"So, You Just Got a DSLR or SLR Camera...Now What?"…read more That was the title of the 3-hr beginner class I took today with Steve. I wish I had taken that class a long time ago! Back then I had a Canon EOS Rebel that used film (the thing that comes in the little black cannister that you load into the old fashioned cameras) and shame on me, I never used anything but "auto" mode to snap pics. Flash forward to today and I'm shooting with a Nikon DSLR but still in "auto" mode because I never learned what all the dials and buttons meant. Do you have a DSLR and shoot in "auto" mode too? You need to take this class! I found a great deal on Amazon Local for $65 for a 3-hr beginner class. There is also a deal for $79 for the 4-hr intermediate class if you already know the basics. If you go to the website, there are all kinds of classes you can take once you get the basics down. Steve is not only an amazing and internationally recognized and published photographer, but he is a great teacher for those of us who never took a photography class before. Today I learned so much, but the highlights for me were the following: 1. I learned what ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed means, and how I have to adjust them based on the distance, lighting, etc. 2. I learned what the letters on the dial means (P, A, M, S) so I don't have to shoot in auto mode ever again. 3. Depth of field (it's not just a filter on instagram!). 4. We got to see the inside of a real camera, which made it much easier to understand shutter speed, aperture. I felt really old when the rest of the class said they had never used a film camera. 5. Formatting the memory card Are all of those things in the instruction manual? Probably, but I hate reading instruction manuals and I don't even know where mine is. Steve explained everything clearly and gave us a chance to go and try the different settings we learned about on our own. The small class setting (there were 6 students in my class) was a great learning environment and even though we each had a different camera, by the end of class all of us were shooting in manual mode. The class was taught outside, at the Queen Kapiolani Botanical Gardens in Waikiki. After a brief introduction to photography (understanding iso, aperture and shutter speed), we were sent outside to practice. After only a few hours, I understood what a majority of the other "non-auto" settings on my dlsr did. Also, I was a lot more comfortable playing around and shooting with my camera. I paint primarily watercolor en plein air landscapes and this class is classical oil painting using charcoal value studies and color studies to develop an oil painting. As an artist it is important to continually challenge yourself and this was exactly what I needed. Mixing colors on the palette, learning to see and record what you see, was training in observation, painting technique, and color mixing. William is a good teacher, never imposing but always giving instruction. The other students had taken many more classes and were more seasoned, so they more progressed quickly, but I feel like this was an advantage because I didnt know because I hung tough to mix the right colors.

Seize the clay by taking a class at Aloha Aina! My friend and I took a class with Joel the other…read moreday and he's so nice and knowledgeable. We each made a 6in bowl and they came out perfect with Joel's assistance and we can't wait to glaze them! We learned a ton about pottery from Joel, but the only thing I wish we had was more time to play independently on the wheel. We never had a chance to play on the wheel without assistance, which kind of makes sense since you don't want the clay to go flying (we were total newbies) but it would've been nice to have assistance and then learn to work with it a bit on our own. Some helpful tips: - wear something you don't mind getting covered in clay in since it will splatter! But you can also bring a towel because they have a hose outside to rinse off. - Trim your nails! I have relatively short nails and even cut them beforehand but they still weren't short enough for certain portions so Joel had to take over completely (which is no biggie but I kind of wish I had just cut mine shorter) - Bring cash for payment - The studio is pretty deep in Wahiawa so might help to map it beforehand to double check drive time but we had no issue finding the actual studio and the neighborhood has plenty of parking. - You'll need two sessions: One for wheel throwing and the other for glazing (helpful to keep in mind if you're visiting) and then I'm pretty sure I'll need to stop by later to pick them up! All in all, great experience and definitely recommend! We made perfect bowls (which is pretty satisfying alone!) and my friend and I are already thinking imagining our new lives as professional potters!
