I've been here for both brunch and dinner, and it never disappoints. The drinks are consistently solid and delicious, the ambiance has a cozy farm chic vibe, and the service is truly next level. I've also tried their other restaurant, Blue Door Farm Stand, which I really enjoyed as well. Highly recommend. These are hidden gems packed with flavor. Street parking is available. They are now also on the InKind app, which is a nice bonus.

Tried the beignets, buttermilk fried chicken with mashed potatoes, and the mac & cheese. Everything was super comforting and very Southern. The beignets were warm and fluffy, the chicken was crispy and juicy, the mashed potatoes were smooth, and the mac & cheese really hit. Ambience is bright and friendly.

BLT, Brussels & Kale Salad, Side of Fries

My friend and I were walking around the area on Saturday looking for a place to grab lunch. We happened to be nearby and were able to get a table inside without a reservation around 1:30pm. The atmosphere was really cozy, which we were excited about, but it took a while for our waitress to come take our order, we had to flag her down. We ordered a BLT with a side salad, a brussels and kale salad, and a side of fries. Unfortunately, it took about 40 minutes for our food to arrive. Since we were facing the kitchen, it looked like takeout orders were being prioritized over dine-in. By the time our food came, the restaurant was nearly empty, and we were pretty hungry. The food itself was really good. The BLT had a generous amount of bacon, which was great, though I wish my side salad had a bit more dressing. Based on the long wait, I'm not sure I'd come back right away, but I'd maybe give it another chance to try other items on the menu.

Blue Door Kitchen & Garden puts the charm in southern charm! Started the evening strong with an order of pierogis, which paired nicely with the Crème fraîche and sauerkraut. For the mains, I wanted to yell yeehaw after my first bite of the beef short rib entree. This was a 10/10 entree. Cooked beautifully and complimented nicely by parsnip puree. The braised pork on the other hand... felt like I was riding a bull. Chaotic, a lot going on. Its plating was a bit shocking in comparison to the beef. Huge hunk of pork that would be more suitable to eat with hands instead of utensils. Sitting below was a sea of chickpeas. This made for a tricky situation and quite literally a balancing act when one attempted to slice and eat. This is an entree fit for the hungriest of Cowboys, as we left with a hefty takeaway box. My recommendation would be to reduce the size of the pork and the portion of the chickpeas and to add a different element to that dish, such as a vegetable. Lastly, a round of applause for the brussels sprouts. It's hard to go wrong with Parmesan, sprouts, and bacon. Cute spot for a date night, especially the back patio. I appreciated the staff who also added to the experience with their timeliness, kindness, and overall southern hospitality.

Just not up to usual standards. I have in the past raved about the deviled eggs and today they were bland and seemed dry. I don't know if they were old or they changed the recipe but I was disappointed. My quiche Lorraine was also not up to past quiches here, it seemed undercooked and was somewhat runny. It tasted great though! The husband also ordered his favorite, the southern Benedict and he said it just wasn't as good as usual. The coffees were on point and as usual the garden was gorgeous and lovely. Our server was very nice but scarce. In her defense, she was seated two larger and seemingly very needy tables shortly after us so she was certainly busy. Unfortunately we sort of got left in the dust. Food was three stars but everything else was a four or five so I'll give a four overall.

Such a beautiful place! I came here for dinner the other night and had an amazing time. The ambiance is amazing, and the service was top notch! We tried the cornbread, shrimp and grits, and buttermilk fried chicken. The cornbread is served with honey and whipped cream and it's so delicious. Daisy is a great waitress! For cocktails, the water tower is a great choice if you enjoy rum. Very tasty! This a great spot for either indoor or outdoor seating. The patio is beautiful! I can't wait to come back very soon!

This is a very charming, cozy and unpretentious restaurant. I've been here twice now and the food was great both times. We got the rack of lamb, the short ribs, the shrimp and grits and a side of brussel sprouts. The short ribs were incredibly tender, the grits were rich and comforting and the brussel sprouts were nice and crispy. Even my parents, who have can be quite picky at restaurants enjoyed the meal. I would definitely visit again.

    Fried Chicken Sandwich

Such a charming and cozy spot with an incredible brunch menu! The fried chicken sandwich had just the right kick of spice and was absolutely delicious. But the real standout was the cornbread!! It was so good that we ordered extra to take home. I also loved that the menu wasn't overwhelming with options, it felt well curated and easy to choose from. The service was equally impressive, our server was attentive and took great care of us throughout. I can't wait to come back and enjoy the patio next time!

Walked in on a Saturday around 1:30 with no reservation. Their outside patio was full but we were seated inside with no wait. The inside was super cute-- farm to table with a southern like twist. We sat down and unfortunately it took us 15-20 minutes to flag down a waiter to put our order in. The waiter was nice but the service was incredibly slow. We waited a good 45 minutes for our food and by the time we finished our meal the restaurant was actually empty. Food was good. Portions were appropriate for the price, nothing crazy, unsure if I would go back.

One of the best places for fried chicken in the city. The restaurant is converted from an old home and there is a heated patio for colder months. The staff is quick and the food usually doesn't take too long. I would recommend making a reservation. We ordered: - Fried Chicken Sandwich (spicy) 9/10 - Brussels and Kale salad (+chicken) 8/10 - Beignets 7/10 If you've had beignets in the south then these are just okay, but if it's your first time then definitely give them a try. They are fried dough with sugar, essentially an elephant ear like you'd get from a fair but not greasy.

    Small restaurant

a longtime Chicago resident, I love trying new spots around the city. I visited Blue Door Kitchen & Garden for lunch recently. It was 27 degrees outside, and I was the only guest dining at the time. The front door remained wide open during my meal, which made it very uncomfortable to sit and eat in that temperature. I did politely ask if the door could be closed, but it remained open. I paid my bill and left, but the experience left me feeling unwelcome. The owner later reached out, which I appreciate. However, based on how the situation was handled during my visit, I have chosen not to pursue further communication. I do not plan to return. I value good hospitality, especially in Chicago's winter weather, and unfortunately this visit did not meet that expectation.

    Rack of Lamb

We came here for Restaurant Week. They had a great menu and good.options. We did the Kale Salad, Rack of Lamb and the dessert, Hummingbird cake. Partner got the crabcake, fried chicken and dessert, Hummingbird cake Service was okay. Food was good and portions were good for a 3 course price fixe. Although the rack of Lamb was good, it was a literally rare for me. So I took half it home. There is a gentleman ( wore white) who brings your water and food who kept on coughing into his arm. He occasionally wore gloves when he was prepping the plates prior to serving it.. but, when he brought our dessert, I didn't see gloves so I didn't eat but took it home for the trash.

    Butternut squash soup - yummy

Restaurant Week 2025 $30 for soup or salad, a main dish, 2 big beignets with raspberry sauce I came here for RW 2024 (sat in same seats like last year, ironically) Started off with blackberry mimosas & fantastic!! I had the butternut squash but I asked our server (I think Adrienne maybe) to withhold seeds, but it was not done. They had to re-do mine. It was served to me and it was quite delicious ! Next came the main entree. Last year's option was not on the special menu, so I chose Quiche Lorraine. It was mind-blowing!! My friend had it too and we agreed that was the fluffiest and most flavorful Quiche. Truly perfection. I think a small tear rolled down my cheek as I took my final bite. Masterful. The beignets... no others come close! Fugedaboutit! Chef Art Smith is Beignets King!!! Pillowy. Not too sweet. Simply perfection. Our complaint was our server. She was smiley as she took our order but we saw her ONCE during the meal. I told her later they screwed up my soup and she was quick to push the blame to the kitchen saying she told them. Very very unprofessional and watching her talking to her coworkers while others brought us our food and she never checked to see if we were okay. Service was unimpressive from her. I want to return again soon. That Quiche itself is worth the travel in.

Since this was our first time dining here (my son has been here many times), we took a bit of time trying to decide what to order. We decided to try the Smoked Ribs, Pike fish and chips, New England Lobster Roll and the Warm Parker House rolls. Our waitress asked if we wanted the appetizers to come first - since we were sharing we said to bring it out whenever it's ready i.e. no specific order. The ribs and fish and chips entrees were the first to be served. We had also asked for some ice for the table. We waited quite a while before we inquired about the bread and the Lobster roll. Our waitress at this point had not come to check on us - it's about 15-20 minutes since our food arrived. She also forgot about our ice request (We never did get it!). The fish and chips were delicious - crispy on the outside and tender flaky fish on the inside. It was also not greasy and tasted delicious. The chips (fries) were also well done; howeveer, it was a bit on the salty side. None the less it was delicious. Took a while to get some ketchup and "tabasco" (they do not have tabasco but did have crystal hot sauce). The smoked ribs was excellent. Nice smoky flavor and meat was tender. Portions were very generous. As to our missing food order, she was apologetic and informed us that the Lobster roll was made in another kitchen and she had to go and check on it. Not sure what happened there but the rolls turned up really fast. The parkerhouse rolls, on the other hand, did not show up. We inquired again and she was surprised and said "You still want the bread?" and went ahead and placed the order. We surmised that she probably forgot about the order in the first place! The lobster roll was delicious. It came with chips not fries. The chips were also salty. The Parkerhouse rolls finally turned up with the black truffle honey & grass fed butter (5/5). The butter was sooo good - well worth the wait. We were rather stuffed by this time but managed to eat 2 of the 4 rolls! Took the other 2 home. The restaurant manager came over to our table and was very apologetic and informed us that she took care of our table as she felt that the service we received today did not reflect their usual level of service (My son also commented that he's never had poor service here). I appreciated this gesture and feel that restaurants should own up when they fail to provide the service expected at a reputable restaurant. For this reason, I did not ding them any stars. The food was really good and it was unfortunate we had subpar service when we visited. The restaurant was cozy - they have a few outside tables but we sat inside. There are booths as well as tables. The tables are a little closer and the seats are very comfortable. Would definitely come back and try other items on the menu next time we are in Chicago!

My friend and I dedicated a day where we would just put our name down and however long it took we would wait haha. We drove into the city which took and hour and we put our name down and waited an hour before we were called. The weather was great so we just walked around the west loop area. We started with a half size of the green salad and a half size of the roasted bone marrow. The house salad is super refreshing. A lot of vinegar in the dressing which I personally really like. Also tasted some fennel which was an interesting flavor. The roasted bone marrow is the winner of the night. I would come back to Au Cheval for this alone. It was paired with a thick slice of Texas toast and a beef cheek marmalade and it is seriously the PERFECT balance of flavors. Fatty. Sweet. Buttery. Literally insane and this is a must order! Then came the famous burger. My friend and I each ordered a single cheeseburger with the egg and bacon added. Something to note is that the single cheeseburger actually has 2 patties and the double cheeseburger has 3 patties (3/4lbs of beef). The presentation itself is beautiful and makes you just not want to eat it haha. The burger itself is so decadent and hefty with the burger patties, cheese, egg and bacon. I'll be honest, I needed some more pickles or just something to cut all the fattiness of the burger. There were pickles in the burger and it is served with a huge pickle spear. But I still was itching for some more bitterness/acid to balance the flavors. It was so decadent, I couldn't finish it all. All in all, I would definitely come back and order the burger again and would recommend it to anyone! We ordered a side of fries which came with their garlic aioli. The fries were cooked to perfection. Super crunchy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside and piping hot! The garlic aioli is perfect and have no notes for it. We also were treated to a vanilla scoop with chocolate sauce which was the perfect cap to our meal! Our waitress was so friendly and my friend and I loved her! She was so sweet and genuine. Hog Salt restaurants never fail with their service!

I'd like to throw in my own quote into the gauntlet: "it's ok". It sounds harsh but Our burger patty was noticeably dry. The bread... was also dry. The egg and bacon add-ons were good but as a whole, the burger was missing the core aspect. The bread being dry I can justify by knowing that Au Cheval makes it a point to make everything gluten-free (or so someone told me). I think that's cool but not necessarily what I came looking for. I actually noticed prior to our trip from photos that the buns looked noticeably arid but I gave them no heed because of all of the praise. And I can give them the benefit of the doubt that we were there on a Sunday night, so potentially not the most quality inventory (although I personally don't think that's a great excuse). The service and the ambiance were on point! If you're wondering if there's a required attire (no shorts or flip flops) I wouldn't fret, the atmosphere is a lot more casual despite self-describing as an "intimate" setting. It's definitely more intimate than a normal burger restaurant, with dim lighting and isolated booths but what you're wearing isn't going to dictate how other guests and staff feel. I would cover up anyways just cause there was ac running. I told my friend who moved from Nyc to Chicago and he said he felt the same. And one of our couple friends were surprised to hear the patty being dry, so... off day?

Once we got seated, our server took our order relatively quickly and we ordered the House made for Kasha with a goat cheese and honey topping, the grilled octopus appetizer, and because we were enjoying our conversation so much we ended up just skipping Wright to dessert and ordering the gooey butter cake. For a light meal, this was relatively satisfactory. Our server said they come to the octopus because we waited so long, so it was nice that the staff was acknowledging that we waited a little bit for our table and we're willing to compensate us. As someone who lives in the river north area, I have actually been here, probably a dozen times, and it's always a good little spot but a little bit pricey for what you're getting. Minor environment note: The largest artwork there is a triptych of photographs - three famous women: Princess Diana, Sharon Tate (I think?), and Marilyn Monroe. There is a horizontal band going across where their eyes all line up, and the band replaces their eyes with cartoon eyes, likely of Disney princesses. It is supposed to be quirky but I found it creepy, especially since it featured three famous women who met untimely ends.

The winner of Season 4 of Top Chef and the first female winner in the show's history, she has built a restaurant that continues to impress us every single time we visit Chicagoat. Be sure to make your reservation in advance because you will not be seated without one due to its popularity among both locals and tourists. We come here every time we visit Chicagoat. The food is absolutely amazing. We had the following dishes: 1. Roasted Pig Face Straw fries topped with roasted pork face, a sunny egg, and a collection of magical sauces that somehow transform into pure comfort when mixed together. I don't even know exactly what's in the sauce, but I don't need to know. This dish is divine and an absolute must-order. The crispy fries, rich and tender pork that practically melts apart, silky egg yolk, and savory sauce create a dish that is indulgent, comforting, and ridiculously delicious 2. Green Beans Not featured in the photo because we ate them too fast. Enough said. Get them. 3. Goat Mousse The menu changes periodically, so this was a new dish for us. The goat mousse was creamy, rich, and surprisingly light, served with sweet jam, crumpets, crackers, pickles, and giardiniera. The contrast of sweet, tangy, creamy, crunchy, and savory flavors creates a little flavor party in your mouth. Every bite can be customized differently, which made this dish especially fun to share. 4. Pork Belly & Watermelon Perfectly cooked pork belly with a crisp exterior and rich, savory flavor, balanced beautifully by refreshing watermelon cubes and fresh greens. I don't know how healthy it is, but we aren't here for health. We're here for flavor. We're here for comfort. We're here to be punched in the soul with food that we will never forget! The sweet, juicy watermelon cuts through the richness of the pork belly and creates a combination that sounds unusual but works incredibly well. 5. Halibut with Thai Sprouts A beautifully cooked piece of halibut served with Thai sprouts, miso marcona butter, and blueberry fish sauce. Yes, blueberry fish sauce. And yes, it works. The fish was flaky, buttery, and perfectly cooked. The savory umami from the miso butter paired with the subtle sweetness and acidity from the fish sauce created a combination that was balanced, and memorable yet surprising to me. The restaurant itself has a dark, energetic atmosphere and is always packed. The tables are definitely close together, but given how popular the restaurant is, I understand why they maximize the space. Absolutely recommend coming here. Your tummies won't regret it.

It was so fun to chat with the chefs and watch them prepare dishes. I ordered the roasted "pig face" potatoes and the famous sautéed green beans. While waiting for my food, the chef surprised me with complimentary chickpea fritters to try. All of the dishes tasted incredibly delicious and this was the best restaurant I ate at during my trip. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic. I would definitely dine here again the next time I am in Chicago.

I came here over the weekend with my family to celebrate my graduation, and the server named Cat was AMAZING! She made me feel so special at my graduation brunch through her hospitality, witty remarks, easy-going humor, and attentiveness to her clients. If I were her manager, I would give Cat a raise because of how much she elevated the experience and excels at what she does. Additionally, the food was fantastic! The pull-apart bread was so delicious and something I would 100% come back for, as well as the short rib hash, which was flavorful and tender. The ambiance was perfect for a sunny day with a mild temperature, making it the perfect brunch spot. Once again, I cannot emphasize enough how much Cat made our time at Oakville so special. Thank you, Cat, for being so wonderful at your job and going above and beyond to make my special day even more special. 10/10 would definitely come back!!!

I actually come to Oakville pretty often and every time it's amazing!…read more For this visit, we just did a few apps: fries, tostadas, and spinach dip. All were good but i will say that the dip was missing a little extra flavor (we added the lemon to elevate which helped). The truffle fries dipping sauce is next level & in my opinion a must try for all. The staff is always super welcoming and kind! Plus now that the patio there's not a bad choice for seating inside or out. Additionally, I attached a photo of the tuna poke bowl from a lunch visit. Easily my favorite lunch menu item they offer.
