The visit with another dentist was adequate but not with the level of care, depth of knowledge and attention to detail we receive with Dr. Patel. A "regular" visit always includes a screening for oral cancer. We have never received this depth with any other dental office in the 7 states where we lived. Now we undertake the 45 minute to 1 hour drive to see him twice each year. He accepts our dental insurance (Delta Dental). There have been no long waits to be served. I received dental work before Covid and it was fine. recently I returned for more work. scheduling the appointment, a young woman there, ( the manager , did not offer her name) interrupted me multiple times only to speak to me in a patronizing tone. I figured she may just have had a bad day. at my appointment she did it again. that's not good. the dentist is stressful enough. why volunteer to swim SNARK infested waters as well? I am sorry to say that as much as I love the ocean view, and the cool jazz, a qualified dentist as well as many state of the art Procedures. Dr. Patel is a nice guy, however I seriously question the quality of his work as well as decision making when hiring staff. After getting a cleaning and some fillings in June 2024, I went abroad for some travel. Two of the fillings came out while I was in South East Asia requiring me to cancel several important events in order to have them replaced while over seas. I understand that fillings are not always permanent, but to come out that quickly seems suspect. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As far as the staff goes, the office manager has an absolute lack of respect for customers both over the phone and by email. I will say the 2 stars I'm giving are for the great staff working there. However, I have had my new upper plate for approximately 2 years and during those 2 years they have broken 3 times in all different places each time. My previous pair I had for 10 years and they never broke once so I'm not sure what the problem is this time other than the quality of the denture. Unfortunately, I am on the mainland now and unable to return to the office but am completely disappointed and hope they will answer my email and help me figure out how to remedy this. Say Goodbye to Dental Anxiety! This is a long review, but it's written with my fellow dental anxiety sufferers in mind. Ok, so I waited a little while to review because I had so many things I needed to get done on my teeth and wanted to give my honest feedback. As a person who had extreme dental anxiety and had experienced a lot of pain and shame at other dentist visits I was very apprehensive to go to my first appointment at Hawaii Pacific Dental Group. But, if you are dentist averse like myself you will know there is a time that comes when you can't ignore the problem anymore... mind numbing pain, teeth breaking or falling out, broken crowns etc. You name it, I pretty much know what you feel like. Well the time came when I had no other choice but go cause a tooth just fell out, so I called a friend to ask where she went to the dentist and she told me "Dr. Patel and his staff are the best!!" Let me tell you, she was not wrong. My first appointment I was so nervous and ashamed but when I entered the office the staff really put me at ease. It also doesn't feel super "dentist-y" and it is a pretty relaxing environment with nice music and candles to ward off that typical dentist office smell. As I was escorted back to the treatment room I could not help but start crying after the X-rays had been done because of the shame and fear I felt. Dr. Patel and his hygienist Shea were so empathetic when I told them about a couple bad past experiences (I had gotten some novocaine injected wrong one time by a dentist and it felt like I was having the worst anxiety ever, and also how I have been shamed by a dentist before for having a dental abscess). Honestly there has been no pain in any of my procedures here. I've had crowns, cleaning, teeth extracted, dental implants placed and numerous x-rays. The main reasons you should come here over any other dental office: -The staff here are so friendly, professional and compassionate. -The office is very clean and sanitary. -They have the most cutting edge technology... you can get a crown prepped and made in one visit, so no more temporary crowns. Dr. Patel can do implants so you don't need to see a special other dentist. -Dr.Patel and staff answer questions honestly and give a range of solutions on how to deal with your dental issues- not money driven like I've heard some others are. -Dr. Patel donates time and his services to less fortunate and disabled that cannot afford the life changing dental treatment they need. The only things I regret are not finding Dr. Patel sooner, and the countless hours of my life I wasted stressing out about my teeth. This was my first visit with a new dentist in 40 years. Unfortunately,I needed a new crown. They have the latest technology, clean, friendly office, and Dr. Patel is the best of the best. I am so glad I switched to Dr. Patel and his hygienist, Andrea, a couple of years ago! Dr. Patel is warm, thorough, and skilled. Andrea runs a tight ship and cleans teeth really completely with very little pain. The office is very modern and has the latest equipment; I've never had to wait for my appointment for more than a few minutes. What I most appreciate, though, about Dr. Patel is the fact that he is the only dentist I've had who does a thorough oral cancer screening. Thanks to him, a rare carcinoma on the side of my tongue was biopsied and determined to be cancer before it had a chance to spread. Were it not for Dr. Patel's referring me for a biopsy, I might have found myself having much more significant surgery later on, and possibly a shorter lifespan. Eternally grateful!!! read more

This review is long overdue! I have been a patient of Dr. Patel since 2010/2011 -ish. At that time I was on the hunt for a good dentist. I had several traumatic experiences with some really awful and unprofessional dentists! These negative experiences gave me full on dental phobia. It is really is embarrassing but Dr. Patel put me at ease and never ever makes me feel ashamed of my anxiousness. Each time I go it gets a tad bit easier. Growing up, I didn't go to the dentist regularly so when I started to get regular care I needed to have a lot of work done. Fillings, sealants, crowns, root canals, and my wisdoms needed to be pulled. In addition to the dental phobia which includes: sweating, increased heart rate, nausea, and just literally wanting to run far away from any dentist- I also have a REALLY SENSITIVE GAG REFLEX. The combination of poor dental care, dental phobia and a sensitive gag reflex made me much rather want to cut off my own leg with a butter knife than go to the dentist! However, I'm happy to report that with Dr. Patel he has helped with all these obstacles I had to overcome. Dr. Patel is so gentle, patient, kind and a thorough health care professional I have ever been to! He really sets the standard of care High! I appreciate him for taking time and dealing with my nervous anxious diva self. I missed a couple years of cleanings recently due to insurance issues. I recently got insurance and found out that it's not one of the covered plans that work with Dr. Patel's office. So instead of finding a new dentist I bought a second plan! This is how much I like going to Dr. Patel! After a couple year hiatus I am happy to say I have no cavities!!! I am even working through my phobia and getting Invisalign from his office! Yay!!! I have been to many dentists and feel I've finally encountered the Best! Dr. Patel is very gentle and kind and very efficient. He performed an implant and to my surprise was the most comfortable, quick, and efficient experience I've ever had! I don't like having cavities done in silver or any cheap materials since fillings are meant to be temporary. I wanted one to be permanent ... preferably last me more than a decade or longer. Gold alloy filling is supposedly the best - contracts and expands in your teeth when subject to heat or cold. Gold alloy filling cost me nearly $1K to get (insurance does not cover it, so I paid out-of-pocket). I don't buy designer Louis Vuitton bags, get facials every month, or even mani-pedis. I spend my money on stuff that's important to me, my health & well-being. Like expensive fillings. Wahines can walk around with their $800 LV purses at Ala Moana to show off .. people will probably assume you bought a knock-off from eBay. Doesn't impress people. I simply open my damn mouth, point to my filling & I can impress a dozen people in less den da time it takes to say "Shazam!" But, anyways, previous dentist stopped accepting HDS; forced to stop seeing him. Researched all on da Internet looking for someone trustworthy, down-to-earth, and knew their technological shiznits. I ended up with Dr. Patel. He assured me that a ceramic filling done with some high-tech machine would fit perfectly into my tooth (drilled out my cavity, took a sonar device & scanned my tooth sans-cavity, machine creates a 3-D enamel filling that'll be bonded with my natural enamel), would be sealed with some high-tech heating gun thingy, would be superior to my gold filling previously done by another dentist. Assured me it was the latest-greatest-bestest-will-turn-your-crap-into-gold type of thing. BOLLOCKS!! Bad enough was when he didn't want to give me additional anesthesia while drilling my friggen tooth & hitting a nerve despite 3, not 1 or 2, but TREE (like apple tree!) attempts to raise my left hand to get some pain meds cuz I can feel da drill hitting a nerve. It wasn't some minor pain either. Keeps telling me to, "Wait, just a lil' more .... just a lil more ..." Brah, I'm 1/2 Korean & I'm from da Big Island, you keep telling me dat, I'm gonna karate-chop your ass back into ..." But I digress ... Because of that, I tried to find another dentist to see. Found one a few months later. New dentist discovers that my expensive ceramic inlay/filling has chipped .... not to mention, there's a friggen cavity growing on da same damn tooth dat got da $800+ filling!!! FLOCK MY LIFE. Suffice to say, avoid my $800 mistake & avoid seeing this seemingly sadistic arsehole who can't even do an excellent job on a really, really expensive filling. (If a patient is in pain, who cares if you're nearly finished doing a feeling! It's imperative you take care to ease your patient's pain and suffering.) We selected Dr Rohinton Patel because he is featured in the Honolulu Magazine 2017 "Best Dentists in Hawaii." We initially had problems reaching his office -- even for directions. Calls either went to voice mail, or were answered with, "Can you please hold?" My wife and I only visited once. In our view his dental hygienist was a nasty piece of work. My wife has a sensitive gag reflex so finds the x-ray process difficult. The hygienist message was, essentially, "It's all in your mind -- get over it." Only a few x-rays could be taken. I had fewer problems with the x-ray process and began the cleaning process -- only to find the hygienist nasty and prickly. When I asked her to please stop for a moment I got a sigh as she rolled her eyes upwards. Who wants that type of insensitive treatment? We saw Dr Patel and he told us how wonderful he was, and told my wife and I about all of the dental work we both needed -- replacement of "old" fillings, etc. Marjorie had a "cracked" molar that needed to be capped, etc. I had a tooth that needed to be extracted, and Dr Patel said he could do this himself, in his office. I also needed to have "old" fillings replaced. My wife decided to pass on the cleaning -- and when we both got back to the car we decided we didn't want to continue with Dr Patel's dental practice. We called Dr Patel and told him so. He did say that his hygienist could be "abrupt" -- or words to that effect. He said if we wished to continue with his office he would personally clean our teeth. We made an appointment with another dentist later the same week. We brought along our new x-rays, less than a week old. At the new dentist the new, friendly technician was able to take all of my wife's x-rays. Four or five of my x-rays needed to be re-done because they were incomplete. I was referred to an oral surgeon to have my molar removed. I do not need the extensive work suggested by Dr Patel. My wife, interestingly, needs NO dental work. The "crack" on her tooth was plaque, and was easily removed. Her teeth are now clean -- and her next appointment is early next year for a follow-up cleaning. Dr Patel's office is not fancy. I laughed at the corner shelves that looked like they were from Home Depot and put up by someone who had no idea what they were doing. I had to put my Kindle in a basket on the floor -- there was no shelf for patients' belongings. Dr Patel is slick -- but, based upon our experience and in our opinion (solely as patients), he seems more interested in doing the work (some unnecessary) and collecting the money. I have no idea how he landed on the Honolulu Magazine list -- but I know I won't trust their lists in the future. In my view -- avoid this dentist and his nasty hygenist. Scary stuff. I woke up one morning with a swollen cheek and pain in my gums when I chewed. It was a Saturday but I knew that I had to find a dentist. I began calling around but it was difficult to find a dentist for an emergency appointment. I came across Hawaii Pacific Dental Group on the web. They immediately gave me an appointment for that day. It was within an hour the I found myself in a dental chair. Dr. Patel and his team were friendly, understanding, patient, and thorough. They explained each step of their examination and explained the reason for my pain and inflammation. They provided me a treatment that had put me back on the road to repair the damage that was found. The pain and swelling had disappeared by the next day. This dental team really knows their stuff. I am recommending their fantastic service. read more

I was contacted by someone from this business threatening me with persecution via libel laws. I was told that my total treatment estimate was actually $42,000 plus tax - not the $60,000 or more that I stated in my review. I was also told that my "one star review was unfair" and asked to "remove the erroneous numbers." I have asked the person to provide me with an e-mail address as I kept all treatment plans and receipts on a thumb drive. This is why I'm going to revise my review to exact dollar amounts taken from the paperwork given to me by this dentist's office. The treatment plan I was initially given the bottom right of my mouth was for $23,047 with $1,000 to come from HDS. The second I was given had two figures on it. One was titled "Fee" or "Pat" with $43,873.20 underneath and the other was for "Fee 1" for $47,660. To me, that is approximately $60K for the two treatment plans. It could be I made a mistake and my treatment plan is only the second treatment plan, in which case the dentist's approximation of about "$42K plus tax" is correct. The other issue brought to my attention was that I did not pay the amounts that I stated in my review. I have a bill dated 3/24/11 with entries for "Comp oral eval-new/estab pat" for $63.80 and "Panoramic film" for $81.60. My estimates of about $100 were exaggerated. I also have a bill dated 1/20/11 with an entry for "Limited oral evaluation" for $44.40. I think this pretty much covers the issue that were found with my review. read more

I have had a life long dread of going to the dentist. Extremely sensitive teeth, prone to cavities, and novacaine is only marginally effective for me. It wasn't unusual for me to have a numerous fillings required as a kid, and each one was agony. I literally have nightmares about being in the dentist chair. So when I say Dr. Patel is the best dentist I have ever seen, it's saying something. I've been going to him for the last 9 years, and he's done extensive work. Numerous crowns, fillings and even an implant. He's got the latest technology, and is able to fabricate crowns while you wait. No more wearing an uncomfortable temporary and having to go back in a couple weeks! The best part is how he is able to greatly minimize the pain and discomfort, and is extremely sensitive to what an ordeal it is for me. A number of times, when I was traveling or abroad, I broke a tooth or lost a filling, and I was able to speak to Dr. Patel and get some advice on what to do until I could get home. When I did return, his office has always been great about seeing me quickly, to deal with my tooth crisis. I'm never going to enjoy going to the dentist, but at least with Dr. Patel, I know that the work will be done quickly, efficiently, and with the least amount of pain and discomfort, by a dentist who goes the extra mile for his patients. I came to Dr. Patel while 4 months pregnant for a routine cleaning back in January. I was told I had a simple filling that needed to be done. So I made another appointment and had everything taken care of. After a week my tooth was killing me. Dr. Patel explained there might be pain after the filling, but it persisted another week. I made yet another appointment to have Dr. Patel examine the tooth. He said it was a root canal. Very strange since my dental history was excellent, with only small fillings. He referred me to a specialist. The root canal specialist examined my tooth and was shocked to find out Dr. Patel referred me to her at all. She said it was CLEARLY not a root canal and that my tooth was healthy. She then sent me to an oral surgeon who after examination said I had a piece of tooth lodged in my gum. Unsure where is came from, hmmmm. I do not find it a coincidence that my gums and tooth were fine until my filling, then after there was an issue and I'm running around town to specialists trying to fix damage that was done by this dentist. After multiple visits and continued pain the only option I had was to extract the tooth. This office is run by a staff that does not care about the patient, they care only for what they can gain and the money they can make. Do not trust them or give them your business. read more

Having lost all my teeth, I needed a dentist and found one of great skill. The office handled my account with modern skill and kept me on time for appt.s Generally a friendly group who always made me feel welcome , not to mention being helpful when I needed to ask a question. Dr Patel , a very busy and dedicated man who has the subtle grace of an experienced professional physician gave me the time my case deserved and was open to my preferences. The day of the biggest terror basically, he was very calming and proved to me dentistry can be painless. I was amazed. He did a very invasive procedure that was literally almost painless. The recovery was all I had to deal with. I cannot recommend Dr Patel and his office more. I was more than pleased with the care I received there and feel confident in saying you'll be just as pleased. I feel in reading these other reviews I should add that Dr Patel took me as a free patient , donating his time and services to someone who could never afford to have teeth again . I've been without teeth, well , all but 3 anyway, for ten years. He let me keep my real teeth too. I normally hate going to the dentist but surprisingly my visits here are not painful like my experiences in the past. Dr. Patel's office was previously in Ala Moana and now we are lucky to have him in Hawaii Kai where parking is so much easier. The office is clean and his front staff are very welcoming and efficient. Several members of my family have seen Dr. Patel over the last 4 years and each time the wait times are reasonable, if there is a wait time at all. Dr. Patel is very patient and answers questions fully. You can tell he really enjoys what he does. We did have one emergency during that time for a family member from California and he was able to squeeze her in despite it being a holiday week. He explains everything thoroughly before hand and during procedures, and involves you and all of the decision making process. I've just had another successfully stellar visit with Dr Rohinton Patel at the Hawai'i Pacific Dental Group at the Hawai'i Kai Town Center. Dr. Rohinton "Ron" Patel aka "The Ronimal" is not only one of the smartest, nicest, most experienced and well educated dentist in the state...but also one of the coolest. His calm and positive demeanor really puts you at ease. That says a lot coming from a guy who at 5 years old jumped out of the butcher...I mean dentist chair and ran out of the office screaming for dear life. Not a single thing listed in any of the former reviews happened to me. They got my name right and it even has THREE syllables. My estimate was correct and they aren't asking me to pay any more. Even though I had no billing issues, I do feel that it is also the patients job to know what is going on with their own insurance, as we are ultimately responsible for the bill. It's not like the insurance companies will only talk to the dentists. Call them, I did. I never had to see anyone getting drilled, and the office was very organized. I don't feel I was grossly overcharged, I got exactly what I paid for. As stated below, my crown looks more than beautiful. And when I felt the slightest bit of sensitivity, the Dr. insisted I receive a little more anesthetic because he didn't want me to feel even an ounce of pain. AWESOME. Most dentists might receive similar training, but not all have similar IQ's, or possess the artistic skills needed to create realistic looking teeth. Dr. Patel is by far the best dentist I have EVER been to. I had an unpleasant experience with a different dentist and called Dr. Patel on a Friday evening, frantically trying to figure out what to do about the pain and discomfort that was being caused by a recently made, ill-fitting crown and bridge. I was uncomfortable going back to the original dentist because I was very unhappy with the care I received from him. Not only did the Dr. answer his after hours phone, he also took the time to really listen to my concerns and was very reassuring that the problems I was having could be corrected by him. I called back the main office at his request and left a message to make an appointment. I actually got a call back on a Sunday, so I could get in first thing Monday morning! I forgot what good customer service was until I walked into his office. Everyone was warm and inviting, as well as compassionate and caring. The office is super clean and the atmosphere felt very calming. My exam was thorough and painless, and soon after I received an estimate. Yes, the price might be a little more than the average dentist, but Dr. Patel is NOT your average dentist! I was a bit reluctant at first to pay a higher fee, but then I thought about all the troubles I have had with previous dentists. I decided I wanted this to be done correctly, so I scheduled an appointment to have a new porcelain crown and bridge made by him. My procedure was completed in a very timely manner, with absolutely no discomfort whatsoever. Dr. Patel explained step by step what he was doing and made sure I did not feel any pain. His wonderful assistant was on point with every move and also provided the highest level of care. I was made a temporary bridge that looks incredible, and my porcelain crown was made in office in only 20 minutes! I had no idea that a crown could look so realistic! I can't stop looking in the mirror and smiling, I haven't felt this confident and happy in an extremely long time... I go back in a week and a half to get my completed bridge, I am so excited to see how great it will look. I don't even have to wonder.....I am sure it will exceed my expectations.
