I visited for my birthday dinner, and overall the experience was decent. This place has been on my list for a little bit as I'm all about discovering Chicago's best steak restaurants. The ambience is dimly lit, cozy, with speakeasy-like vibes and seemingly intimate, so it would make a good date night too. Service was great, and our waiter was very attentive and offered his advice and input on food items. I opted for the Lyonnaise Salad, thick-cut bacon, truffle mac n cheese, and Steak frites. My friend had the Double Wagyu cheeseburger. Everything was relatively good, the steak frites cooked a little too done for me though. The salad, the thick-cut bacon, and the cheeseburger were delicious. I am not a fan of the truffle mac n cheese, but then again I don't really like truffle, so take that into consideration. If you want a premier, premium dining experience you will get it at Bavette's (assuming you're able to secure a reservation here, which somehow my friend was able to deliver to kudos to them). Overall the dark ambience and the service gives you the fine dining feel without having to shell the money or the effort to be at a fine dining restaurant. The food pricing is on the higher end but in terms of value for money perhaps lives a bit more on the hype and its location over everything else. I think the steak was decent and delicious but wouldn't amaze you enough to feel like you'd have to come here a second time or have this be your go to steakhouse in Chicago. I think the actual star of the show were the mushrooms, that dish was a fan favorite among our table. I also think the bacon they use in their salad was also phenomenal and delicious. The service here was immaculate--easily the highlight of the entire experience. Attentive without being overbearing, the staff truly elevated the night. We ordered a spread: the wagyu burger, short rib stroganoff, truffle mac and cheese, Brussels sprouts, elote-style corn, fries, and the hot fudge sundae royale, paired with Kir Royales. I think of Bavette's ALL the time, ever since I tried it, I feel like I can't find another restaurant like it. Reservations are definitely hard to book, but it is worth the trouble. We went here for my partner's birthday and everything about it was perfect. The steak, the sides, and even the dessert were lovely. The restaurant is beautifully lit with intimate seating. We definitely feel very special for this very special occasion. The server (forgot his name) was so kind, he made sure we understood the menu and gave us his personal recommendations. Scoring a table at Bavette's is no freaking joke but by golly WE DID IT! Well, my husband did for our 5 year anniversary. The hype is well deserved. We had a wonderful evening! The space is soooo beautiful. It was a raining when we came which was perfect for the dark and moody vibes inside. We started out with rose and oysters -- a perfect combo! We also did a half of the wedge salad. The bacon in here? Unreal. I decided to go with the Chicago cut ribeye and got it medium rare. It was actually cooked a little closer to medium but was so, so good. The crust on top was top tier. For sides we got the butter mashed potatoes and asparagus. The mashed potatoes are a MUST, where the asparagus was pretty standard. We also ordered the sourdough with was just spectacular. It was at this moment we realized we ordered way too much food, but we couldn't leave without trying a dessert. We got the chocolate cream pie which was absolutely decadent and heavenly. 10/10 worth the hype. Hopefully we can get a table here again one day! read more

Is it possible to give a place 6 stars?? Bavette's is officially in my top five favorite dining experiences ever.... And trust me, I don't say that lightly. Everything was amazing, but the standout dishes for us were the crab cake, creamed spinach (OMG! The blue cheese and onion were insane), thick cut bacon, and the dry-aged bone-in ribeye with roasted garlic. The service was excellent, and they don't rush you out the door. It is an old school steakhouse vibe with low lights but not too dark so that you can't see. The bartenders were friendly and welcoming, and the full menu is served at the bar. Got a reservation for dinner, which apparently is both hard to get at a decent hour and is a requirement. So many people want to go here that you'll have very little luck as a walk-in. Supposedly one of the best steakhouses in Chicago, Bavette's does indeed serve a well crafted menu in a dim but well-appointed interior. The ribeye steak was perfectly cooked as was the thick cut bacon. The fudge sundae to end was also great and came with an assortment of toppings on the bottom dish, a big hit with the kids. But the real standout of Bavette's is the top level service. From the host to the servers and wait staff, all were attentive and never kept you waiting long or needing for anything. When I arrived the line was out the door so I recommend making a reservation or come early. Since it was so packed, I ended up sitting at the bar, which turned out to be a great experience. I ordered the waygu burger and definitely recommend adding lettuce, tomato, bacon and a egg which really takes the burger to another level. I also ordered the fries and that were cooked perfectly, and a salad, to make it seem as if I was making healthy choices lol. The total cost of the burger was around $50 but totally worth it. As non-meat eaters, we kind of figured Bavette's wasn't worth the hassle of the extremely difficult reservation for us. But, taking a look at the menu, there are just as many options for the pescatarian here as there are at any of the other Hogsalt spots, perhaps even a little more interesting. We got lucky with a post-Valentine's Day opening and decided to treat ourselves. The corn style elotes were very tasty, a nice little kick on the sauce that really does sing when you add the lime. This plus their great sourdough bread, some of the best restaurant bread in the city, is a nice app. We love the crab cake down the street at Trivoli, and this one did not disappoint, maybe even a little fluffier. I love how much actual crab and how little filler they use, so good. For our main, we split the Maine Lobster and the truffle mac and cheese. The lobster was great, a full lobster broken apart for easy sharing with several sauces and butters to really complement the dish. About as good of lobster as we've had. And the truffle mac was as good last night as it was six years ago when I ordered it for take out during the pandemic. You can really taste the truffle, it's just present enough to provide a subtle hint a chocolate that goes we well with the luscious cheese - it's truly unique and has probably ruined mac and cheese everywhere else for me. Finally, the chocolate creme pie is exquisite, so good. I know the sticky date cake is all the rage, I have gone to Armitage just for dessert before, I get it. But, I would put this higher on the top dessert list, it's that good. Our server, Kipp, was quite good as well. We never felt rushed, but we did feel taken care of. He had a few stock waiter lines that provided a few chuckles, and was quite friendly and helpful. Next time, I'd love to sit downstairs - it's a much larger restaurant than I had anticipated. Bavette's is a classic Hogsalt spot. Dim and moody, but lively and fun. Service start to finish was excellent. Our waiter Erik took great care of us and explained the menu well even though I already had a game plan of what to order as I was waiting for this meal for a month! We got the following: Half order bread (sourdough) - this came with 3 large pieces, definitely good for 2-4 people. Crispy on the outside and so soft on the inside. The butter was amazing. Lyonnaise Salad - this is a great option if you want to try the bacon but don't want the full side order. The salad itself is tasty and dressing was very good. Split the soft boiled egg in the serving plate if you want some runny egg garnish. Definitely a unique salad and I enjoyed it a lot. 10oz double wagyu burger - top tier burger in the city but at an exorbitant price. Our waiter recommended to just order it as is without bacon & egg and he was definitely right. The burger is already incredibly rich & over the top. I think the additions, while delicious, would take away from the pure meat factor. Wagyu blend is delicious and definitely needs to be experienced. With that being said, this is very similar to Au Cheval (sister restaurant) so if you're just wanting a burger I'd just go there and save a few bucks. Bone-In Filet Mignon - I was a bit worried about the filet at first as I had ordered medium rare and those first few bites on the very edge were medium. But as I dug in more I got to those super buttery pieces in the middle and near the bone. Those last few bites at the bone were amazing and melted in my mouth. The béarnaise sauce that it comes with was very good and super rich. Additionally the steak salt was delicious and highly recommend pouring some over to get that extra kick. I will have to revisit to try the filet without the bone to see the difference with that leaner cut. Button Mushrooms - honestly this might have been my favorite dish of the meal. They were exquisite. Tons of umami and savory flavors with added cream and sherry. I would honestly eat these again just by itself. MUST ORDER. My wife doesn't like mushrooms and she said these were very good. Truffle Mac & Cheese - another must order if only for the sake of the immense richness. Very gooey and cheesy with a nice crust on the top. Lemon meringue pie - I'm not a huge fan of lemon but I saw pictures of this pie and it just looked insane. Well I can confirm it tastes insane too. The meringue is basically a huge torched marshmallow. The lemon is dense and tart but sweet. Not acidic. Perfect finisher to a hearty meal. Overall Bavette's was fantastic and truly deserving of the hype they generate. If only it were easier to get a reservation but understanding that difficulty, it is a must visit spot in Chicago Easy 5 stars. read more

I thought the food was good, but not in the way where I feel it deserves the hype it has. I went with my mom and she's a pretty picky eater, hence why I chose a steakhouse for a safe menu and flavors. Through it's a fairly large restaurant, it's a very intimate experience, perfect for an upscale date night or a special occasion. Baked Crab Cake (5/5) - I was skeptical about a single crab cake for $20 but this thing comes loaded with chunks of crab. I also very much liked how they gave A LOT of remoulade on the side, because there's nothing worse than a crab cake with no sauce. Crab Stuffed Avocado (4/5) - Categorized under "salad," I was curious what this was actually going to be. Turns out, it's an entire half avocado topped with crab, with a stack of bib lettuce dressed with a zesty, acidic vinaigrette. It was nice to enjoy this dish between our fried crab cake and our main course. Dry-Aged Bone-In Ribeye (5/5) - At $100, you might be wondering if this is worth the splurge. In my opinion, it is. The sear/crust was top-notch, and our steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. Included on the side is a finishing salt and béarnaise sauce, which are sometimes extra charges at other steakhouses. Also, I'd say this is a pretty shareable entrée between couples (assuming you get some sides), so the price is even more justifiable when you take that into account. Buttery Mashed Potatoes (4/5) - Extremely flavorful mashed potatoes. The texture might throw some off. These aren't super fluffy, "whipped" potatoes but something with a more loose texture (though I wouldn't call them soupy). The garlic confit on top made this more garlicky than I was expecting (which isn't a bad thing). Overall, a good side dish, but I'd try others next time! Chocolate Cream Pie (5/5) - Oh my gosh, this dessert was an unexpected surprise. Imagine a perfectly smooth, dense chocolate filling that tastes like pure chocolate. One of my absolute favorite dining experiences in Chicago. Everything from the vibes to the food to the hospitality is simply perfect. I walked in with a friend on a Friday night, fully expecting an insane wait time and to just grab seats at the bar. However, after just 15 minutes of (unsuccessfully) getting a bar seat, our table was ready! We ordered the dry aged bone-in ribeye, the burger (with bacon), and sides of truffle mac & cheese and mashed potatoes to share. Everything sounds super heavy, but we were freezing and starving so that was what called out to us. The ribeye is one of the most flavorful ribeye I've ever had and it was cooked perfectly to medium rare. Every bite was just so delightful. The truffle mac is super creamy, with the truffle flavor very much present but somehow not overpowering. The mashed potatoes were like liquid gold, super delicious and dotted with chunks of garlic. The burger was also tasty, but honestly overshadowed by the other items we ordered. It's like the burger at Au Cheval, but with higher quality meat and more expensive. Sadly, we were too full for dessert so we didn't try any. No notes on any of the food, seriously. Throughout the night, our waitress was super friendly. She explained the menu to us quite thoroughly, and gave us her recommendations when we asked. The long awaited dinner at Bavette's finally happened for me and it did not disappoint. The ambiance is like the other Hogsalt restaurants, dark and moody. We started with the sourdough bread which was to die for, and the wedge salad that came loaded with these rich, thick cuts of bacon that added so much flavor. The sides were honestly the real stars. The button mushrooms were incredible and the mashed potatoes were pure buttery goodness, topped with the most delicious garlic confit. Now for the entree. I ordered the dry aged ribeye, Chicago style and peppercorn crusted... and I think I played myself with that one. The peppercorn was so overwhelming that it drowned out the actual flavor of the steak. I wish I had just gotten it as is or gone with something simple like a butter topping. A must-try--thick, warm, and delicious. The spiced fried chicken? Juicy, flavorful, and generous in portion--definitely a dish to share. The bartender even treated me to the truffle mac & cheese, which I didn't personally love (not a truffle fan), but truffle lovers will enjoy it. Went here for dinner on the recommendation of a work colleague. Vibe is dark, they keep the lighting low. Was told this is the best steakhouse in Chicago. Was packed even for a Wednesday. I kept it simple and had the wagyu burger with Gruyère instead of American cheese. Onions were cooked into the patty and the pickles were a nice tart complement to the fat of the burger. Burger was rich! Tasty. Side of fries with it too which were ok. I was seated downstairs which was a little cramped and awkward with servers constantly passing by. I would go back to try steak. When in Chicago Bavette's is a must try!! The restaurant itself was very nice, a cool speak easy type of vibe to it. The food of course was delicious! My family and I got a little bit of everything and not one thing disappointed, main courses and side dishes! Oof and the sourdough bread, a must get! Only downside is how hard it is to get a reservation. All these damn bots instant booking reservations at 8AM a month out. Food's incredible though. The bread to start was delicious in its own right. My wife and I split a salad which came with some superb bacon and an egg on top, delicious. We then split a bone-in fillet, the bacon, and the elote. The bone-in fillet was delicious. I personally am not sure the bone is worth it, the normal fillet would be delicious and cheaper and allow more char in fact. Perfectly cooked. Loved the elote corn as well. Bavette's is truly one of my favorite restaurants. Its old world ambiance makes you feel as if you've traveled back in time. The main level is charming and elegant. The lower level, which I didn't realize existed until my most recent visit, features full service dining and a bar. Its dimly lit setting exudes speakeasy vibes. The Bavette's punch is a solid way to start a meal. It's a strong, but tasty, rum-based cocktail. The maraschino cherries utilized as a garnish were so good, I was tempted to request more. My go-to entree is the ribeye steak frites. It's a simple, but delicious dish. The fries are a great side, primarily because of the garlic aioli dip. The truffle mac & cheese is some of the best I've had at a restaurant. It's nearly impossible to pass up dining at Bavette's any time I'm in Chicago. There's a second location in Las Vegas, as well. Be warned ahead of time, it is on the pricier side, but for me, it's always been well worth it. read more

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT. Like genuinely nothing beats it. Nothing in my entire life is better than this ribeye. I was so excited to go here and I think I could eat it everyday if I could. The ribeye (whether in the steak frites or classic form) is just so insane. I can't even describe the perfection of the char and flavor. The appetizers and sides are so average but that's okay. Oh also the French martini is the best martini in the world and I'll stand by that. I literally shed a tear on my last bite it is that good. read more

This was the best meal I had in Chicago. The vibes of the old school steakhouse were perfection, dripping in crystal chandeliers and red booths with waiters in tuxedos. Our server wished me "happy birthday" no less than 15 times and goddamn if that didn't feel special. The shrimp scampi is so classic, and it comes out bubbling, along with perfectly toasted bread. The crab stuffed avocado came with a salad that had the most incredible dressing. But the FRIES. Omg the fries. The very best fries I've ever eaten in my life. Later that night, right before I fell asleep, I turned to my partner and said, "Those FRIES." Those were my last words of the day. I'll add this: we ordered a filet medium rare. It came out medium. We didn't say anything; we just started eating. Our waiter came over and said, "I can tell from across the room that steak is overcooked and I am getting you a new one." He whisked it away and brought a new steak in 5 minutes, AND gave us new fries so we'd have hot ones to enjoy with the steak. All without asking. And you know what? He was right. The second steak was so much better and absolutely stunning. Amazing service, amazing food, amazing experience. Don't miss this place. read more
