I've been to this restaurant three times and loved it every time. The menu is great, the bar program is great, the service is great, the food is great, the desserts are great, and there are lots of unique offerings you can't find at other places. Comfortable dining room and you can get in. Decent value too. The only thing is, if you're gluten free like me you can be a bit limited. The beef tartare is the best thing you'll ever eat but they say the mushrooms in the dish aren't gluten free. I don't care I ate it all anyway it's so good. Also, no bone marrow. Nor all the wonderful things with bread. But the saving grace is you can eat the fries, and they are some of the best you'll find. They have a real process in making their fries and it shows. If you like salty dishes, you will love this place. On serious note, it was fun buy not what we expected. To start the drinks are really good and they have a rich wine selection. We started with the beef tartar, bone marrow (amazing), and pork belly. The meat dishes were all incredibly salty and so were the sides. The $9 fries were way too small and we had to order a few for the table. Our server was personable and very good. For the price there are much better options in Chicago. read more

After the waiter recommended it, I thought I'd play it safe and order a burger. The burger was dressed with , pickle, and . The burger was warm but not hot and was topped with Whitney cheese. It came with homemade ketchup that was tangy, and bittersweet, not my favorite. The burger had an odd taste, and I asked the waiter what was in it, and he said nothing, not even seasoning. I then shared how there was a strange taste, and something wasn't right. Later, the manager stopped by, and he was very nice. He explained that the burger had bone marrow and the fries were fried in tallow. I appreciated the information, but the food was terrible. Hopefully, they will get it right, but I won't know because it was my first and last visit. read more

Ambiance, this place is gorgeous. Every single detail carefully chosen and it shows. Designers knocked it out of the park. Service, spot on. It was fairly busy and we waited for nothing, server was friendly and didn't miss a beat. Food, hands down the best I have had in Chicago, scallops to die for! Also presentation on a half shell nice detail! Cooked perfectly and flavor chefs kiss! Steak tartar great served with a crispy toast . Others had shrimp cocktail and fried shrimp and a dozen oysters and loved them all. Also I'm a Caesar salad snob and have had them all over the city and burbs and this is the best for sure! Was enough for the table to sample. I had to try the publican bread and butter yum! I ordered the filet. It was perfect. Perfectly cooked, perfectly rested, perfectly flavored. Melt in your mouth perfect bite after bite. I even commented I wasn't sure if I had room for the whole fillet, but I did not want to stop eating it. We took a walk through the restaurant and looked at the second floor, another dining room with its own bar and kitchen. We also asked to see the two private dining rooms. Beautifully decorated and perfect place for a private dinner. And then up to floor three which is a private event space with its own bar and kitchen decorated carefully with nice lighting and lots of windows. Back to the dining room for dessert. We ordered three and shared between the six of us! We had the maple tart the sticky toffee pudding and the hot chocolate tart. Each had their own little side of ice cream! Each different so I can't remember which was with which. Perfect ending to a perfect meal. (Not kidding) Do not walk , run here and have an amazing dinner! The vibe was great, not stuffy or loud and every employee we had contact with was friendly and great at their job. What a very welcome addition to Chicago! Well done! read more

Ouch! I was in town for work. My son flew in to spend the weekend with me. He loves steak. So we headed to Hawksmoor, on Friday night, our first night in Chicago. A big marquis sign displays every cut of delicious steak. We started with mushrooms for hor'dervs. Oh wait! I'm sorry. We are out of mushrooms. No problem. Onto the steak. Oh wait! They are out of the 16oz size t-bone. We have to go with some 32 oz size (approximate as I don't remember the exact sizes). Oh wait! I'm sorry. We are out of that size too! Ok. We'll settle for a smaller size. One hour after ordering the steak and 3 "I'm sorries" from a very nice waitress, we finally received our medium-rare steaks. Oh wait! The steaks are rare through and through! Purple! Please fix that. No problem. Here you go. Oh wait! The steaks are now well done! Ok, please forget the steaks altogether. The consolation were the other sides which were actually delicious and satisfied. The part that burned was seeing the large party leave just as we were leaving. I'm sure they ALL got their steaks, and left handsome tips. You tell me. Was a free meal of sides with a glass of wine and NO steak and poor delivery service on food worth going to when both you and your son who you don't get to see very much, make effort to be together worth the visit? Very different atmosphere from what I was expecting, ambiance was very casual, not very intimate lighting, and pretty noisy. Staff was very good; and attentive, and the food/menu was just ok. Scallops were prepared and presented differently than any other place i went to, but everything else was just ok. Not awful not great. read more

When I tell you, run, dont walk to this place, I mean it. Dined here for a second time in a 10 day period. It was super busy during the first week of restaurant week, and I didn't realize how new this Chicago location was, but I was so excited to come back again because not only is the food, ambiance, and service SUPERB, the staff really does do everything to make the experience so personable, and I truly appreciate the personal touches. Ruben was an amazing server, I will be requesting him every single time. Thank you to Jenin, Beth, Andy, and the rest of the management staff for a great night. My sister and I had a perfect time from start to finish, and we told all our friends about it on the ride home. The food was disappointing. The restaurant was noisy. I would not return strangely waiters did not wear and some of them look sloppy.

One of the best overall dining experiences we've ever had. Marco, Katie and all the bar staff were welcoming and friendly and served up delicious drinks - our fave being the brown butter old-fashioned. Giselle, John, the sommelier and the other dining room staff were equally friendly and made us feel at home. The steaks were perfectly prepared and we loved the Caesar salad and the Mac n cheese. Absolute clip joint. Ordered a 26-30 ounce porterhouse, and was charged $154 but the actual cooked weight of the steak we received was not even 16 ounces. No possible way that the steak we were served started as a 28 ounce steak (@ $5.50 per ounce.) The waiter kept taking unfinished cocktails off the table even though we asked him not too. A miniscule side of spinach or mashed was $12 and not very good. The $6 for tiny sides of sourdough bread was laughable. The cocktails has such huge ice cubes that there was essentially no booze in the drink. Stay away from this evil clip joint. Strictly for the expense account crowd that doesn't mind being robbed for mediocre food, and service. "And such small portions." read more

Chicago has so many great places and this isn't one of them. Do not waste your money at the London based restaurant. I know it's only a stereotype that that British cuisine and restaurants are bad, but this place is on a mission to show it's true. 60 minutes for my salad. Another 30 minutes for my room temperature steak and sides. My favorite part was when the server handled the cast iron pots that sides came in with potholders as if they were so hot and I gingerly touched one only to find out it was room temperature as were the sides themselves. And the steak was overseasoned and salty. I'm guessing it was tenderizer. The server knew the kitchen messed up so badly that she got the manager to take the salad and sides off my bill. As if only paying $170 instead of $220 for a 2 star meal was going to turn it around. If this was a Lettuce restaurant, no matter the level, the manager would have for sure come over to address it rather than slink off after the server told him. Maybe they thought I always dined alone and they were only losing one customer. I go out for dinner with friend's all the time and I now make sure to say we're not going to here and this is why. I am giving it 2 stars only because the server was both very good and apologetic. Oh and the ambience was nice. read more

Wow. They might want to lower their claim of best steakhouse in the world on their website down to best steakhouse on the block . The ambience was nice and the server seemed competent , but I don't know what happened in the kitchen, because 50 minutes after ordering , I had to ask if my starter, a Caesar salad would be coming soon. The serve apologized and said the kitchen messed up and if it's ok, can they bring my salad with the dinner. I said no, I'd like my starter first . She said she'd go take care of it. Almost as soon as she stepped away a 2nd server brought out everything together . I accepted the salad and said maybe you guys need to work on your staging. A few minutes later the first server brought over a salad only to discover that I was already eating one . When I was done with it and she was clearing it, I said do you know someone brought out my whole meal 15 minutes ago and I'm not expecting to see that same steak come back . She seemed surprised and said she'd go take care of it . Another 25 minutes went by and my meal finally arrived and I could now dig in a mere 90 minutes after ordering. The sides came in cast iron vessels and were treated by the server like they were very hot. I gingerly touched them to find they were room temperature as was their contents. I probably should have mentioned to them that I was expecting fresh sides or at least microwaved. My check was probably going to be close to $200 before tip, surely they could afford a microwave. Well at least I had my "freshly" grilled steak . Honestly I couldn't tell if it was fresh or not, but it certainly wasn't hot . It was absolutely nothing special . Thin and over seasoned . It had a lot of salt on it or perhaps it was msg because I did develop a migraine afterwards . The only saving grace was that the server removed my salad and sides from the bill without me even having complained at all. I saw her speaking with the manager. One would think he would have come over and spoke to me instead of writing off all my future business. I usually go to Gibsons, Gene and Georgetti or Joes Stone Crab and they have nothing to worry about from this place . In fact, I'm not sure Outback has that much to worry about from this place . I predict this will be another out of town steak place finding out that Chicago steak scene is very competitive and it will be gone in 5 years . If you're going to charge $200 a person, you gotta bring the A game ! They're a London based company, haven't they been to Rules at least once to see how it's done correctly ? read more

We had wonderful meal , we have eaten in many good steak houses but think the simple side dishes and entrees were the best we have ever had - just beautifully prepared and very flavoursome. Table service was super our server Fin was excellent and very attentive . When we mentioned it was a bit dark at our table it was resolved in a minute. All round a great Friday night out. read more

Service was excellent as soon as you walk in and greeted at door. I was early for my reservation and first of my party to arrive and hostess walked me to bar. Once we were sat drinks came quickly as we looked over menu. Started with oysters, grilled scallops, and bone marrow. All were delicious. We had a party of 5 and our server did add additional scallops to app so we all got one. Now for the main attraction, the steaks. They are priced really well compared to other steakhouses and our medium rares did come out perfect. We all felt the steaks were a little bland and no juices in pan. I actually had to put salt and pepper on mine. Also, they don't serve steaks hot. They let them rest and they are served room temperature which I get the resting but would prefer my steak a little hotter. Sides were good but a little on the small side. They are just for 2 people max so definitely need more if your group is 3 or more. read more

There was a lot to be desired from Hawksmoor. Let's start with the good. The steak tartar was phenomenal. The fries that accompanied the hawksmoor burger were also delightful. For the bad, the service itself was fine but the wait times were unbelievably long. Four steaks and burger took north of an hour. The dessert took upwards of 20 minutes. The complimentary bread for the table was one small slice of bread per person. If you intend to have the type of wait times, keep the guests satiated at least. read more

Great food, amazing service and fantastic cocktails. Hawksmoor is a steakhouse from the UK, opened in Chicago (gotta say ballsy move) and it is absolutely worth it! We have been in twice - once for Happy Hour and once for a steak dinner. It is in an amazing space, gorgeous bar, the building was a late 1800's Powerhouse and previously Michael Jordan's restaurant. We were very impressed with the expertly crafted cocktails (by Kate), innovative menu (met Matt) and really personalized service. I feel like we know Jonty the Manager, Ruben the server has remembered us from the last time we came in and John, a new server, is also very good as well. We loved the oysters, burger, mac'n cheese, asparagus, Chateaubriand, gold fashioned and we will be back for sure to try more items! read more

Wow. A lot of wow. Came here for my birthday dinner with the wife upon a recent from a co-worker. Immediately recognized the space (this building has been vacant for a long time) and was seated immediately. -The decor is upgraded English pub, and since we eat early, it wasn't very crowded. I don't know if they know what they're going for, in terms of vibe; the waitstaff was dressed casually, and I, looking at the prices, assumed that I had to break out the cat daddy hat and seersucker jacket. -Drink0wise, this wasn't great. I had the Manhattan, and wifey had the old fashioned with the brown butter. Let me not say anything about them, other than they were alcoholic. -Now, food. In order: -The sourdough service isn't warm, but the salter French butter is so good. -Had the scallops. Oh, what a joy those were. And we were informed that there is a little mashed potato on the bottom of the scallop shell (so the shell doesn't move) and putting that into the shell to mix with the buttery goodness after you eat the scallop. -We both had ribeyes, and the meat was good, with a good char, but not a lot of seasoning. -The Mac and cheese were in serious need of seasoning, and we brought that home, put salt, paprika, and garlic powder in it, and improved it 40000%. -The mushrooms were great. Great flavor. -Their beef fries are great. I can see putting away one after the other. -The star of the show, though, is bone marrow gravy. I had no idea what this was, had never had it...and ended up paying for a Tupperware full to take home. So rich. Flavorful. So. Damn. Good. I was looking forward to dining here for so long, and was SO disappointed when I came last week. I've eaten at bad places before but, this one was just bizarre. I certainly didn't expect it given it's a fancy steakhouse....but a few things were just way off. First, drinks. I ordered a pineapple soda that tasted like straight up vinegar. Strange, since it only had 2 ingredients but it's fine...it's just a soda so I sent it back. Then the food. We were a group of 5 people...2 of them ordered burgers and they sent them back. Apparently they season the burgers with bone marrow so they had like a metallic, earthy taste. And they were SO HARD, beyond well done. They were inedible! My husband's steak was kind of tough and it was a filet which should cut like butter. I myself ordered the creamed spinach which had an incredibly overpowering nutmeg taste...it didn't even taste like spinach it was spicy. Another person ordered the roasted potatoes which again, had an overpowering seasoning flavor...they didn't even taste like potatoes. I don't know if this was just an off day but several things were just BAD. And for those prices?!?!? C'MON. There are plenty of steakhouses around that are cheaper and WAAAY better. The restaurant manager and staff were really nice! They even came to our table to talk to us about the meal which we really appreciated. We did wait an awkwardly long time for our food and the restaurant wasn't full at all, so that was a bit weird but, we were fine. IT was the food itself that was JUST BAD. In short: go somewhere else. Plenty of other similar restaurants with better prices, better food. I really wish we had a better experience here. read more

We had Sunday Roast here on Sunday, food was delicious. Service very good. We had Cauliflower as a side, only ate one spoon full out of the cast iron bowl, we asked for the rest to be boxed, the server put about 2 spoon fulls, maybe a quarter of what was left in a tiny container, what happened to the rest of our Cauliflower that we paid for? Not acceptable. I prefer to box my own leftovers, I wish that servers would bring a person a box instead of taking your leftovers away. read more

Ordered the dry aged rib chop. It was over priced for the quality of meat you are getting. The meat was tough and too chewy. I could make a better steak at home. I often hesitate to write bad reviews because the restaurant business is hard enough and the people who work their have to be able to feed their own families. That being said, there is something especially cynical in times like these when places set themselves up as the sort of special occasion dining experience that commands exorbitant prices for top-tier products and service and then don't deliver as promised. Once a year, I get together with two of my closest friends for a holiday we call Steaksgiving. It's the only time of year where we'll spring for a proper prime steakhouse with all the trimmings because we're not financial ballers and we all do a pretty good job of grilling at home. We chose Hawksmoor this year because it promised charcoal-grilled prime steaks, classic sides like yorkshire pudding, and what we assumed would be great British-style service. Unfortunately, it was a miss across the board. The service was informal and inconsistent, as in when they missed transferring our cocktails over from the bar for 20 minutes, comped the drinks then awkwardly reminded us of the comped drinks repeatedly as we were trying to chat. When my dirty martini did arrive, it came with the olives for some reason on ice in a shot glass, which was just a bit odd. The large-format T-Bone was thoroughly inconsistent throughout - chewy and rare in the middle, and mid-well on the edges, with a few ounces of the tenderloin being properly prepared. We left several pieces behind, which is typically a sin worthy of loud jeering. The sides were (as is typical with almost all better steakhouses) exorbitantly priced but much, much smaller than typical. The creamed spinach was more like the idea of creamed spinach, or perhaps an amuse bouche dreamed up by the kitchen to conjure a verdant reminiscence. Our server tried hard throughout...like way, way too awkwardly hard in a way that suggested a lack of experience. Management also came by to apologize about drinks, but perhaps were too understaffed to recognize how in over his head their server was. All would have been forgiven had the actual steak or sides have been close to on point, but there were fails on the steak, the sides, the cocktails, and the service, and we all agreed that the Hawksmoor was more window dressing than substance and not up to the task of competing against a truly remarkable slate of available Chicago steakhouse offerings. Next time we'll return to Swift and Sons, old classic Gibsons, RPM Steak, Chicago Cut, Maestro's, Bouef Haus, or even Ruth's Chris for better fare on all fronts. Hawksmoor has no business holding the jockstraps of those other joints. Bummed we blew our Steaksgiving on it. read more

Service was good. Ambiance really nice. Food really needs to upgrade its quality control and presentation. Drinks were good. We sat at bar. Shrimp appetizer had heavy breading and shrimps' texture was too soft. My husband had a ribeye steak. Presentation was a steak on a white plate. No garnish or heat on plate. He said steak was fine- no char/flavor . It was a smaller ounce steak and I had a piece; it was very average. Creamed spinach needed more salt and pepper. I ordered a hamburger medium. I always cut my burgers in half first. Initially, it looked fine. As I started to eat I noticed the bottom bun was soggy. There was very little onion on mine. I had to ask for more. No problem. The problem was the consistency and quality of the meat itself. It was falling apart and splitting in half. I sent back . I was told the manager was notified. He didn't speak to us. Didn't order another. Hamburger was covered by restaurant. Dessert: Rice pudding with sorbet and espresso martini were excellent. Would not recommend. I can get a decent burger and excellent steak at other nearby places. Glad we tried it out . read more

Hawksmoor was good, but far from great. I was excited to try this new steakhouse after reading reviews and seeing videos of their New York and London locations. Some lists have them ranked as the #2 steakhouses in both cities. But last nights visit to the former home of Michael Jordan's restaurant was the same as going to MJ's, a mediocre and overpriced experience with the hopes of seeing greatness. The dining room and bar area are dark and reminiscent of an old school Chicago tavern or sports bar. This is not a "fancy" steakhouse where you need to wear a suit. Nice jeans would be just fine. I started with a martini, which was truly excellent, although on the small side. Olives were served on the side in a shot glass atop of crushed ice. The ice melted quickly, leaving the olives submerged in ice water, and the flimsy wood skewer was little help since the olives still had their pits. The starters were delicious. Potted beef and bacon served with a bone marrow gravy and Yorkshire pudding was fantastic. The chargrilled oysters were 95% breadcrumbs, but they were delicious breadcrumbs. The steak, a perfectly cooked 26oz ribeye, would have been an excellent $80 steak. The only problem was they charged $130 for it. In a city of steakhouses, this steak didn't earn the price. For sides, the mushrooms Diane were delicious and worth every bit of $12. The marbled potatoes were perfectly cooked and were tossed in a sauce of anchovy, chili, and garlic. The sauce was very heavy on the anchovy, and it was the dominant flavor. This isn't a good or bad thing, but if you don't like anchovies, then you won't enjoy these potatoes. Dessert was a half tennis ball sized grand rocher. Get this dessert. Imagine a giant Ferraro Rocher candy that has been upgraded in every way possible. The gold leaf on top is completely pointless, but this was an exceptional dessert. The service is where Hawksmoor needs to up their game if they want to compete in the world of high end Chicago steakhouses. The server was very nice at the beginning of the meal. We were asked to order all appetizers, entrees, and sides at the same time, which is no problem, and were told that any steaks generally take about 45 minutes to cook and rest. Seems a little long, but fine. Once we ordered, we were on our own. No checking in and no offer for a second glass of wine. The food runners did a good job of bringing the food and clearing empty plates. My dinner companion did see a food runner delivering an order of the Yorkshire puddings to another table, and before arriving, picked up one of the Yorkshire puddings that had rolled off the plate onto the tray with their bare hand to put it back on the plate. I'm not going to pretend that this isn't how the cooks plate it in the kitchen, but you just don't want to see that in the dining room. Our water glasses were constantly filled, almost too often, and every time they were topped off water was spilled on the bare wood table. After returning from a trip to the restroom, the napkin I left on the table was taken and not replaced, so the water started to accumulate since I had nothing to wipe it up with. After ordering and eating dessert, we sat for 48 minutes with nothing but water before our server came with the check. No offer of coffee or anything else. During this waiting period, we struck up a conversation with the table next to us, which happened to be the chef of a very popular downtown restaurant. They had also been having issues.... Lots of them. After mentioning how long we had been waiting, he called over the manager in regards to his order, and added "by the way, the table next to us has been waiting 45 f-ing minutes just to get their check". 30 seconds later, out check arrived and we were able to leave. Total time spent at the restaurant was 3.5 hours for a couple appetizers, a steak with a couple sides, and dessert. Would I go back? If someone else was paying, sure, but there 5 other steakhouses I would try to get a reservation at first. read more
