Wagyu burger with bacon and egg
    Travis J.

I know that this is a steakhouse, but I came for a burger! A Wagyu beef burger at that! After adding an egg and some bacon on, this had to be one of the best burgers I've had, EVER! If the French dip has your attention, you should try that as well to go with the delicious au jus! The fries came with a garlic aioli that has a STRONG garlic, so if you don't like that, sub for ketchup. This place gets busy so make reservations ahead of time, if not your wait time can be hours, unless you choose to sit at the bar which is a first come, first serve basis. The bartenders are on point with the drinks too. If I were to be back in town, I'd return for this butger!

The most hyped restaurant on the Internet for Chicago absolutely lives up to the hype. Reservations are posted 21 days in advance on Resy at 9am Central Standard Time. These reservations literally don't last 5 seconds. My sister and I were online trying to get reservations and luckily she was able to get 9pm. The best I could do on fastest finger was 10pm. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When arriving at the restaurant it looks like a speakeasy inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There is a hostess stand immediately to the right, and then another right. However, there is a second hostess that is standing in the doorway when you walk in with an iPad that can also check you in. After being checked in we waited about 10 minutes for our table to be ready. Once it was ready the hostess walked us through the restaurant all the way to the back, and then down the stairs into the parlor. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is super dark down there. So dark you are going to need your phone to see the menu and things around you[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Shout out to our server Zane as he was a top tier A+ server! All of his recommendations from not ordering a full loaf of bread to steaks to sides were spot on. Up first was the worst item of the night, the $17.95 Mezcal Corpse Reviver cocktail. I wanted a cocktail with mezcal as I like the burnt smoky taste, but this one wasn't it. I really enjoyed my $14 Corazon Cocktail (Dirty Martini). They served it with the 3 blue cheese olives just how I like it. Up first, we had the $6.49 Hand-Made Sourdough bread. This was spot on perfect. We got the smaller order and it was plenty big enough for 2 people, unless you plan on ruining your dinner. Then, we got a $13.99 1/2 wedge salad. Perfectly made wedge salad. I got the $15.99 brussels sprouts and they were exquisite. If they were slightly more charred they would have been perfect. The taste, glaze, and toppings were perfect. I also got an order of the $15.99 button mushrooms. They were very very good as well. For the main course, I had the $89.99 bone in filet mignon. I am a tough steak critic, and this was one of the best steaks I've ever had anywhere. A little plain, and lightly salted, but it was a perfect juicy medium. For dessert we had the $15.99 carrot cake. I did not like this carrot cake as well as Flemings or J Alexanders, but it was certainly very good. The entire meal was over $350, but it was a dang good meal. This is clearly a restaurant you come to on a special occasion. The staff, the experience, and the food certainly were very special. If you want to spend a bunch of money on top tier food in Chicago, then this is your spot.

Bavette's isn't really a walk-in kind of place... unless you're lucky. On our wedding anniversary this year, we got very lucky. We showed up expecting our usual. A couple of seats at the bar, since landing a reservation here is not that easy. Five minutes later, we were seated at a high top instead. Small miracle. The food is spectacular. We went with the frites and the filet, and honestly, the sides deserve their own review. Rich, flavorful, the kind of thing you keep picking at even when you're full. Truffle mac and spinach are my usual go-tos, but there's really nothing on the menu that lets you down. [[HIGHLIGHT]]And the whole time, it delivers that effortlessly luxe feeling in the room.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Elegant without trying too hard. Just chef's kiss.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Heard so much about Bavette's, I'm so glad I got to try it! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a good place for a date, anniversary, or even a work dinner![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Fair warning, it is super dark and I couldn't see some of the food lol.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered the Brussel sprouts, Truffle Mac n cheese, Dry-aged bone in ribeye Double wagyu cheeseburger, Pomme frites, Crab stuffed avocado, Button mushroom, and strawberry meringue. Everything was phenomenal! Bavette's does their steak right with the intersection of perfectly charred along and juiciness. It was well seasoned and all the flavors are truly phenomenal. Be prepared to be very full because a lot of the food I felt was greasy. However, the crab stuffed avacado was a nice refreshing touch!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibes were amazing. Dim lighting, moody music, brick walls, and one of the better date night atmospheres in Chicago. 9.5/10.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was amazing. Our server was making jokes, memorized our entire order, and made the experience feel special. 9.5/10. The burger is absolutely worth the hype. The bacon is a MUST. Without it, it's a normal burger. With it, it's one of the best burgers I've ever had. Juicy, high quality, and not nearly as heavy as Au Cheval's. 9.7/10. The smoked salmon Caesar was great, but it doesn't really taste like a traditional Caesar. A little soggy, but still enjoyable. 8/10. The truffle mac was heavenly. Loved the creaminess and crust on top. A little softer than I prefer, and the truffle flavor was on the lighter side, but it worked really well. 9/10. The ribeye was cooked perfectly medium rare with a great peppercorn crust. I'm not a huge steak person, but it tasted like a really high-quality steak. The steak salt and béarnaise sauce definitely elevated it. 9/10. The fried chicken was amazing. Super crispy, juicy meat, flavorful seasoning, and the mashed potatoes and gravy paired perfectly. Hard to believe it's only around $30 for four huge pieces. 9/10. They surprised us with ice cream and hot fudge for our celebration, and the fudge was sooo good. 8/10. Overall, great food, amazing service, and one of the best date night vibes in Chicago.

This place was great. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was dark inside so probably good for date night, but I went with my family and it was still a good time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The dry aged bone in ribeye was super flavorful. Brussels sprouts were a little crunchy but the mashed potatoes I loved. The crab stuffed avocado salad seemed like it was missing something but I might have not squeezed enough lemon. The Wagyu cheeseburger was also tasty. Got the peach pie for dessert as well which was so amazing especially the crust.

If you want a premier, premium dining experience you will get it at Bavette's (assuming you're able to secure a reservation here, which somehow my friend was able to deliver to kudos to them). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall the dark ambience and the service gives you the fine dining feel without having to shell the money or the effort to be at a fine dining restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food pricing is on the higher end but in terms of value for money perhaps lives a bit more on the hype and its location over everything else. I think the steak was decent and delicious but wouldn't amaze you enough to feel like you'd have to come here a second time or have this be your go to steakhouse in Chicago. I think the actual star of the show were the mushrooms, that dish was a fan favorite among our table. I also think the bacon they use in their salad was also phenomenal and delicious. Overall a nice, premium experience, but moreso as a one time treat rather than a consistent go to place.

The service here was immaculate--easily the highlight of the entire experience. Attentive without being overbearing, the staff truly elevated the night. We ordered a spread: the wagyu burger, short rib stroganoff, truffle mac and cheese, Brussels sprouts, elote-style corn, fries, and the hot fudge sundae royale, paired with Kir Royales. Every dish delivered. The short ribs quite literally melted in your mouth, rich and perfectly cooked. The wagyu burger was everything you'd expect--tender, juicy, and indulgent. Also the ice cream was amazing! The standout for the table, though, was the Brussels sprouts--crispy, flavorful, and gone within minutes. Reservations are notoriously hard to secure, but if you're willing to take a chance, try your luck at the bar. It's absolutely worth it.

If you only have time for one dinner in Chicago, make it this place. The attention to detail here is incredible. For example, my boyfriend had been sipping his martini for about 15 minutes, and without us saying a word, our server noticed the chilled glass had warmed up and replaced it with a fresh chilled glass. I've been to a lot of amazing restaurants, but I've never experienced that level of service before. The food only made the experience even better. I would probably pass on the burger next time because it was a bit greasy, I bet it would be the perfect choice if you were hungover! I still can't stop thinking about the shrimp scampi--it was absolutely incredible. They also knew how to make my favorite cocktail, a Clover Club, which was the perfect finishing touch. A huge thank you to Erika D. for taking such great care of us and making my boyfriend's birthday dinner so special.

This was honestly one of the best meals I've ever had in my life! [[HIGHLIGHT]]We ate downstairs in the parlor which was very cool. The place has a speakeasy feel.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Everything we ordered was fantastic. We started with the baked goat cheese and the burger (which they cut into quarters for us so everyone could have a taste). Both were as good as they looked. The bone-in ribeye, bone-in filet, and fried chicken were all outstanding. The truffle mac & cheese and creamed spinach were perfect sides. We finished off with chocolate cream pie and carrot cake. A huge shout-out to our server, Daniella. She was awesome. Every recommendation she made was spot on, she was pleasant, attentive, and she really made the whole experience even better. I can't recommend Bavette's enough. I already can't wait to go back.

Bavette's definitely deserves more than 5 stars. You can never go wrong with anything you order and the service is phenomenal. I think of Bavette's ALL the time, ever since I tried it, I feel like I can't find another restaurant like it. Reservations are definitely hard to book, but it is worth the trouble. We went here for my partner's birthday and everything about it was perfect. The steak, the sides, and even the dessert were lovely. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is beautifully lit with intimate seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We definitely feel very special for this very special occasion. The server (forgot his name) was so kind, he made sure we understood the menu and gave us his personal recommendations. Would love to come here again, perhaps for another special occasion. I will always think of Bavette's P.S. The food was so good that I forgot to take photos of the other dishes we had. Bavette's had the best mashed potatoes ever

Scoring a table at Bavette's is no freaking joke but by golly WE DID IT! Well, my husband did for our 5 year anniversary. The hype is well deserved. We had a wonderful evening! The space is soooo beautiful. It was a raining when we came which was perfect for the dark and moody vibes inside. We started out with rose and oysters -- a perfect combo! We also did a half of the wedge salad. The bacon in here? Unreal. I decided to go with the Chicago cut ribeye and got it medium rare. It was actually cooked a little closer to medium but was so, so good. The crust on top was top tier. For sides we got the butter mashed potatoes and asparagus. The mashed potatoes are a MUST, where the asparagus was pretty standard. We also ordered the sourdough with was just spectacular. It was at this moment we realized we ordered way too much food, but we couldn't leave without trying a dessert. We got the chocolate cream pie which was absolutely decadent and heavenly. 10/10 worth the hype. Hopefully we can get a table here again one day!

Is it possible to give a place 6 stars?? Bavette's is officially in my top five favorite dining experiences ever.... And trust me, I don't say that lightly. Everything was amazing, but the standout dishes for us were the crab cake, creamed spinach (OMG! The blue cheese and onion were insane), thick cut bacon, and the dry-aged bone-in ribeye with roasted garlic. The service was excellent, and they don't rush you out the door. So many places make you feel like you're on a timer, but we were able to relax after our meal with no pressure. I'd highly recommend booking a reservation for the parlor downstairs. It has a speakeasy vibe with more space and less noise than the upstairs seating. Perfect for a date night.

Bavette's Bar & Boeuf Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Bavette's Bar & Boeuf

What dollar amount would you suggest for a gift certificate for two people (non drinkers)?

    $200

    I booked a table for 5, if I have 6 guests will they seat me? I don't see how a table for 5 can't seat 6 people.

Because that would require they take a chair from a table that's fully booked and create a fire hazard in the limited walkway. No.

My friend and I have a reservation at 9:15, I'll be able to make it on time but they are running late. Will they still seat me and allow me to wait?

No. They won't seat you until your whole party is present. They will have you wait in the waiting area until the rest of your party arrives!

Other than the way it's cut and the size, is there a difference between the chicago cut 16oz ribeye vs. the 10oz ribeye frites?

Nah not really. Definitely get the Chicago cut. Or even better, the 22oz dry aged one. That one is insane and aged for 46 days

Besides the corkage fee are there any other fees added to your bill such as credit card use?

No there hasn't since the last time I dined in which was a couple of months ago

Never been to Bavette's-On the app, it lists "dining room" and "parlor" and I don't know which to choose. My husband and I love private booths or tables where we can sit side by side. Suggestions? Specific table numbers? Or areas to request? Thx

There are many booths to choose from both up stairs and down stairs. There are two tables with old English whiskey cigars chairs, one of which we were lucky to get (away from the stairs). I would think it best, you call ahead and ask the staff.…

Any problems with cell phone coverage in lower floor parlor? (Need to be textable for work, was told no guest wifi)?

Hi Michael, Thanks for your question. Cell coverage is strong with most carriers in our parlor.…

There are two prices listed next to each salad on their dinner menu. I'm assuming the more expensive option is for the purpose of ordering a salad as an entree? Or is it just to share? Can someone confirm?

It's small or large. Small is shared for 2 as a side/app. Large cab be shared by 3-4 as a side. Small can be sized for an entree, especially with their sourdough bread. If you are going carb/gluten free, small may not be enough for an entree

Can they spilt the check between 3 people?

I know they can two ways im not sure about 3

How can you get reservations after 5pm yet before 8pm? Is there an alternate way to get reservations instead of using Resy? (Resy only offers very late or very early…

Bavette's opens their reservations for 30 days in advance on a daily basis. The reservations are released at 9 AM, every morning. Pick the date you want to go, and 30 days prior, open your Resy app at 9 AM that morning and grab your time slot.…

Is BYOB still allowed with corkage fee waived by sharing a glass w another party?

No. There is now a $50 corkage fee per standard bottle 1 standard bottle per 2 diners allowed.

Which seating area at Bavette's might be considered the more "cozy/romantic" option, the Parlor or dining room? I see some photos on their website of candlelit red booths. We…

The dining area has the more intimate feel.

    Indoor dining available?

Yep! Resy's only go out 2 weeks at the moment and the next day availability (2 weeks out) gets dropped every day at 9AM CST

Is bread included in take out orders?

I've just dined in, but I expect they will provide it if you ask.

What's the real number of this business? It looks like the number listed here is not working - no one picks it up and it always goes to automated voice mail....

Did you try calling after 4:30pm? They're not open for lunch so make sure you call during their hours.

    Are there outdoor heaters?

Yes, I saw plenty of outdoor heaters!

Can you still BYOB during COVID?

Per Bavette's reservation site, "During this time of reduced occupancy for our restaurant, there is a $50 corkage fee per 750 ml bottle of wine."

Would you recommend this place for a couple to celebrate a birthday?

    absolutely.....please go.you,ll love it.

    Are dress shorts acceptable?

Yes they are its upscale casual

What is the difference between the dining room and the parlor? Where would you recommend dining?

Parlor is just the bar area which is right next to it you can eat on the main floor or downstairs I recommend the regular dinning area.

Long Review: Met a friend for dinner while in Chicago and he said Gibson's was a must. We went on a Thursday night and the place was absolutely packed. Barely any walking room when you entered the bar / check-in area. We ordered drinks in the bar while waiting for our table and it was a scene - a good one. Very vibrant and really friendly people all around. Piano bar vibes with the live playing at your request. Bartenders are attentive and try to get to everyone quickly. Just to give you a sense of how friendly this place is, I accidentally knocked over my glass of wine while reaching for the bill. Caught it though...phew. But not before I spilled it all over the back of the woman sitting next to me, the man to the right of me, and of course all over myself! Within two seconds, a waitress came over with napkins to help clean up the mess, the guy sitting next to me got on the floor and wiped it all up, and the woman whom I spilled the drink all over was like "Don't even worry about! At least you caught the wine glass!" Wow! I was stunned at how cool everyone was, and it set the tone for the evening. We finally got our table and split the Gipson's ribeye, lobster, sweet potato and brussel sprouts. Seriously one of the best steakhouse meals I've ever had. The waitress was so friendly and very knowledgeable about the food. She was perfect. Folks, I highly recommend this place. Tell 'em the girl who caught the glass sent you!

The negative: for a restaurant where you going to spend over $100 a person, we had to ask twice for water refills, in fact one time we asked the manager and he had to track down our servers. The seating is just ok, it's pretty loud as your on top of each other really. The steak was above average but not great. They seems to char the outside see pictures and it was fairly bland, got the filet. Salad was drowned with dressing and had virtually nothing other than 2 average cheap grape tomatoes. The sides were just ok. I wanted to be blown away as Chicago is "known" for their steaks, the waiter even said they had their own rating. Meh... After eating twice in Vegas this month and getting wagyu I guess I'm spoiled. Go once to get the experience.

I was visiting from out of town and was not familiar with the parking around the area. I asked one of the staff members and immediately they reassured me that the side street would raking was totally fine to park just so long as it wasn't the front of the building where you have to pay. The food started with a complementary potato soup which was flavorful and lovely. We got a round of drinks and one of our party didn't care for her drink and it was replaced no question. We had the flat iron steak, the chicken, and the salmon and each entree was wonderful. The proteins were all very tender and juicy. I was also very pleased with the salad that came first which was lightly dressed and very seasonal. We finished our dining experience with a slice of cheesecake. It was a nice cap to the end of a wonderful meal. I would recommend this restaurant for any occasion - I would love to come back and try some of the other items on their menu.

**Hidden gem!!!**…read more Penumbra is SUPER sexy and low-key elite. This is one of those spots that will make you look like a total restaurant pro if you take someone there or recommend it. The ambiance is intimate, romantic, and just feels exclusive without trying too hard. I took my girl there for her birthday and she absolutely loved it -- which is always the real test. We had the ribeye and the Rotini Bianco, and both were excellent. The ribeye was cooked perfectly, tender and flavorful. The Rotini Bianco was rich, creamy, and done just right. Every dish felt intentional and well executed. Don't hesitate to book. If you're trying to impress or celebrate something special, this is the move.

Perilla is a tastefully decorated restaurant, both loungey and rich, but still makes you feel like the joint is all for you. You know, 5 star service is such a lost art, it makes you forget how much you miss it when all of a sudden it happens to be right in front of you. Ricardo, our bartender, what a gem. Forget about the perfectly made drinks that were served to us. Ricardo made us feel right at home with his kind disposition and friendly demeanor. But it doesn't just stop at Ricardo. Everyone was absolutely fantastic. We could have been served 7-11 sushi at this point and I still would have left 5 stars. Food time. The kimchi pork dumplings were an absolute flavor bomb and that parmesan broth gave the dumplings a little extra kick that took it to the next level. Plus, I love when the dumpling wrapper has a little chew to it and isn't this soft mush that dissolves in your mouth. The beef fat frites were a nice treat as well. They were not extra or over the top in anyway. But you can tell when something is done well and correctly, just like these fries were. The Premium Steakhouse Set, in my opinion, is all two people need to enjoy this very special experience. All the accompanying condiments were exceptional on their own and could have functioned as their own course. The Japchae glass noodles were a stunner. The real sleeper was the chopped lettuce greens tossed in their chili vinaigrette. Could have eaten 20 bowls of those lettuce greens. Sadly, I forgot the name of our server who cooked and cut our meat for us. She really added to the experience. She expertly prepared our food while maintaining a fun and pleasant conversation with us. The meat itself, my goodness, tender, smoky, quality-forward, and perfect served with the condiments. What a spectacular meal and overall experience.

We went during happy hour, selection of food and drink items were good and the price is right too! We ordered a bunch stuff to try: * Raw oysters - good, nothing to rave about * Argentinian shrimp - the shrimp were small and looked kinda depressing, flavor was decent though * Bossam - this was probably the lowlight for me, traditional bossam is pork belly, it is just not the same without the fat, pork collar does not cut it! * Short rib skewer- flavorful, cooked just right, delicious * Garlic chive pancake - this was my favorite, full of scallions, nice crunch on the sides and soft in the middle * Chilled soda noodle and kimchi - not traditional cold noodles, but it was tasty * Crudo - it was a TINY piece, certainly not worth the price even though it tasted fine, this was not a happy menu item * Basque cheesecake - wanted the Perilla sundae but was sold out, so settled for the cheesecake, it was just fine Staff were all very friendly and helpful. It was a nice experience overall. For happy hour, I would come back!

That's not ambience, that's a liability. The seafood "tower" is a plate. A good plate -- tastiest thing we ate -- but when the menu says tower, you expect something vertical. The mac and cheese, however, is genuinely outstanding. It alone justified getting dressed up. The steaks did not. One overcooked, one undercooked. At a steakhouse. At $300 a person, give or take. Then the bill arrived with a 3.5% "Emp. Benefits" surcharge -- unannounced, undisclosed, not on the menu, or website. Server said it was a 'credit card processing fee'. At this price point, padding the bill with a hidden fee and dressing it up as charity isn't charming. It's deceptive. Just price your food honestly. Come for the mac and cheese and order the double seafood plate, if you can afford it. Bring a flashlight. Read your bill carefully. Shorts and hoodies are OK, web-site's "dress chic" requirement is a joke.
