to customers. read more

Compared to public storage across the street, HSS employees followed up via phone. Naoi was helpful, friendly, didn't try to sell me more than I needed and followed up. When I got there today, they were courteous, professional and efficient. Bank of Hawaii customers have a coupon for 30 or 40% off for the first 6 months. All in all, a good experience. read more

The facility has a great layout considering the location constraints. One can enter through the Kapiolani entrance and Waialae entrance. There is limited parking and gets worse when a moped takes up a whole parking space. The staff is awesome and very helpful. The building is air conditioned. The storage areas are very clean. There are cameras everywhere and a code is required to access the floor that your unit is on. Very impressive system. I rented a unit for 2months. read more

*PLEASE READ BEFORE CONSIDERING THIS STORAGE FACILITY* This is a very long read, but worth it if you want to save yourself time and grief when dealing with a business like Hawaii Self Storage. I really hate to say this because I don't like to bad mouth businesses, but I have to say that they have totally lost my trust. I along with many others, have recently learned that we have been charged for insurance premiums that we did not authorize. Let me explain... They sent a letter out in May 2012 stating to all their customers that Hawaii Self Storage had joined with a tenant insurance program and will offer insurance policies effective June 1, 2012. Now this is well and fine in the first two paragraphs. I read the first two paragraphs and thought ok they're offering insurance. Nothing new really and something I wasn't interested in since they asked me this when I first signed my contract. I believe their contract had a provision of waiving any liability for my stored items. So I tossed it not reading any further... BIG MISTAKE!!!! It was not until I talked to a friend and fellow Hawaii Self Storage customer that I realized what had happened. By not responding I authorized this company to charge me for something I didn't think I needed to buy. I was shown the letter again and read further. The third paragraph states to return the attached addendum at your earliest convenience. Then in the next sentence in bold it says: "All addendums, regardless of selected option, must be signed and returned by 7/1/2012. Otherwise, the tenant agrees to enroll with the lowest limit of $2,000 at a monthly fee of $9.00" Now let's go to the 5th paragraph which states: "If you voluntarily exclude yourself from the Tenant Insurance program, you must complete the attached addendum and provide evidence of insurance and agree to keep coverage in force during the term of your lease" After reading these terms I initially thought that this must be a new policy I may have missed. It wasn't really something I wanted or needed since most of my stored items are not particularly valuable, but it's nice not having them filling up my house or garage. I then ask myself if I need to insure things that wouldn't kill me if I lost due to something out of the ordinary happening? The answer is no. I also thought that how could this business rent out the units easily if they required insurance? It's like going to Best Buy and they force you buy a warranty on a DVD player. I then read some interesting and conflicting information at the bottom of the letter: "Failure to carry the required insurance is a breach of this agreement and Occupant assumes all risk of loss to stored property that would be covered by such insurance. Occupants expressly agrees that the insurance company providing such insurance shall not be subrogated to any claim of occupant against Owner, Owner's agents or employees for loss of or damage to property." What this is telling me is that insurance is OPTIONAL. If you choose not to get insurance then you can't make a claim or hold them liable in any way. This is clearly pointed out to you when signing up. So why then would they automatically place an insurance policy on my unit if I already understand my risks? Well I get my answer when I read the very bottom of the letter which states: "A portion of the cost paid will be used to pay the storage company's and/or management company's cost for collecting, accounting for and remitting the (insurance company name omitted) premium to the insurer(s) licensed to underwrite the insurance provided pursuant to (insurance company name omitted). Also, a portion of the cost paid may be retained by the storage company and/or management company as profit." If you read the whole letter carefully and understand that insurance is OPTIONAL you call and ask them what to do. The person answering the phone will tell you to send the addendum in and choosing the "no insurance option" or if you no longer have the addendum then you have to go in and fill one out and/or talk to the manager. Basically telling you to use/waste your valuable time because they came up with this scheme to rip people off. They probably figured that most people would not have taken action on the letter and just let it go. All the while collecting extra money from you without you realizing it until it's too late or in some cases because you think it's required. I believe this business practice to be deceitful and untrustworthy. I now know that my trust was misplaced and that any business I am a customer of will do anything to get more money out of me if the opportunity presents itself. In closing, my friends and myself will be removing our items from their facilities shortly and cancelling our contracts. I hope that this company realizes that a customer's trust is very powerful and also very delicate. Once broken, it may never be repaired or given again. read more
