We chose Hawkins to build our dream pool After researching other pool companies, we chose Hawkins to build our dream pool. We did have the benefit of experiencing a Hawkings pool though a friend who was very satisfied with Hawkings, so we too entrusted Hawkings to build ours. From the design, through the construction and material choices, we relied on Hawkings for their opinions and expertise and I am so glad we did. The pool turned out awesome. We have a relatively narrow back yard, and it was slightly sloped as well so I wasn't sure what could be done design wise. Jeff designed a lap pool that tucked up nicely the backyard fence garden and retaining wall. He also designed a beautiful concrete paver patio that extends from the back of the house to the pool. The pool dimensions turn out to be 48' long by 8' wide 3.5'-4.5' deep. A perfect 1 lane lap pool. We relied on Jeff for all of the material suggestions, the Tahoe blue finish with blue tile work and dark gray auto-cover finishes the pool nicely. A major concern I had was how to get an excavator down our very narrow side yard. As it turned out, we had to temporarily remove our air conditioning unit to allow for a small 4' excavator to allow access to the back yard. Since the construction started mid September, we only had one day where we missed the A/C. It only took 3.5 days to excavate the pool using this small excavator. Gary our project manager was always available and when it came time to put in the pool equipment, we changed our minds on its location to the opposite end of our yard. Gary and team were able to rally around this change in requirement and accomplished this task without delaying the project. The rest of construction went smoothly. We were swimming by the end of January in our heated pool. Absolutely awesome. In addition to the lap pool we had a patio build that extended the entire width of the house and from the back doors all the way to the pool's edge. The team built a very smooth and tight paver patio that drains very fast when it rains. We are very pleased. I can't say enough about the professionalism of all involved with this project. An outstanding company to work with. We hired Hawkins Enterprises to install an in-ground pool, concrete decking and whole yard landscaping (through their Dana Lund Landscaping subsidiary). The project spanned six months and included a number of subcontractors. Jeff Jones was point man for the design, permitting, color & equipment selection and landscape layout. He thoroughly explained all project steps and was called upon many times for advice. Gary Irwin was our project supervisor. He was always just a phone call away and was on-site daily. Both men left us completely at ease and are true professionals. The subcontractors selected for site prep, plumbing, gunite installation, masonry, concrete pour, "wet edge" surface coatings, carpentry (for the pergola) and electrical were first rate, high quality service contractors. We just wrapped up on pool install with Hawkins and are so pleased with the process and result. We started getting bids for pools back in 2022, and after kicking tires for 2+ years, finally contacted with Hawkins towards the end of last year. Their bid wasn't the highest or the lowest, but given their reputation in the area, and having met with the John Rose to discuss the project, we felt most comfortable with them, and saw their pricing as having the most value. Once we contracted, they quickly got our design together, and submitted to Walnut Creek. John had warned us on WC's turn around, and they were able to secure the permit earlier than they had warned. At the start of the project John arranged a meeting with his team, and the excavators to make sure everyone was aligned on the exact location, and all considerations were taken for the final elevation of the pool, drainage, etc. Our project was managed by Gary, who as as excellent a communicator as I've experienced with a contracter. We always knew what was going on, and what was coming next. As the project went on, we also decided to have our full backyard designed by Hawkins. We had already met with Jeff Jones for the design of our pool, and materials selection, and had a ton of trust that he would design backyard layout that we would love. We could not be happier with what he put together and the end result. Steven was also wonderful to work with, and kept us in the loop on upcoming steps and when we needed to take action with decisions for the project. Every crew that showed up, including excavation, steel, plumping, electrical, and gunite were all professional and from everything i could tell provided great workmanship. Overall we were very happy with John and the Hawkins team. The quality of work is top notch and the suggestions they made turned out beautiful. There were a few low spots where water collected after the initial pavers were laid but the team cam back in and corrected it within a week and it held up great during the latest round of rain. After onsite evaluation with a handful of swimming pool construction companies, we decided to go with Hawkins, which turned out to be a very good choice. Different from some other companies, the founders of Hawkins participated in our project during the whole process. Jeff is the designer for the pool and he went a few rounds with revisions according to our HOA which is really nitpicking sometimes. Not to mention he spent quite sometime at our dinning to make sure he addressed all our requirements and concerns. And he also went through with us about selecting materials for coping, waterline, pebbletec color etc. At their showroom, we certainly spent quite a better part of the whole afternoon going back and forth until satisfied with our choice. I was impressed by the other founder John as well as he immediately jumped to google earth to find what the place we were going to build the swimming pool looks like and gave me a rather close estimate before they even visited the site. Jeff and John paid a couple of visits just to make sure that the routing of the gas and electricity is both cost effective and cosmetically beautiful to the eyes. The work they did certainly is both of high quality and meticulousness. We had quite a few company measure the lot so to calculate the estimated cost and they are the only one that found there was an inch elevation difference from the middle to the edge in our concrete pavement and they match the eventual deck with that so you can't see the difference at all. The travertine tile for the deck was picked as the same as our exiting pavement and their workers even cut it to the shapes that matched our existing pattern as well. That's called craftsmanship, you know. Their project planner Steve and Onsite Supervisor Gary also did a fantastic job. Steve made sure that we were aware of what's coming up and what we needed to do, especially when we were ready to fill the pool and also need to brush the bottom and sides of the pool. Gary made sure that everything was in order and all the inspections were passed and always gave us a heads up, especially those that need our attention eg letting neighbors know we're having pouring of concrete that may disrupt traffic etc. He solved some issues for us as small as fixing the cracks on a few tiles, and as large as moving equipment inside our yard so it would not be exposed and stolen lol... Their service team is fantastic too especially Gus who answered our questions always timely. We thus decided to have them maintain and service our pool weekly. Unlike some other contractors who would not care too much once it's done, John walked through the other us and took our feedback seriously. He even proposed to educate his staff when we mentioned a few yard lights were cut by mistake and some grasses were dead by being covered by the tiny clay rocks they dug up while putting down pipes. You could think these are not big deals given it's such huge project. But they really showed interest in improving for future projects. Let me start from the beginning. I called several pool companies and I will tell you some don't even return your call. We bought our dream home and the pool needed to be renovated and I did a lot of social research. All fingers pointed to Hawkins. We had our pool built during 2021, which was a difficult year for everyone. The pandemic caused numerous construction delays, due to supply chain problems, which was frustrating, but understandable. We really appreciated Jeff's attention to the artistic details (there were so many things we wouldn't have thought of), Mike's attention to the structural details (going above and beyond when we ran into a soil issue), and Gary's attention to customer satisfaction. If you are looking for someone reputable to design you an amazing pool and build it super well with no contractor BS, then this is the company for you. I researched a bunch of pool builders and learned a lot about the process and the players. It came down to Hawkins and another company. Both would have built a great product but the design of Hawkins was way better and the price was about $30,000 less. Their designer is amazing and really understood the more modern/contemporary feel we were looking for from the project. All the subcontractors were super dialed. Always neat and tidy and clearly knew what they were doing. The rep from Hawkins who is on site and oversees everything is a little old school in that he doesn't do texts or emails but he was responsive on the phone. One benefit that gets overlooked too much is the fact that Hawkins owns their own landscape company that's separate from the pool company (so it's not pool guys doing your landscaping). As I write this review, most landscape guys are about 6 months out from beginning any new project which means your pool could be done and it's surrounded by dirt. With Hawkins, they put you to the front of the line and make sure your whole project gets done in a timely manner. Pool and landscape one stop shop. I stand behind these guys because they stand behind their work. The owner, John, is on site multiple times during a project and always does a final walk through to make sure you're satisfied. Let's start by saying that it is not my custom to leave anything but outstanding reveiws, but here goes. We had Hawkins qoute our pool replaster with all new equipment. Their bid was frankly the highest we received, but we signed up with them do to the fact their reputation was excellent, the promise of excellent communication and project management. In late Nov. 2020, we signed the contract with Brent (General Manager at Hawkins) and he stated that he would PM the project and keep us aware of every move. Over the course of a few weeks, Brent gave me a date (the first week of Jan. 2021) that two workers would be out to drain our pool. Guess what - that was delayed a couple of days. Not a big deal as we were told of the delay by email AFTER I inquired about the schedule myself. That time, I again stated we needed noticifaction a couple days ahead of time to let us know what to expect and on what day. These two guys also left a Hawkings sign on our front lawn with asking me permission - that was a big no-no due to Blackhawk HOA rules and this firm knew it. The result was that the HOA took the sign and warned me. When the workers arrived, I again stated that I would need to know when they would be showing up and the supervisor ( I guess he was the supervisor) said he would talk to Brent. I also contacted Brent and now he said that he would not be supervising or PM'ing the project and I had to talk to his superintendent (not what was promised or what we paid for in the overhead and supervision cost of the contract.) A few days later, two guys showed up with no advance notice to remove all the pool equipment, so I called Brent to tell him in the future that WE REQUIRED notice before anyone stepped foot on our property and that a call/email/text with no response. About a week later, two more guys showerd up again with no advance notice. I again called and emailed both Brent and this time emailed the owner of Hawkins Enterprises and got a reply from the owner that Brent never promised to PM the project and that this was how they did business. At the end of the email response from the owner, he stated politiely and honorably offered that if we were unhappy that could mutally cancel the contract after our paying for what was done to that point. End of story, we mutually canceled the contract, we paid Hawkins over $1500 to drain our pool, drill a few holes in it, take all of our pool equipment, and place a few plugs so the piping can be pressure checked ( the pressure check was never done). Was I happy? You tell me, but it's sad that firm with so many reviews from people that left them such high praise gave a client (us) such poor service. I'm sure that Hawkins would have done a beautiful job on our pool as they subcontracted everything to other contractors. We have no issues with their owner as he got involved as soon as I noitified him of the issue and is an outstanding and very honorable man, but we could not and would not put up anyone (salesperson, PM, or whatever) that has the attitude that they could send workers out to our property any time they wanted and without a simple text, email or call to us in advance. We have hired another local pool contractor and so far so good. Great communication and they took a great deal of time to help us pick our tile, the wet edge material, as well as adding a UV sterialization unit. Again, I know we'll have a beautiful pool and I fully plan on giving them a 5 star review as I know they will deserve it. Side note - the pool will now be completed for over $8000 cheaper that with Hawkins and work starts in April - 4 months later than planned, but live and learn.. read more

We used Hawkins for a new pool/spa, artificial turf, tiled patio and outdoor kitchen. Everything turned out great. In the beginning we worked with Jeff on the design. He did a good job understanding our tastes and the things we wanted out of the project then put together a good design given our smaller odd shaped yard. Jeff also took us to a tile shop to look at all the options and choose the various tiles that would be in the overall project. Once the project got going it was great working with the project managers Mike and Gary. They were both on site often and always available for questions, explaining what was going on . They were also very flexible when we wanted to make a few changes on the fly as the project came together. Steven in the office kept us informed of key dates and the next steps in the project. They were unreliable, did not show up for weeks at a time, and when we tried to contact them, did not answer the phone. Hawkins Pools (aka Enterprises) is literally THE Premiere backyard remodel company in the entire region. From start to finish of our large backyard remodel, Brent and Jeff (amazing designer) oversaw the implementation of our dream yard! This was a full hardscape remodel (travertine, firepit, outdoor kitchen) and pool remodel (resurface, repair, update everything)... and we have been nothing but impressed with their skill, professionalism and communication skills. The subcontractors they use are on point and extremely skilled. Anyone who sees our yard (and post COVID vaccinations more and more will) are in awe of the transformation Hawkins has pulled off! Even during COVID when the city dragged their feet on approvals/inspections etc... yes it took about 6 months, but it was all worth it! I was refurbishing my pool, and went with Hawkins as they initially installed it 25 years ago. It turns out the company was since sold and is now very different. The subs used were all outstanding (Burkett for pebble, LeakFinders, PoolCoversInc), but everything Hawkins did (pool equipment, electrical, lighting, coping repair) all had to be re-done by someone else, at my expense. The scheduling was a nightmare, my pool being drained in June but no work being done until after the summer because it was more convenient for Hawkins. The employees are difficult to deal with, the Hawkins foreman actually yelled at me, not once but twice, so loud the workers had to turn off their jackhammers. We didn't feel any pressure at all and it never felt like a "sales call". We did a complete remodel of our yard. We added a pool, fire pit area, and outdoor kitchen. Everyone on their team was great to work with. Their price was a little more than other quotes but we knew we were working with a reputable company and we had some complex situations in our yard so we wanted it to be done right the first time around. We paid in phases as work was completed which was reassuring as it ensured the work was done and any issues that might needed to be addressed. We contracted a pool with hawkins pools. The ceo john rose came out and made a promise he did not back-up. This was in regards to the dig out "excavation" for the pool. John Rose stated "the highest we have ever seen in this area is $12,000" " your dig certainly will not exceed this" John was wrong - he came back to us with a bill of over $20,000. What was worse is the way John handled the aftermath. Stating we were wrong and that he never said such a thing. We were highly dissapointed - we paid John his money. Our next slap in the face from John was the building of our spa. The rocks that go around the perimeter of spa were not built to plans. The rocks covered half of the entry step into the spa. You could only use half the step when entering the spa. When we discovered this gross error. It was like pulling teeth to get this fixed. John came out to the house and said "it's beautiful". We could not believe he had the audacity to say this. We had to show him the original plans for him to budge. Otherwise we would of been stuck with paying more money. For a entry step that was being blocked covered by a boulder !??!? The workers left cigarette butts in our driveway and in backyard (we have pictures). They ran into our tree's and tore down branches. They ran into our basketball hoop. Tearing off the rubber pad and now the basketball hoop does not function the same. Keep in mind John the ceo originally denied all of this in an email. Saying their is no way my guys would do this. John did this the entire time during the project. We still have a rock in one of our spa jets. We have asked at least five xs for this to be removed. It has not! We had to terminate their pool cleaning service. Due to algae growing in pool. In addition to the algae they put chlorine in our pool the day of a pool party we were having. We went out of our way to make sure it was not done the day of the party. Thanks hawkins thanks a lot! Their is so much more to this experience with Hawkins and their CEO. John sent us a letter stating he "INTENDS TO FORECLOSE ON OUR HOUSE" We just want work to be finished, debris hauled away and new basketball hoop installed. We wish we never went with Hawkins. In our opinion it is the worst service we have ever received when it comes to a home improvement project. They were the most expensive out all of our bids. We Literally have had some nightmares when it comes to this experience. If anyone else has had similar experience - please contact me. read more

We used Hawkins for two prior pool and hardscape projects at our previous homes and chose to use them again for a third time at our current house. This project was a little different as it did not include a pool or spa, but did include a pavilion and outdoor cooking and entertainment space. We worked with Jeff through a series of design concepts until we finally achieved what we were trying to accomplish; Jeff was very patient with each change that we incorporated. Hawkins dealt with all aspects of permitting and getting approval from our HOA. Our home exterior is a traditional design and we wanted the outdoor space to be more contemporary. With guidance from John and Jeff we were able to pick the right design and materials to blend the traditional features that were remaining in our outdoor area with the new contemporary build concept. The build process went flawlessly and and any unexpected issues were addressed in a timely manner and priced fairly. We are very happy with the end result which has created a flexible outdoor entertaining space that integrates well with multiple access points into the house and includes BBQ area, serving counter with storage, dining area, sectional couch seating with a fireplace, and radiant heating throughout. I would highly recommend that you speak with Hawkins for the project your are considering and compare their work and value to any other company in the bay area! read more

I'm thankful to have found Hawkins Pools and to work with them to build my swimming pool. My wife and I had such an enjoyable experience with the entire team. Throughout the years, we've dealt with many contractors and have gotten accustomed to delays, mishaps and oversights. This is the first time where things went pretty smooth, but when there were minor problems, the team went above and beyond to resolve them. From the beginning, they were focused on service as their president, John, came out to the house to do the initial greeting and assessment. Throughout the build, he was always checking in to ensure things were going smooth. This is our first swimming pool, so it's difficult to determine the potential issues with each build decision. With Hawkins, I sat with their designer, Jeff, and he made many suggestions and built a design that integrated with the theme of our home. He definitely nailed it. The design flowed with our interior and was build seamlessly with the different constraints in our backyard, such as the steep slope. The biggest thing I was satisfied with was with their communication. It was clear when things were going to get done, when various modifications needed to be locked down and how build issues were going to get resolved. I know builds don't go exactly as planned, but it's how issues are resolved and how proper solutions are implemented. Their project coordinator, Dedra, was with us all the way to navigate the entire process. She was excellent and pushed through the minor issues along the way. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. After dealing with a stressful remodel of our interior, we selected Hawkins to do our pool and outdoor pavilion. Not only was their workmanship amazing, their crews were all super professional and Hawkins went above and beyond even after the project was completed to make sure we were satisfied. Unlike our other construction projects, we did not have to micromanage their crew and they were always available and responsive to our questions or feedback. If we had to do this all again.... ....we would, without hesitation, choose Hawkins for our backyard project! Yes, they're that good! In brief, we sit on a lot close to 0.4 acres and wanted to renovate the backyard so our family of 5 would actually use it. We spoke with three different, local, highly reputable pool companies and chose Hawkins to design and construct our new pool & spa, detached open-air pavilion with kitchen (500 sq ft), firepit, associated hardscape and full landscaping. We chose them based on our belief in getting value for our money (not looking for the least expensive as we believe you get what you pay for), and for someone that was experienced in managing the entire project across all the phases without us having to project manage anything. Hawkins delivered on that, and we're so happy with the outcome! It was only due to fantastic project management that we managed to get through the pool, pavilion & kitchen and hardscape before the shelter order.....giving us a chance to really see, feel and enjoy the quality of Hawkins' work in these last 2+ months. From the discussion of our vision and our needs with Jeff, the master designer, to seeing it on a plan, to watching it materialize in our backyard, the entire process was super seamless, and very turnkey for us....while still being one-of-a-kind and totally suited to our style. John Rose, who owns the company, is super personable, is always available, and frequently takes the time to check in on us and the project. Their back office management of the project from scheduling to making payments was super easy to work with. On a day-to-day basis, we can easily contact their head of field operations who was also very responsive to any questions, or changes big or small. Did I mention we pivoted to the pavilion from wanting to build a basketball halfcourt after they had started demolition?? We felt really bad for this significant change after permits had been issued, but Hawkins was super accommodating and never got tired of our questions, and built us this wonderful pavilion that has been a blessing during this shelter order. We're currently in the design phase for the landscaping with their landscape designer.
