I arrived, filled some forms, and was called back soon after for X-rays, etc. After explaining what was going on and explaining the procedure, we agreed to move forward. He did a great job fixing my tooth! He and his assistant Emily moved together smoothly and finished in less than an hour. No pain during the procedure with some expected soreness later in the day. Now I can go back to vacation!! ------------ Two notes: 1) Parking garage was very full - I had to park on the top floor. 2) There were two things they recommended for my case that were not covered by insurance. After seeing my dentist to assess my teeth after that traumatic fall in Japan, I was advised to have my teeth further evaluated by an endodontist. Grateful my dentist was able to have my teeth aligned again after a tooth shifted from the fall, but knew I had to be checked on the teeth's nerves and roots. My dentist referred me out to Hawaii Endodontics (HE). HE was founded in 2009 and has now expanded to 3 locations (Honolulu, Aiea and Kailua) on Oahu offering root canals utilizing modern technology. I decided to go to their Honolulu clinic on the 5th floor of Hale Pawaa as I'm familiar with this building and it's near my home. I already had an appointment at Hale Pawaa to see my PCP so I made my way to the 5F to speed up the appointment process. I wanted to avoid leaving a message and wait for the call back. It was easy scheduling the appointment and I asked to be paired with one of the four professionals recommended by my dentist. Was advised I could be seen on Monday morning but had to wait until they confirmed with my insurance on the coverage. Dr. Howard Kang was assigned to me and I also had to complete a questionnaire prior to be seen. It was basically personal information and general health questions. I'll be frank where I was nervous to see Dr. Kang as my front teeth and mouth were stiltvery sensitive and this has been keeping me from getting deep sleep at night. The tenderness, discomfort and anxiety have been on my mind but glad I was seeking the medical attention I really needed. The dental assistant was very friendly and encouraged me to relax - - I guess it was obvious by my actions and facial expressions. Soon after Dr. Kang entered and asked several questions prior to having x-rays performed and tests done. The results determined the root canal for tooth #8 as it didn't respond to the sensitivity test and confirmed by the x-ray results. Anesthesia was performed and Dr. Kang conducted the procedure. It was painless and he kept me posted with the steps involved. Prior to departure, I was provided with a prescription for a stronger dose of Ibuprofen to be taken after the anesthesia fades away. This experience wasn't what I had hoped for but that's life. I was informed of my copay portion prior to the appointment and paid my share prior to leaving the office. In closing, I'm pleased with this experience and glad my dentist referred me to HE. I visited Hawaii Endodontics LLC on 11/24/25 at 10 AM for a consultation with Dr. Howard Kang regarding issues with tooth #9, and unfortunately had one of the worst front-desk experiences I've ever had at a medical office. From the moment I walked in, the receptionist's attitude was immediately off-putting. When her coworker told her to assist me, she turned around looking startled, almost "scared," as if my presence was somehow an inconvenience. While I was filling out paperwork, I overheard her say that my facial expression looked "like someone who saw a person die." I never expected blatant, unprovoked insults from a receptionist toward a paying patient. If this is how their admin staff treats people, it raises concerns about the professionalism of the entire practice. I paid $200 for a CBCT scan. After a long wait, I was taken for x-rays by an assistant and then waited again before meeting Dr. Kang. To his credit, he was friendly, knowledgeable, and did take the time to send a report to my general dentist, and even provided a disc with the imaging for me to keep. He clearly explained my two treatment options: an apicoectomy or extraction with an implant. Still, the appointment overall felt rushed and very transactional. At the end, Dr. Kang instructed the front desk to provide me with an estimate for the apicoectomy, but as of now, I'm still waiting. Meanwhile, another endodontics clinic I contacted afterward sent me an estimate within an hour, highlighting just how unprofessional and unresponsive this office's admin team is by comparison. Overall, the extremely poor treatment from the front desk overshadowed everything else. Despite Dr. Kang's professionalism, I cannot recommend this clinic based on my experience. read more

Dr. Farid Shaikh is a professional and considerate doctor who always keeps his promises. I had him see me twice in an emergency, and as a result, I was able to receive more treatment than I expected. This time my case was very urgent just before the holiday season. The doctor made time to treat me thoroughly, so that inflammation and infection would not occur again. On top of that, the doctor called my husband Jeff, who usually accompanies me, on the phone to explain my condition, saying that Jeff must be worried. I was very impressed by his depth of compassion. It's a dental treatment that everyone is not good at, but I'm always relaxed when I'm treated by Dr. Shaikh. This feeling comes from the feeling of trust in him. And Dr. Shaikh makes me laugh with jokes even when I visit in an emergency. Dr. Shaikh himself probably doesn't realize how much it relieves my tension. In other words, I feel that the best professional doctors like Dr. Shaikh are naturally equipped with the skills to not cause anxiety or discomfort to patients. Also, the doctor and I chat casually. I came in for a same-day referral for a root canal that needed to be done immediately. I have not had one in probably 20+ years, because I am very hesitant, as I had one get infected. In consultation with Dr. Shaik, who sincerely listened to my concerns, we decided this was the very best option. I was shocked that he did it quite quickly, with very little pain (just the numbing shots). Dr. Shaik and Aunty Lei made the whole experience pleasant, if I can say? I don't usually expect that to be said of any dental visit, much less a root canal! Aunty Lei even wrapped me nicely in a blanket because I got cold. And now one day later, I have not experienced any post pain or swelling. 5 stars -- Root canal redemption! I never thought I'd be writing a positive review about needing a root canal, but here we are -- all thanks to Dr. Shaikh and the amazing team at Hawaii Endodontics. I'd never had a cavity before, so when my general dentist told me I had a big one that likely needed a root canal, I was honestly in disbelief -- and pretty anxious. The words "root canal" alone had me imagining the worst. Thankfully, a trusted friend referred me to Dr. Shaikh for a second opinion, and I'm so grateful they did. From the moment I walked into the clinic, I felt cared for. The front desk staff greeted me warmly, and Lynn, the nurse, was an absolute angel. She noticed I was nervous (even though I tried to play it cool!) and immediately made me feel comfortable -- offering me water and making sure I had everything I needed. Dr. Shaikh was kind, calming, and incredibly clear in explaining what was going on with my poor tooth (spoiler: it was super infected) and what my options were. He made the whole thing make sense without overwhelming me. When we decided to go ahead with the root canal, my anxiety started creeping back in -- but it was short-lived. Honestly? It wasn't scary at all. Dr. Shaikh made sure I was fully numb, checked in with me frequently during the procedure, and adjusted things if I felt even a hint of discomfort. And best of all -- it didn't hurt. At all. After the procedure, he walked me through everything he found (infection: gnarly, but conquered!) and explained my aftercare clearly. Getting to the "Root" of your problems doesn't have to be a pain!! Emergencies are never scheduled and my sudden fraction of my tooth being chipped off due to a aging filling luckily happened during the week and I was referred to Hawaii Endodontics. Never EVER having the need for a root canal has certainly got me stressed out hearing so many stories of pain and discomfort of course I'm not looking forward to it but called them immediately to schedule an appointment. They have three locations (Honolulu, Aiea and Kailua) with the sense of urgency location certainly isn't an issue for me in fact they did have a same day 11 am available at the Kailua location though since my tooth wasn't severely affected pain wise waiting a couple days is an option I was willing to make since I needed to obviously pay out of pocket and to my luck they had a cancellation on my day off and took it immediately and it was in the Honolulu location woohoo!!!! I'm so lucky to have this process take care of basically immediately I was thrilled to have it settled. Dr. Aimee Kim...a thousand stars to this gem as she was simply phenomenal! I apologize as I can't remember her assistant name but she was just a delight explained everything to me and just knew exactly what was needed to be done. With literally zero pain from the numbing to the whole procedure it was incredible that I had more pain having my filling done in comparison in the expert care of Dr. Kim I was just so relieved. They will take emergency situation if you do have one so please don't hesitate to give them a call as they have many options for you and will give it to you straight of what's the best treatment long term. I have been going to Hawaii Endodontics and Dr. Shaikh for years and always have a great experience, even if it is getting a root canal. Over the weekend my tooth started to throb and thinking I needed a referral from my normal dentist, I reached out to them but they were closed. I'm so grateful that Hawaii Endodontics was open and able to see me the next day! I scheduled for later in the day to accommodate my work schedule, but when the pain got worse overnight I decided to show up at the office first thing in the morning in hopes I could get seen early. Dr. shaikh got me taken care of first thing in the morning. The staff is always very friendly and informative. After leaving Hawaii Endodontics and seeing Dr. Farid Shaikh I was freely able to start cussing at bad drivers in the Hale Pavaa parking structure. I was also able to sing, which I haven't done since I got my previous root canal over a week ago (with a different endodontist), and even speak normally. I was scared to speak normally because the vibration of my own voice would hit the operated tooth and I would get electrical jolts of pain like I bit down on a naked exposed wire. I couldn't yawn normally because closing the mouth would make the teeth touch each other and it would make me wish I could cuss. Prior to not being able to cuss, sing, or talk normally I couldn't sleep or eat normally either. I'd continue to wake up in the unholy hours of 130 AM, stay up until 330 AM and have to get up at 430 AM, and that's after going to bed at 1200 AM and then having to go to work with hardly any sleep. Let's not forget the eating part. I couldn't eat anything but soup and bread on some days. The only times I could even chew on the unaffected side was after Motrin. I sucked down so many Motrin day and night I was worried about my inner organs. If you're probably wondering what was wrong with my other endodontist, it was nothing. He apparently did a good job but the explanation part was sorely lacking (sorely- get it?). I did get a sheet of paper with information on it but that was about it. I called their office after two days of continued severe pain but they didn't have an opening until 2 weeks later. My wonderful dentist pulled some strings and tried to get me in the next day but they called back and said to take antibiotics; I didn't need to necessarily come in but to call them back in 2 weeks. None of that was reassuring - how was antibiotics supposed to help with pain? And more importantly, why was I still having these horrible pains I went to fix in the first place? A part of me felt like a one-night endo-stand. Dr. Shaikh to the rescue! He explains everything, in plain simple English, in detail. The light bulb started coming on in my head. Now I understood things. He showed me the xrays he took, he even did some amazing detective work and pointed out my biting habits, like a forensic dentist. I couldn't believe he pointed out the other side of my mouth where I had cracks in the porcelain enamel, where I didn't have pain but was biting down on almonds before all of this (thanks, Keto diet). He smoothed down the operated tooth so it wouldn't touch the other tooth below so I wouldn't make my post-op inflammation flare-up continuously and prolonging this agony - but how did I know this? Only because Dr. Shaikh explained it! Another thing I loved immediately about Dr. Shaikh is his kindness and caring. He's not eyeing you like a one-night root canal stand; you're a person, and more importantly, a person in pain! He told me I wasn't crazy (I really, really needed to hear this) and that he was going to stick with me and that we were going to figure this out together. I almost cried hearing that. He chose the perfect profession because root canals can be a scary concept but nowadays is no longer scary at all- you just need the right person to help you along. Dr Shaikh also follows up with an email/call, which I appreciated. His staff is super nice and pleasant. The lady at the front desk is perky and friendly. I have a bunch of jacked-up teeth from bad decisions (multiple crowns I was told I needed which were not true at the time) and just getting older in general. I wish I would have found Dr. Shaikh a long time ago, but it's better late than never. I'm recommending Dr. Shaikh to everyone, including my family, friends, patients and co-workers. HUGE TIP: Arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment as the parking at Hale Pavaa can be hugely irritating. I went and there were no parking spaces. I had to wait for someone to leave. RETURN FACTOR: I don't want another root canal or re-treatment but I will definitely know where to come if I do! read more

I went to Dr. Shaikh after having issues with a temporary crown (my filling broke and after the temporary crown was placed I was in a TON of pain). I had a really bad root canal about 20 years ago (cried for most of it and then passed out at one point because the pain was so bad) and was very nervous about having another one done. Dr. Shaikh completely put me at ease. He listened to my explain my dental history and prior root canal experience as well as my concerns about pain. He assured me he would make it as pain free as possible and laid out all of my options clearly in a way I could fully understand. We made the plan to move forward with the root canal and it was one of the easiest dental procedures I have ever had in my life! I felt absolutely zero pain through the whole procedure. He kept me in the loop about what was happening as we went along and continued to check on me to see how I was doing. The whole experience was 1,000 times better than what I expected when I went in and I am so grateful for him and his team. While nobody wants to go through the experience of having a root canal, I can say that if I had to do it again tomorrow I wouldn't even hesitate to book with him again. Had a wonderful experience with assistant fallen and Dr. Shaikh doing a root canal. This is my 3rd one and I can say this is the most comfortable I've been getting my teeth worked on. Both Dr. Shaikh and fallen answered all my questions and reassured me when I was a bit scared. This was my second successful & pain free root canal done by Dr Shaikh. He is gentle & shows much concern on how I'm feeling. The assistant made sure I was comfortable, offering me blankets, a pillow for my knees, & water, even without my asking. I wasn't happy when my dentist said I would need a root canal and sent me to Hawaii Endodontics. Being my first root canal and hearing horror stories of his painful they can be, I was dreading it. The building and office itself is nice. I didn't really believe Dr Kang when he said I wouldn't feel any pain. After numbing my gums I did not feel any shooting pain, just some pressure every now and then. Dr Kang was very reassuring and calm throughout the whole procedure. You're in good hands with him and sounds like the other doctors are great also. I felt some pain days later maybe because I mistakenly chewed on it during Thanksgiving eating way too much food as I tend to do! Before getting a crown installed I wanted to make sure everything was ok so made another appointment. They found a slot for me and Dr Kang determined it was probably inflammation causing the pain when I tried to open my mouth wide open. He ran a cold test and when I bit down I didn't feel pain so he said the tooth was fine. It feels crazy to say I had a good experience getting a root canal but that is what happened. I was referred to Dr. Shaikh by my Dentist for a possible root canal procedure for severe tooth pain. From the very first visit Dr. Shaikh left a remarkable impression on me. He was very kind, knowledgable, and professional. He performed a thorough assessment, took the time to explain all treatment options, and answered any questions that I had. When it came to procedure day, being that this would be my first root canal, I was anxious/fearful about the pain factor. However, Dr. Shaikh and his assistant did an absolutely fantastic job of keeping me comfortable, at ease, and pain-free during the entirety of the procedure, always checking to see if I was okay.
