I had such a terrible experience with my longtime dentist's office. What started as a routine cleaning turned into being told I needed two root canals after mentioning that one tooth hurt slightly when flossing. I take very good care of my teeth, so I was shocked by the diagnosis and price it would be. I spoke with a friend later that day, who suggested I get a second opinion from an endodontist before moving forward with such invasive and expensive dental work. I was able to schedule an appointment with Island Endodontics fairly quickly, and I'm so glad I did. The office was easy to find, had convenient parking, and was located in a beautiful building. Everything was extremely clean, modern, and equipped with what appeared to be the latest technology, not what I was used to seeing at my previous dentist's office! The staff was welcoming, friendly, and professional from the moment I arrived. Dr. Noz took the time to listen to my recent experience, reviewed my X-rays, and examined my teeth. He discovered that the tooth I was concerned about actually had a crack from an old filling. He even mentioned that recommending a root canal after just one test seemed like a significant jump for this particular issue. Although he doesn't typically perform fillings, he was kind enough to help me with this one and also provided referrals to other dentists he trusts. Within a few weeks, the filling was repaired, and I can happily say that it completely resolved the discomfort I was experiencing. I had a lingering headache for 10 years on the side where a Root Canal had been done. I was referred by Dr. Nip of Dental Day spa to see Dr. Noz Yamauchi of Island EndOdontics. Dr. Noz Yamauchi used some amazing 3D Scanning technology that not only showed infection under my tooth but clearly displayed an almost 1/2 inch gap where my bone had deteriorated. 6 months later I am still pain free and can't wait to see him in 6 more months to see how much of the bone has grown back! Dr. Yamauchi saved my tooth when no one else could on this island. I recently moved to the island from San Francisco and while putting everyone else's needs first for the past few years (including an ailing husband and three young kids), I failed to schedule routine appointments for me. I figured I'd be just fine since I take good care of my teeth. I was wrong. I had a very advanced cavity under an inlay and the dentist here on island said I would need it EXTRACTED- which was a shock to me. I didn't think I would ever need a tooth extraction in my life. That would have a been a nightmare with a full extraction then and implant. I sent my x-rays to my dentist back home and he thought there was a chance of saving it. If no one on island could save my tooth I was going to fly out to SF to see what my old dentist and his endo staff could do for me. Thankfully it didn't get to that thanks to Dr. Yamauchi. I reached out to my neighborhood social group of moms and one of the moms said Dr. Y saved her tooth when no one else could. Island Endo got me in right away and Dr. Yamauchi agreed my tooth was in really bad shape but he could save it. He is personable, knowledgeable, and has really cool technology in his office to see a 3D rotating image of your tooth to see the damage and potential for saving it. He got me in super quickly, the root canal was 100% painless, and he did a build up of the tooth. I'm typing this the day after my treatment and I have ZERO pain. This guy is amazing. His staff is wonderful, friendly and accommodating. The only time I have seen staff this friendly is at the Four Seasons or Halekulani. I hope to never be back at Island Endo simply because I've learned my lesson and will put myself in the long line of appointments for my family. But, if I ever need to send a friend or family member to an endodontist, I know exactly where to send them. This guy is the real deal and will do what's right for your dental health. After being in mega pain to the point that I completely avoided chewing on the left side of my mouth and ate mostly soft room temperature food...it was time. I couldn't put it off anymore. My first root canal. My dentist recommended Dr. Yamauchi, and I am so glad she did! Let me just say that I hate needles, have a low threshold for pain, and am a huge cry baby when it comes to my teeth. Dr. Yamauchi and his staff were so calming to talk to and I'm not over exaggerating, I didn't even feel the needle when he numbed me for the procedure! The rest was so relaxing that I kept drifting in and out of sleep until he woke me up and told me I was done. I was also really grateful that no one made me feel embarrassed for drooling or for pulling a Kevin from The Office once I woke up and realized that I really had to go to the bathroom. At the end, I was given a nice warm wrapped oshibori (hot hand towel) to wipe my mouth and hands, as well as a choice of a cute chapstick to take home! Seriously, thank you! Dr Yamauchi is a definite 10+! I saw him about 4 years ago when I needed a root canal and he did an outstanding job. I was in NV and told by a dentist there last week that I needed a tooth extracted, and an implant and crown placed. I emailed the x-rays to Dr Y and he felt he might be able to save the tooth. I knew that if anyone could do it, it was Dr Y. I flew in specifically to see him and he made room for me in his busy schedule... did he not save my tooth? Yes he did! It was worth flying in for; he has my total trust and respect. Such a pleasure in this day and age to have a Dr that truly cares about YOU and makes you a priority. Island Endodontics/Dr. Noz is without question one of the most professional, caring, astute, knowledgable medical practices I've ever seen. Believe all the glowing reviews here. It is all genuine. The great reviews are warranted. I may have needed a root canal, suspected due to jaw pain. Dr. Noz determined that it most likely is not what I need. He explained that the root canal procedure's invasive nature may weaken the tooth substantially. He gave me tips on how to be aware of clenching my jaw, the most likely source of my pain. He fitted me with a temporary guard to retard my propensity to clench until I can get a permanent guard from my regular dentist. His concern was for my dental health. He treats you like a friend. His staff is also of the utmost professionalism and gentle care, so much so, I was in fact surprised. They are a cut above the usual very good care you receive in most offices. Scheduled an appointment and didn't start until an hour later. Fixed a routine filling and I went home and had pain and bleeding in my gums for a week. Also, there was a rotting smell coming from the tooth. After a week I flossed aggressively and what looked like a piece of my gums came out. The rotting smell was gone. This review is for any other general dentists who may want to refer patients to Dr. Yamauchi. Just do it! He's by far one of the best endodontists I've worked with in my almost 20 years of treating patients. He's conservative and will always give his honest opinion, even if it means he won't be doing a root canal. Dr. Yamauchi is part of a dental implant study club which shows he's passionate not just about his own specialty but also wants to become well versed in the options in case a root canal is not the best choice. I always appreciate specialists who spend the extra time to become knowledgeable in other areas. His technique is impeccable too. His office and equipment is state of the art including a cone beam CT scan to help find those pesky hidden canals and abscesses. And his restorative is amazing, especially for a specialist. Seeing his post and core work, and his rebuilding broken teeth with temporaries, I'd think he was an experienced general dentist but he's an endodontist, pretty cool. Makes life easy for me too because I prefer to have the tooth ready for me to prepare when everything is done. I'm so glad I'm working with him, and it's icing on the cake that his office is just down the hall from mine. In addition to being incredibly knowledgeable and professional, Dr. Yamauchi is just plain awesome. He's young and handsome and that's really irritating for fat, ugly guys like me who thought karma balanced things out. It doesn't, he's perfect. Additionally, his staff is warm, wonderful and compassionate (and even gave me some travel tips about Japan!). But lets get to the reason I saw him: Referral by my dentist. Dr. Yamauchi did one preliminary treatment in his state-of-the-art office, he then consulted with my dentist and later called me at home (who does that?!?!) and clearly explained my options and what he would be doing when I came back. During the final treatment he checked on my well-being, explained things as we progressed then let me know when we were about done. He followed up with a phone call (himself) to check on me the next day -- again, who does that?!?! By the way, NO PAIN during or after treatment. He and his team are polite, thoughtful, professional and thorough. I've never had that experience before -- especially from a busy health professional. Okay so I have to disclose that Dr. Yamauchi is a friend of mine, but I should also let you all know that I am like deathly afraid of dentists. In fact anything to do with human anatomy from a medical standpoint, particularly my anatomy, I want no person, professional or whatever, to drill, medicate, inject, cut me open, draw blood, etc etc. A few weeks ago, I was reluctantly sitting through a dental checkup at my usual dentist's office when he gave me the awful news that I may need a root canal after taking a look at my X-ray. A WHAT? A root canal?? Doesn't that just sound awful? Like someone is going to literally dig a canal through the roots of my precious teeth? I asked the good dentist how long I could wait before getting it done, and he of course looked at me like I was crazy. I notified Dr. Yamauchi right away. I mean if anyone was going to be performing a root canal on me, I was only going to see the BEST endodontist ever. You see, the advantage of having an endodontist as a friend is not just that you can email him your X-ray for a second opinion. Or that he'll text to check up on you when you run away to the mainland for a few weeks immediately after finding out you need a root canal (okay so that trip was pre-planned... regardless!). But the real advantage to knowing an endodontist (or any medical professional for that matter) on a personal level, is that you get to know who their character and their values outside of the professional setting. I happen to know that Dr. Yamauchi comes from a lineage of great dentists. I also happen to know that he went to the best dental school ever (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, GO TARHEELS!). And I also know he spends time outside of the long hours he already spends at work, researching and perfecting his craft, and studying alongside his professional peers. He even sacrifices time with his precious young family to volunteer at dental clinics for underserved populations. So I was more than comfortable to go to his office last Friday and know that I was going to be in the best hands possible, because I happen to know that he is someone who truly loves what he does and deeply cares about his patients' well-being. As for my root canal? Well luckily the decay hadn't strayed too far and I got away with a filling! While you enjoy the view from the 8th floor of the Ala Moana Building, you'll be in the hands of his lovely staff who were oh so kind and turned a blind eye to my iced sugary sweet caramel macchiato. And you'll be in the great hands of Dr. Yamauchi who took the time to explain my procedure (and even showed me cool photos afterwards of my treatment), and BEST OF ALL, managed to give me pain-free injections of local anesthesia (so there was no previous need for me to beg to be knocked out). I went about my day, completely forgetting I had even been to his office as I had no lingering side effects. I was impressed immediately upon making my appointment with Island Endodontics. Shortly after getting off the phone with them, I received an email that contained everything I needed to know to prepare for my appointment. The reception area was comfortable and well-decorated. The area where the procedures are done was bright and airy, and everything was spotlessly clean. Everyone I encountered during my visits was really competent and really friendly. Jenifer, the dental assistant that prepped me for both visits, was very sweet. She made my comfort a priority, which helped put me at ease. My endodontist was Dr. Yamauchi, who was really nice and the most informative doctor I've ever had. To be honest, I was dreading my appointment because I had a bad experience with a dentist when I was a kid and have always been a little hesitant ever since, especially when it comes to the dreaded anesthetic needle! I had nothing to worry about. I didn't feel a thing during the entire procedure, not even while getting the anesthesia, and never did have any pain (even in the days after the root canal). I was most impressed with how this office embraced technology to make their operation more efficient. I was able to fill out my "new patient" info online so that I wouldn't have to come early to my appointment. Their x-rays are taken digitally, so no more sharp x-ray films cutting into the roof of your mouth. At different stages of my root canal, Dr. Yamauchi took pictures of my tooth, which he showed me afterwards on his monitor so I saw exactly what he did during the procedure. The things that made my experience memorable is the incredible skill of my orthodontist, and also the little personal touches I saw everywhere: a pitcher of iced lemon water in the waiting area, good background music playing overhead, jaw massages after having my mouth open for an hour, follow-up calls to make sure I was doing okay in the days after my appointments. I have never experienced this level of attention to detail at any other healthcare-related office, let alone at any other dental office. These folks put a lot of effort into making sure that their patients have a good experience, and I appreciated it. I scheduled an appointment with Dr Yamauchi after my tooth had been hurting for months and i couldnt take it anymore. The appointment process was seemless. The front desk was able to get me in the same day! The office was in a very central location next to the mall. The office was VERY CLEAN. Dr Yamauchi was extremely thorough. He made me feel at ease from the beginning to the end. His dental assistant Jo was very thorough as well. After taking numerous Xrays, he was able to tell me i needed a root canal and a wisdom tooth extraction. I will admit I felt a little embarrassed not having taken care of this sooner! But there was no signs of judgement at the clinic, which made me feel very comfortable. They showed me pics of my teeth and where the work needed to be done. They also showed me pics of the progression (after) of the treatment which i very much appreciated. I was mostly impressed by the time they spent with me, and how Dr yamauchi showed me the xrays and explained the pathology and treatment approach. As a physician I appreciate when colleagues are able to do this for our patients. I went to Dr. Yamauchi by recommendation. I called to schedule my appointment and the receptionist took my call and personal/medical information within 5 minutes. Not your typical first time appointment calls...they are efficient! Upon arriving at their clinic, I was blown away by the ambience of their office. Their front desk staff were quick to assist and made sure I had all my paperwork. After my consultation with Dr. Yamauchi, he called to follow up and check how I was doing. I had a very bad toothache that was so unbearable. I wasn't able to get an appointment with my primary dentist. Dr. Noz took me in right away and for that I am thankful. I have a bad case of dizziness and laying down is extremely hard for me. Dr. Noz was very compassionate and worked with what he could. If you are looking to Yelp to help you find a great Endodontist, don't let the lack of reviews deter you from coming here. I was referred to Island Endodontics by my general dentist for a root canal. Never having had a root canal or other work requiring a dental specialist, I was a bit nervous considering all the bad things people say about it. Every aspect of this office is pleasant and professional. The woman who runs the front desk was very nice, emailed me a link for on-line registration, and gave me a breakdown of cost estimates. I was told by my general dentist that he himself had dental work done here and that both endodontists are excellent. I was scheduled with Dr Nogueiro who took x-rays of the tooth in question (lucky #13), did a tap test, temperature test, and discussed with me why the root canal was necessary. Everything is high tech, from the x-rays, microscopic equipment, and digital camera to document the procedure. Dr Nogueiro and his wonderful assistant (Jo?) seemed to be especially concerned about my comfort level and I was pleasantly surprised that the root canal was no more distressing than a regular filling. Even his technique for administering the numbing agent was skillful - I felt pressure, no pain. The most discomfort I experienced during this entire ordeal was a tired jaw but I was glad that it was a thorough, not rushed, procedure and that the process was explained before, during and after. He even reviewed the photo documentation with me which I found very fascinating and educational. Seriously, for an event that I hope I never have to repeat, I feel much better knowing there are endodontists like Dr. Nogueiro around. read more

I don't normally leave reviews but this one in particular just had to be done... I needed a root canal done so I was referred to Island Endodontics by my dentist. Just hearing "root canal" makes me cringe so I was really nervous going in. But thank goodness for Dr. Nogueira... he was AMAZING! He is very knowledgeable and explained the procedure and the some, thoroughly. He was very easy to talk to and made me feel really comfortable. When it came to the numbing it was absolutely painless! During the procedure he explained what he was doing and always asked if I was okay. I felt a little discomfort during the procedure but he numbed me up a little more and it was smooth sailing after that. After everything was done Dr. Nogueira explained what had been done using the pictures that he had taken during the procedure and mentioned that I had a C-shaped root which are more difficult to work on. If he hadn't mentioned this, I would have never known it was a bit more harder for him because he is THAT good... he didn't break a sweat and the procedure went as fast as I could've hoped. I don't know if anyone else had mentioned their staff but they are awesome as well! Jo was the chair-side assistant during my procedure and she was great! Dr Yamauchi is an outstanding Endodontist. Firstly, I am in the dental field and hell ya I get scared of new procedures and being worked on. Dr Noz is such a professional, explained everything before proceeding, gentle touch with beautiful results. Local anesthesia was a breeze. Pain when I went in, absolutely pain free after procedure. Root Canals are not cheap, but he is in the ideal range for the amount of comfort and the beautiful work that he does. He is also fast and up to date with technology. If you need a root canal, or have problems with a previously done root canal, I would definitely recommend Dr Yamauchi. He is extremely good at what he does, super knowledgeable and uses modern technology, unlike the root canals of the past. He even has 3D imaging in office which shows what other x-rays don't. Example, I lived with chronic mild to moderate gum swelling and some pain for years after I had a root canal done by another dentist 12 years ago. I have had so many X-rays over the years that revealed no problems. Finally it got so bad my new dentist sent me to Dr Yamauchi to check it out. I got the 3D image which showed a huge infection and bone loss which did not show up on a regular X-ray. Turns out he had to fix a previous root canal and it has been better ever since. So that tooth is saved. And he performed an emergency root canal on a different tooth a few weeks ago, fit me into his schedule immediately and did a great job. Dr Yamauchi really cares about his patients, and personally called to followup on my progress after each procedure. He doesn't rush his work and does a thorough job. He quoted me a price that included followup visits at no additional charge if necessary. I think his pricing is fair considering his quality. Parking is in Ala Moana shopping center so plan on an extra 15 minutes to park. read more

I was not really familiar with the term "Endodontist" until my teenage son had to go after suffering 1 week of severe toothache during his trip. I was highly recommended by my friend who was just treated by Dr. Yamauchi, and I'm glad I took her advise! They accommodated us with the late afternoon appointment but I was still running late due to traffic so I called the office to let them know. Their answer was, "Don't worry, please drive safe!" After 30 minutes of delay, we walked into this cozy office and sat down on the cute love seat with 2 cushions on both ends. My son had no problem making himself at home on this comfy couch. I also found myself engaging in conversation with another couple in the office because it was like we were in our living room. Magazines were lined up perfectly across the long table (I know this is not important but being a meticulous Japanese, I pay attention to detail like this.....) OK, enough with my 1st impression of the office. Let's get down to business. Dr. Yamauchi invited me in although my son was old enough to go alone. I was very impressed with the way he spent the quality time examining and explaining the situation using the high-tech equipment including amazing 3D X-ray!!! We both learned so much in his "Endo 101" class that we were totally comfortable with his diagnosis and treatment. X-ray results were instantly available on the computer & X-ray monitors, and again he was very informative and thorough going over the results. I know he was juggling multiple patients at the same time, but because he was very efficient in managing multi-tasks, he didn't make himself appear busy in front us at all. He took his time in answering all the questions so no surprises, no secrets! I feel that Dr. Yamauchi is truly a sincere person who is passionate about educating and helping people of dental care needs. I was referred to Dr. Noguiera after a bad root canal. I was a bit apprehensive because I'd never been to an Endodontist before but the staff at Island Endodontics were very nice as well as, very professional. However, Dr Noguiera was the best. He explained exactly what was wrong and what needed to be done. He was very gentle and I never felt any pain during any of the four visits I had with him. The first was a consult and the next three were the actual procedures. At each visit I felt more comfortable and confident in Dr Noguiera and his staff. My name is Ryan R. I've been suffering for the past two years a really bad tooth ache. Most of the time I can handle the pain till it goes away without seeing a Dentist lasting a few minutes or so. However ignoring it's warnings I ended up with a huge abscess with pain I would hardly bare . This time the pain didn't go away. I was educated during the whole procedure and felt almost no pain while we worked on my tooth. I walked out of their office feeling like a part of family there. If you need any type of endoontic treatment, you WANT to go to Island Endodontics. TRUST ME. My dad was having constant pain on one of his front teeth which was shown to be a cavity that went so deep that it hit the nerve and caused an abscess. Unfortunately for him, he needed root canal treatment, but on the other hand, luckily for him he was set up for an appointment at Island Endodontics. He was seen the same day the phone call was made, and I'm so grateful to them for being able to squeeze him in. When we first walked in, the girls up front are really nice, and greet you with a smile. The registration system is completely computer-based, so instead of traditionally filling out forms, their system is more advanced. There's some lemon water in the front for those that are thirsty which is a really nice touch. My dad was seen by Dr. Noz Yamauchi, who was really nice and explained very thoroughly what he would be doing during the procedure. I left my dad there during the procedure and came back after they were done. Yes, Dr. Yamauchi finished the whole procedure! I couldn't express my joy enough that my dad finally would get rid of his pain. He takes pictures throughout the procedure so he can explain to you what was done throughout the whole treatment process. So the verdict? After the anesthesia went away, my dad said there was absolutely no pain anymore. Yay! Hopefully I don't ever need a root canal, but if I ever do, I'm going to Island Endodontics. read more

I was having quite a bit of pain that wasn't going away, so my dentist recommended I see Dr. Yamauchi. The entire process was seamless and pain free. The staff is very professional and extremely efficient, which are traits I value most in healthcare providers. Dr. Yamauchi very clearly explained each step of the process as he was went through the appointment. At the end, he provided his cell phone number in case I had a problem after hours. Most (I think all) reviews for Island Endodontics are for Dr. Yamauchi. This review will be for Dr. Nogueira. I was referred Dr. Nogueira by my dentist due to a failed root canal. Although I did not experience any pain, infection persisted and my root canal required an apicoectomy. I did research on the procedure and honestly... pictures and descriptions online frightened me. Just the thought of having someone flap a section of my gum made me cringe. However, I met Dr. Nogueira for consultation and he went over the entire process step by step with me, assuring me that I would feel nothing at all. With my past history of horrible dentist visits, yes I had some trust issues to what he said but consented anyway. The Procedure: On the day of, the assistant working with me made sure I was comfortable at the chair as much as possible. Dr. Nogueira went over any last minute concerns with me, and began with the anesthetic portion. This was [oddly] the best part. At first, I grasped the hand rest expecting to feel the slight pinch I normally would, but when he injected me, I felt nothing. All I felt was pressure, and nothing more. I was completely caught off guard, it was almost as if he had special training in how to inject patients. Moments passed, and by the time I was numb... He proceeded with the incisions. Again, I felt nothing... just pressure. However at one point, I did feel a stabbing pain when he probably touched an area that was not localized. That was the worst few seconds of my life but he immediately injected me and that was that. Other than that, the procedure seemed to take at least an hour to finish. He uses a special micro technology in capturing photos while working, so I was able to see pictures of the work performed when it was done. All I can say is, Dr. Nogueira is highly knowledgeable about his expertise and always seems to have the right answer to every question. Not to mention, both he and his staff always makes sure the patients are comfortable in their office. I've already been to about 3 follow up appointments and the apico is clearing up pretty well, now almost fully healed (one year later). Job well done :) If I ever have to have a root canal or other endo work (forbid this ever happening) in the future again, Dr. Nogueira would be the first on my list. Yes, I know I had a bad experience of a few seconds of pain that one time.. but that really doesn't seem enough to outweigh all the good that came from this experience. read more

I experienced excruciating shooting pain in my mouth when I flew on a plane from Puerto Rico to Dallas. My dentist couldn't find anything wrong and thought it was sinus pain. A few months later coming home to Honolulu from San Diego the pain was so severe it was like getting hit with a defibrillator. My dentist suggested an evaluation by Dr. Yamauchi. He spent a lot of time trying to figure out which tooth if any it was. It's hard to duplicate a problem that only happens at 35,000 ft. After an extensive exam, he was very confident that he knew the tooth that needed the root canal even though the x-rays didn't confirm anything. He offered to do the root canal right then on the same day as the first evaluation. As soon as he removed the existing filling he found a crack in the tooth that didn't show on any of the x-rays. An hour later I left feeling confident enough to get back on a plane without fear of getting electrical shocks in my mouth every few seconds. Great staff, extremely modern and hi-tech equipment, excellent chair-side manner, explained everything in detail and even took a photo of the cracked tooth to show me. He's very gentle and considerate unlike some endodontists, even when numbing you up, it didn't hurt at all. Overall a 5-star experience. Nobody ever wants a root-canal but if you have to have one, don't settle for anyone other than Dr. Yamauchi. read more
