It's a little hard to find as it's between the Denny's and a parking lot, so just be vigilant while walking. They have a little shop with a receptionist and the instructors. I felt comfortable leaving all my stuff in the office (even shoes) as we walked across the street to the beach. My instructor, James, first practiced my footing, head placement, and movement. Then we paddled out, and he held my board the entire time. I got to enjoy the view prop my head on my board and give Ms. America waves even though no one was looking. That alone is worth all the money. James gave me tips and tricks each wave he pushed me in. Telling me to balance more on the right foot, etc. I felt like I had also paid to hang out with someone really cool. The vibes on the break were so chill. Everyone knew each other and were respectful with waves of hello and aloha. This is a must do in Waikiki. The waves were so soft on my beginner board and they have a 99.9% rate of success. James said he was able to help a 84 year old catch and stand up in a wave. Remarkable!!! I caught six waves and it felt incredible. I'm wiped out and exhausted, but so satisfied and excited for my next lesson. What a treat! I highly recommend Ty Gurney- ask for James!!

All the reviews online are five stars, and the website looked very promising, but the actual training fell far below my expectations. The academy recently changed its class packages to one $200 two-day course. On the first day, the instructor spent nearly the entire first hour talking about his history, who he knows, where he has worked, and how he worked his way up in the industry. While some background is understandable, we were sitting in front of a fully equipped bar, and I expected the course to be much more hands-on. He could have shared those stories while demonstrating techniques or allowing us to practice. During the second hour, we finally learned how to pour shots properly, but that was essentially the only hands-on training we received. We did not touch any alcohol, make a cocktail, or practice preparing drinks. I arrived on the second day hopeful and prepared with a list of questions. From the beginning, I specifically asked if I could learn how to make five of the most commonly ordered cocktails. I understood that he could not teach us every recipe, but I at least wanted to leave knowing the top five. Unfortunately, I did not make a single drink. The instructor continued talking for most of the class while the other student and I repeatedly looked toward the bar, hoping it would encourage him to begin the practical portion. Out of the entire two-hour class, we spent only about 15 minutes behind the bar. I understand that unlimited follow-up training is offered once students obtain a position, but I am a mother with very limited availability, and I live on the other side of the island. I cannot continuously drive into town to receive training that I expected to be included during the two scheduled class days. I came prepared to learn how to pour accurately, make common cocktails, determine the correct order for preparing multiple drinks when the bar is busy, use a point-of-sale system, and understand the basic workflow of bartending. Instead, the course felt more like a lengthy talk session than professional, hands-on job preparation. The most discouraging part is that I have been applying for bartending positions, and when I explain that I completed a bartending course but received very little practical training, people laugh and tell me I would have been better off simply working my way up. I enrolled because I believed this program would help prepare me to obtain and perform a bartending job, but it did not. I am sharing this so other prospective students understand what my experience was before spending their time and money. If you are expecting to make drinks and receive substantial hands-on practice during the advertised two-day course, I would ask very specific questions about exactly how much practical training is included before enrolling.

My latest K-Drama watching binge has made me hungry for Korean food so when I read about Korean…read morecooking classes at the Culinary Institute, I signed up. There were 2 sessions and each class was limited to 16 participants and I was told the class books up quickly. The August class "Cooking Local Favorites: Korean" was taught by Chef Grant Sato, winner of the 2015 Global Taste of Korean International Cooking Competition. In the 4 hour class we cooked 3 recipes: Soondubu Jjigae (soft tofu stew) with tofu made from scratch!, Miyeokguk (Korean seaweed soup with beef), and Dakjjim (braised chicken with noodles and vegetables) Chef Sato's competition winning dish. Classes are held at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific's beautiful new kitchens on 4500 Diamond Head Road. Parking is right in front of the building and you are advised to wear close toed shoes and long pants. You can bring an apron if you want (I did not). All ingredients and cooking equipment are provided. Masks are required for participants. Upon arrival you are given the recipes and assigned to a station, 2 students to a station. My son took the class with me and we got the station right in front of the demo area which was nice. The stations each have two sinks, a stove, knives, pans, and the assistants bring you the ingredients for each dish. Chef Sato gives a demonstration at the front of the kitchen and everyone watches, then goes back to their stations to replicate what he just showed. The 4 hours pass quickly, there is much to do. I even learned how to cut up a whole chicken (my son would not touch it.) One of the things I really liked about this was finding out what exact ingredients Chef uses in his cooking so I took lots of pictures of the products. The resulting dishes were all delicious and we packed them up and took them home. There was a lot of food, enough for several dinners. I will definitely take more classes here! KCC Culinary School RULES!…read more The newest addition to KCC is The Culinary institute of the pacific located at the old Canon Club on Diamond Head Road. There is a gorgeous kitchen with state of the art preparation stations for each student, KCC has done a remarkable job to propel their Culinary program forward and upward. This first time, I had the privilege of visiting the kitchen facilities as well as sample food prepared by the students at the Culinary Institute for a contest sponsored by 7/11 Stores in an effort to expand on their 2019 take out bento menu. The contest will garner 2 winners with purse of $1000 and $750 respectively for the 1st and 2nd place winners. There were eight contenders. Each entry had to contain local ingredients, healthy with conscience to nutritional value and the preparation cost price point had to be something reasonable for 7-Eleven to be able to resell the lunch meal. The meal had to also withstand the heat as it sits under the heating element waiting to be purchased. I enjoyed their sampling process. We got to try each entry served in something more than bite sized portions, chat with each contestant about their creation, chat with the educating staff at the Culinary Institute and always with Yelp Events we got to visit and chat with fellow Yelpers old and new.
